A thread to discuss film cameras and shooting of the format

/fgt/ daily reminder (courtesy by anon): one stop per decade is hipster bullshit

>negative film ages better than positive
>black and white better than color
>slow films better than fast
>storage conditions (dry/cool) matter more than years

>Negative film is shot 1 or 2 stops over exposed and then PULLED in development so that you build more density in the exposure and develop less such that the fog is limited

>slide/positive film is shot at box speed or overexposed and pulled.
If you home develop you can also use benzotriazole as a restrainer for the the first developer in E6 process

500cm with a regular 80mm CF lens - it's from 1985, I think. It's the polar opposite of what I usually use, which is a plastic-y half-frame. Thinking of doing some documentary photography of my city so that I can look back in 30 - 40 years and say "things were not better then, but they're worse now".

One of the things I like about film is that it's difficult to overexpose negative film even in high contrast situations. I metered on the shady foreground and there's still some cloud detail, this blows my mind as a former digicam user

>try my Laowa lens on some other Canon SLR

>375$ for the body

Now that I'm home, I realize I should've been pushing to try TTL flash on that camera that had it working. Like sure the lens might work but if I can't use my flash except in manual mode it makes capturing the shots I want way way harder.
I was already inhaling copium thinking I could rent a Canon brand macro lens that will 100% work for a special product but not having my own body is a big buzzkill and adds a lot more expense to what was already an expensive side project (like 60$ canadian per roll all included?)
Cheer me up, anons. Please, give me some hopium

when the weather allows, I love setting it on f8 and focus on 5 meters and practically get everything from 2.6m to infinity in focus. it's a lovely camera, and I found it for just 60 eur at a thrift. the bokeh you get from the triangular aperture blades are lovely
it hasn't been that great to me though lately. it was about -2°C a few days ago and the battery was poopin' out on me
is it just mine or is the focus setting dial a little stiff on yours too? I find that I kind of have to fight it to get it out of AF.

hey guys, i need help figuring out the best way to take a particular shot. i want to photograph a train going by at night near the city. i need a way to keep the grain down while freezing motion (around 1/60th) and still getting a decent depth of field. i might shoot on medium format so the grain doesn't get out of control but that reduces the depth of field. any ideas?
>>
>>4152111
do you mean its still in the camera? just take it into a pitch black room and then roll it back and tape it shut
>>
>>4152179
Unless you can put lights everywhere, you wont.
You will have to compromise on one of the 3
Otherwise either push a film and expect grain (Cinestill 800T on medium format can be pushed +2 without showing much grain), or pull a very fast film by a stop like Tmax 3200 or Delta 3200 and dev it with a proper fine grain developper.
Another way would be using a wide angle lens (24mm and lower)

thanks. i read up that someone put a roll onto a wet reel and ended up with weird marks/splodges all over it after dev but that makes no sense to me since you literally pour liquid onto it right after (or even pre-washing/remjet removal/etc). if i dry the reel with a towel will it leave tiny bits of hairs and dust and that will fuck up the dev? and i assume i dont need to dry the actual tank?
>>
>>4152203
Perhaps someone more determined then me can load film into moist reel but in my experience pic related is the expected outcome with Paterson plastic reels.

anyone had this happen before?

>>
>>4152209
Well, you do have to pre-rinse if you loaded film onto wet reels because developer penetrates wet and dry parts differently
>tiny bits of hairs and dust and that will fuck up the dev?
You can literally use the developer bottle as an ashtray, as long as it isn't oxidised, it will work.
>and i assume i dont need to dry the actual tank
Just wash it thoroughly so there's no leftover bleach and shake to remove most of excess water

I have two questions /fgt/

First, how do you load film to maximise shot count in 35mm?
I tried a method where you insert the leader first then pull the roll across and insert it into the slot, advance the lever once and shut the door then shoot as normal.
Apparently this gives an extra shot or two and it did the first time, this second time though the leader slipped out after 3-4 shots and I had to reseat it in the dark and advance back to frame 5.

