Guys, I really, really want to shoot medium format. The only problem is that it's just so goddamn expensive. The prices for a Hasselblad is just insane, and the fact that the lenses alone are worth thousands just throws away the idea of ever owning one. The fujifilm GFX 50R is the most reasonable purchase, but even that is expensive. Film is the cheapest, but even that is still expensive. On top of that, I'd have to pay for development and I just don't want to do that when. I really want to get into medium format, but it's just so goddamn expensive. If there's any MF owners here, can you tell me if it's really worth the money? Are there any alternatives, or am I just fucked?
>>3825062you aren't the target audience.the target audience pays off their MF system in a single session.pay to play.stop obsessing over sensor size, it really doesn't matter in 2020.
>>3825063It’s called target demographic and working photographers don’t net 30k a session. Stop trying to sound like you know money.
>>3825062Pentax 645Z645D for poorfag option
>>3825063>>3825064So, should I just forget about it all together? I just want to take landscape photos, and my camera has a fixed 35mm lens on it. >>3825067Still so expensive though...
>>3825062There really isn't an advantage over high resolution FF unless you can afford a 100mp or 150mp body and the glass to match. And because so much money is invested in FF R&D the fastest glass is actually on FF.As for film, high resolution FF competes with 6x9. Maybe if you're drum scanning Velvia 50 you'll see a small gain. You don't shoot MF film for IQ, you shoot it because you want to shoot film and the IQ gain over 35mm is significant.
Just get a film medium format and dev/scan on your own. It’s still pricey, but less than a digital FF setup really. You can get a camera+dev/scan setup for under $1000.Medium format has a nice distinct look, and it has lots more detail compared to 35mm film. I usually find myself shooting 35mm or aps-c unless I have something specific I want to shoot. You have to print pretty large to actually see the extra detail.[EXIF data available. >>3825070>I just want to take landscape photos, and my camera has a fixed 35mm lens on it.Literally just save up for any aps-c or FF camera and a solid UWA zoom. I shot for years on an 18mp 7D with a Tokina 11-16 and have made plenty of 17x22 and 16x24 landscape prints.
>>3825070If you really only want landscape you can get a Fujica GS645W or GSW690 series.
>>3825070Try out a 645 system anon. You get all the bells and whistles, good scans run right with any digital back from the first couple generations, good economy. Plus you’re only risking like $1K if you end up not liking it. Unless you just aren’t comfortable with film in general, but if landscapes are your focus you would be cucking yourself not giving film a chance. >>3825076Don’t listen to this anon he’s an idiot.
Medium format is fun as hell. Just get an older film camera and go nuts. I have a Mamiya 33C that I use and it's great.
>>3825064>working photographers don’t net 30k a sessioncommercial photographers using MF systems do"wedding" and "event" photographers struggle to put food on tables
>>3825084How many commercial photographers do you know anon?
>>3825062>want a thing>can't afford thingSo, maybe set realistic budgeting goals?
>>3825071Yea... i’ve been eyeing the mf stuff a bit and it really doesn’t seem to make sense - the f1.2 glass on a high mp ff makes it pointless buying a mf camera - their lenses just can’t create that shallow depth of field so you get more or less the same result when you factor in the shallow dof of the mf sensor. I don’t think i’m wrong here. Am i?
>>3825062>Guys, I really, really want to shoot medium format. Why?Answer that and you might get reasonable advice.
>>3825104this>>3825112thatAlso psst kids, there's this little secret called Brenizer Method.
>>3825062>really want to shoot medium format. Why? Your pictures are gonna be the same.
>>3825111No, you're not wrong, that was the point.
