I’ve always loved photography. There’s so many thrills I get from it. My job involves flying in helicopters, so sitting in the door with my feet hanging out with my camera around my neck is just an awesome feeling. I do everything from wildlife, street to party events. I’ve experienced joy, excitement, fulfillment, and many other feelings from just using my camera. What happens to the pictures after I take them is much less important to me than the experience of taking them.

Switched from portrait hobbyist to real estate photographer and went from making $1,200 (from retail job + sometimes $0 from photography) a month to at least $9,000 a month. I'm not even working myself silly either. I have a package that includes photo, video, drone and matterport. Agents loves it as I only charge $600-$700 and do about about 15 a month. Each house typically takes me about 2.5 hours, 1 hour to edit the video and 0 time editing photos (outsourced). All in all, my actual work time is about 4-5 hours. So I work about 75hrs a month with usually about 15 days off and make at least $9,000. I really can't believe I used to be ok with working part time at a retail store for $15/h and working 25hr weeks only to make about $75 per day.

I know some wedding photographers can make $5,000+ a weekend but fuck weddings. Real Estate is so much more relaxing and chill.

My output is much less now, but that helps me be selective. I try not to do do-overs. I was so prolific in my first year that I feel I have to do photos I have not done before.

I've been going to concerts large and small like every other week for 10+ years and the only time they asked me to put my camera away was a Neutral Meme Hotel reunion show. I'm a fujitard though, maybe more professional looking cameras are not allowed. I know museums have a policy like that, you are allowed to make snapshits with your phone, but you need like a special ticket if you want to take pics with a pro camera. The camera being level doesn't mean you have a straight horizon. The person viewing your photograph doesn't know the camera was level, they'll simply see the mountains sloping downward from left to right and assume you forgot to level your camera.

I agree on the unbalanced composition comment as well. Negative space is fine to balance out your subject, but there's way too much at the top. Plus the part of the cliff in the top right of the frame is unnecessary and distracting. I'm still not in love with the composition, but it looks slightly better to me if I cover the top 25% or so with my hand.

Your subject (the flowers? or at least the foreground) is exposed for zone 3, the clouds are exposed for zone 5, and the rando patch of clouds in the background are exposed for zone 7. Hell you can you can push +1.5 on the jpg without blowing highlights.

I've only done 1 "commercial" property, the rest have all been residential for brokers or agents.

Lots of cold calls, emails and texts. Eventually a few of those got to the right people and then word of mouth did the rest.

Once you get a few agents or even better, a broker, you will never be low on clients. You just have to make sure you don't lower your rates to compete. There were plenty of times I reached out to agents and they told me they had a guy who will do an entire 4,000sqft house for $100. My photos start at $175 for just 10.

If you aren't comfortable reaching out to clients, this won't work well for you unless you already happen to know a few real estate agents yourself. But in my opinion reaching out to agents for real estate services is a lot easier than reaching out to potential clients for portrait work.

My portrait work is "good" but apparently doesn't stand out enough to get a lot of people to recommend me to be sustainable.

I take photos because I want to capture the beauty in my life. Also because I like don’t have any hobbies otherwise. I have a beautiful wife, beautiful children, and beautiful pets. Nothing last forever, and I want to be able to capture these fleeting moments in time. When I show my pictures to others, they ask why I don’t dont this professionally. Two reasons: (1) because then I would loose my only hobby in exchange for a “side hustle” and (2) I can only capture something I think is beautiful because photography is an expression of my love. If I had to photograph others, god forbid something vile like a woman with makeup or a non-kin man, I just wouldn’t be able to muster the effort. Photography is a deeply personal expression of my joy and appreciation for the people around me. This is also why I struggle with landscapes and street photography, because I literally don’t care unless my wife is in the shot.

The closest I've ever done is my brothers wedding but it was a gift. I took a little over 6.8k pictures and just gave them all of them. I figured if even 10% of them turned out that's still a 680 good pictures.

I’ve always enjoyed taking photos to capture the moment/emotion/scenery that will never ever happen again.
It’s been a year since I’ve started taking photography more seriously. Now I’m somewhat a pocket photographer for my gf who does modelling.

never cared much about my subjects except when taking pictures, that's when i get into flow with things around myself and really enjoy their presence

i tried doing it for a living but money was not enough to support myself and photography as a hobby, probably related to the fact that i was poor for 3rd world country standard
my current job/career gets me enough money so i can take pics as a hobby

i had my pictures displayed in museums and local art galleries when i was doing it professionally; even though it did command nice prices, it was rather erratic as income source so i quit; nonetheless it was pleasing to be able to show and get feedback on my pics from curators and very dear photographers such as sebastião salgado
