>New Camera Edition?

A thread to discuss film cameras and shooting of the format

Previous >>4170706

/fgt/ daily reminder (courtesy by anon): one stop per decade is hipster bullshit
>negative film ages better than positive
>black and white better than color
>slow films better than fast
>storage conditions (dry/cool) matter more than years
>Negative film is shot 1 or 2 stops over exposed and then PULLED in development so that you build more density in the exposure and develop less such that the fog is limited
>slide/positive film is shot at box speed or overexposed and pulled.
If you home develop you can also use benzotriazole as a restrainer for the the first developer in E6 process

Thoughts on Pentax's plans for a new camera. Would you spend ~$300 on a plastic fixed lens SLR to support more cameras in the future?

>Thoughts on Pentax's plans for a new camera. Would you spend ~$300 on a plastic fixed lens SLR to support more cameras in the future?
no doubts. But I will wait reviews first, don't want to waste money on garbage.
Also I'm bit disappointed that it will have manual rewind, I'm ok having kind a "ricoh R1" p-n-s with good lens, sharp, smart, compact with good IQ
>>
Pentax didn't actually make any notable film compacts did they?
>>
>>4178263
No notable cameras period since the 80s

It’s a dead company. They can’t even support the k1.

yo! what's the smallest camera that you can focus through the lens (so no zone focusing).
I think it's the olympus RC/RD, asking because I need something small but manual as I'm tired of carrying my SLR with me. It's a really small SLR but the lens means I can't just pocket it.
also should I just get over it and learn zone focusing? I'd like a Rollei 35 ideally but I don't want to ZF.
thanks!
>>
>>4178488

You can't use an RF? That would be the Olympus XA and most of the Leica and Leica clones.

If you have big enough pockets, you can fit a Nikon FG and 50mm pancake
>>
>>4178492
yeah I can use an RF, sorry I didn't make that clear.
>>
>>4178494

That changes things. I have an Olympus XA and it's barely the size of my wallet. Great camera. My Leica with a collapsible lens will fit, as does my Russian FED clone with collapsible lens. Any of the cheaper Leica clones should work as well Tower, Leotax, etc. The FED is the most accessible and make sure you pair it with the later Industar-50 multicoat collapsible lens. The Soviets improved on that collapsible 50/3.5 so much that Leica guys buy them for their cameras. Mine made good results. FED-2 also fits with the collapsible. Mine is calibrated to an I-50

The Nikon FG will fit in a larger pocket with the 50 Series E or the 45 GN. The Rollei 35 is a good camera too if you don't mind paying Leica prices for one.

You should learn zone focusing though, or carry an external rangefinder.
>>
What are you fuckers shooting with today? I just finished the full lens set too, with the Schneider 85mm.

If you've been on the fence about one of those KEKS EM-01 light meters that mount on the shoe, get one
>>
>>4178495
the XA is cool but I'd like something with a fast lens, faster than f/2 ideally. I usually shoot with the olympus OM2 with the 1.8 and I'd like to retain its shallow DOF for certain things I like to shoot. perhaps I'll have to make some compromises. The Olympus RC/RD/SP and the Canonet QL seem to be fitting this bill at the moment with their 40mm 1.7 lenses. Another option is the Minolta Hi Matic with the 45mm 1.8.

Are there any viewfinder (zone focus) cameras with under f/2 lenses? I'd be interested if something like that existed, I'd learn ZF-ing for it.

Couldn't they make something on a PK or even M42 mount? that would be better
>>4178498
Gonna take the Sokol 2 out again for a spin, rangefinders are nice.

I did the meme thing of taking photos of a gas station, but AT NIGHT. I am not proud of myself but lots of people like the photos for some reason.

FG/50 Series E

Trust me on this one. I used to carry a black one with the E in a pouch on my hoodie. The FG has full manual, albeit with a battery. It's lightweight and the image quality on the E is very good. See if you can cop its Japanese brother the Nikkor with better optics. They made a Nikkor pancake which is mechanically identical to the Series E but has better coatings.

>>4178511

Not yet. Pimping/lot lizards aren't really a thing anymore with the advent of the Internet and OnlyFans. Women have learned they can make the same money without having to actually have sex, at least the smart ones have.

I do have a full nude shoot scheduled for hometime in a week and she has asked to be shot on film so I will be using it on her.

