/fgt/ daily reminder (courtesy by anon): one stop per decade is hipster bullshit

>negative film ages better than positive
>black and white better than color
>slow films better than fast
>storage conditions (dry/cool) matter more than years

>Negative film is shot 1 or 2 stops over exposed and then PULLED in development so that you build more density in the exposure and develop less such that the fog is limited

>slide/positive film is shot at box speed or overexposed and pulled.
If you home develop you can also use benzotriazole as a restrainer for the the first developer in E6 process

my Pentax IQZoom has a "panoramic" switch that just cuts off the top and bottom of the frame. I'm assuming there's some post processing step to handle these types of pictures as the manual says to notify the lab so they can handle them (assuming they have the capability).

what's the step(s) the lab does with these? is it more of a printing thing?

If you want decent image quality out of your negs without wanting to rig up a DSLR scanning thing then this is about as good as it gets. Slow but gets the job done, however the backlight is too weak to scan reversal film effectively so if you like to shoot a lot of that in 35mm then DSLR scanning is pretty much your only option.
>>
>>4146359
I have a Nikon es2 and a 50mm f2.8z to scan some positives. Not really worth the effort. Pretty content with my flatbeds honestly.
>>
>>4146344
I started DSLR scanning after a flatbed scan from a lab pissed me off. Some cheap film scanners are surprisingly good for what they are though, see Kodak Pakon 135. Megapixel count is low but the quality is pretty good.

If it came with 4x5 holders then you got yourself a V800, which is the same machine most labs use at least around here for scanning MF and sheet. It's a good find for sure. Even just for MF it's a significant improvement from V500/600.

I did a little digging and other cameras have it too and as I thought, it's just a gimmick to give the picture a panorama "look" by cutting off the top and bottom of the frame. kinda lame but at least it doesn't hinder anything about the camera

The Wikipedia page explains it perfectly well. DX only tells iso and roll length, and most cameras can't even read the last part of the dx code anyway.

Here's velvia 50 and provia 100f anyway.

I've kinda asked this question a few times before but what setup would get me 8/10 quality scans but with the shortest/fastest time from starting scan to having my jpgs/tiffs? I shoot 95% 35mm 5% 6x9. Scanning a roll is $10 Australian at my local lab. I would like a setup that costs max 600$ but emphasis on the time aspect. I really don't spend much time editing, all I do is color cast/white balance/crop and I kinda can't be fucked manually adjusting shit when scanning eah frame. Bonus points if I can scan 35mm pano in 6x9

No, 6 hours to scan a 36 roll of film, you have feed and manually activate each scan, and you're left with an overcooked hpeg you can barely correct oh and there's no ICE so it'll be covered I'm dust unless you meticulously clean each frame before you scan, making 6 hours into 8 hours, just use your dslr/mirrorless and a light board
>>
>>4146406

I bulk rolled some Kodak double x about a week ago. Left the rolls on my floor (probably 20-25c temperature). Left a leader out obviously but then when I went to use the roll just now, I pulled a bit more out and there was this distinct color where the leader was left out. Photo is shit but right side was olive color, left was more regular greenish. Anyone know why?

Thank you very much for this. Whether read or not (I suspect the higher end compacts do read the exposure details, the Olympus Stylus manual implies this when it mentions positive film metering differently and providing lesser exposure under flash), I wanted to know if the last two dx contacts had the 1/2 stop +- indication on slide film.

Anyone know what the cheapest options are for red green and blue filters are for someone who wants to try trchrome photography? I know I need an R25A, 58 green and 47B blue but what are the closest 'aproximates' I can buy to not need to pay 20-30 bucks per filter?
>>
It depends partly on your filter size but you could try pig iron filters.
They claim to be as good as hoya but half the cost, whether that's the case I don't know yet as I haven't developed the roll I shot with their red filter but that could work at least just for the red
For blue and green you might find a decently price hoya filter on ebay or something.
Just try to get the filters for the largest lens size you're willing to use then step up rings to make up any difference, should save you some money if you want to do trichroming with more than the one lens

I bought the 8200i SE almost 2 years ago. I already own an Epson v550 that I use for 120 and modded it for 4x5 negs. I also have access to a v850 at work.

Reasons I like it:
>Small AF, can literally fit in a small backpack or on a cluttered desk. Very portable.
>No moving parts unlike flatbed, less to break
>Silent unlike flatbed
>Comes with a nice case, seriously
>You can 3d print yourself 8mm and 16mm/110 holders
>Image quality surpasses any 35mm scans I have done before it

Reasons I would not buy an 8200:
>Not a do all scanner. More of a 35mm luxury item.
>The included software sucks badly.
>No batch processing.
>Some of the older hardware such as the 7200/7400 may fit your needs instead. That is your call.
>The IR dust/scratch feature does not work with silver halide emulsions.

