Let's put it this way- I'm happy to have a Canon Ql17 and eventually upgrade to a Leica. I don't feel like I'm missing out. However, if I had a Leica and saw someone with the Canonet, even though it is 1/10th the price, I'd still be so jealous. Pic related.

>>4048759I fell for it a decade ago with an M4-P, but got tired of film (had tons of dif film cameras, did lab work for years, etc) and sold that back in 2015ish. Considered them as super "fun" cameras, but 100% not worth the money.Came into a lot of money and rebought with a digital kit. Yeah, they're expensive as fuck, but if I lost everything (camera wise), it would be hard for me not to just get another Leica setup and leave it at that. I know lots of people with FF mirrorless setups that cost more in total. Granted, they have more bodies, lenses, functionality, and features, but I guess my priorities have changed. As a system it just "disappears" in use more-so than anything else I've used, and the IQ I can get with something so small is amazing. The lenses are much harder for me to justify cost-wise. They're well made but honestly overrated optically. They're great, for sure, just not that much greater than everything else, and in most cases, absolutely not worth the cost. Only thing really interesting me anymore is the 35 f1.4 FLE, but that would be purely to have a fast 35 smaller than my Voigt f1.2 III, not for it's optical qualities. A 28 lux would be awesome, but not at that price.>>4049421The Monochrom's are dope. You can use traditional B+W filters, and use it for trichromatic photography. The sharpness and detail definitely feels better than my 50R, even at low ISO, definitely reminds me of my Sigma DP3M (Foveon).Real talk though, I was in the market for a new M right around the M11 announcement, and I figured I could get an M10-M now, and pick up an M11 next year, and the M10-M would still be totally usable alongside the M11.

>>4052844>3 time more resolutionlol no. you only get more light with a monochrome sensor. Resolution is the same as a bayer/xtranny sensor.
>>4052848I'm not the guy you originally replied to. I just don't think you should be gatekeeping ownership of cameras. the only reason you'd care that someone buys a camera brand is if you're upset that they don't "deserve it" somehow, which is a bizarre way to think about how other people spend their money, which doesn't affect you at all. why do you even care? if he can afford it, let him buy it. it's not like your negative comment is going to inpsire him to become a better photographer, nor was that your goal.
>>4052803Real answer since I love shitting on Leica when I can. Great IQ at a tiny size, and great tactile experience of shooting, but they're really only worthwhile for specific type of shooting, and awful otherwise. If you love shooting with an OVF, manually focusing, and using primes from 28mm to 75mm, they're great. Your eyesight will really determine how well you can focus at f1.4 or faster, but f2 is pretty easy with most focal lengths. You can use them outside of that, but it's a lot less practical. At certain point you're better off using the optional EVF, at which point a standard mirrorless makes a lot more sense. If the OVF is the main draw, I honestly find my X-Pro3 better in that regard.Leica service & repair sucks, equally expensive and can often take 4-6 months. It sucks not having a tilting screen for low angle / hip shots. It sucks not having autofocus for just getting quick snaps, and shooting one handed without having to rely on zone focusing (or focusing by moving). The M11 fixed it, but having to remove the baseplate for memory card & battery was obnoxious af.Cost-wise they're expensive as fuck for cameras, but honestly not that bad compared to many other hobbies / expenses. That said, I have friends with cycling setups that cost more, friends with more invested in all kinds of different hobbies. I'm fortunate to have a lot of money (now), but I still live frugally. I've driven the same car for 12 years, that I bought used (and 5 years old) for $7k cash, when most of my friends drive newer +$30k vehicles. I know several "uncle bobs" with multiple a7's and a complete kit of f2.8 zooms and f1.4 primes that costs more in total than my Leica setup. It really comes down to priorities, and even then they're still a bad option thinking in terms of performance per dollar. You're absolutely paying more, for less, but you might "like it" more. Most people wouldn't though.