Viewing distance is the single most important factor that goes into image quality

If something is curated you can use god awful cameras and print well under 300dpi
If something is not curated you want more megapixels than you require

how long does unmixed fuji hunt last?
and what's the best way to save money on C41 home development when you don't shoot a ton of film? I do about 3 rolls a month and that means that once I mix up enough chems to develop those 3 rolls they are expiring or not ideal by the time I go to develop my next batch of 3 rolls. due to the innate nature of C41 developer I know I basically have to make it one shot, so what's the cheapest way to make one shot developer?

I'm about to buy an Olympus Pen F.
Someone tell me why this is a bad idea.

This is how I'm convincing myself:
I have an OM4 which I use for serious stuff / when I'm going somewhere specifically to shoot. I think the Pen F would be a good snapshit camera or if I want to try out a dumb technique but at the same time use less film doing it. I don't care for the Pen EE versions because of the worse lenses and lack of manual control, and the Olympus Pen D has great lenses but is zone focus. The only downside to the Pen F is the larger size compared to the other Pens, but it has a smaller footprint than a Leica M and if I remove the lens and put it in another pocket it's pretty much as small and discreet as an XA.
>>
>>4179214
Pen F is an absolute marvel of technology, if you can get it without banking too much, go for it.
It have a big resale value so even if you don't like it, you won't lose money.
If you just want to snapshit, the Pen D will be better.
Half-frame sound fun to use, i got myself a Yashica 72E, cant wait to see the negatives
>>
>>4179217
Yeah the Pen D is the only thing that's making me somewhat reconsider. It's about half the price. I guess the allure of the F is that I can switch from snapshit to effortlessly taking proper photos in an instant thanks to the better focusing system.

alright I backed out on the Pen. I realised that scanning half frame is more expensive from the lab so I'll basically need my own scanner otherwise it's only negligibly cheaper to have 72 exposures vs 36. In reality I think to go half frame I'll need to budget 350 for the Plustek then the cost of the camera itself. Perhaps one for next year I guess.

I am a massive beginner, and recently got an old Vivitar slr. The light meter works great, and I'm getting back some B&W I pushed 2 stops. How do I just "know" what fstop, and shutter to use? The fstop is what bothers me, as I understand what speed would make sense, but then throwing the amount of light fstop throws in messes me up. Do I just trust the selenium light meter, use an app? sorry for being a dumbass
>>
>>4179449
I can I suppose, though it necessitates having to buy the highest res scan so I can crop it. That's basically a difference of around £7 per roll.
>>
>>4179511
not a pro but f stop will just change the size of the depth of field and with some lenses the optical quality (vignetting) gets better/worse at certain focal lengths. I know my lens is sharpest around f/4 so I try to keep it around there, then depending on subject I'll keep an eye on shutter speed (i shoot on AE priority). But generally for everyday stuff any shutter speed will freeze the photo, only matters for vehicles.

I really really want one. The last time I saw an original model Pen F go for a good price here in Europe was a year ago, and I should have bought it then. What I find really fucking cool about the Pen F is that it's the smallest SLR ever, and it's an all mechanical technological marvel. A small but handy camera that you can slap a tele on, or use with a f/1.4 lens.

Have film stock gone through the roof in pricing recently (like last year not just last 5 years)? Before I was able to buy a pack of kodak gold 200 from ebay for cheap, now they're like $300 I swear.
I'm a casual and I know film photography has become way more popular. Not just in the 5 years but like 10 years so not unexpected just very noticeable for me a casual.
>>
>>4179758
I'm curious of Kodak's sales numbers after their latest bump in prices. I def haven't gone out of my way to buy any Kodak except for special occasions after the latest raise.
>>
>>4179758
not really, i feel like in the UK film has remained at the same price for the last 2-3 years: gold is about £12, portra is about £16
>>
from an outsider getting interested in film, the cost of developing and scanning seems like the expensive part, not film. It's like $15~20 bucks per roll, has it always been like this which is why no one complains?
>>
>>4179764
ultramax at the store i buy from (a different state in my country) sold out within 2-3 days after they got new stock, about a few weeks ago. gold sold out a day or two after that
>>
>>4179795
yeah thats been constant
>>
>>4179795
also c41 dev is hard to get perfect at home. b/w is easy (and cheaper) but c41 issues WILL get you colour shifts, and the developer will only last like 2-3 weeks once mixed. the working solutions do about 10 rolls but who the fuck is shooting 10 rolls a month?
the best way to develop c41 at home if you have pictures that you care about is one shot developer and that stuff isn't much cheaper than a lab.