That said, I do like mine a lot.

Never used it but always hear nice comments about it, the only think is that to my understanding you have to move each frame into the thing.

Anyway.

First time bulk loading, for some reason got fogging on two different rolls on the same place. I was able to salvage some, so have some weekend snapshits.

My experience with the Plustek-Scanner has been consistently negative:

I was looking for an inexpensive way to digitize all my slides and negatives, but had to realize, however, that the device is much too slow for large quantities and can only be loaded with relative difficulty, and I never got a handle on the color space profile in underexposed shots.
I also always had problems when the slide wasn't completely flat, but had slightly rippled over the years in the frame without glass.

I thought the side dust protection flaps were a good idea, until I realized after a while that they are actually supposed to protect against dust from the outside, but then more protect the dust inside!
I have no way of getting decent access to the inside of the optics to clean them without completely disassembling the entire device.
It was very frustrating!

Now I use a slide copy attachment with a bellows extension for my SLR with a macro lens, which is significantly faster and I have more options for intervention.

It was a lot more expensive to buy, but in terms of quantity, the cost per scanned photo is just about 2 cents per picture.
Together with the significant time savings and the better results, this is very acceptable to me.

Ultimately, with the resolution of the SLR, even with ASA 100, you can now see the grain of the film more than the pixels.
With the Ectachrome 400 I mostly use, interesting effects result from the coarser film grain. I like this.

Digital composite panoramas are probably harder to frame. On positive, they often give up plenty of overlap to crop in and find a good framing, but they need to be framed with naked eye. So if you can find any info on composition for them, it'll still do you good. I imagine that it's not something that's often discussed, though. Best source of information would probably be wide angle cinematography. Framing guidelines are the same. Wide lenses, making sure camera isn't far from being levelled horizontally and vertically, leading lines, framed corners...

Tri x 400 is a 400 ISO film. The dial tells the meter which speed film you've got in your Camera.
If you want to push your Film to 1600, you need to meter and shoot as if your film was 1600 ISO and push your film for the stop difference between 400iso and 1600iso. 400 to 1600 is three stops.
Not every lab does this but if you're developing yourself you can obviously do whatever you want.

As your cameras meter doesn't go to 1600 you might need to get an external meter and set your exposure according to that. No need for anything fancy, phone apps work fine

>>
>>4148037
>>4148052
Tri-X at 1600 ISO is just +2 stop.
Set your lightmeter to 800 ISO, and when it tells you the correct exposure just add a stop of either shutter speed or aperture
exemple :
> if the camera set at 800 ISO tells you the picture is good at f/4 & 1/30sec, then the right setting at 1600 ISO is either f/4 & 1/60sec OR f/2.8 & 1/30sec
Also make sure to tell the lab to push it +2 when deving, otherwise your pictures will be too underexposed to be used

The contax T does not have manual controls for shutter speed, it's only aperture priority.

>>4148037
Shoot at 800 and push 1 stop. You will get one stop less of shutter speed, but that's just the limitation of your camera you have to live with. You can increase the contrast further afterwards, either when printing or digitally.

the contax T goes to 1000, set it at 1000, that's 2 thirds off 1600.
your developer will also play a part in how the negative turns out. pushing it 800+ kills shadow detail and increases contrast, but with a comepnsating developer like diafine you can recover a lot of shadow detail. XTOl is probably more forgiving as well. with something like d76 you're probably getting something similar to moriyama's style. I would not recommend rodinal.
>>
>>4148532
Except there's literally no difference in dev time and look when developing tri-x @ 800 in d76.

Started film half a year ago and worked thru some ghetto solutions (window and phone cam, acrylic glass, monitor, flash, etc)
For 35mm, i have one of those negative holders that comes with a backlight and holds a strip of 6 pictures.
Then there are some metal rails (flash holders + table tripod) to perfectly hold my camera in place (A Fujifilm X-T2 with 35mmF2.0 + Macro adapter).
The camera is thetered and each picture taken is automatically stored on my PC, negated + orange mask removed.
To speed up the process, i just attach the full length 35mm strip to the holder an pull it through.
Yes, this scratches the film in theroy, but never enough for me to notice.
The only problem, and i never though i had to admit it, is corner sharpness.
It's bad enough that i have to go to F16 on the lens to get useable "scanned" negative.