>>4052855you know nothing about me. I have two film leicas and I enjoy shooting them a lot. I don't own any digital leicas because I can't afford them. but I'm not so petty that I go around shitting on people who want to buy them. it's just a product, man, it doesn't matter who buys it or for what reason. they make plenty of them. him buying one isn't affecting you at all. so yeah I'm defending it because your criticism is stupid.
>>4052860You should try not caring what people spend their money on, you'd probably be happier.>gatekeeping camerasYou are a sad, thirst-driven shell of a human being. Fucking pathetic.
>>4052788I have a later Kiev. Great camera, if yours doesn't have it yet find a cheap Helios-103 53mm f1.8, one of the sharpest Soviet lenses ever made. They were sold with later model Kievs, mine is a 1978 model I did a full CLA and replaced all of the leatherette on.The Jupiter lenses made for these Kievs are also much cheaper than their LTM counterparts.Geroyam slava druzhe!
>>4052847Bayer arrays, organised so that you have pixels of red, green, a second green, and blue in 2x2 arrays. The de-mosaicing algorithm in the raw converter interpolates adjacent blocks to present you with 4 RGB values, but your actual RGB sensor resolution is really 1/4 of the overall number of megapixels for the sensor. In the case of the monochrome sensors, each 2x2 array can actually produce 4 discrete monochrome pixels, with no need for de-mosaicing or interpolation. So you have the potential for sharper images because there is no interpolation taking place.

>>4053202That Helios has trouble mounting on some of the older Kievs though I believe the III is safe. Great lens, thanks. The later models did suffer from the dreadful Breznev 5 year plans but they can still be fixed up and most of the black ones have been serviced afterward since they were never offered as a black body from the factory. >>4054694Yep, I was eyeing XPro3 for some time for this very reason but lack of "real" rangefinder and supposed lag using maual focusing (according to Chef of Gear and Sneed mr. Rockwell at least) made me a bit hesitant. Also couldn't really find use for it yet. The only viable idea for screen-less camera that I can think of would be one that uses phone or ipad as its replacement - I could belive that it has been considered by some design teams at some point and decided against for obvious reasons.Another a bit strange question - could one use Visoflex on digital Leica? (I know it is practically pointless with rear screen)
>>4055473M6 for classic, M7 for modern. I vote M4-P.>>4055585Yeah it's not a great experience to MF with AF lenses, but you can totally use MF lenses with it, and there are even some advantages over a traditional M, but it's a lot slower / less "effortless" than an M in practice. If you like OVF and don't mind using AF, it's an excellent alternative, and that's kind of how I treat mine now (gave up on using MF lenses with it), like an M with autofocus. For me, the OVF is the real draw, not just RF focusing.>The only viable idea for screen-less camera that I can think of would be one that uses phone or ipad as its replacementThe M10-D at least works with the 2 most recent digital visoflex's, but kinda defeats the purpose. Sony put out some crazy lens cameras years ago that you'd attach to your phone, but they sold terribly.>could one use Visoflex on digital Leica? As far as I know the old visoflex's still work with new digtal M's.I just grabbed a leather case that covers the LCD (and flips down like X-Pro3) for my M to get the M-D "experience". The only thing I need the menu for is formatting, changing lens registration for uncoded lenses, and initial setup of the "M" and Auto-ISO settings.
>>4055592This camera was shit, but I wish they kept trying. Cameras are ded, but plenty of people still but phones. Why didn't Sony make a phone with a flippy screen yet?
>>4049519Leica had a train that transported Jews from camps to safer areas
Quick question. I've always heard rangefinders had some advantages over slrs/dslrs for street photography - namely size, discreteness, etc.But with the way modern mirrorless camera are developing are there still any advantages rangefinders offer over mirrorless?
>>4055837An OVF with framelines lets you see things outside the frame, has no blackout when taking pictures, and will show everything in focus at all times. Most everything else is better with a standard mirrorless for street, and there are downsides that rangefinders have that you don't have to deal with too.X-Pro/X100 are the hybrids that kind of get you the best of both worlds.
