Developing C-41 at a local lab and camera scanning at home has been the cheapest for me. I think it's $6 a roll for both and once you get the hang of it scanning goes quickly.

Like you said C-41 development isn't worth it unless you're shooting a ton.

I've been an avid Minolta guy for a few years now. Though the weight of my SRT303b is kinda getting to me recently. Also no meter, but that's whatever to be honest.
I'm looking into Olympus as an alternative, love the way their lenses feel.
Is an OM-4 with an Olympus Zuiko 50mm F1.8 a good parallel/substitute for the SRT303b + MC Rokkor 50mm F1.4 I've been daily driving?
Or would I be better off with a Pentax ME Super and a SMC Pentax M 50mm F1.8?

Also, anyone ever use an Olympus Pen/Pen ft? I've seen some pictures taken with the 38mm f1.8 and I quite liked it. Been thinking of getting one.

I would recommend to buy XD11 or X700 if you are looking for a new body. Minolta lenses are great and have good overall condition comparing to more popular brands like canonikon. And this is definitely better than pentaxes IMHO.

I’ve used the Om system and Pentax-
M system.

At the end of the day the Pentax M system is a cheapened version of their previous lenses (K series) and cameras designed to compete directly with the OM system. They are worse than OM lenses and are basically unusable wide open. Pentax 50mm’s are good stopped down. Everything else in that series is not very good.

People complaining about the ring shutter speed need to appreciate that the ME super has a push button system which is absolutely dreadful: the meter is very good however.

I would get the best OM lens you can get in your budget and an OM20.

havign the shutter ring on the lens mount is weird as first but you get used to it really fast (and it feel like messing with a small cubic MF SLR like those mamiyas)
be careful depending on what model you chose, those are old and can have fuck ups or downsides

To be honest; I think migrating systems is not particularly necessary if you have to re-buy all of your lenses again. I swapped from Pentax M to Nikon F because the lenses were genuinely better.

I really wanted to take a landscape at the top of a nearby hill once when it was overcast as fuck but sometimes sun would peak through.
Halfway through walking to the spot it started raining again but I just went the rest of the way anyway and took the picture.
Probably wouldn't do it if it was pissing it down but light rain is fine.
Snow seems like a complete non-factor unless you live in the arctic circle or something.
I'd be more worried about condensation in the lens when you go back inside

To actually answer your question, probably the latter unless I was already outside in which case I'd just be careful or put the camera away if it's heavy rain

I shoot black and white so it hurts a bit less, only colour roll I've shot was a gold 200 roll last november/december and that was £8 for a 24 exp roll, now it's more like 10 or 12 if you can even find some.
I don't know how some people do it when colour can easily cost >£16 for "budget" stocks or worse if it's something discontinued or just higher quality
I've heard people mention that the price of film is just normalising to what it used to be during peak film days but that seems like bullshit.

I do! it's got timers for each step and a little animated tank that rotates when it's time for agitations. you can customize almost each step or timer as well as your agitation scheme such as for the first 60 seconds and then for 10 seconds each minute. you can set your default film size and parameter settings ex. 35mm and I only do 1 roll at a time so I only need 300ml of each mixture but if the dilution is a little wonky and I get 11.7ml+288.3ml I'll change the final mixture to 310ml and it works out easier

Scanning in general is enough for me to abandon 35mm entirely. At least with 645 slides I already have a good sized picture in my hand and can enjoy it that way.

negative film stored in freezer from 97 should be fine (let it mellow at room temp for an hour before loading). Recommend shooting part or all of a roll at box speed and developing it and then see if you need to adjust more than that for later rolls.
the much vaunted "1 stop per decade rule" is hipster trash
here are more useful axioms:
1. usually storage conditions (cold/dry/dark) matter more than age
2. age reduces sensitivity (iso)
3. age reduces sensitivity of faster >250-400 iso films much more quickly
4. black and white ages better than color of equivalent iso
5. general best practice is to shoot some of the film at box speed, see how fogged it is, and then to over expose the next roll 1.5 stops and have the film pulled in development.
This is crucial because you are trying to build density on the negative that outpaces the fog's impact on the image. Ergo more exposure, less development

Wild card: if it's slide film, shoot box speed and see if it's shit, if it's shit you have to get way creative with overexposure, under development of the first developer + benzotriazole then normal development for later steps. slide film is much more complicated for this

I have a photography tutorial book from 1997 at home and obviously everything in it is shot on film, a mixture of 35mm and MF. What gets me is that the photos in it look very clean, documentative and similar to digital photos. Like realistically there is very little difference in quality at this level of enlargement and in print.

What I am curious about is why film photos taken currently look a lot more ‘filmy’ than those taken at the peak of film usage? They seem much more grainy, the colours are usually quite off. And they just look like film more. Am I the only person that notices this?