For medium format, I gave up and give into an Epson V850 Pro + Paid for the SilverFast Software.
I take all the goddies like the infrared scratch removal and automatic color calibration, the JPGs are quite useable.
The downside is that it takes forever. It's not so bad for 6x4.5 medium format where scanning takes like 20 minutes for a 120 roll.
But for the 35mm film, it simply takes way to long to set it up and batch scan.
>>

>>
>>4148767
Well I was at work and my coworker browsing ebay and saw the bundle, and thought it would be funny to lowball the buy with a price that no sane person would accept. I didn't message and negotiate a price I literally just sent an offer for much lower than it was worth using the ebay offer feature since he was accepting.

Once he accepted I just followed through with the purchase because why wouldn't I for that price?
>>

He probably did the same exact thing and just wanted it to be gone. You'll do the same. It's a vicious cycle of buyers remorse.
>>
>>4148778
When he brought it to me he said he mostly deals in arriflexes but sometimes sells other stuff and his ebay page reflects that. Said since it wasn't fully working he just wanted it gone.

Once I get my kicks out of it I'll probably pass it on to another but I have actually been wanting to get a large format camera to try out.

I did some day job work for my photo lab fixing some issues with the building recently. Unsure how they keep the lights on. 5 or 6 employees and they told me they only process approx 100 rolls a day. At 10 a roll average for just dev (c41 e6 bw) even with scanning framing and printing unsure how they make any money desu. They do own the land and it's valued at 10 Mil though cause of zoning.

Even at 5 workers at approx 1500 to 2k in wages (including stuff you don't see when you pay an employee like stat holiday pay, vacation, sick days) I'm still trying to do the math of it is worth it. Is the real money in scanning? Drum scanning? Framing? Film sales? Not trying to dox my lab or shit on them or anything but trying to figure out the math here.

Anyone work In a lab that can chime ij

>is Xtol only available in powder form?
yes
>can it be made for one shot use
no, you cant guarantee even distribution of the various chemicals between divided batches
>the whole bag have to be made at once and used in 3 months before it goes bad?
yes but most people say it lasts longer when in a properly sealed bottle and mixed with distilled water.

Kodak outsourced Xtol production to a Chinese company called SinoPromise--Their d-76 is fine but there is much criticism of their xtol. Recommend Adox xt-3 or Foma Excel (xtol clones available in smaller and larger quantities) rather than the Kodak product.

>>4149205
prints and framing are usually the more profitable side of it. the collapse of widespread printing (families sharing 3 or 4 sets of prints among relatives of holiday photos) is actually what did more damage to kodak than the decline of film use.
>>4149184
any chance it's east coast?
>>4149026
in almost every case, storing film in the fridge (freezer for longer term, but thaw before shooting) is better than at room temp. Avoids decline in sensitivity and base fog to an extent.
its not like film will go bad when its outside of the fridge, but will age less quickly when kept cold and dry.

Technically, one should always mix the whole bag of powder because its a mechanical mix of chemicals with with correct amounts but no uniformity guaranteed. Dunno about Xtol but in practice I've used D76 as one shot mixing 11g from my jar of powder to 100ml of stock for four 4x5 sheets in Paterson Orbital tank at time with no problem. Move the stuff from bag to a air tight jar and give it a good shake before scooping it on balance.

there's a "liquid" XTOL clone from bellini, but it's just better to go with the powder form. XTOL will last you at least 6 months if you keep them in 1 liter bottles.

XTOL has been fine for over a year now. the lab I dev my color at only devs in xtol and they switched over to neotenal (which required a starter) until xtol was good again.

Should I pick (And may Allah forgive for uttering this name) a Kiev 60 or just save for a Pentacon Six?

You could fill the cleaner with water and put the whole tank in there probably.

Save for a Pentacon.
The more people who think soviet cameras suck ass the better (for me and other soviet camera lovers).
>>

Jokes on you I love soviet shitters. But one think is "quirky" and another is "the damn thing broke and no one would look at it to even consider repairing it" and thats what I have read about the Kiev.

Kiev 60 is better than Pentacon in every way imaginable. I get this whole "haha sovieet suck ass" meme, but it is true only for Zenits and the like
>the damn thing broke
My damn thing works perfectly for 4 years already. Meanwhile everyone I know who has a Pentacon had to repair it at least 2 times

Buy Yashica TLR. It won’t break your bank and it will present some really unique experience and good photos.(bought my Yashica-24 in mint condition for $80 6 months ago)
Ignore pentafag, he is retarded.
Kiev 60 is not so bad, but 300 bucks for it on eBay it is too much.

