Despite what was going on last thread, with the cringey posturing about who was able to shoot nudes, I find that circumstances are actually different than as was claimed, where getting women naked seems to be quite easy. I have mixed feelings about all this nudity, coming from the same place that makes me entirely avoid it in my own photography. I don't see what it adds.
Got another shoot on wednesday with this visual artist I don't know. There was this Russian girl I have a thing for that I was going to shoot too, but it turns out she may have covid.

>I have mixed feelings about all this nudity, coming from the same place that makes me entirely avoid it in my own photography. I don't see what it adds.
It adds nudity. There's not a heck of a lot more to it than that, and doesn't need to be.

If you're not really a fan of naked pictures, that's fine. Everyone has different preferences.

If you don't understand why other people might want to take/look at naked pictures, then you're either being deliberately obtuse or you just need to accept that most people are wired differently than you and move on with your life. Popping into these threads to say "Well *I* don't get why people want to see nudity" doesn't add anything and is akin to going up to people eating pizza and telling them that you don't like their choice of topping. Like, okay? Good for you? No one gives a shit?

Although you're trying to portray me as nauseatingly edgy/contrarian, I have encountered this flavour of reactive contrarianism, sometimes pre-emptive, more often than I have bothered to express my opinion. This isn't some SJW "muh male gaze" shit. I do think there's merit to critiquing the use of nudity, because it's cheap tinsel. It's a crutch, a manipulative attempt to dazzle male viewers, or a juvenilely empty flex (as was demonstrated last thread with our resident inarticulate razor burn-depicting Eastern Euro). The photos in here are good, but I think people ought to ask themselves why they feel the need to do it. Nudes are the weakest branch of portraiture, and amount to a confused brofist. Given my own experiences dealing with models who offered or requested nudity, I have a feeling that it's also a depressing sociological and sexual phenomenon between photographers and models; a weird game of sex and ego. Stop trying to come off like the sober voice of popular opinion.

Yeah you are, dude.

Why else would you be posting here? I mean, sure, you're not trying to get validation and approval for your art--which, again, I suspect is because you don't actually make any, but might just be because you believe that the photos you take aren't that great and you're afraid of people laughing at you--but you're clearly posting in the hopes that someone else will agree with your trolling and join in.

You're desperately bullying other people in the hopes that someone will be your bullying-buddy and give you validation and approval through that. My guess is because your mommy and daddy didn't give you much love and attention as a child so you internalized that the best way to get people to pay attention to you was to throw tantrums and act out against the other children.

And hey, it looks like it worked, assuming any of these comments are people other than you: >>3761767 >>3761774 >>3761786. Or maybe those are just... you, pretending to be a second person, agreeing with yourself, which is just about the saddest thought that's ever popped into my head, so let's hope that's not a trio of little (You)s up there.

Either way, I've already engaged with the trolling too much, so I'll let you have the last word after this. I hope the little win gives you some fleeting twinge of joy and happiness.

I love the model's expression and pose. I feel like I would've liked it more if you'd exposed for the positive, but I'm not sure--I might like the weird look you get from the polaroid negative.

>>3761486
>>3761490
Digging the soft fall vibes. My only criticism is that you framed juuuust a tiny bit too tight--first one has her elbow kissing the edge of the frame (with a lot more empty on the other side, which makes it feel a little unbalanced), and the second cuts off her fingers at the bottom.

>>3761513
>>3761514
When shooting a cosplayer with a cosplay gun, tell them not to put their finger on the trigger unless they're posing like they're actually about to shoot something. Otherwise, gun people will whine about trigger discipline. I guess I'm whining about trigger discipline here, too, but I'm only whining about it because I've seen so many other people whining about it.

Location and lighting are great. I'm assuming off-camera flash based on the ISO and location, but it looks very natural. I'd have done blood on only one cheek, but that's more a critique of the cosplay than the photography.

>>3761647
Melvin's out of focus despite being the person in the foreground. Ideally, you'd want to get both of them in the depth of field, but if you have to pick one, pick the front. You seem to have missed both of them, though (or it might just be because they're laughing and your shutter speed is a little too low--either way, the faces are both blurred).

Also, the gum in both of their mouths is a little distracting, and Belle isn't looking towards the camera.

>>3761719
Really dig this one. Would be better without the crease lines on the sheet.

