i LOVE shooting with outdated gear, its really liberating to just only worry about actual technique like framing, composition, subjects, etc. and not worry about how many megapickles your camera has, or how noisy iso is

just shoot and have fun

i took this in 2016 with an old used sony i bought for like $60

My photo hero is Daido Moriyama, hes the jap who put the Ricoh on the map

i dont much care for his photos, they all seem very similar and boring to me, BUT i really look up to his work ethic

literally just stop giving a shit about gear and shoot good photos that you want to see more of. Buying an expensive oven doesnt make you a better cook, but an experienced cook knows how to utilize an expensive oven

Nice anon. Been thinking about picking up a low res digishit for spooky photos
>>
I'm torn with these. I like the form factor but I always feel like a good photo taken by a shitty digital camera would always be better if it was taken with a DSLR or something. I also hate how blotchy colors get on a lot of these cameras.

I want a point and shoot to sneak past guards in zoos and that sort of irrationally disallowed places. What is the best compromise between quality and price to you? I'm looking for something that costs no more than 300, but preferably something i can get for half of that.
>>
>>3946906
I don't remember if it was that one or the previous model, but one of them powershots had one of the best mics I've ever heard. For what they are, aka tiny cameras, of course. But they had such great sound recording.

>>
>>3947745
>How much did you fuck with these in photoshop
My bet would be nothing, super ccd was the only good thing to come out from fujishit in the digital era. The colorslook that good straight out of the camera, but for marketing reason they were advertised at twice the resolution the cameras were capable of. I have one and it only looks like that at 6 megapickles.
>>
>>3947877
I mean I have one of the later ones at 12mpx, the f20 would look its best at 3.
>>
>>3946934
I forgot I have an UZ also. I should take it out and play around soon. Mine has a dozen or so dead pixels though and the pixels being so big really accentuates it. The photos need a lot of clean up.

I've been using an Olympus Mju Digital 300 for a couple of years now. Out of all the cameras I have ever owned, it is by far my favorite.
I really love the pictures I get out of it. I always do just a little bit of editing to make them something I love. These cameras are cheap as fuck so try to buy one if you can. I'll post a few images I took in the last 2 weeks.

Hey there, not to be a fag but i've been wanting to ask you some questions, i rarely visit the board and in fact i shouldn't be here but you have been somewhat of an example to follow for me after you posted some pics of the Stylus 300 almost two years ago, i even reposted a couple not long ago after some anon posted some good photos of similar style.

I know you also didn't post for a long time (i checked) so, for my question, how did you pull such contrast and colors in the pool shots and some others "naturally"? here's an example, is it filters/VSCO, Photoshop or just lighting? i know some reserve it as a chef's secret recipe but i've wondered anyways because they have few visible artifacts in terms of the camera's sensor.
Without using extensive filters or techniques i find pretty hard to come close to your color work, some of the street/general scenery ones i share a somewhat similar style i've managed to reach but some of the other stuff i know for a fact, because you said so, used a Stylus 300 i just can't.

After you posted on the /dst/ those images some weeks before the pandemic started i bought myself the Olympus and experimented a little, only one (1) picture comes near it. My second question is, because i've seen your IG, that the skies get blotchy with artifacts but in your early ones i don't see that defect, in my experience it is better to shoot the Oly in HQ rather than SHQ but you might have another technique. Also not to bother you more but what's your general idea or intuition to activate the flash? it is pretty harsh and i don't know when to use it without looking like a spaz on the few occasions i've been out of my apartment, yet you seem to have nailed it more than a few occasions.
Also cool photos lol, been seeing them extensively.

helloooo. Generally i find that straight out of the camera the colours and contrast are pretty strong (especially the blues).
The image on the left was actually taken the first day I had bought the camera and from memory I had applied vsco's ektachrome 100vs lightroom filter on it. A lot of the photos I took on the mju from that time had that same filter applied.
I never really wanted to spend too much time editing the photos from a digicam from 2003 so I would almost always chuck some kind of filter on it and change the settings to my liking. I still use that same process today but I wont go for such strong filters as often now.
I think if you're shooting with old digicams the old vsco lightroom filters are great fun and you can find them online for free easily enough.