It's a little cleaner and really flat, but run 400 at 200 and fuck with contrast and there isn't much difference. You can pull more from the toes but not much. Slightly different grain patterns depending on the developer too. I'm sticking with foma because I can't tell much difference other than the negatives are a little more prone to curl.

I have a Pentax P3n, I don't like cameras that you can't override the DX code/change iso on so if that's something you do I wouldn't consider the p3 series but if you only shoot box speed then it's a fine enough camera - nothing special about it and they're pretty cheap I got mine for like $30 off keh

Do you use a UV filter when you shoot film, or are they still just lens protection?

yeah i dont change speeds too often so i most likely will bid for it but the plastic door is kind of a turn off. the rest of the camera is metal though right? skimming results on google didnt tell me outright. ill probably pass on the olympus bodies for compatibilities sake

$5k won't get me a bigger apartment or let me buy a house so it'd be that ilford darkroom tent and then whatever cool compact shit I can fit into it from eBay. I am pretty sure with such limited space I'd have to be trying hard to spend all that money. If you relax the requirements a bit to include film processing stuff that's not necessarily darkroom related then I'd probably get an automatic processor in addition to the darkroom tent and then I'd also maybe buy a nice scanner like a Pakon plus an inkjet photo printer so I can make real prints with the enlarger or do scans and make inkjet prints
>>
>>4179795
it is pretty bad. I need to buy a scanning mask for my scanner and I'll just pay for processing and scan them at home myself so instead of $15 per roll it'll be like $5 to $8.

It works okay but the shutter button is really stiff, and the rangefinder gets stuck frequently.

mostly curious about the shutter button, where the rangefinder cam is, and how to unscrew the front and rear lens elements for cleaning.

200, it's a stop faster than 100 with no obvious difference. It's not a matter of liking, it's the only economic option for shooting large format. In that size the lack of contrast becomes really glaring but at least it's very easy to handle in the darkroom because of the thicc and rigid base.

Thanks. Have you ever pushed it? I wanted to try some 400 at 1600 but some people say it's a huge grainy mess. I mind of want it as an option to bulk roll, because it's about 40% cheaper than the BW I currently bulk roll, and sometimes I shoot at night. Maybe I should just get a bulk roll of 200 instead. I've only ever shot foma once, on 6x9, it was 100 I so but I liked it

You didn't lose anon. It's a cool looking camera but very low end and has limited compatibility. Try getting something like a Z-50p at least.
Or this, no bidding required: https://www.ebay.com/itm/314596155948
Good luck and do your research before commiting to a purchase.

I've shot a lot of both and pushed them 1-2 stops most of the time. They're good budget films. I've moved onto paying an extra $30 to shoot 100ft rolls of Kodak Double-X instead. Big difference in quality.

Gold 400 aka ultramax tends to have blue skies go quite grainy. If you're underexposing it'll be worst. Finally, you're using a flatbed which always makes 35mm film look like shit. A lot of that grain is actually digital noise (zoom in, it'll be rainbow coloured).

Why are rangefinders so offensively ugly?
That Bessa L is the only somewhat good looking one of that bunch and it's thanks to the lack of fugly windows.
I swear the only good looking film rangefinders I've ever seen are the Leningrad, the Junost, the Super Silette and the Ikon ZM. Even the Contax G and Hasselblad X-Pan models are somewhat ugly.

Im way out of the loop here but when did BW dev become more expensive than color dev? I thought bw was inherently simpler and easier to process than color...
>>
>>4182866
It is, but economies of scale mean C41 is cheaper. Just buy XP2.
>>
>>4182867
now you tell me, after i bought a box of HP5 a few days ago...
>>
>>4182866
because someone still has to do B&W by hand in a tank and they have big proccessing machines for colour.
>>
>>4182869
What can I say, learn to self-dev.
At $14 per roll you can easily get everything necessary and more than break even. The best part? It's much quicker than waiting for the lab. You can get a Paterson tank for about $30, a pack of Dektol for about $15, a dark bag for $28 and then some rapid fixer for about $16. This should last you for more than the entire box.

Google says:
>Contact cement is different from other adhesives because it needs to air-dry for 15 to 20 minutes before assembling. The cement needs to be applied to both parts, so that the glue actually bonds to itself. Contact cement is not sticky; the glue itself is a solid substance.

Why do the first rolls always overdevelop when I mix a new batch ? I use Cinestills 2 bath kit, and get excellent results around 4 rolls in, but the rolls before that are clearly overdevd, with very dense highlights and big grain.

