Should I buy this for hobby use?

It seems objectively good for something 5 years old and I can get it at a good price. Pictures use only not video. 0 interest in mirrorless.
>>
>>4030080
Short answer: yes.
Long answer: y-yes. It is an entry level body but amongst all the entry levels it is the most feature packed. Lenses are plenty, some are cheap and good like the DA 35/2.4 and 50/1.8, the "premium" kit lens is the 18-135 that is a usable travel zoom but I would rather go with the regular kit lens. Maybe upgrade it to the DA 16-45 if on budget or the newer DA 16-85 WR which is weather sealed. The DA 55-300 is an excellent telephoto on a budget although AF is slow on the older models, PLM is quicker.
There were problems with the earlier models, K-30, K-50, K-S2 where the aperture block had quality problems, seems to be fixed by the K-70.

For hobby you can't go wrong with it. Keep an eye out for the Limited primes, brah.
>>

Only if all youre interested in is photography. It's great value for money as a stills shooter. But the Nikon Z50 isnt that much more. Its 850 for the pentax and the kit lens and it's 1200 for the Nikon and the kit lens and the little budget tele it comes with.

With that said. The future is video, much to this boards seething. Pentax is going to go bust not accepting this and not embracing mirrorless. Video is going to become more central and photography is going to be a side feature, even for professionals. The GH6 and OM1 are working class icons now and theyre full on hybrids. Every digital camera in the future is going to be what hybrids are now. Video is everything now, specially when it comes to wildlife.

It's an awesome camera OP. I owned it's older brother the K50 (well, still do) and used the shit out of it for about 5 years until I upgraded.

Absolutely underrated camera and it can take anything. Only Pentax has full weather sealing in entry level cameras, plus a good drop rating, plus the only brand rated for sub-freezing operation.

I've had mine literally in pouring rain and mud, and snow. It's survived crazy campouts, hiking trips, and drunken shenanigans.

I almost got the K70 when I upgraded but opted for the newer and slightly more advanced KP which is also the bees tits

Gracias amigos. General consensus is this unit punches above its weight and price point. Have seen some reviews about aperture solenoid though which is the only worry

I had my aperture solenoid freeze up on my K50 and it was super easy to fix (followed a youtube tute) and it never happened again.

I read that this design flaw was corrected for K70 but in any case, if it did happen to you you could fix it no problem if you have just a mild /diy/ inclination, but if not you know it can be fixed easily at the shop

pic unrelated, my beloved KP
>>
>>4030086
I can get it with standard kit 18-135mm or with a Sigma f2.8 18-50mm.

What do?

if the 18-135 is the WR then that one's weather sealed like the camera itself. For me that would be a deal maker and I'd take the 18-135, but if the weather sealing isn't important to you at all but the aperture is then the Sigma's a good option

I'd probably still go with the kit lens for the extra zoom as well though

The one it comes with is good enough, is more suited to what the camera is built for and it's more versatile. Pick up the plastic tastic nifty fifty f1.8 with it if you need to shoot in super low light ever and for portraits and stuff. It's like $115. That's what, $965 all up.

Have fun with your new camera OP. I started out on a pentax. She will treat you well. Come back and post pictures sometime.
>>
>>4030116
The aperture block problem was fixed, you just had to send it in for service. Pentax even kept it up for a couple years where the service was free (plus shipping) after that it was half price.
Unlike Nikon where they find a crippling problem they require you to buy a new camera, no discount. Same for Sony but they hide the fact with their rapid release schedule.
>>
>>4030153
I have the 35/2.4, crazy sharp, especially for a £80 piece.
Recently replaced by the 43/1.9 but it wasn't as cheap.
>>
>>4030122
>I read that this design flaw was corrected for K70
I read somewhere it had the same flaw. But I got a K-1, so Whatever!
>>
>>4031040
hmm I was under the pression that it was only a problem with the K30 and K50 but idunno.

But I got a KP, so Whatever! :3
>>
>>4031108
>>4031040
It was a problem with a couple batches of aperture blocks used in K-30 and K-50, some even made it to K-S2, mainly out of tolerance problems. Not every camera is affected.
Supplier was sloppy and as soon as Ricoh got word of it they revised their supply chain and used a different supplier. Mind you this started in the later Hoya days and as we know Hoya was not very kind to Pentax and generally didn't care about the camera business. Ricoh did much better with the replacement program.
The whole issue got out and was solved during the K-S2 line, K-70 came afterwards. Also K-70 is KAF-4 mount so it can use the new lenses without the mechanical aperture connection.
>>
>>4031108
Are you OP? Nice one anyways, you basically got a revised K-3, great camera.

Also I think it's fair to include the Ricoh cameras in with Pentax and they have great compacts, rugged/adventure cams, and pretty much the best reasonable 360º cams on the market

Pentax is probably the most retarded brand in existence. Almost all of their cameras are APS-C and yet they have a laughable lineup of lenses made for APS-C.

nægrœ you must be shrooming. they have piles of lenses to choose from and any FF lens works on APS-C, not to mention all the Sigma and Rokinon etc options, like for your precious 135mm prime.

plus they have 2-3 35/50mm primes including for APS-C

not retarded, streamlined

There are only those faggy limited edition lenses which have those strange ass focal lenghths like 31mm or 15mm like wtf

It is here now. My thoughts:
heavy, but good. It feels solid and well built
takes great pix
menu is easy to navigate
battery life could be better
the eyecup is small and I keep pressing nose on the screen when using the OVF, which is getting annoying
Pentax being a smaller brand aftermarket support is lacking. Sigma seems to have stopped making lenses with Pentax mounts, which is a shame.
>>
>>4034489
She'll be great m8. Like I said earlier take the time to go through the manual once and really get a handle on everything it does, just so you don't miss anything useful or shortcuts and whatnot.

She's a lovely camera goddammit!
>>
>>4034489
Losing Sigma support is not a big deal, their lenses always sucked and if you wanted the good stuff you had to pay as much as first party (Pentax) Limiteds or Star lenses. I had the misfortune to use Sigma for a while, when I switched over to DA* 300 and DA* 16-50 it made a big difference.
I don't miss Sigma and neither should you. Also All Sigma lenses have a kind of rubbery coating that turns into sticky tar in a couple years. Why they keep doing that boggles my mind.

Is this the Pentax general?

Here's some of the pics I've taken recently (this May). I used Super-Takumar 50/1.4 for 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 10 and SMC Pentax-F35-80 for 4, 5, 7, 8. The fake film strip was added just for fun

>the eyecup is small and I keep pressing nose on the screen when using the OVF
O-ME53. It is a 1.2x magnifying eyecup but instead of being a shitty chinese one with aberrations galore it is a first party Pentax product with clean image. I use it for both my K-3 and my K-1.
>>
Need some help please. I want to take full body shots on my k70 with a blurred background effect. What lens should I get? I am looking at DA 50-135mm f2.8 or DA 70mm prime f2.8. anything else?

I have not done this style of shooting before but have read an 85mm fast aperture is best for full body with blurred background but there is no such lens in the pentax apsc range. Using my 50mm f1.8 but it works best for headshots. Full body is what I need it for. Thanks lads
>>
>>4036809
The DA 50-135 has a known problem with the SDM, and if you're patient, you can find one for cheap and convert it to screw drive. I paid $99 for mine.
>>
>>4036809
I would consider using the fifty mil with the Brenizer technique, no?
>>
>>4036809
DA 50/1.8 if on budget
DA* 55/1.4 if less on a budget
D-FA* 50/1.4 if money doesn't matter