The last time I did any film photography was in 2012. At a rave with ISO 3200 BW Film. It went pretty well. Now I've got a Canon EOS Rebel G sitting around.
I want to photograph insects with my macro lens with it. Maybe butterflies emerging from coccoons, or bees at a beehive. It'll be tough and I'm sure some will be failed and blurry but I'm willing to try it.
Slide film seems really great. More fun to hold onto the negative(positive?) but only ISO 100-125 could be problematic unless I really nail that flash exposure. I don't want just a black background. Would the colours turn out better if I don't use flash?
My main goal is to just have some fun and potentially get a different look to mix it up from images I'm already taking. I could imagine bringing my film body with me and just slapping it on mid-sesh, on a normal digital shoot day.
Anyone have any suggestions for me of what kind of film would be worth trying? Are there any ISO 800 film that don't suck? That would be sure to have nice bright backgrounds, probably. I thought Infrared BW could be cool, too, maybe.
>>
>>4149667
Not really, 300 bucks is about right for it. It's a very capable camera, with wonderful lenses, so I'd pay 300$ for it. Plus CLA, of course, because old soviet lubricants suck ass
>>
>>4149676
I know, I sold my one years ago. It’s a good camera, but it has a bunch of inherent issues. Most hated by me is pictures overlapping.
but to be honest, I don't know, maybe 300 bucks is ok for this and I still haven't gotten used to how prices for cameras have changed in general. Also it is much cheaper there, 3 times cheaper actually.

No scanner will do what you want at that budget. Pakons are the closest but expect to pay $2.5k AUD. All of them require significant amounts of frame by frame adjustments.
>>
>>4149670
>Are there any iso 800 films that don't suck?
Colour or bw? Portra 800 is nice, but expensive. The other 800 ISO option is Cinestill 800T, but you'll fight halation if your background is too bright.

As for bw, you could push any 400 speed film to 800 and I'd guess you wouldn't even be able to see it on the negative. Pulling something like delta or Pmax would also be an option if you wanted finer grain.

>Infrared
Cool look, but exposure times are usually 1-5 seconds and you can't really focus properly.
Pretty tough to shoot insects like that.
>>
>>4147064
Not him, but I've found that hp5 in rodinal was very grainy at 400. I'm sure pushing 2 stops is going to have ridiculous grain.
>>
>>4149776
Do go on, different anon here with that camera. Do I just need to clean and relube to avoid overlap at the end of my rolls?

>>
>>4149917
It's not "just", unfortunately. You need to know what you're doing. Fortunately for us, Ukrainians, Arsenal still does CLA on their cameras, but idk what the situation is elsewhere. From what I've read here, for some weird reason, western technicians don't want to CLA kievs, while accepting (much more temperamental) Pentacon Six
>>
>>4149823
Thanks anon. Pushing 400 film does seem like fun. I forget what it's all about so I have something to look up. My first roll will probably be Portra 400 or 800.
The lab that I'm thinking of getting my stuff developed has stuff like this:
https://downtowncamera.com/shop/downtown-camera-vision-3-5207-daylight-250-iso-135-colour-36exp-prepaid-with-xtra-hi-res-tiff-scans-included/ed3a4380-8c29-0139-bf19-00163e90e196?variation=2972744
It seems like decent savings. Especially with the high rez TIF scan included. But how does it stack up? I guess it'll take time to find out. Just trying out different rolls of film will take a while, seemingly. But I could see myself sticking to Kodak because of this program which could be fun to read about:
https://downtowncamera.com/blog/downtown-camera-amfm-membership
>Halation
IDK what this, so a second thing to look up.
>Infrared long exposure
Maybe a long exposure of a bee hive would work, but it would just be meaningless nothing. MAYBE it could show the areas of the hive that're more warmed than the other parts from more activity of the bees but I highly doubt it.
TY for all your help anon. My film photography resurgence journey continues...

I'm going to attempt adding an anti-halation layer back on cinestill 800T 120. Its really the only easy way to get Vision3 in 120, the respooled options are 65mm and thus get you visible sprocket holes.

I'm thinking of mounting the film tightly on a curved surface emulsion down, and spray a coat of water soluble jet black dye on the back. The shoot and wash the dye off before developing.

Tell me why it wont work before I do it
>>
>>4149440
No its not. Get sodium carbonate, NOT BICARBONATE aka baking soda. 10% solution. Let sit for 2 min, then dump. Should be a little red in color but no remjet yet. Then fill with water and shake viciously, so hard your arms have nothing left. Dump, should be black as the abyss. Rinse a few times. Develope normally. After dev, dump roll in bucket with warm water, a little dish soap and surfacant like photoflo. Run every inch of the film through your fingers wearing nitrile gloves. Rub it gently even. Hang it out to dry. The water will be a little darker, thats the remaining remjet a motion picture lab would have removed with a special cloth made from some crazy animal part, cant remember atm.

