Xpan:
+ less of a hassle to shoot with
+ easy to load
+ viewfinder actually matches what you’re shooting without modification
+ smol
- expensive as fuuuuuck
- if it breaks, it breaks; no one can really repair them anymore, and they’re all pretty old.

Medium format:
+ Can also shoot the big negs
+ potentially relatively cheap
+ old mechanical ones may be more reliable long-term than the electronics in an XPan
- Bulky
- You’ll need to mask the viewfinder if you want to know what you’re shooting
- either you’re loading 120 and wasting film or you’re using 35mm in an adapter and dealing with that fiddly process.

Ultimately it’s up to you. Personally, I wouldn’t buy an Xpan (unless I saw one for like $5 at a thrift store) because I think they’re too expensive for how fragile they are, but I would really like to own one.

Anon, you can have digital mosaic corresponding to digital, or large format, even when using 1" sensor.

ridiculously expensive meme camera with only three lenses, lacking features for the extreme price including a max shutter speed of only 1/1000, will eventually brick leaving you with nothing as they can't really be repaired.

I echo the other anons in this thread, if you want pano either buy a regular MF camera with a back, buy MF and crop, or now buy digital and crop.
>>
You can buy a capable MF SLR and a compact 35mm for the xpan price. Plain overvalued.

The irony is that cinema is filmed on a tighter format than full frame cameras because the film runs vertically lol, it's APS-C or smaller.

Maybe 10 years ago,

New cine cameras are coming out with full frame now. The tech has gotten so cheap and storage/data solutions are so fast now with SSDs and shit that it makes no sense to handicap your production with tiny sensors anymore
>>

Sigma Quattros have an in built pano crop mode. You could also get a Fuji GFX50R which also has a pano crop.

There's also a guy who designed a 3D printed 35mm xpan alternative.

>>3865222
You think productions buy the cameras they use? Why do you insist on talking about things you don't know?
Full frame blurs too much with typical f-stops. It gives you that dreaded early 2010s cheap DSLR look.
>>
Actually why haven't literally anyone made a modern XPan or even just a normal modern film camera?
Shouldn't be that hard to make something that can take film instead of a digital sensor. Has to be somewhat profitable
>>
>>3859952
rent free
>>
>>3865234
God help me, I'm tempted to buy a Quattro for that crop mode, even though I've bought about a thousand dollars worth of Sigma bodies in the past and always been disappointed with them.
>>
>>3865246
>You think productions buy the cameras they use
No they rent it from companies that want to milk their investments you fucking nigger. Semantics aside in 10 years full frame will be standard for video because of how cheap its going to get and data solutions being faster and cheaper with SSD. Thats even before mentioning image quality and better lenses

You really have to know what your delivery format will be during capture and use frame guide lines on your viewfinder if you can.

I've never heard of any xpan's breaking randomly. The only xpan's ive seen broken are the ones that are beat up and clear have had decades of use. I dont think xpan's are any worse than say a nikon fm2n in the sense that it will operate as long as you treat it right. Once it gets tossed around, dipped in water or fried then yeah it will *probably* break but its not a fragile camera in particular