As for what quality settings on the camera i use, I have only ever used the HQ one as it saves on memory a little bit but I haven't given it too much thought.

With the flash I think for most instances I will have it turned off unless I am taking photos inside or of something dark. I agree that the flash is harsh on this camera and needs a touch of editing to even out the image.

Would love to see some photos you took with the mju. Such a great little camera

>especially the blues
Agreed, Oly always had cold temp and strong blues, a look i like very much and this camera certainly has it. But it's rare for me to get things looking as defined as you did.
>vsco's ektachrome 100vs
>never really wanted to spend too much time editing the photos from a digicam from 2003
>so I would almost always chuck some kind of filter on it and change the settings
The consistency was always on point that's why i suspected the filter play, along with that particular aesthetic being shown in your VSCO account.
You won't like reading that i spent nearly the hour in Photoshop tweaking single images manually, my workflow doesn't have much quality nor quantity but it makes me feel like i did enough to sleep well without the OCD of what-ifs which often bother me.
Nothing extreme like accurate masks or painting, just subtle curve adjustments and micro-tweaking sharpness and stuff but sometimes i do use an old Luminar version for changing exposures by area.
>I have only ever used the HQ one
It has a different rendition than SHQ, the spherical aberration and "softness" is more notorious in HQ but S makes the chromatic aberrations sharper along with the vegetation/high-frequency details. HQ in general is more pleasing.
>I think for most instances I will have it turned off unless I am taking photos inside or of something dark
You have a particular notion with flash that stands out very well: It doesn't look that much like in-camera flash and it is harsh but makes things have more contrast rather than flatten the image. It screams of '90s fashion shoots.
>Would love to see some photos you took with the mju
First time i will post pics here in eons but your request is a special exception. This is a camera i like a lot because the image quality doesn't make me take it that seriously which in turn makes me have fun editing, just wish it had less artifacts when big swatches of the same colors appear.
BTW thanks for sharing those pics years ago.

Pretty wild how this tiny four thirds sensor on a thirteen year old camera still looks better than a phone.

Even an iphone 13 pro max (what a ridiculous name btw) still smears all fine details.
>>
>>3955995
Resaved some example shot here as quality 94 jpeg, best I could get while staying under 5 MB, so jpeg artifacts shouldn't be an issue.

Look at the halo around the leaves.
Look at the smearing on street details.

And this is the main camera of a 1200€+ phone.
>>
>>3956001
Despite all that, my girlfriend still wants me to buy her that phone
>>
>>3956009
Honestly these example shots look like HDR boomer photos from 2009.
I don't understand why phone jpeg engines are still so terrible. The sensor and lens are completely fine, you can download an iphone raw and get spectacular results with a little processing.

But phone software lets us down, as always.
>>
>>3956025
I wonder how true this is. Are the iphone raws smeared like >>3956001?

>>

No. Many review sites let you download original sooc files, and you can just check the files your own phone produces as well (if you have a higher tier model, that is).

I've seen plenty of photos from old digicams that are really amazing in tonality and texture.
Some time back a youtube (LGR maybe?) took pics on a mavica floppy disk camera and people in the comments were remarking that their phones couldnt do as well.
Regardless of the numerical (ostensible) superiority of the modern sensors, there are definitely subtleties of the old sensors and how the image processing was tuned that can give them a pleasing look.
on Radojuva (https://radojuva.com/en/2013/04/nikon-mount-legend/) there's even pages with significant engagement concerning nostalgia for older 6MP CCDs with photos that embarrass sensors 4 times that size.