Second question is about self-dev.
Say you have a tank that supports two 35mm rolls/one 120 roll but you only dev one 35mm roll, do you still need to mix chemicals to fill the tank as if there were two rolls in it or do you just mix chemicals according to how many rolls you're developing?
Makes me think one-shot developer is slightly better for convenience, keeping track of how many rolls re-usable developer has done seems a hassle

>>
>>4152552
>First, how do you load film to maximise shot count in 35mm?
if the leader slipped out after 3-4 shots thats very strange, might be something wrong with the camera
heres what i do:

put the roll in on the left
slide the film over and make sure that the teeth of the gear/whatever is in the sprockets/holes of the film (you might need to hold it down with your left hand)
turn the advance lever maybe 1/4 of the way (and hold it there with your right hand/thumb) to make sure that it is advancing the film
close the door, and advance the lever from 1/4 to full
depending on the camera, you can rewind the film slowly and softly until it becomes tight/taught (this is to make it so the rewind turns when you advance the film, so you know its on properly)
press the shutter, advance again and theres your first frame (no idea if it will be already exposed)
im always able to get 38 shots, sometimes 39

I think I might not have fully seated the leader all the way in, it was definitely engaging the sprockets.
When I say it came out after 3-4 shots let me clarify, I went out the day before yesterday and took 3-4 shots and only went out to take shots 5 onwards today.
I think if I'd kept taking photos the tension of the coiled film might have kept the leader in?
As far as I know there isn't anything wrong with my k1000, I just suck at loading film evidently.
I plan on selling my olympus gear that I don't use so once I have the money from that I'll grab some cheap fomapan and try your method

fixing is a process that goes to completion, so no need to worry about temp etc affecting dynamic range, shadow/highlight detail etc
To find the necessary fixing time, drop some fixer on your film leader, and fix for twice the amount of time it takes for the fixer to clear the emulsion.

I use >=500ml even for one roll because pic related. since I use Rodinal it's max 20ml of solution for a 1:25 dilution, so it'll last me a while + the bottle was like $13/500ml so if it only makes say 20 rolls, it's still no bid deal

yeah, but maybe it's my weak sissy hands struggling when turning it.
there's a slight resistance to get it out of AF, otherwise when switching between 0.4m-infinity it's fine. cold temp issues are still a bitch though. it shows inaccurate battery status when its too cold out.

Hmm, it's pretty common for some setting to have more resistance to get out of an auto setting. That's normal. Another example would be cameras with aperture priority on the shutter dial. Takes more effort to get out of aperture priority than it does switching between shutter speeds. Reason is to prevent accidently bumping the setting out of auto mode.

In the cold I find the battery will read low for the first 30s but after that it reads accurately. I use my Klasse in temps well below freezing often.

that happens to mine as well, but it takes a while longer. I guess it's just the annoyance of CR2 batteries which are more sensitive to cold than CR123's.
amazing camera though, regardless of anything, and I was real lucky to get it that cheap. I've had premium contaxes and yashica P&S, but out of all of those I'd still pick this.

I have a 135mm prime for my pentax but I rarely use it over my 50, maybe I should try more close-up stuff

>>
>>4152768
I only have the 135 because that's what it came with, I find it isn't long enough for when I want to do long distance shots.
For clarification it's a hanimex 135mm macro, though it only goes 1:4.5. Bastard of a lens to take off because almost every part of it rotates

need recommendations on what to bring on a road trip to colorado and utah in the spring. im thinking of bringing my mamiya c220 with 80mm lens and a nikon f80 which i have a few different lenses for. and maybe a canon point and shoot.
120 film i already have
>xp2 super
>provia 400f
>superia 100
>fuji nhg800
e6 will be harder for me to get done after, and i haven't used the camera so not sure if i will expose it properly. i would consider picking up something else.
35mm i have:
>velvia 50
>portra 160
>lots of different ektachrome
>hp5, pan 100, fp4
>colourplus
>range of superias
>fuji nph400

i will probably only shoot 1 or 2 rolls max per camera

Let's talk about photo paper.
I been learning dark room printing with a local photograph, he provides chemicals and paper during for this. Next time I want to rent his lab and print by myself, but I need to get my own paper.
I've been eyeing some 18*24cm Pearl Ilford multigrade RC paper. I don't like very shiny paper and the size seem like a good compromise, not too small, not too big (and expensive) either. Anyone knows if this is a good paper to start with?