>>4055849>An OVF with framelines lets you see things outside the frame, has no blackout when taking pictures, and will show everything in focus at all times. You can achieve the same thing with both eye open viewfinder shooting with an EVF or SLR OVF
>>4052841Damn dude you're obsessed with your coworker. Pull his dick out your ass. Seems like he followed what he was passionate about; decided it wasn't for him and found another passion to try. While you're still here malding over him. At least he still tried, what have you done besides still be bitter months/a year later that he went for a camera he liked that you thought he didn't deserve? You're definitely bothered by the fact that he has a "precision instrument" just like you, and you don't think he earned it. He's got the same right to the instrument as you lmao. He probably gave his hobby a fairer shot at success than you and it's evident you're mad. You've got several Leicas and still a nophoto that's still parading a vaguely disguised failed gatekeep as something based on some pretend nobler point you claim we don't understand-- no, we see it clearly and we see what you're trying to cover up with but we're dismissing it as a thinly veiled and weak point. Unfortunately for you, his decision to buy a Leica is just as valid as yours. You seem to be stuck on this guy you've mentioned multiple times so it seems you might be his number one fan.

>>4055966Pretty much all of the M-D's are rare af now. That's the route I went with my M10 and it legit killed all desire for an M-D model. A lot less clunky than having to use my phone to change camera settings as needed.
i don't know why anyone would do this. they're selling it below its local market rate, probably because it looks stupid as hell. i would buy with the intention of restoring it to non-retarded. how hard would it be to peel this shit off? does it need new vulcanite, or is the original vulcanite somewhere under the skin?[EXIF data available. Voigtlander or Zeiss?
Or 7 Artisans?
>>4052841can you send me this guys number I want to be a gay beekeeper
>>4058083Zeiss ZF = Voigtlander lenses for M-mount > Voigtlander for other mounts > 7Artisans/TittyArtisans > Zeiss Milvus & Otus series
>>4058083Zeiss is good, but I prefer the Voigtlander alternative at most focal lengths.50 f2 Planar, I'd rather have the smaller 50 f1.5 Nokton, or better 50 f2 APO.I would take the new Ultron's (28 & 35) over Biogons.35 f1.4 Distagon, even bigger than the 35 f1.2 III.50 f1.5 Sonnar, definitely prefer the Nokton.I have the TTArtisan 50 f1.4, excellent build, excellent optics for the price, but I never could get it perfectly calibrated with my M, and grabbed a smaller / lighter fast 50 instead.
>>4058097Isn't Otus the flagship line for Zeiss? They are so sharp I'm surprised Zeiss didn't invent nanocontrast to describe them.
Are there any 7/titty artisan lenses that actually have an accurate focusing distance scale? Nightmare mode: hyperfocal scale also working.
>>4058277>Isn't Otus the flagship line for Zeiss? They are and they have no more contrast than the ZF line, they are just way sharper. Not worth the money at all, it's for film shooters who don't want to post-process the scans as the lens produces all the tricks they want.Imagine a Sigma Art with Zeiss rendition, sounds great but in reality the depth of field looks flat, the transitions are cut throat, the great corners make the image lack that center sweetspot, it's overcorrected: the lens line. Plus you can buy 4 or 5 top lenses with one Otus.
>>4058277snoy 135mm f/1.8 is the sharpest lens for roughly <100MP FF (lp/mm doesn't convert to MP too well)https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2019/03/sony-fe-135mm-f1-8-gm-early-mtf-results/For theoretical/scientific purposes (estimated 100MP+ for FF), the smegma 135 is betterhttps://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2019/10/more-ultra-high-resolution-mtf-experiments/
>>4058292>lp/mm doesn't convert to MP too wellWeird, why not? Let's give the line 4 pixels to make room for bayer smudges and relevant mtfs will be like 240 px/mm or 50MP on smol format.

