Looking at buying this camera, but it's fully manual. I'm not used to shooting in full manual without being able to see exactly how the exposure will turn out on my camera screen. How can I quickly the rules of shooting manual on film in order to avoid ruining entire rolls of expensive film? Or does Fuji make any medium format cameras that have auto exposure with prices that haven't skyrocketed due to zoomer popularity?[EXIF data available. >>4028270Why are you buying a $1000 medium format rangefinder if you don't know what you're doing?
>>4028257>>4028270If you're buying an expensive manual camera that shoots expensive film, you should have a good lightmeter. You can find a decent one for 50 bucks on ebay. Serious medium format shooters might spend 200 dollars or more on a light meter. It might also be helpful to learn the sunny 16 rule:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunny_16_rule

>>4028257Just meter using your digital camera. Alternatively, you might want to get something with greater film economy as you will burn through frames with the 690.
>>4028257You're going to waste film and you're going to take shit photos. There's no get rich quick scheme that will make you suddenly good enough that you literally never have a bad roll of film, starting out. My general sentiment is the same as >>4028444 , this seems like a stupid purchase if you've never even shot manual before. Why don't you buy a shitbox 35mm camera and practice shooting manual before you dump all this money into something you don't know how to use
>>4028444How will I ever know what I'm doing if I never try it out? I want to branch out and learn to use new types of cameras. >>4028445Thanks anon. Gonna look into some dedicated light meters. I'm seeing some that can be attached to the hotshoes like >>4028458 and they seem to work fairly well. >>4028453I have no issue with only 8 shots to a roll. I have my own scanner so I only have to pay for development. >>4028473I like to think I know the Sunny16 rule fairly well but I'd rather trust a computer to figure out the exposure over my brain. >>4028824I know how to shoot fully manual, I'm just not used to it when even my film camera has an aperture/shutter priority mode that makes life easier for myself. I'm buying this camera to get out of my comfort zone and learn to use a fully manual camera that just so happens to be a range-finder and medium format.
>>4028691Wow is this the power of 6x9?
>>4028875I used a VCII meter for a while, and if buying a new meter today (in your case), I would just get TTartisan meter. These are both simple, compact, and you just leave it on the camera. There are definitely better meters out there, but I don't think they'd be worth it for you unless working with lighting / in studio.Prior to the VCII, I just used a phone app to meter, and it worked fairly well. That was back in like 2011-12 so I'd imagine the modern metering apps are that much better. You could just start there too.
>>4028882Thanks anon. The TTartisan one looks to be the cheapest out of all the ones I've found so far. Some seem really expensive but if all do fairly well overall then I'll just go for the cheaper ones. https://hedeco.myshopify.com/products/lime-onehttps://www.doomomade.com/https://www.reveni-labs.com/shop/p/lightmeter
>>4028876That is the power of shitty flatbed scan.
Maybe use a fully manual 35mm SLR first and learn how to use it before buying that expensive fuji anon. I recommend an M42 mount like a pentax spotmatic, a zenit e, a praktica, or something of the sort. It doesn't matter. Then shoot kodak gold and hp5 until your shots are well exposed and in focus.

Literally just use any light meter. The first camera I ever owned was a Zenit-E. A soviet SLR from 1965. It has a built-in light meter, but not the way you'd expect from other, non-autistic SLRs. It had a selenium cell above the lens, so absolutely no point-metering. The more light that hit the cell, the more voltage the cell produced. This voltage moved a single needle on the top side of the camera, which you had to align this (pic relates) exposure dial with, then align the inner ring with your ISO, then read off of it. The inner dial indicates your aperture selection, and the outer your shutter speeds. If one is vertically aligned with another, those settings will result in a perfectly exposed photo. That's it. This is as simple as it gets. I never shot a manual before this, I had no idea what I was doing. Despite this, ny entire first roll came out perfectly exposed (and I'm an idiot).Just use any light meter.
>>4028257Just buy a Mamiya 6/7 if you want a built in meter so bad.
>>4030289What if you dont want to sell your soul for it?
>>4030297Then you can buy the inferior substitute product, pretend that your soul is worth 5k, and use zoomers as a coping mechanism for why you can’t help yourself.
>>4029128Why tho? You can always go back and rescan it with better equipment. No one needs high res scans for posting online.
>>4030279Bought this light meter so I can just keep it on top my camera and it can read the right exposure for me constantly. I'm gonna be very slow with this camera so I'll probably never have to quickly know the exposure of a scene to get a quick shot but it gives me the convenience of not having to whip out my phone or a handheld lightmeter every time. >>4030289Yeah look I'm not spending $4,000-7,000 on a film camera. Light meters are retarded, you've got an electronic viewfinder that can give you perfect settings and an exposure preview in your pocket already.
>>4030574I've never seen a light meter like this before, looks really interesting. Right now I have two cameras, both of them have a built-in light meter so I don'r really need it though
>>4028257Anon you're a literal shitter, go practice on a holga first
The GW690 arrived today and I shot my first roll of medium-format film with Portra 800. It absolutely mogs my A-1 but it's still comfortable to hold and carry around. It was far easier to use than I had anticipated and hopefully my first roll will come back properly exposed assuming my phone gave me the correct information. Only worry is that it was getting dark early and I found myself shooting at f/3.5 and f/4 even outdoors so I'm hoping I didn't butcher the focusing which is probably the hardest part of using this camera. My next roll will be Kodak Gold 200, and the day I'm going out to shoot is supposed to be really sunny so hopefully I can stay above f/8[EXIF data available. First roll came back, finally. And yeah look I absolutely fucked it. Not even worth trying to scan these myself at home let alone post them anywhere.I knew as I was taking the photos at 1/30 shutter speed that it'd be fucked yet for the past 7 days I've had this false sense of hope that it wouldn't be that bad, but it was. But I've shot 4 more rolls and waiting on those so hopefully they come out better as I made sure to keep above 1/125 on almost every shot. At least the exposure is alright.[EXIF data available.
