Still shooting with my GX9, almost a year since i got it. I love this camera, its not the best camera out there but it is the perfect camera for me.

Don't get the Panasonic GM1. Yes, it's smaller than the GX1, but it's a pain in the ass to use, especially if you use reading glasses. The autofocus misses regularly. If you use a manual lens it forces the electronic shutter for some reason. I like my GX1 much better.

At 1.7 it has vinegting, but it looks really good, it gives that vintage look and it's still pretty sharp, it can get sharper at 2.8 but wide open looks extremely good, almost as sharp as the 1.4 Leica.

At 1.8 vignetting will be reduced and further down untill 4.0 where is non existent, it shouldn't be a problem though as Lightroom or DxOlabs will autocorrect it, although I prefer the look it gives, really moody.

Check in Adorama because they sometimes include a cheap lens filter kit/cleaning with blower for the same price.

what benefits do MFT provide?
>>
>>4071056
It is even worse. For me, because it's small but still way better than a compact
>>
>>4070922
The price sounds about right. I'm not a fan, due to the AF motor being so slow that you can't use it with AF-C. (Panasonic bodies outright forbid it. Olympus bodies will hunt endlessly.)
>>
>>4071056
A capable solution in a small package.
>>
If I need a small interchangeable lens camera why should I buy a micro four thirds instead of a fuji?
>>
>>4071074
For what purpose would you ever use af-c?
>>
>>4071092
Metric ton of lenses that are good, cheap and available. Often very small and light primes, unless you're trying to go for the f/1.2 primes.

If you ever are going to work video into your creative work, great IS.

For Olympus specifically, highly weather-sealed bodies and lenses, smaller telephoto zooms and primes (I'm biased on weight and size as I tend to bring my camera when I'm hunting/scouting, and I bring it with when I'm flying every other week for work).
>>
>>4071094
The film simulations are a big appeal of Fuji for me. What would a good beginner m43 setup look like?
>>
>>4071100
GX85 with the 25 mm f/1,7 to learn the basics.
>>
>>4071056
>what benefits do MFT provide
I am an amateur photographer and I went from Nikon to m43. This is why:
Six years ago I bought a second hand Lumix g7 + 12-35mm 2.8 to take with me in a three months trip across Europe. I found myself shooting much more than with my Nikon. I could carry the camera and a nice glass without breaking my back, so I had the little piece of equipment always with me.
Today I shoot with a GX9, the same 12-35, a cheap 42,5 1.7 and a vintage zeiss plannar which is 100mm equivalent. I make A3 prints that look very nice to my eyes.
Cons is the small sensor, but man, I do not make a living of photography and I can live with some noise in my pics when I need to shoot at 6400, which doesn't happen often.
If you want to work with your camera, forget what you just read and buy a Sony for video or a Pentax for photography.
>>
>>4071124
>Pentax for photography.

If it's a troll, it's a good one.
>>
>>4071124
I still can't decide on a camera for my lightweight carry kit. E-M10 II, GX7, or something even smaller but loose the evf.
>>
>>4071134
Olys are cute, Pannys look low profile (which I dig) and have better ergonomics and menus. Whatever you choose, you can't go wrong if the gear has been taken care of. Also, I would get the same brand lenses. At this price point you are not breaking the bank. Just buy one and shoot some photos.
>>
>>4071129
Idk, anon. I had the chance to shoot a K-3 III for a week or so and I found it a sturdy SLR with everything a photographer needs at a relatively affordable price. I also liked the way it renders. Just test one, I am sure you can take some good snap with it.
>>
>>4071148
You didn't mention its viewfinder magnification is second only to the now discontinued top of the line Olympus Four Thirds DSLRs, 1.05x. Bright and big, a marvel of optics. Not even the D500 and the 7D II can touch it.
>>
>>4071150
I am not a pro, as said here...
>>4071124
... so I can't compare viewfinders because I didn't test many fancy cameras.
I guess my experience with Pentax was good because the friend that lend me the K-3 just explained me so well how he had setted all the buttons and that allowed me to be one with the machine.
I swear that, while shooting, I fantasized that, if I were a war photojournalist, I would carry that camera with me, but probably the anon who dislike these kindo of cameras earn money by shooting food pics for a hipster resataurant, so manly cameras are not his thing.
>>
How is m43 for black and white photography?
>>
>>4071056
Aps-c is mainly hated because of advances in FF
>>
>>4071056
People who hate on APSC don't even consider MFT to be real cameras
>>
>>4071100
fwiw, that was the debate for me. I ultimately decided that building editing presets and such was going to get me most of what I was looking for. bear in mind since it's mirrorless you can set some degree of color/lighting, highlights/shadows to what you see in the EVF, even if it won't be in the raw file
>>4071120

I shoot on an em5 mk3. an em5 mk2 is more or less the same thing and arguably has a tougher body. GX85 is a good choice too, I'd argue the 20mm Panasonic lens is also pretty good if you want the smallest/lightest thing
>>
>>4071148
Ok, that's fair. I'm in Europe and Pentax is a dead brand, only the Ricoh GR line still has some existence.

>>4071177
If you shoot raw : you can basically do everything. Do you want B&W in camera or in third-party applications, like Silver Efex?

