I 100% agree that Leica's viewfinders are miles ahead of the Canonet, but the viewfinder on the canon is not exactly bad. I also like the film loading mechanism on the Leica which does a great job of reducing light leaks, but the QL17 has the namesake quickloading feature which is more practical. Overall, the Canonet is sleeker camera that is more normie friendly than the Leica and is not as absurdly expensive.

I fell for it a decade ago with an M4-P, but got tired of film (had tons of dif film cameras, did lab work for years, etc) and sold that back in 2015ish. Considered them as super "fun" cameras, but 100% not worth the money.

Came into a lot of money and rebought with a digital kit. Yeah, they're expensive as fuck, but if I lost everything (camera wise), it would be hard for me not to just get another Leica setup and leave it at that. I know lots of people with FF mirrorless setups that cost more in total. Granted, they have more bodies, lenses, functionality, and features, but I guess my priorities have changed. As a system it just "disappears" in use more-so than anything else I've used, and the IQ I can get with something so small is amazing.

The lenses are much harder for me to justify cost-wise. They're well made but honestly overrated optically. They're great, for sure, just not that much greater than everything else, and in most cases, absolutely not worth the cost. Only thing really interesting me anymore is the 35 f1.4 FLE, but that would be purely to have a fast 35 smaller than my Voigt f1.2 III, not for it's optical qualities. A 28 lux would be awesome, but not at that price.

Had a black dial S2 for a few years, super regret selling it. Had a little crack in the window, but only $100 at the time (2010ish).
Got really good at shooting both eyes open thanks to the 100% viewfinder.
It solved one of my biggest annoyances with Leica too, that I could focus and shoot 1-handed.

Nah focus was fine. Maybe a tad off, but I'll take it for f1.2 on a rangefinder. The lens does vignette a lot, but I like it. Definitely not apples to apples as the aperture is way different. Just thought it was a neat example for each system.

Best in class (FF) DR at higher ISO, best high ISO noise. You can use traditional B+W filters, and use it for trichromatic photography. The sharpness and detail definitely feels better than my 50R, even at low ISO, definitely reminds me of my Sigma DP3M (Foveon).
Real talk though, I was in the market for a new M right around the M11 announcement, and I figured I could get an M10-M now, and pick up an M11 next year, and the M10-M would still be totally usable alongside the M11.

I find my zorki 4k to be pretty wonky, not a bad camera and the photos are good, but it just doesn't transpire solidity and quality. I just got myself on a Kiev/Contax, and it's on a whole other level, although it's 20 years older than the zorki. Have yet to see what it looks like on film.

Real answer since I love shitting on Leica when I can. Great IQ at a tiny size, and great tactile experience of shooting, but they're really only worthwhile for specific type of shooting, and awful otherwise.
If you love shooting with an OVF, manually focusing, and using primes from 28mm to 75mm, they're great. Your eyesight will really determine how well you can focus at f1.4 or faster, but f2 is pretty easy with most focal lengths.
You can use them outside of that, but it's a lot less practical. At certain point you're better off using the optional EVF, at which point a standard mirrorless makes a lot more sense. If the OVF is the main draw, I honestly find my X-Pro3 better in that regard.
Leica service & repair sucks, equally expensive and can often take 4-6 months.
It sucks not having a tilting screen for low angle / hip shots.
It sucks not having autofocus for just getting quick snaps, and shooting one handed without having to rely on zone focusing (or focusing by moving).
The M11 fixed it, but having to remove the baseplate for memory card & battery was obnoxious af.

Cost-wise they're expensive as fuck for cameras, but honestly not that bad compared to many other hobbies / expenses. That said, I have friends with cycling setups that cost more, friends with more invested in all kinds of different hobbies. I'm fortunate to have a lot of money (now), but I still live frugally. I've driven the same car for 12 years, that I bought used (and 5 years old) for $7k cash, when most of my friends drive newer +$30k vehicles. I know several "uncle bobs" with multiple a7's and a complete kit of f2.8 zooms and f1.4 primes that costs more in total than my Leica setup. It really comes down to priorities, and even then they're still a bad option thinking in terms of performance per dollar. You're absolutely paying more, for less, but you might "like it" more. Most people wouldn't though.

I have a later Kiev. Great camera, if yours doesn't have it yet find a cheap Helios-103 53mm f1.8, one of the sharpest Soviet lenses ever made. They were sold with later model Kievs, mine is a 1978 model I did a full CLA and replaced all of the leatherette on.

