Oscar Marzaroli
Glasgow based street photographer I discovered after 5 years of shooting the exact same streets he did. The unintended parallels to his work drew me closer to what he had done, in the end becoming almost obsessed with his work.

Pic related, I have a large print of it on my wall, tied with two others as my favourite photo of all time.

William P. Gottlieb. I pulled hundreds of his Kodachrome slides out of a dumpster a few years ago, and I've been fascinated with them ever sense. Quite different from most of his published work.

I also have to mention W. Eugene Smith, David Douglas Duncan, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Garry Winogrand, Vivian Maier, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, David Doubilet, a bunch of modern urbex and architectural photographers, and >>3997629, desu.

His son Steve, who is also a decently well-known photographer, had an office upstairs from my old job. He threw out a bunch of stuff when he moved out, and I scrounged a bunch of camera gear and a lot of his own negatives and slides from the trash, in addition to this collection. He had told me a bit about his father before, and had some of his jazz musician portraits framed in the office. Cool guy, always very interesting to talk to, and one of the earlier photographers that I know of to concentrate on abandoned buildings as a recurring theme.

Anyone notice how he always insists on saying 'my' when referring to cameras/lenses/any gear he uses?
A normal person would probably say
>I took this pic on an EOS 5D with the EF 50mm f/1.8
But not Ken. Oh no no no. He'll go
>I took this pic on my EOS 5D with my EF 50mm f/1.8
Especially odd since he doesn't keep a lot of gear and basically just gets many of these items to test them before reselling. Another example, he takes a photo of his son with a laptop and he'll describe it like
>Here's a photo of my son with my Apple MacBook Air 2012.
As if the viewer can't tell that it's a MacBook, and as if the model or model year has any sort of relevance.

Yeah, I'm conflicted about it too, but he was juggling a lot of personal shit at the time. He was actually living in the office for a while because he was in the middle of a divorce, and he'd just been diagnosed with cancer as well. Given the amount of his own work and equipment he tossed along with his dad's slides, it really seemed like he was in a "fuck everything" frame of mind. Pretty sad desu. Hope he's doing well now.

I believe that particular photo is somewhere in the English midlands, although I can't pinpoint it specifically. The majority of the collection is from England, Scotland and Wales, with a few sets from Scandinavia mixed in.

The purpose of these photos has always been a mystery to me, since they're so different from his other work in terms of subject, techniques and the tools he used. His jazz portraits were mostly taken with a Graflex press camera, and were carefully staged and posed to use his limited film supply as efficiently as possible. Besides the major difference of being 35mm color slides, when you look through the collection you can see him taking several shots of each scene to get just this right result, and there are a lot more candid shots. For every image I scanned, there are usually at least three or four more of the same scene as he works to get the best result.

After he retired from his jazz work, he founded a company called University Films, which produced educational film strips. That name appears all over the boxes that the slides are packed in, alongside Gottlieb's name, so I have to wonder if he was out there taking shots to be used in his films, or if he just took a bunch of vacation shots during a tour of Europe and had them delivered to the company's office after processing. For a while I was afraid that they were taken by some other person affiliated with the company, but I found several examples of Gottlieb's handwriting online, and it's a match for the handwriting on the slides and boxes. There is so little information online about University Films, and I haven't been able to find anything remotely like a complete list of their releases to see if they produced one on Britain.

my friend. back when we were kids he used to randomly show up with a disposable camera when we would hangout on summer afternoons or weekends and take shots that are just so precious to have now, 20 years later.

he doesn't even own a camera and never did. it was a good 10 years before i bought a camera and started getting serious and documenting everything with high quality shots, long exposures, etc etc, which has amounted to absolute yyyyears of thousands of precious photos but he's the one who unwittingly started it all
>>
I don't have a favorite photographer. I have favorite cinematographers though. I will never make films but I can at least take photographs

Recently it's Rinko Kawauchi
She turns overexposuring into magic
>>
>>4044279
her work is very delicate. did she go back to mf film? i recall that retard faggot parr persuaded her to start using digital mid 2010s, and she started doing pure garbage.
>>
>>4044280
not sure, i only have her illuminance book.
don't think that style would work in digital, as blown highlights look horrible in digital in my experience

Tuff call...I'm an old fart and started with film as a youngster in 1975...Digital in 1998..
Many faves...but my all-time faves are (not necessarily in order) are...
Obviously Ansel Adams: "...no rules for good photograph's, there are only good photograph's" , incredible black and white photography, he had mastered the art of b/w his sense of nature/landscape (and much more) was incomparable to any others.

Robert Capa: Famous for his WW2 photos including D-Day, He had photographed my father at D-Day and the photo appeared in the June edition of the Life mag.

Dorothea Lange: for her incredible work in and around WW2 era capturing basic American struggling families for the FSA.

Lewis Wickes Hines: Photographed the child labor issue in the early 1900's, his photos were key to changing laws regarding child labor .

My personal fave is my mentor and friend (RIP): Robert Bellott, more likely you have never heard of him, but many know his work.
Bob did the very recognizable photo for the "Alien" movie (the green egg thingy) in his NYC studio. He also did the Aerosmith album cover "Night in the Ruts" and a few Rolling Stones covers, a shit ton of Sony ads in mags through the 1980's and 90's (so much more). A good man and an incredible photographer, I will miss him, his style and technique were just fantastically inspiring to me as a teen and knowing him personally gave me an opportunity to learn a shitload about photography (he passed about four years ago).

Pic is a Lewis Hine photo.

If anyone is interested, Rob Bellott used a match head(s) to get the bottom "bright flare" below the egg. He accepted a one-time (substantial) payout for the photo not knowing it was going to be a "famous" photo. He declined the "royalty" payout for the one-time deal.

he did the scanlines too? or that was the studio
>>
>>4045925
I just snatched that pic off the web, I have tried to reach out to his son for a copy of the original as we are supposed to work on a project together in the near future, his son is a talented painter, once we sit down I will def get more info on the whole "shoot". There was studio editing involved and I don't know how much of it was his or studio work.
We were originally planning on doing a documentary on Robert with interviews etc when he suddenly fell ill and passed away a few years ago.