>pic kind related, a picture recently developed that a guy found still rolled in a 70 yr old leica

I have a "modern", high res, full frame camera and I don't worry a lot about what you mentioned, but it's precisely because I know the camera is really good and pretty much any technical failing is my fault, not the camera's. I don't see how or why using something nicer makes you have to focus on the camera specs.

I had an olympus when I was 20 living in the Dominican republic. Cherished memories are preserved instead of being lost in the wind of father time.

Honestly, smart phones are just getting as good as point and shoots from 2007 era. People actually put more effort in back then, and it seems a lot more was preserved.

I still remember that girl from Quebec.

These photos were pulled from google drive so I dont' know how compressed and fucked they got.

is it because of the lens or something more? I still feel like modern smart phones are still below almost 15 year old point and shoots.
>>
>>3962286
Shit lenses, tiny sensors, aggressive computational noise reduction and always on HDR stacking. Pair it with a tiny display that hides the flaws and no one notices enough to care. The worst you get from an old camera is oversharpening baked in.
>>
>>3962286
Digital cameras more or less peaked around 2008 and there haven't been any major leaps in technology since then. There's no way to make the hardware in phones better than a 15 year old point and shoot, at least not at this point in time. That and camera phones were still a novelty in 2008 and serious investment in the technology didn't even start until like 2012.
>>
>>3962337
Ok, so what are the best point and shoots?

From my research I agree that 2008 seems best vintage. I think lower megapixel count of around 8 is best for the sensor size.
>>
Nikon coolpix 5000
>>
>>3962381
You can pick up prosumer point and shoots for like $10-30 on ebay. I had a Kodak EasyShare z1015 is that goes for around $20, works plenty well.

If you mean the thin profile P&S like Op, unironicaly go to Good Will and poke around. Those things cost less than the shipping.

fuck, bros. I am going to try to explain how much this thread fucked me up today. It lead me down one giant, emotional, rabbit hole. I'm the guy who posted all the Dominican republic pics with the stylus 820.

fuck, the pics are emotional themselves. Then I look at the pictures, and go "fuck" why do they still look so good. Go down the rabbit hole on CCM sensors and point and shoots.

I spent all day trying to figure what point and shot is best.

I really think 2008 is the best year. You REALLY want the 8 mp range. Those big pixels have all the light information that really makes the photos look charming. once you get above 10mp it starts to look like inferior current cameras.

on of the best point and shoots has to be the Canon powershot a590
https://www.digicamdb.com/specs/canon_powershot-a590-is/

8mp, manual controls, AA batteries, SD cards, Stunning photos.

You can get it for $20 all day on ebay.
>>
>>3962286
It's pretty much what >>3962288 said.

>The worst you get from an old camera is oversharpening baked in.
Many cams from the 2000s will let you shoot RAW, either stock or with alternative firmware like CHDK for Canon.

If you develop a RAW from one of these old cams yourself, you will blow any phone out of the water if you know how to light a scene correctly.
>>
>>3962381
Anything that gives you RAW output.

JPEG engines on early digicams were pretty bad back then. Embedded processors were an order of magnitude slower, so they could only process photos in a very primitive manner.

You'll be surprised what image quality is hidden in those old sensors when you develop their RAWs yourself.

i really wish these little cameras came with little spots you could hook a neck strap to, so you could blind-fire from chest height.

Is there a way to rig a neck strap hook to these?

What you are describing is exactly how I've been feeling about my camera, it's a really good one, mirrorless, modern, but I never feel inspired when I take it with me and end up hating every picture I take.
Before that I took tons of great pictures with my old iphone 7 Plus.

The pictures you took with the 5€ cam are way better.

The better the camera, the more work to use it and more editing feels like work. I feel pretty inspired sticking a mirrorless in program mode and get good results but more thoughtful compositions and editing raws sucks the life out of it. Doing studio flash work with film is more engaging. I think it really helps that I'm out of the brainless snapshot and overthinking phases and the tools don't matter as long as the lack of them isn't an active detriment. Otherwise, one expects more and is disappointed by their own incompetence.