The Jupiter lenses made for these Kievs are also much cheaper than their LTM counterparts.

The later models did suffer from the dreadful Breznev 5 year plans but they can still be fixed up and most of the black ones have been serviced afterward since they were never offered as a black body from the factory. Fedka did service on them and sold a few serviced models as black bodies.

Is there any possibility of something like Epson Rd-1 (manual shutter cocking, no backscreen) beeing made again? I don't know much about digital photography but the need to navigate on-screen menus to make camera work as I want it to and hand-holding autofocus (or assisted focus) really put me off this one time I had to use 2010-ish Sony Alpha.
I really would love to see more mirroless rf and any Nikon f4-like dslr (no screens, knobs and buttons only) on the market.
Inb4 I am not senile - late millenial/early zoomie if this matter. Just don't like em screens and touch-stuff.

Yep, I was eyeing XPro3 for some time for this very reason but lack of "real" rangefinder and supposed lag using maual focusing (according to Chef of Gear and Sneed mr. Rockwell at least) made me a bit hesitant. Also couldn't really find use for it yet.
The only viable idea for screen-less camera that I can think of would be one that uses phone or ipad as its replacement - I could belive that it has been considered by some design teams at some point and decided against for obvious reasons.

Yeah it's not a great experience to MF with AF lenses, but you can totally use MF lenses with it, and there are even some advantages over a traditional M, but it's a lot slower / less "effortless" than an M in practice. If you like OVF and don't mind using AF, it's an excellent alternative, and that's kind of how I treat mine now (gave up on using MF lenses with it), like an M with autofocus. For me, the OVF is the real draw, not just RF focusing.

The M10-D at least works with the 2 most recent digital visoflex's, but kinda defeats the purpose. Sony put out some crazy lens cameras years ago that you'd attach to your phone, but they sold terribly.

As far as I know the old visoflex's still work with new digtal M's.
I just grabbed a leather case that covers the LCD (and flips down like X-Pro3) for my M to get the M-D "experience". The only thing I need the menu for is formatting, changing lens registration for uncoded lenses, and initial setup of the "M" and Auto-ISO settings.

Quick question. I've always heard rangefinders had some advantages over slrs/dslrs for street photography - namely size, discreteness, etc.

But with the way modern mirrorless camera are developing are there still any advantages rangefinders offer over mirrorless?

An OVF with framelines lets you see things outside the frame, has no blackout when taking pictures, and will show everything in focus at all times.
Most everything else is better with a standard mirrorless for street, and there are downsides that rangefinders have that you don't have to deal with too.
X-Pro/X100 are the hybrids that kind of get you the best of both worlds.

I would take the new Ultron's (28 & 35) over Biogons.

They are and they have no more contrast than the ZF line, they are just way sharper. Not worth the money at all, it's for film shooters who don't want to post-process the scans as the lens produces all the tricks they want.
Imagine a Sigma Art with Zeiss rendition, sounds great but in reality the depth of field looks flat, the transitions are cut throat, the great corners make the image lack that center sweetspot, it's overcorrected: the lens line. Plus you can buy 4 or 5 top lenses with one Otus.

its possible (as ive been reading via mr leica) that the main reason folks dig the jpegs from the ccd is because it has less dynamic range, and therefore more apparent contrast in the images. the fuji jpegs look incredible too, especially when you crank the shadows/hilights settings to obliterate all the tones in the middle... the solution to this if you had an m240 would probably be to shoot raw and crank the shadows in post. given the issues it has with blowing hightlights you would probably be shooting -2 under exposed raw anyway. i don't own a leica body this is just my figuring after a week of watching idiot youtube.

i am extremely tempted to pick up a monochrom type 246 as my first (only) digital m body.

i never shoot color film. i shoot older leica glass which looks like shit in color (don't argue, faggot), and all of my personal work is in black and white. im just not interested in color. i just have a hard time justifying it in my head: paying like 1k extra to not be able to shoot color through any of my m mount lenses. the side-by-side photo comparisons between the monochrom and m240 bodies don't show any difference that i can see. but im still compelled by the black and white camera. like, bad ass man. cool. i need it?

option b would be to get an m-p240 or an m240. it would be more sensible, i guess. i could emulate a red filter in post as you have color data in the raw, but i don't really care about that. the camera is less interesting to me or something.