>>3825062Guess what anon, i am (was) in your spot. I bought my GFX 50R yesterday. Have yet to buy a proper lens.Do i need it? Hell noDo i want it? Hell yeahYou SHOULD look for other reasons other than >big sensorI honestly had some reasons, those still don't justify spending 3k on a body and none on lenses, but off we go.The lenses that will do justice to the sensor are terribly expensive, even chink garbage lenses. if you want the "real medium format look" you need fast glass, since you have 51.4mp you might as well buy fast and sharp glass.A 50mm f1.4 vintage lens will give you the MF look, badly and soft, but it will for less than 100 USD, an adapted Sigma Art 50mm f1.4. will also do that, and it will cost you 1000 USDI'm about to suck it up and buy that so i can potentially use the sensor to it's fullest instead of using 50 USD optics on a 3k body.>can you tell me if it's really worth the money? It's only worth it if you do have some money lying around, you are stupid like me and KNOW you will deeply enjoy the camera for a long while.>Are there any alternatives, or am I just fucked? Not really, you could speedboost a Sony A7 with a garbage adapter or use one of those choyna made f0.95 lenses on it, but it's not very ideal, also, landing focus at f0.95 blows.Earning money or not from photography is an afterthought for me right now but you should definitely consider that, i will try to, 3k-4k of money is no joke.
>>3825084No one I know doing weddings use MF, the biggest best wedding photographer I know says the huge price, slow expensive lenses and bad AF for a meager quality return don't justify him selling his RF and EF lenses for it.

>>3825290what camera is that one? why does it says fuji on top?
>>3825062Rent one. Dynamic range is fantastic, but it's still not good enough to beat exposure stacking for high quality shots. Same goes for resolution, it's great, but panorama stacking can be even better... I used gfx50 interchangeably with m43 for the last two years. At the end each year I'm doing calendars, this year, all but one of the 13 pics came from m43. All 100mp+ panorama stack.
>>3825291The one you have with you
>>3825294what did you use your m43 camera for? i have mine just for shits and giggles.
if you really want medium format, get something cheap like the LOMO Lubitel 166 and shoot film. otherwise, just go FF digital with a 50mm f/1.4 if you just want the medium format look
>>3825291>why does it says fuji on top?anon thats called a brand. Fuji GX680
>>3825317FF 50mm f1.4 and the same lens on crop-MF looks a tad different.It would be a 40mm f1.1, that's a bit unique.
>>3825062>If there's any MF owners here, can you tell me if it's really worth the money?Ehhhhh in terms of getting better images, no. A full frame digital camera's images are gonna be indistinguishable from medium format digital in the vast majority of circumstances.I shoot medium format film because medium format film is noticeably better than 35mm film, but even then, I mainly do it because medium format cameras are fun rather than because of the image quality advantages. Honestly, even 6x7 doesn't look better than (or even as good as!) what I get out of full frame digital, but the process of taking pictures and then having to wait to see the scans is weirdly fun so I keep doing it even though it's crazy expensive.Maybe look into a "cheap" medium format camera and see if you like it. Antique stores will often have cheap old folding medium-format cameras (but make sure the shutter doesn't stick, the bellows aren't rotting away, and that the camera is designed to take 120 film before you buy one) which you could play around with and see if you enjoy the results (and/or the process) enough to get a better one.
>>3825291>what camera is that one?A Fuji GX680>why does it says fuji on top?Because it's a Fuji GX680
>>3825332really didn't know fuji made that kind of bulky cameras, i thought thye only did those similar to the GW690
>>3825335There’s a reason they aren’t well known
>>3825335Its a system made for studio advertisement work, hence the movements, the 6x8 “tabloid” format, the size. I guess the jap ad companies didn’t need monorails for all their work, the 120 was good enough. It’s a fun camera, it was crazy expensive when it came out and the build quality shows. It gets a lot of shit here from onions because it’s large, heavy and awkward to use, but it’s relatively cheap, idiot-proof, the lenses are a work of art, you can turn it into 645, 6x6, 6x7, nobody knows it exists so it’s always a conversation starter. But it’s not something you throw into a bag and carry around, you have to purposefully go out to take pictures, which, for me, is great- I already took the fucker wih me so i *need* to make some photos. Maybe that's what you want to portray in your images and these idiots just don't see that. Some people get off on seeing women uncomfortable and you're providing that service for them. >>3826795Isn't HSS just as good tho?
>>3826958For digital it’s “just” as good because if it misses you’ll know. For film you need something more consistent.