As in pretty much any artistic medium, people have been trying to reach technical perfection. For photography it's sharp image, realistic colors, no grain, high resolution. That's what film and film camerashave been aiming towards for decades, and that trend continued on with digital cameras. But as always, once you have reach technical perfection, it becomes boring for artists and many depart from it for artistic purposes. For exemple with painting, after aiming towards photorealism for literally century and through different movements, painters started going more abstract, especially as photography progressed, because technical perfection had been reached and they needed something new to bring to the table.
The sort answer is: back then photographers wanted technical perfection. Now that perfection is available for the price of cheap compact camera or smartphone, people are looking specifically for that imperfect film look.

Cons:
-much smaller dynamic range than negative (usually 5-4 stops)
-harder to shoot and meter for (can't just use scene average 18% grey)
-less tolerant of development fuckups and storage related issues
-can no longer print fully analog (used to be possible either by kodak positive print or Cibachrome--although it is theoretically still possible by way of inter-negative, RA4 reversal printing, or by making color separations) i.e. you need to scan and then print digitally which is lame. Ironically back in the day slide was preferred for magazines because no print had to be made and tweaked, color separations were made directly and then printed.
-usually more expensive
-harder to find and harder to find places that develop and do so well.

Both have their use cases. Many here remember the slide film look from Textbooks and Magazines of yesteryear and their intense colors and dark blacks and see it as a big part of the "film look"

imma guess you're shooting outside and then leaving in a car? if the car is parked outside and gets to a similar temp inside as out, then while you're leaving the heater will warm the inside of the car gradually enough to avoid condensation (unless it's like a brand new lexus or something that heats up quick.) Honestly anything above 20f i wouldn't worry about just taking right inside unless it's like some high 70s apartment. In which case yeah google the bag method way lol.

alternatively try boiling it, i know it sounds weird but i bought one second hand that was bent like a fucking banana, boiling it for like 10 minutes straightened it right out and it also gave it the best clean ever.
im thinking your might have warped for some reason, or it needs a deep clean, and boiling it will do both.

ofc stir it around constantly so it doesnt sit against the bottom of the pot where temps might exceed those of boiling water.

scored an excellent grade pentax program plus (program a for non yanks) from keh. not having a shutter dial is a little weird but I'm so used to metering for shadows then recomposing that the compensation dial will be the biggest learning curve

Watch a video, on how to load and basic operation. Its not rocket science but its a good idea to familiarize with your specific camera before using it.

The prices of color film are fucked right now, so for a first try the cheapest black and white that you can find. Fomapan is a favorite of the thread. Mind that film has "speed" meaning that they are faster or slower to capture the light they are exposed too. Fomapan is usally ISO 100 so it would work great on exteriors, but not so great in dim light interiors (Unless you have a flash)

Learn about the triangle of exposition, sunny 16 or look for a light meter app for your phone. The shutter speed is going to affect how long you expose your film, so it depends of the circumstances. The other ring is for the aperture, move it and you can see a circle on the lens getting bigger or smaller, that also determines how much light its going to enter your film.

Try to locate a film lab that has fair prices in your area, you can look into selfdev if you like it but please make sure that you actually enjoy it.
Have fun, fucking up things its part of the experience so don't feel discouraged if you don't make great photos at the beginning, keep researching.

a fellow pentaxbro! great camera to start with since it's full manual so you'll learn how to take photos instead of letting the camera set the exposure. it does use batteries but only for the light meter, you can use an external light meter if you don't trust the meter in the camera but I found the K1000 I had to be pretty good.

last advice -. assuming you're not doing home dev so get your film developed by an actual photo lab and not CVS/Walmart/etc. the difference in quality will make you want to keep shooting and improving.

Rodinal loses shadow detail at about that rate (1/3 [usually] to 2/3 stop [faster films]). Tends to be a feature of concentrated one shot developers.
Sometimes people call it a "speed losing developer" but that sounds unnecessarily harsh. I've seen great results with acros+ rodinal both stand and regular development. Check Filmdev.org.

I've done 1+50 and pulled it to 125 in rodinal with really nice results. Wouldn't recommend too much agitation because it makes the grain worse (coarser) and the film and dev combo is already contrasty. Try 1+25 if you want more contrast. Recommend overexposing a bit as mentioned above. Also check fixing time on the film leader (drop one drop of mixed fixer on leader in light, see how long it takes to go translucent, double that time for fixing time of film) because sometimes high silver content films will under fix.

If I'm gonna shoot outside when it's snowing, is it true that I should crank the shutter speed high or low so the neg won't end up just a mess of white motion blur streaks?

I remember reading somewhere that you need to compensate for the snow by like 2 stops over-exposure otherwise you end up with murky grey snow.
Idk how true that is but if you are shooting in active snowfall, anything faster than 1/60 would work I assume unless the snow is falling very fast.
Maybe compensate with aperture instead if you're worried about streaks, most likely not going to see very far in heavy snowfall anyhow.

Yep, it works okay on daylight (Considering that is a point and shoot from the 70s)
I loaded with some Arista 400 since its the higher it goes
Ended using flash a lot, so gonna develop it tomorrow and see how it did it

The only slightly tricky part is color balancing because snow's actual color on the film varies depending on conditions which you can't see in situ because your brain shoops it on the fly.