photography is the art of not pressing the button. If your daily walk has nothing worth photographing then hold it. I like the calf though even if the photo itself isn't amazing. Scout your areas first for locations, then go there when the light is right (when it hits them from the correct side)

>>
>>4152796
what formats are you printing?
also just go with 8x10. buy whatever is the cheapest if you're just gonna learn. I do 4 sheets if I've finished a roll and print one neg from it.
1. test print for contact sheet
2. contact sheet
3. test print the negative with different exposures to see what looks best
4. final print of negative
>>
>>4153240
I mean I already have the basics. Did two sessions where we went over doging & burning and split grading.
Obviously I still need practice but I already know what I'm doing, so I want to print decent formats and papers to get good looking prints, while also keeping the cost down (avoiding baryta altogether for now). Ilford 7x9.5" seems like a good compromise.
Also I don't do contact sheets as I scan the roll beforehand so I already know which neg I want to print.
Have you ever tried any alternative processes, toning your prints, cyanotype, collodion, lith? It all looks like a lot of fun.
>>
>>4153280
i've done some toning and lith.
not that it's an alternative process, but i've done my fair share of large prints through wall projection.

I've neem getting very experimental with my BW development. This was developed in rodinal 1+125 at 35 degrees Fahrenheit for 3 hours semi stand.

Very surprised this worked at all but I've heard that almost all the development or atleast a significant portion happens in the first like 10 minutes even with stand development.

If you're cautious about everything, temp, dilution, timing, agitation, then everything should be fine. I was extra careful the first times, checked several times dilutions and temperature, carefully organized my work space, wrote down all the steps, repeated them in my head. Might have gotten a bit too autistic and anxious, but everything turned out fine. I later showed my first negatives to an experienced analog photog who told me they were fine.
Tl:dr: be careful and plan everyhting and your first devs will be fine. It's not that complicated.
>>
>>4153554
There is definitely film that stays clear purple no matter how long you fix it, so that is probably specific to whatever film he was using. If it is not fixed enough it will be kind of foggy or opaque and will turn black after being exposed to light for a while. You could leave a piece in the sun for a while and compare how dark the unexposed parts are with a piece you kept in the dark.

None of the modern B&W chems are too bad but if you're worried then just use Rodinal at stand dev dilutions. Spent fixer is worse because it contains metallic silver.

are vintage pentax or nikon lenses better?i own 2 cameras but i don't know which to build a lens collection for

I have an old Retina Reflex IV on my bench going through a full CLA and it's my most challenging repair yet.

I resolved the original issue which was dry grease and I did a full disassembly, clean and lube with lithium grease, graphite and molybdenum grease, and I got it 90% of the way back together. I have to re-install some springs, get the shutter plate to line up with the cam and advance mechanism, and properly align the shutter speed and aperture plates which is proving to be difficult but doable.
>>
>>4154781

Depends on which Pentax. Some of the older M42 screwmount models lend themselves well to cheap used lenses. I have a Spotmatic with a Rikenon 55/1.4 that I did a complete CLA on and it's just a great combination. You can find those Rikenon 55/1.4s for cheap if you look and they give excellent results. And if you get a rough one, bring it to me I'll make it like new.