>>4058295because im too lazy to do the math
Is a Leica M3 still a good buy? I see a lot of people preferring the M4 for a film Leica, but I'm not clear on why.
question about the m240 specifically. I really enjoy shooting Fujifilm black and white jpegs and using shadows +2 or +4. is there an equivalence with the Leica system? or do I need to use the raw and increase shadows in post
>>4048794Goddamn that is aesthetic as fuck. I'd buy that just to display as an art piece
>>4060093it seems1. the answer to this is no2. the jpegs would be pretty damn flat so you would want the DNGlame
>>4048759Dude, I have fallen into Leica meme hard. I am a semi pro photographer and I am thinking of quiting doing paid work since I am graduating from uni. I am thinking of selling all my gear and getting a film and digital Leica. I prolly get the digital 1st so I learn how to use a rangefinder easier, since I have never used one. After that I can get a film Leica.
>>4060164if you're okay with film and you want to play with a rangefinder just start with a canon p instead of a goddamn leica
>>4060171I shoot film already. I have a Minolta Hi-Matic f, I have never shot a roll on it tho.
>>4060201looks like a really fun camera. i had a yashica electro and it took incredible photos for something that cost me $100 and seemingly weighed almost nothing
im giving some serious considering into picking up an m9 with a replaced sensor
>>4060495Me too. Everyone says that like every shot they take with the m9 looks amazing. Only full frame ccd sensor in existence. They’re like 2500-3k though. You can get a z7ii for that money.
>m11 monochrome confirmed for this year
>>4048759Nothing wrong with Leica, the problem is the rangefinder meme. Still leagues above the fake rangefinder offerings from Fuji though.Good enough for Leni, good enough for me!
>>4062362>You can get a z7iisorry i stopped reading here can you repeat what you said with any of this thank you>every shot they take with the m9 looks amazing. Only full frame ccd sensor in existenceits possible (as ive been reading via mr leica) that the main reason folks dig the jpegs from the ccd is because it has less dynamic range, and therefore more apparent contrast in the images. the fuji jpegs look incredible too, especially when you crank the shadows/hilights settings to obliterate all the tones in the middle... the solution to this if you had an m240 would probably be to shoot raw and crank the shadows in post. given the issues it has with blowing hightlights you would probably be shooting -2 under exposed raw anyway. i don't own a leica body this is just my figuring after a week of watching idiot youtube.
>>4062533Lol dude let’s be real here Leicas are cameras for vacation snapshots for rich people. Anyway I still want one cause of that sensor and I mostly take pics of the senpai. The one thing that kind of makes me hesitant is that I have a toddler who runs around and it’s impossible to get her in focus on my bessa r2, that’s what the f6 is for. Def not a camera for action shots. It’s also not a camera for landscapes. Maybe portraits? And “street photography” but that’s for losers with no friends lol. Think about it how are you going to take any landscape photos with a filter while using a rangefinder when you can just see the result immediately in a mirrorless or through the lens of an slr. It’s just an unnecessary handicap.
>>4062847>And “street photography” but that’s for losers with no friends lol.don't insult me, ok. damn. FUCK. i mean, yea basically. i travel a lot. i love shooting my bessa r3 and it's the experience that i want to replicate to digital.

i am extremely tempted to pick up a monochrom type 246 as my first (only) digital m body. i never shoot color film. i shoot older leica glass which looks like shit in color (don't argue, faggot), and all of my personal work is in black and white. im just not interested in color. i just have a hard time justifying it in my head: paying like 1k extra to not be able to shoot color through any of my m mount lenses. the side-by-side photo comparisons between the monochrom and m240 bodies don't show any difference that i can see. but im still compelled by the black and white camera. like, bad ass man. cool. i need it? option b would be to get an m-p240 or an m240. it would be more sensible, i guess. i could emulate a red filter in post as you have color data in the raw, but i don't really care about that. the camera is less interesting to me or something. what should i do here? i need someone to tell me what i like and don't like at all times because i never had a dad growing up. thanks in advance.