I have the old developer still lying around, it started to get a little underdev, would mixing in a litlle of the new batch replenish it instead of ruining rolls with the full new solution?

If it's a d76 or derivative, yeah it's hot when fresh and most people pour in some of the old or toss some waste negatives (ahahaha, must have been nice back in the 70s in a lab) in to cool it down to operating strength. A lot of these recipes were designed for continuous development with refreshment and don't work so well on a smaller scale. Half of them were designed for dip tanks and shit like that.

I'm a novice idiot who recently got started in photography by inheriting some gear from my old mum when she decided she was too old to go out photoing anymore. I've been plaguing the stupid questions threads which has been a great help with learning how to use the 1200D I got from her.
Well, she had a rummage in a cupboard and has now supplied me with pic related. A praktica MTL5.
Is it a piece of shit?
Should I consider trying out film shooting as a noob clown fuckwit or leave it in it's box until I know what I'm doing?
I've not used a film camera since the 90s (110 chad) when you could get film developed in pretty much any chemist's shop. How do you film guys do it in the digital age? Do you all have your own darkrooms or is there a reliable online resource you can send film to?
I'm in a very very rural part of the UK, nearest city is over 100 miles away so taking film to a printing place isn't really an option.

You can and should develop black and white at home. A dev kit costs maybe a 100 bucks and used equipment pennies. It's about as complex as making outmeal and all you need is a sink. Color is more technical as you need to be careful with temperature and such, and chems are way more expensive. The camera you have is about as dependable as any East Bloc camera ever was. Don't trust the light meter but it's a good opportunity to learn exposure values for normal conditions. It is all mechanical so the battery only powers the light meter. First thing you should do is cycle through all the shutter speeds and dry fire to see if the shutter clearly hangs or jams at some speeds. It's pretty common for 1/30 and slower to become sticky. You can try and recalibrate the shutter yourself, google around for a guide on how to do that, it's not really rocket science. The camera uses a very common M42 mount so you can find a ton of lenses for it for pennies on the dollar. If you're cash strapped look into brands like Cosina, Porst and Pentacon. Soviet lenses like Helios are overpriced for what they are imo. If you feel fancy then grab some Takumars.

Pic related, found mine in a flea market for 5€. Looks and feels crude but just keeps on trucking.

analoguewonderland is probably the best place to have your film developed in the UK. I'd just shoot some cheap film and then send it off until you feel confident to start home developing some cheap B&W. I got this kit for christmas and I really want to get into it soon, probably gonna get a couple rolls of kentemere that I don't mind fucking up

You can develop at home and send it off to a lab to get scanned. They will send you digital images via dropbox/etc. As long as you have a postal service to your address you are fine. Given that you are so remote should make you want to take photos and try out film even more as not many others have that.
Also, there is a UK guy on YouTube called shoot film like a boss. He is one of the best. Extremely informative, Check him out

based I love that guy, I was watching his Orwo UN54 review last night so I bought a few rolls while they're on sale
>>
>>4183550
Personally switched to Traia photolabs from AW because they're way more affordable, only downlside is no E6 developing not that I shoot a lot of positive anyway. Plus nice to support a relatively new lab run by a nice couple locally.

might have to check em out next time I need some colour dev then. I still have a roll of gold 200 from like 2 years ago still in my bag and a roll of lomo metropolis I wanna shoot. Feel like it'd be a fun film to shoot at the seaside. Guess i'll plan a day out to cleethorpes.

any tips for shooting Porta 160 - some reviews say to overexpose it by 1/3 stop or shoot at box speed, what's your recommendation?

same as most color film, over exposing wont hurt, under will.

Light meter isn't working anymore, how fucked am i? think its an easy fix? only paid $20 for this years ago and i don't want to pay $300aud for a new body and lens, I just hope it is easily fixable and won't cost anymore than $150.

is a medium format a bad choice for a first film cam? i really like the mamiya 645

Buy what brings you joy, cause it'll make shooting something you look forward to.
On the other hand - I guess less exposures per roll, etc.
>>
>>4184108
kind of yeah, get a $10 plastic point and shoot to just see if you're patient enough to dev yourself or willing to spend the money/time on having others do it for you.

Unless you're rolling in dough or have extensive experience shooting through the OVF and nailing exposure, yes. What's your digital kit like?

What would you rec for a first film camera?