>>

thanks for the reviews, that elevator pic was also what conviced me hahah.

in terms of iq, the grain looking like film and the portability of the camera, the s95 absolutely held up to the expectations. i thought of loading chdk but as it has raw natively i dont care.

the issue i have is, as stated, doesn't inspire me. might be because i bought it a couple weeks ago when exam season started and i haven't had as much time to go out, im home all the time studying.

it also feels too good and premium to the point it doesn't really feel like a digishit camera, it's in a weird place between a point and shoot and a bad mirrorless camera. i got into p&s so i could NOT focus on gear but here i am again comparing sensors and shit

I'd say that ISO400 is the ultimative sweetspot for this little camera when it comes to 'film-like' images. The noise introduced at ISO400 really does give you that vibe only film grain could provide.

That's a really good price, here people are crazy and trying to sell theirs for 80 euros, the least expensive one I've found is 30 euros, which is ok I guess.

Is the zoom any good ?
>>
Got my S95 today.
First impressions:

- you can tell it used to be a premium product, everything is much higher quality than my A590 which is roughly from the same time
- I really love the idea of a tiny all-in-one camera, it's really fun to use. I'm now seriously considering a modern 1" or MFT compact
- nevertheless, not having an EVF is a huge downside for me
- the dynamic range is very limited compared to my main camera (E-M10 Mk III). Compared to a modern fool frame, it's a joke
- nevertheless, when the lighting is right it really shines and colors pop
- I fully agree with >>3946931, old gear also has the benefit of making your modern gear seem like pure luxury once you go back to it

pics to follow soon

furthermore:
- bokeh is a complete joke, don't expect any meaningful subject separation here
- the image stabilizer works pretty well
- there seems to be no dead pixel correction in camera, you have to do it yourself in post
- the grain is pretty nice

pic rel are some quick raw edits in darktable, I used the wavelets chroma denoiser to keep the grain intact, no sharpening, local contrast or fake grain, just color adjustments and vignette

I hate that they didn't handle it right, like Oly did.
It can be done in CHDK, though. Take a dark exposure, run it through a PC tool, write the result to the card. Both JPG and RAW will be corrected.

I had a terrible time with mine, it came damaged (the LCD was pressed too hard), it broke my SD card (a plastic tab), then it caused it to snag my computer's SD card reader, it damaged the pin, and because I use linux I couldn't format it correctly. Been struggling with it all day, had issues with the SD card trying to fix the pin but my laptop had a driver issue at the same time since its a model that didn't get good support. Then I just went to a Windows computer, installed CHIMP, had a pic on DCIM, it auto installed, and that was it. I hated Linux and this camera so much today, I am gonna install Windows ASAP. This is the 3rd time I have to reconfig again, what does everyone have as theirs? Whats your zebra settings?

Heh, it happened to me, too.
The A590 is such a cheap and simpe digishit but on the other hand it's a lot of fun to use as well.

Only downside - I can't get CHDK to start automatically at all; I have to do it manually via the 'firmware update' option every single time, which kind of sucks.. but then.. who am I to expect anything good from a digishit like that?

It's fun, anon. Get it.

a590 chads rise up. Mine came in a couple days ago. Having a ton of fun. I have only messed around with 400 iso, hard to get exposure times down without flash.

JPEG output is surprisingly good. I am getting God tier battery life with the Ikea rechargeable.

Don't wanna check what a Sony A7SIII costs then
>>
>>3966506
it's always been pricey sadly
old leica fags love em
>>
This is probably a dumb question but I just started learning about cameras ; does the shutter count matter on old digicams ?
>>
>>3966687
On the ones that have shutter, sure. Shutter repair, if possible, will be more expensive than the value of the camera after you repair it.

Old cameras that take AAs are better because you can just buy rechargeables super cheap and not have to worry about trying to source ancient batteries or using 15 year old ones that barely hold a charge anymore. You barely even notice them in your pockets if you want to carry some spares too