I 100% guarantee this method will leave you 0 remjet.
>>
>>4150175
For what it's worth, you can convert sodium bicarbonate into sodium carbonate with an oven.

Makes sense. I bought mine off a boomer in Florida, everything generally feels smooth, but he seemed like he wanted to get rid of it. I only get touching frames near the end of the roll and if I let the lever get moved at all between shots. I'm thinking of finding a way to lock/secure the lever until I need to advance. Has some occasional light leaks, too, so I may need to put new foam in.

I got it for around 200$ plus shipping, and was glad it at least wasn't one of the others I've seen/heard of that is full of issues. I also like the viewfinder. The exposure meter works, too. Weird stuff, but cool to see how these things were implemented in different places.

Pardon my ignorance how did anon mess up B/w dev with temps? Is it a pararodinal thing? I've never had issues, but I also just use mildly warm water and never measure temps.

For color I use a sous vide cooker to help accurate temps. Should I be doing that for b/w?

I bought the files for a design called the Kraken 6x12.
http://frozenphoton.com/kraken/
The design includes a focusing helical you can buy off ebay so you're not stuck with infinity focus.

My only complaint with the camera is that light leaks happen easily.
The film winding design doesnt make the roll tight enough when you finish it so you need to open the back in very subdued light

Not that bad, but there are near mint 60s on ebay for like 215, and until very recently full kit still in factory packaging and after CLA was ~200. Now prices skyrocketed after someone posted an arax 60 for 12k, it became the only listing with k60 for a good while, and now everyone thinks that their rusty, non-CLA'd kit is worth 12k too. Yes and no. The state-owned company is dead. However, astrum ltd, that was founded in 1995 by Svema employees, in Svema buildings and using Svema's equipment, is still very much alive. I recommend Foto 100 or NK-2 for your first time. Wonderful films.

Let me preface by stating I'm used to photographic handholding with my go to rangefinder which is very user friendly so don't shit on me too bad.
The shutter release on my FED model 1 doesn't click when pressed and the shutter speed dial won't advance, it always moves back to the previous position. Film might be loaded incorrectly but when I try to advance the film, the inverse knob rotates the other direction suggesting the it's collecting in the uptake spool.
It's my first soviet shitty and I really want to like it. How fucked am I? Any insight or place where I can find an online manual? Have had no luck for this model 1 FED.

Hi, scanning question here
Started scanning color at home. I scan with an Epson v500 using Silverfast, and whenever I try to convert it using NLP the results just seem off and I'm better off using Silverfast. Is Silverfast adjusting/correcting my positives? How to I get it to scan completely flat so it won't fuck up for NLP?
>>
>>4151095
The thing is, people buy dirt cheap soviet cameras that have been collecting dust in a drawer for decades without servicing and expect them to work as well as a leica that's been pampered all its life. You have to pay the price for a soviet camera in good condition from trusted sellers (or send it to a trusted SOVIET camera service shop). It's still cheaper that western equivalents, but not dirt cheap. That's the first thing.
Second thing is they do work in quirky ways sometimes, you have to look up what to do and what not to do with them. Typically, moving the speed dial without first cocking the shutter is a no go. You can easily find tutorials, including on youtube, on how to operate these cameras, because they have a small but dedicated community in the west.
And last- yes, some of the consumer models from the 70s-80s are cheap plastic trash, they never pretended to be anything else. Equating those to early (semi-)professional cameras is a big mistake, the latter are quality cameras that will yield great results on par with german cameras of that time.
>>
>>4151168
Don't use NLP, return it if you didn't pirate it. In epsonscan, choose "professional mode", "normal" mode in the preview window. Select your frame, then go to "Histogram Adjustment" in "Adjustments" and set white and black points manually, it should be fairly easy. Then, after you've scanned the photo, go to PS, invert it and adjust levels, brightness and contrast to neutral balance. Sounds complicated, but I promise it's not and this method will give perfect results each time, as long as there's at least some info on the negative itself

>Doing proper color reversal on negatives in lightroom is a bitch

What software are you scanning with? Not sure how's it with your unit, but I have real old Epson unit that is Epson Perfection 1650, and have no problem with negatives, I scan using Epson's own TWAIN thingie which gives me a scan that is already workable with, and before scanning you can fine-tune the scanning via preview it does. I then scan using it to Adobe PS as Epson TWAIN is not standalone software. As it is legacy software from 1999, I use it on my old Thinkpad with XP but maybe could be used with newer win too. Yours is newer scanner and likely has newer software it's meant to be used with, which might be better.