First camera I ever used at age of 9 or so was a beaten 6x9 folder with rangefinder. No problems taking correctly exposed and focused photos. A 120 roll costs about same as a 135 roll. Yes, less shots per roll but if that is THE issue a SD card can hold much more then a 135 roll.
>>
>>4184017
Time to teach yourself to gauge exposure by eye or pick up a proper spotmeter and learn the zone system
>>
How bad is it when you overshoot the leader by 1-2cm? I think my last roll went like that when I was drunk. Shot a few exposures too.
>>
>>4184359
you just get less frames possibly
>>
>>4184366
Ah so at 1-2cm at worst it's the last two shots that get fucked (unless I roll back after #35 and don't even bother with #36).

How much extra length does the film typically have? If I understand correctly it's all just the same roll of "tape" and then it gets cut?
>>
>>4184370
You can get 37 or 38 exposures out of a carefully loaded roll so it’s nothing. If film was only just long enough people would be ripping the film off the spool too often. Spool to spool distance, loading mechanisms etc all differ and human error is assumed
>>
>>4184017

>>4184611

>>4184370
the film in a roll is just one big long piece of film, doesnt matter if you pull the leader out 30cm and start shooting from there, the camera just keeps adding frames until it hits the end (and cant advance anymore). they take into account the leader when manufacturing, so if you load a 36exp roll in a way without pulling much leader out you can get 38 frames, 39 is fairly common for me.

Nothing gets me more motivated to shoot film than a Nick Carver video.
And he just released 4hrs worth of content based around a little road trip to Arizona where he shot his usual 6x17 as well as some rare polaroids and and his new Fuji 6x9 which I happen to own.
Now if only I had the motivation to actually get in my car and find something to photograph.
I keep telling myself that I need to delete social media because seeing all of these other photographers in my city always shooting new things and working with each other is killing my self esteem and making me eternally depressed. But if I do then I have no social circle (as if I'm even a part of it) and no one to share my work with.
I probably could easily be one of them if I would put a little bit of effort in being extroverted and engaging with them on Instagram but my mind refuses to do so. I just post a photo then disappear for a couple of months and repeat the cycle. All the while watching everyone else do what I dream of achieving.
It's a self-inflicted Catch-22 and I hate it.
>>
>its social media's fault i dont leave the house and take photos

what's your setup and settings looking like?
>>

Overexposed by a stop or two. Though it wouldn't help a lot, too high contrast scene. Framing is nice, could be slightly improved by cutting off leftmost and rightmost tree, but it's shooting into the sun that's overkill.

Doesn't matter at all. They're effectively the same snapshit.

Self-timer sufficed just fine

Snagged a cheap Canon T70 off ebay and it's in fantastic condition. Thing is rugged as hell and apart from a really quiet high pitched electronic whine when you half press the shutter for the light meter readout it's great. Can't find any info anywhere about the electronic noise though.

Can someone recommend a point n shoot 35mm film camera? I'm hoping to buy a new one before the 6th when I leave for a trip.

I've read a lot of reviews for different cameras, but it seems like there's many tradeoffs.

I found the yashica mf-2 super dx, but I think a lot of people don't like it, but seemingly only due to build quality? Otherwise, it has a glass lens and is mechanical which seems quite high end for a point n shoot.

I have a broken Yashica mf-1 point n shoot that I played with before, but I wasn't too into it.
I'm not super skilled, but I just wanna take fun film photos of my friends during an extended trip.

everyones just gonna tell you that the best camera is the one you have with you. If it works, it'll be fine and driving yourself crazy with choice anxiety over what's "best" is just gonna take away the fun of the trip.

seconding >>4185912 , my most memorable pictures have been on a p&s 110 film camera. if you truly just want your vacation on film, just pick up any old working p&s and stop worrying about the nitty gritty. otherwise you become a gearqueer, and thats not the energy you want on vacation.

Thanks lads, good info. I've taken notes.
Having seen the price of film I think it'll live in it's box for a while until I've a better understanding of things. Metering in particular. There's an old-fashioned meter thingy in the box with the camera but until I understand how and why to use it, I'll not go wasting money screwing up film. Something to look forward to in the future.

Yeah it's pretty remote here. Picrel is one of my DSLR snapshits from my back garden of a passing boat. It's one of those areas that proper photographers flock to in summer.

>praktica MTL5.
>Is it a piece of shit?
No, it's from approximately the best series of manual focus M42-mount stop-down metering cameras, barring maybe mamiya's DTL line because those actually had a spot meter instead of an averaging one.