>>3761756
I dunno, this one doesn't really speak to me. Maybe more eye contact, or a more natural-looking pose than tippie-toes-near-the-window would improve it?

I'm pretty sure the nudity is used to give a sense of intimacy with the viewer or display vulnerability. The photographer and viewer can get different feelings from it, but then there's also people that just go "dude boobs lol".

A man asking to see or photograph a woman naked is more socially acceptable than a man asking another man to be photographed naked, since most guys that would do it would likely be gay, which automatically adds a sexual element. A straight guy is very very unlikely to want to be photographed by another man. Hell, I think a lot of guys would even be uncomfortable being photographed naked by a woman. Men are on the whole pretty uncomfortable with their own nudity and being seen by others.

I think human beings just have an intrinsic draw to sexuality cause well, sex is the reason any of us are alive in the first place. There's even greater historical accounts of just how much we put young, fertile women on a pedestal (notice that all of the portraits here are women, and all are young and pretty). Here, we make jokes about coomers and booba, but in reality we unironically do have an immediate reaction to these photographs, we LIKE to see naked women. Women probably want to get photographed nude because a flattering photograph of her naked affirms that she's attractive and desirable in the raw, evolutionary, instinctual way that people are attracted to others. To put it no other way, they're just the default, conventional attractive that people want to look at, hence the photography itself is desired. Same reason that your photo of a sunset will get guaranteed likes on social media, even though it's not pushing any boundaries or is a particularly deep or technically challenging image.
>>

I don't think you're a bad photographer. I think you're a decent to good photographer who wastes his energy and talent on generic coomstock.

If that is what floats his boat then good for him, it is not your place to try and tell him he is wasting is time and talent.

Personally I think people who wank off over 'art' while dismissing anything that doesn't fit their own narrow definition of it are wasting their time and talent. But if that is what brings them satisfaction then I'm happy to leave the to it.

Okay, you're agreeing with me here. That's the root of my complaint. It's lame and trope-y to shoot nudes on the whole, in my honest O. I also find it frustrating because it feels like an attempt on the part of the photographer to bribe me into positively evaluating their work. In doing this they devote "space" in the aesthetics of an image to superfluous nonsense intended to distract, which could have been better provided for something else.

are we supposed to play where's waldo with the focus?
>>
>>3763392
Looks to me like she's in focus, it's just ridiculously low resolution so everything looks a little blurry.

It's possible I'm mistaken, but the parts of her in the foreground look as sharp as the stuff in the background to me, which implies that everything's sufficiently within the depth of field to work well and the blurriness is just from lack of pixels.
>>
what is photography
>>
>>3761821
Fun expression. I feel like the model's face looks a bit too purple--not sure if that's, like, sunburn or if you shot it on Velvia or Ektar or something that fucks with skin colors. Or maybe she's just like that.

>>3761997
Love this one. Love the soft look and the intimate feel. I'd have heal-tooled out the two bumps on her face, but I still really like the shot as is.

>>3761999
This one's good too, although I find the slight technical flaws in this one distracting (i.e., looks a smidge underexposed, or possibly just the shadows were brought up too much in the scanning process, and her eye doesn't look quite in focus. Might just be slight motion blur, though)

>>3762424
Not bad, but I think your sister is looking sliiiightly too far out of frame and it's a little too much of an up-nose angle. Face-foward-eyes-away is a good combo, but the idea is to create a little coyness, a little bit of a "What is she looking at?" mystery, but this just looks more like she's actively trying not to look at you. Like if you walked into the room with your dick out.

What I've found works well is to hold up your hand and tell your model to follow it with their eyes, then tell them to hold when their eyes are where you want them.

>>3762519
I feel like the crop is a bit too severe, and you didn't quite get his (your?) eyeball in focus. Plus I agree with >>3762638 that it's a bit too green.

>>3762544
Dig this one. I like the symbolism of the asian lady blowing smoke like a dragon, although that miiiight be racist of me to read it that way.

>>3762836
I like this one better than the window pic, but not as much as the op pic. I think straight-on makes her face look a little more square than is ideal; a slight sideways turn (with her eyes still facing the camera) would have improved it.
>>
>>3762875
Good framing and pose. Would've been improved by the model's eye turned a little bit towards camera so we can see that she has irises/pupils, but still good.

The pose builds a little motif of dark triangles demarcated by her white skin and the edges of the frame, which I quite like.

