Don't skim on the 40 dollar save bro, the Tiffen filter has this patented spray that diffuses the light but maintains the sharpness. Basically you can DIY a diffusion filter by dampening or greasing your filter but you'll lose the sharpness.

The giveaway is clipped highlights (especially the reflections on the hair) from the glow effect. I think that's somewhat evident here >>3790719 as well. That said, if you knew you were going to add it in post, I'd bet you could stop down 1/3-2/3 stops and compensate for it a little.

Either way, I'd argue there are still pros to using the filter instead of adding it in post. You could theoretically emulate a circular polarizer in post, it's just going to take a lot of time and effort compared to if you shot with the filter. More time and effort than emulating the glow I'm sure, but if you know you want that effect, why spend the extra time and effort compensating for the clipping while shooting, and then editing it in at the end?

These are still used for video in some circumstances. Yes you can fake it well enough in post for a still, but video editing is a lot more intensive.
Even today, there are still in use for video although not as popular as they used to be.
Most things a filter can do, digital processing can do. However it takes more time and sometimes the result displays evidence of the alteration. A fun example is using a continuous low burst over time to simulate ultra long exposures.

Not the same effect, but good effort.
The highlights are identical apart from having different colors, and there is some flare added, in the pic with the filter the highlights are substantially different.

How long did it take? I can imagine it wouldn't take many shifts flipping burgers for an 80$ filter to be worth it if you like the effect and want a lot of photos with it.

I like the black pro mist effect but i also like the effect i get for an old hoya diffuse filter and form a DIY version, where i have sprayed a thin mist of black spraypaint on an old UV filter.

Sup /p/, OP here thought this thread had died the night I posted it. And wew, I thought I was posting to photography forum, not an autism incubator. Most of you are pretty chill tho. There are some aspies foaming at their mouths because they fancy themselves as picture-perfect photographers. Don't get me wrong, I can get technical but at the end of the day I care more about atmosphere, timing and composition you know.. the stuff that actually matters.

This gearfag faggotry is so tiresome. The only reason why I'm shouting out Fujifilm is because their X100 line is the least intimidating yet powerful camera line in the game, Ricoh comes close but isn't as sharp or good in lowlight. This shit is so good when taking candid pictures. Anyway, I don't own stock in Fuji so buy whatever the fuck you want, but I can whip out this camera out of my chest-pocket in a second and I'm always strapped with this camera, wherever I go.

Anyway, now that we have the gearfaggotry out of the way let's talk about black pro-mist filter. A few thoughts, just because something is optically perfect doesn't mean the picture is more fun to look at, you can cry all you want about fringing, chromatic ab, bokeh balls but if you still make stale, boring photo's with 'correct colors' nobody gives a shit about your 'perfect' pictures. I'd even argue that black pro-mist filters simulate how we perceive the world better than without. Why? Have you ever stared at the streetlamp at night thinking it's a beautiful scenery, but when you shoot it it doesn't look anything like it? That's because eyes are wet and there is a small layer of water to keep your eyeballs hydrated. This layer of water essentially does the same, it diffuses the highlights making them more smooth and less contrasty. In post I can do shit like blend in extra colors in highlights that weren't there with split-toning and all that good stuff.

Stop obsessing over technicalities instead of aesthetics, it's so fucking gay.

I like underexposing in post and then pushing up highlights, blacks but bringing down shadows and then playing with whites accordingly. Lot's of wild calibration in post and a bit of noise reduction.

They're just sliders, don't be afraid to push them to their limits. it's the end result that matters the most, at least to me.

You goddamn idiot. Promist is for *specular* highlights, not any random hugeass chunks of highlights.
Your shot has diffuse, soft light all over with no specular highlights whatsoever (barring a couple pixels in the catchlight in her eye), and then a huge uniform chunk of gray/white.
It's a poster child of using a promist filter incorrectly, i.e. "there's some bright highlights, better slap a promist on and call it a day".

In any case, it doesn't improve the photo whatsoever, and it's a pretty mediocre photo if that, to begin with.

I find the reflection you get from using these very annoying. You have to have the camera at a specific angle to try to get it out of the shot, but then that affects the composition. See pic related. That blue orb moves around unless you tilt the lens down a lot.

Lowlight is debatable, the Ricoh sensors handle high iso better and the gr iii has ibis, but the x100v has a 1 stop brighter aperture.
Not that those things are the deciding factor though, the Fuji has a great EVF and the Ricoh is a tiny pocketable camera, they aren't really in the same category apart from both being popular street cameras.