>>3826958Nah not really.HSS is gonna eat 2 stops of light minimum, even more for the higher shutter speeds. Let’s say 3 stops at 1/1000.That’s the difference between a typical 70wattsecond portable flash and a 200-300wattsecond strobe with powerpack, with whatever that means for portability, modifier mounts, etc etc. .And that’s if you don’t care about depth of field. If you do, you need an ND as well.It *is* possible to always get the same results as leaf shutter, if you give enough power on your strobes for “overpowering the sun” and an ND for DoF (which would require even more power). It’s just that in many times it’s not practical. A doubling of guide number means 4 times as powerful a flash, or 4 times as many flashes. Imagine needing to stop down a further 2 stops to control ambient light, then you need 2 more stops of flash power. Now imagine you use a 2-stop ND to match the shallower DoF, requiring another 2 stops of flash power.4 stops of power is a huge fucking lot, verging on the unfeasible. Think of it like that: if you wanted to match the result of a leaf shutter camera with a portable speed light at full power - in terms of flash vs ambient ratio and DoF - with a camera that has 2 stops slower sync speed, you’d need 16 of the same speed lights firing. The saving grace is you usually don’t need full power so it’s usually more feasible, still not very practical though. It would be pretty based if Fuji offered parallel versions of their lenses, with a leaf shutter, for a premium. It seems they could do it if they wanted to, they have experience with leaf shutter (mechanical and electronic), both historically and also more recently.

>>3825063imagine being this wrongDOF and the subject's relation to the space around them changes dramatically with sensor/film size "Get a ladder out and take a fuckload of pictures" isn't a solution to that
>>3827432>DOF and the subject's relation to the space around them changes dramatically with sensor/film sizeFor the same focal length/aperture, yes. But not for an equivalent focal length/aperture. Now if no equivalent lens is available and you want that look, you have to shoot that lens, whatever format it is in. But I'm not sure if there are any such unique lenses left in MF. The fastest glass is now in FF.
>>3827443You could just adapt the fastest FF glass onto MF.

>>3825062Serious response for a thread devolving into trollingI got to bum a hassy X1D and the files it pumps out really are just stellar. That said I hate just about everything else about the camera. I normally run a 5Ds which is a comparable resolution but the color depth and tonality do not even come close to comparing to the X1D. I was pretty bummed out until I saw that the X1d has the highest rated sensor in the market. Does this matter under most shooting circumstance? No. I would probably still go with the 5Ds because it's more fun to shoot and has a lens and accessory selection that better fits what I do.I'm pretty ambivalent towards MF film. I played around some bronicas, mamiyas, and hassy film bodies and lenses and yeah they were nice but it was also kinda like whatever.https://www.dropbox.com/s/ztqk6uyrxhnbeao/b0008571.3fr?dl=0Here's a file if you want to play around with it.

I'm a noob, why do medium format photos look so unique/different to aps-c or full frame? I can't tell why but they look more like real life. I see a MF photo and think "wow that looks nice". And then I look FF pictures and don't know if it's a shitty phone snap shot or made with the A7R or something. Is it because the higher resolution that makes the image more crisp? Or because some render method? Also the GFX 50R looks so good. But god damn they are expensive
>>3831011>why do medium format photos look so unique/different to aps-c or full frame?Because people don't generally start with medium format early in their photographic careers, so you usually only see medium format shots from photographers who've spent years and years getting better at photography. Also the higher resolution, to a certain extent, but that's not as big a part of it.As proof: Any time I personally post medium format shots here, people don't go "Wow, that looks amazing, medium format is so lifelike". They just say "Lol, snapshit, you suck".
>>3831019Pls post one of your MF shots
>>3831019This. It's the skill that makes photo good. I've shot with hasselblad H4D40 not too long ago, but had shitty light, short time to use it properly and ended up with shots that were actually worse than those I got from 6D with 24-70 2.8 lens lol.Good photographers even in times when FF was morbidly expensive shot good photos. I know a commercial photographer that shoots for adverts he uses D850 and phase one xf system and I couldn't tell which shots were with phase one which with nikon. There is a difference yes, but it's up to photographer's skill to get most of it snapshits of cats won't improve much from having bigger sensor.