>>3763030
Neat location and the pose looks good. Would prefer, as I implied >>3763398, some more pixels. Looks like you downloaded this off of Facebook and Facebook raped your image quality.

>>3763295
Looks like something cost you a little sharpness--not sure if that's a focus issue, a camera shake issue, or a lens issue, but it's an issue. Everything looks a smidge blurry.

I'm also not thrilled about putting his foreground eyeball in the shadow of his nose. If you're going for a dark-and-mysterious look by putting the face in partial silhouette, you need to really lean into it and own it. As it is, it just looks like you put your flash in an unflattering spot.

Pose is fine (if a bit basic. Fine for a headshot), just the lighting needs work.

Was it shot recently? If so, the color shift might also be because it's expired--NPC 160 has been discontinued for about 16 years now (unless you meant Pro 160S or Pro 160NS).

>>3763475
>How would you light it?
I mean, the 100% candid answer in my heart of hearts would be "Also pretty badly, probably".

But most likely, I'd have the light higher up and more towards the front of his face so it didn't cast such a big shadow from his nose. If I wanted the front half of his face in shadow, I'd angle the flash such that the whole side of his face is blocked from the light by the other side of his face instead of there being plenty of light on the parts of his face that aren't hidden behind his nose.

Pic related--Softboxed flash from camera-right so it still feels very directional, but the camera-left side of her face is all in shadow vs. the camera-right side (except a little bit on her eye--like I said, the true answer is that I'm not an expert with off-camera lighting myself either)

I've been using the Yongnuo YN600EX-RTs (and Yongnuo's corresponding hot shoe trigger). If you've got a Canon system, it's fully compatible with their radio trigger setup, and it's been a lot more reliable than any of the remote triggers I've used that aren't built into flashes.

Dunno if they work on non-Canon systems.

That's actually uncropped. Shot it with a 6x6 medium format camera.

> blue due to the reflection of her background
It's actually blue due to the reflection on the whole goddamn room--that was shot in a hotel where every room has a full-room color theme, so basically everything in there was blue. And I'm not 100% on this, but I think that's the shoot where I couldn't find my normal (non-shoot-through) soft box, so I was using a white shoot-through umbrella on my light and it was bouncing a lot more blue into my lighting than I'd have preferred.

well they're not so special...doesn't mean they're bad...not at all
just intereseting documentary photos and clean work especially....the red cast isn't bad at all but i'd still do a color correction on them

Red color is the result of use of Kodak Aerocolor 125, they were meant to be such red. It's true that Portra would be a better solution in terms of colors, but red color palette also gives them some nostalgic look
>>
>>3768510
also forgot to say, you're on a good path anon
keep shooting portraits like this, still life

you're thinking that it's going to look more faithful without color correction straight off the scanner

and you're wrong.
>>
>>3768530
Faithfull to what lmao
>>
>>3768530
i'm not, Aerocolor is just not good for such purpose - too many artifacts and burnt colors would be a result of editing such film scans, Especially in JPEG of old lab's Noritsu scanners. As I said - Portra is more suitable for digital color correction, with Aerocolor one should work with development techniques and other analog ways to correct colors. And I'm just a poorfag who buys the film for satellite maps to make portraits
>>
>>3768549
disregard the fag, they are very nice.

>you're thinking that it's going to look more faithful without color correction straight off the scanner
He explicitly said he's not going for faithful color reproduction.

what about a portrait of a cat

This thread: >>3761099 (now archived) inspired me to pull out my stereoscopic lens again.

Look at this shot fullscreen and with your eyes crossed and it'll be in 3D. Either that or it'll just be a blur and you'll give yourself a headache; I've found it's about 50/50 whether or not a given person can do it.

Portra is not more suitable to digital color correction you just desperately want to believe that the photos you posted look anything like Aerocolor.

thanks man i've still trying to get a more repeatable editing style locked down for like what I want to see color wise and what the models want...
>>
>>3768609
Anons, how do I get chicks like this to bang me?
>>
>>3768606
But they do, I buy Aerocolor 125 from slav reseller called Sreda, who packs the stocks in a way CineStill makes it in USA, by the name of SFL Aerocolor 125. I guess they might have made some changes with it like CineStill removes some layers in production of 800D
>>
>>3768609
They are fucking neat, what are you using ?

>>3768597
I can't get the 3D effect to work, you should maybe do a fast gif with these
