Critique thread, roast our shitty pics.

Specific advice on composition and especially color would be helpful. Trying to get back into things after a bout of depression so I'm pretty rusty with my editing skills. This first one was underexposed so I'm wondering if the foreground/tree looks fine without having blown out the brighter area in the back.
I also don't know how to edit colors correctly at all since I only ever learned b/w, so general advice on that would be great

I think this one's compelling to me due to the guy in the middle providing a sense of the scale of the landscape, and I like the textures. It was taken out of a moving bus though so I wonder if the composition is really that strong or if I just like looking at it

I shot this one as a jpeg initially, then cropped in to improve the composition so the resolution is terrible. I'm not sure how I feel about the colors on this one either, since I think I tried to set the white balance manually but I don't think I did a great job

This feels like it should be really nice but doesn't pop that much. I'm not sure if its because of the colors, the way I shot it, or if my camera just doesn't handle vast landscapes well since its fairly old and the resolution isn't as good as newer cameras

I don't have a shot like that since I was trying to take pics of the pillars with the landscape in the background. I also think my camera tends to make everything at a far distance look flat and dull due to the resolution. Now that you point it out though I agree that the pillars and background don't work super well together in that pic

I never found these types of scenes to be very photogenic. IMO, there is too much going on aesthetically, and I find that this forest scenery, in general, is better digested at the macro level. I'd be finding an insect crawling on that mossy branch, a colorful mushroom hidden away in the shade, or a salamander hiding under a rock.

>>3981385
I actually really like the composition here. Great mixture of the human element and untamed nature.

>>3981394
The chroma noise really hurts this photo....did this scene really need 1/1000 sec s.s. at the cost of worse chroma noise than a phone camera?

>>3981401
>>3981402
Having people in the frame is better. Not that interesting of a composition either way, though.

>>3981403
A photo that could tell a story, if there were something on that table in the foreground, I think.

>>3981408
>>3981412
The problem here is that the ratty pavilion isn't that interesting to look at. It's just an empty pavilion and it's neither brand new nor completely decrepit. For these sorts of photos, you have to remember what it was that drew you to the scene in the first place and try to emphasize that.

>>3981419
I really like this one...so much going on with the human element, and a lot of it is subtle. You don't notice the man at first, like you don't notice all the cracked plaster at first, then you notice the tarp over his porch, the graffiti, etc.

thanks for the feedback!

> I never found these types of scenes to be very photogenic...
I think there's something I like about these nature pics with the detailed texture, its just hard to actually compose something well. Picrel is an example of one that I really like I took around the same time, I like the textures of the water and pine needles and leaves, I like how everything pops (its purposely overcooked a bit to the point where it doesn't even look much like a forest river anymore), its a cluttered overly detailed mess but something about it is compelling. Feel free to disagree though, its an old shot and I'd do it differently now

> the chroma noise...
Moving bus pic, I needed a high shutter speed which meant bumping the ISO. I'll see what it looks like in b/w

> Having people in the frame is better...
for landscapes? I like that second one but I think its one of the few vast landscapes I've taken that doesn't look completely flat

> The problem here is that the ratty pavilion isn't that interesting to look at...
I don't disagree. I do like the form and the sense of decay from being in a place like that but looking at it I'm not sure I captured that the best here

It's tilted and you've pointed the camera down. Fix that and it's better. Then you'd notice the corner of the pillar makes a hard contrast and it's right on the third. That makes it hard not to look at it. Crop the left side a bit and you'll notice it's easier to look at the mountain.

The bigger problem is that you created a frame, but didn't use it very well. The mountain is beautiful, but the composition less so.

I'm also having fun playing around with shit in GIMP. I'm essentially a monkey throwing shit at a wall, until I see something I like. Is it good?
Probably not.
Am I enjoying myself?
Fuck yes I am!

I think that would legitimately look good printed in b&w onto canvas or cotton rag, and then toned with old wine that had been allowed to oxidize prior to use.