As for Nikon, also depends on the model. A lot of the pre-AI lenses are coated for B&W film if that's what you plan to shoot, then build your system accordingly. I've ran the gamut on Nikkor lenses and you can also find them on the cheap, but in reality you only need three lenses for a good system, a decent wide, a fast normal like f1.4 and a decent telephoto. With vintage stuff, you're talking 28/50/135. My Nikon F3 is a little more crazy on the lens spectrum, 17/50/300, but it works.

ever done work on an Olympus 35 RC? the screw on my shutter speed dial fell off and now my shutter indicator in the viewfinder is stuck on 500 so in A my light meter thinks it's set to 500 even though when I turn the shutter speed dial it (sounds like it) goes through all of the speeds.

I'm looking for a replacement screw but I don't know the size and now I think without the screw it's lost some tension somewhere resulting in the stuck shutter indicator.

any advice?

Since you already got an answer for M42 and Nikon I'll say also that the K mount has a ton of great manual focus lenses that continue to sell for far less than their quality suggests they should. Probably the most notable example of this is the M 50 1.7, but there are others (like the K 28 3.5). I agree with the other poster that you're mainly looking for three lenses around 28, 50, and the low 100 range, and the K mount has many good mf options in all three ranges.

Is there a significant difference between manufacturers like hanimex, sigma, chinon, pentax, etc.

Pentax itself is split into multiple series for film era lenses:

K - Original k mount series, short production, heavy and late and SOME, not all, are better than later lenses. Hyped into oblivion although some like the 28mm 3.5 are really very good.

M - Successor series to K based around being as small as possible, some lenses were made small at the expense of optical quality but most are as good as the earlier K series. Good to adapt as they are very small.

A - more or less the same as M but redesigned to allow for AP, a mixture of M and K lenses and some new designs, the start of the decrease in build quality. Probably the best investment as user lenses.

F - their first mainstream autofocus lenses, mostly just rehoused A lenses, not a big selection but all supposed to be to be quite good. Most made of plastic.

FA - modernised F lenses with a larger selection.

In terms of 3rd party K mount brands excluding modern ones I would go for :

Tokina/Hoya
Sigma
Cosina
Vivitar (series 1 only)
Chinon
Ricoh
Porst

Having a ton of diff films complicated things. Odds are you'll feel like you don't have the correct film loaded half the time, you'll be tempted to save certain 'special' rolls for some special situation that may or may not ever happen, and your photos won't have a consistent look to them despite being from the same trip.

Packing a brick or two of the same film is so much more liberating than having a few rolls of 5+ different films

I don't think so (pic related) it depends on what you're shooting and how. some of my favorite photos were shot on overcast days because there's even light and no shadows.

Youtubers are just selling a lifestyle. The carefree, jet-setting point and shoot lifestyle that they sell is desirable and Contax cameras look slim and slick (and signal status), so they are a pretty obvious choice for this type of content.

But yeah they are fragile and unreliable so not a great choice for the average consumer. I have absolutely no data to back up this claim, but I bet a modern USM lens on something like a Canon A2 is sharper than the Zeiss glass on those Contax point and shoot units.

As someone who at some point was into both fountain pens (just calligraphy actually, I wasn't hell bent on using fountain pens, the nib and ink are the only important part) and film photography, your opinion is painfully uninformed and shows that you've never actually tried either.
What you wrote is just what posers or pretentious people who think they need an "objective" reason to like stuff say.

>>
>>4156327
This is starting to look a lot more like an autistic hobby with all of the spec sheets the gearfags here memorize...
>>
>>4156328
Spec autism is born from expensive shit, since people want to make sure they get their moneys worth if even the most basic point and shoot that can be said to do a better job than a phone is $1000. So they research a ton, and become amateur experts in the gear, and argue, because they don't like their $1000+ purchase being threatened.

Meanwhile mainline phone cameras, once serviceable digishits, are getting kind of bad due to weird looking/inauthentic AI detail inpainting, driving more people to camera gear, and also driving more spec autism because they want to make damn sure it's better than their phone.

Any recs on a solid service to send my film to develop? Got 35mm rolls of Kodak ColorPlus and Kentmere Pan 100 to develop.