>>4071100
Like >>4071248 said, if you have presets, the film simulations quickly lose its appeal.
>>
>>4071056
Mft gear is very cheap 2nd hand, as the resale value plummets compared to FF gear. It's also styled to appeal to boomers with no idea what they're doing.
It's a product of opportunity, for the ignorant and the poor.

crop factor is annoying to deal with when so much of the language around photography is in reference to 35 mm / full frame.
and its messing with economy of scale to produce so many slightly different sizes of lens

light is projected as a circle on to the sensor and if the sensor is smaller than the light circle, vignetting and aberration is not such a big problem.
in addition to this not much sensor area is needed for 4k video, and leaves a bit more room for in body stabilisation, if that's something your into.
there may also be other things like binning or tessellation in the process of sensor production but I dont know anything about that

I've found a few local listings on fbmarketplace and wanted you guy's input.
Lumix GF6 for about 65 euros and a Lumix GM1 for 140 euro.
I can't really decide as desu idk if what difference it will make. I never use flash. They both have a 16MP sensor, which I assume is the same exact sensor in both cameras.
I'm leaning toward the GF6 but is the difference that big?
I only shoot full frame currently, on sony. But the size of the camera is getting to me as I kinda wanna always have a camera with me.

Yeah, on the long end it's not so bad, but on the wide end those 2 extra stops of resolution are often really important.

I'm still holding onto my E-M1 mark II because full frame still doesn't have enough features and quality to justify the upgrade. Oly 12-40/2.8 is just so nice. Just yesterday my favorite shot idea was on the ground, portrait, using the articulating screen for great advantage. A feature that most full frame cameras simply lack.

Why can't Sony and Nikon make better (pro-sumer) cameras. Would think 4x bigger sensor would be an easy win.

>>4072163
Used Oly 17mm f/1.8 is what I would get if I didn't already have it. Or the new Panasonic Leica 9mm F/1.7 if you want wider. 25mm is not wide.

A stupid question to Oly users.

They say that when a retractable lens is locked, the camera refuses to take photos through it. But can it work in playback mode or does it just sit there and display the error text?

Also, is there any trick to turn it right into playback, like a point and shoot? I tried the usual combinations (hold play for 5 seconds, hold play while pressing the ON button) to no avail.

I've been looking into the smaller bodies recently and ended up with the gx7. My biggest complaints so far are lack of min. shutter speed setting in aperture mode (that's apparently fixed in g/gx9) and AF (compared to D7100). Pic related, it insisted on focusing on the grass behind the fence. If you do video, you'd probably want at least gx80/85 for ibis, or e-m10 II

Because it's convenient?

>>4080880
not really a question of price it is more like can I get something m4/3 super cheap that fixes some of the small issues i have with the gh1, otherwise I would rather spend a lot more and go with a whole new setup, probably full frame. Is the XH2 really m4/3 mount though? it certainly looks identical.
>>4080669
I really like the gx7 and 85 form factor and both are pretty cheap, but yeah a big issue for me on the gh1 is video autofocus, it is basically non existent. Also the gx series has no mic input so I would be screwed there too. Though that camera seems perfect for just taking photos. Maybe I will just try and find a used gh4.

The gh1 still fucks though, but my issues are bad video autofocus, no way of setting mic levels, disgusting noise patterns, and it doesn't like new sd cards. Also no more OEM batteries left. I have had this thing for over a decade and those are the only bad things I can say about it.

I currently own a Fujifilm x-e3 but I barely use it. It's a fairly small camera, but I would definitely use a camera that is more compact much more. I usually shoot film, but I'd love to have a digital to bring around with me. I'm not a professional and I'm not looking to blow images up, so is micro four thirds a good choice?
>>
>>4082405
There are many nice compact lenses in M43, so if it's an important criterion, that's an option to consider.
I only use little primes that fit in my backpack, and I carry them every day without back pain.
>>
>>4082405
If the X-e3 with something like the 27mm f2.8 is too large for you, you either go for a Ricoh GR or just stick with a cellphone. Even a Pen F isn't much smaller than an X-E3.

Ended picking up a SMC Takumar and I am loving it, but still if you have any rec for manual chinese glass (Since I am broke lol) I am glad to hear it.

I used the digital shutter for this one but I still like how it turned out.

The meme pinhole from Olympus is tempting me
Has anyone ITT used one?
>>
>>4083626
I want to but the new ones are overpriced. If you can snag one for cheap then its a fun toy lens imo.

What takumar? I have the 50mm 1.4 radioactive lens. Nice yellow tint :p

The digital shutters have 2 quirks
Rolling shutter, of which you give 0 fucks as your subject is static and banding.
To mitigate banding you match the shutter speed to the frequency of your mains or get a DC powered, actual DC, none of that PWM driven bullshit, light.

I don't think the picture quality is good enough. Just use normal lenses. Samyang 7.5mm f/3.5 fisheye is great and almost as small. If you want something small and pocketable, just use a phone.

Its fun, fuck the haters. You can find them for half retail price. I have both the 15mm and the 9mm one

Keep your imaginary boogeyman out of this.
>>

it's not a bogeyman, Fuji fanboys always pretend they enjoy the garbage they consoom because it's "fun".
That kind of cope is usually absent in MFT shooters.

wat. I just enjoy having random-ass lenses that I can dick around with.

Fujislugs would go on about how artistic and close to film it is or something.

It's OK, nothing to run home about but it gets the job done.
The adjustment rings are light, too light for the f ring, it's well hidden right at the base of the lens but I often find it slightly moved after taking the photo.
The other major thing, the f ring isn't indexed, it's a smooth rotation all the way from f1.8 to f16, you might like it or you might prefer having the wheel indexed to exact f values, that's up to the user.

Mine developed a slight pull, it needs to be held at f1.8, of it'll creep towards f2 on it's own. I changed mount of it often, though. I've a bunch of Meikes across mft and xmount, for these cheap ones, it's very easy changing mount. You just unscrew it and put on a different one.
