It's not like I am utterly puzzled, I was just curious because the DOF struck me as relatively deep (or at least very well-aligned) and then the answer perplexed me

I mostly shoot my stuff between f/8 and f/16, and even accounting for the bigger sensor size, I wouldn't expect my DOF to be drastically smaller at these apartures than an MTF one at f/2.8
But its probably the flower size and shooting distance, as you point out here >>4036664

Smaller apertures would also help. They would allow you to get a deeper DoF without cropping (and I wouldn't crop to excessively, often more environment is more interesting)

To add, find out the ISO invariance stages of your sensor; I have an a6300 and it's ISO-invariant between ISO100 and 400, so I don't gain anything being on 100 and struggling with a lower shutter speed to get light when I could just turn up the ISO to 400 and have a properly exposed photo without any loss of quality (AND with a more usable shutter speed) compared to having a dark ISO100 image that I have to brighten in post.

I'll try experimenting with ISO's above 100 and hopefully I'll be able to get away with using less power on my speedlight. I bought a smaller one and the light hits my subject more intensely than my old one even with the light being diffused.

ISO invariance is about noise, not DR. There's no noise difference if you take a photo at low ISO but have to push it in post or simply turn up the ISO from the beginning if the sensor is invariant.
I was wrong though, the 6300's sensor is (basically, not 100% but close enough) invariant between 100 and 320, and then again between 400 and 6400.

anons I said from the beginning that I'm using a Sony a6300, an outdated aps-c mirrorless, and I was talking to the guy with the a6500.
Pic rel, source on the ISO invariance stages, from https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/57462845 and while it's not 100% invariant (like the graph also shows) my own usage so far tells me it's close enough. From ISO400 to 6400 is only 4 stops, those aren't huge jumps in ISO?

yeah, that's another way to see it, it does suck but desu in real world use it matters very little to me, all this means is that I don't need to stress about ISO below 320 and between 400 and 6400, I can just shoot and turn up the ISO if it helps me see and therefore use a faster shutter speed, or I can shoot with too-low of an ISO without it mattering as brightening it in post will get the exact same result.
For me this greatly streamlined shooting as ISO basically doesn't matter within those constraints so it's all good from my POV

Seeing that both the a6500 and a6300 uses the same sensor, we should have similar ISO invariances.

It's great to know that there's little to no differences in noise between 400-6400 because I always never go past 3200. I thought every incremental increase in ISO equaled to more noise. I'll definitely use ISO in the future more when necessary.