I've been looking at Process One since they seem to be the cheapest per-roll, but also had an eye on State Film Lab and The Darkroom since they have more options for processing.

I just want to get it developed and scanned, and want to hold onto the negatives. don't need prints or anything else really
>>
>>4156345
I use The Darkroom, better than whoever my local store sends film off to. Turnaround time in usually just over a week after sending film out for me.
>>
>>4156345
The darkroom is cheap but i've gotten chemical splatter on my film

Also their scans fucking suck
>>
>>4156349
who do you recommend for scans? I've only used two labs but of the two, The Darkroom was better
>>
>>4156350
Brooktree can actually get the colors from superia 400 right. The darkroom always blows my highlights and fudges the white balance and contrast hard. Trying too hard for the "film look" desu.

But really buy a cheap manual macro lens for a digital camera or a flatbed and do them yourself

The last film camera I had suffered from shutter drag as well as some slop in the mirror or somewhere in the focusing screen-prism-ovf arrangement

I could take 5 shots of a rock on a tripod and 2 would miss focus and if i was over 1/500 there was a 50% chance it would look like i used a gradient filter

Shit sucked

Both cutouts are for the viewfinder framing, and the filmback. This way it's cropped perfectly for pano and not bleeding into the film spockets.

I've heard that about ilford pan 400 too, not sure what to think
>>
>>4156612
They're bullshitting you, the base is different. Kentmere is thinner, softer and curlier. Easier to scratch too. The emulsion is basically the same.

That I can't confidently confirm or deny.

BTW, kent 400 is not HP5

does the zone system work for color film or is it only meant for black and white? say I pull process 2 stops to keep my highlights from getting blown out on B&W stock, what happens to the same composition if it's color fim? I know pushing and pulling relies on shadows being done first so you can mess with how long the highlights cook, but I'm assuming color film is a bit more complicated
>>
>>4156761
Zone system is really usable if you plan to print yourself with a enlarger to make sure your negative is usable to the max
Color is less maleable so you'll just have burnt highlight and black shadows if you fuck around too much
>>
>>4155652
The film also makes a big diff, it you were shooting lomo tiger (kodak gold) it would look much more detailed

Is the Nikon N75 a good film camera?
>>
>>4157236
>Nikon N75

It's alright. If you're talking about what it's capable of. Any camera can be a good camera. The shooter, film, composition, and more matter moreso than the gear itself.

For me personally, I prefer more more mechanical versions of the Nikon series. FG20 is one of my favorites since it's lightweight.
>>
>>4156942
I don't get this. So Lomo 100 is just old expired Gold 100? Or Kodak is still making gold 100 and exclusively selling it to Lomo for some reason?

thanks! those are spots that looked like fun (and appeared on all of the recommendations lists as you say). if you have any other suggestions and not just for shooting, send em my way too.

I wanted to do a morning hike in the hills and obviously sunset on the beach. A winery could also be cool. the weather might actually work out for this weekend, I was worried a storm would hamper things.

Hello I am new to this, is there a disposable camera that is decent at shooting in low light conditions? The last one I tried(Fujifilm quicksnap) didnt work well in low light.
Please help. thank you
>>
>>4157519
no, disposable cameras always have like f8 lenses and iso400 film
>>
>>4157386
>>4157315
No, it's not gold. Lomo is the stuff that kodak puts into disposable cameras, the Kodacolor family. Currently kodak offers only kodacolor 200 in the form of colorplus, but there were also separately sold 100, 400 and 800 versions
Kodacolor is more saturated then gold, with a bit bigger grain and doesn't have this godawful dye crossover that modern gold has. Or maybe not crossover, but gold 200 looks like fucking overexposed ORWO NC21, it's literally the worst good color film currently on the market. Not counting NC500 of course, because it's a bad color film

It’s not expired (don’t know whether its colorplus or gold but most likely the latter based off of the lack of piss color cast).
kodak still makes the film in master rolls but don’t cut them up and put them in cartridges.
