Last thread reached bump limit

Remember: PRICE FOR ENTRY IS A PORTRAIT THAT YOU YOURSELF SHOT. anyone else will be treated as a bitter, nophoto, nocamera, larper.

How about we start compiling some resources on lighting & technique? Model poses? Location & background selection? I want to head a header/sticky going.

Instagram.

The quickest way to do this is to ask a female friend of yours to go and take photos, then when you send em the pictures, you ask them to put something like "Hey! My friend is looking for people to photograph for a project of his, it's free so hit him up!" in the caption of one of the photos or a story with the picture and that written.

People will 100% hit you up, then you can choose the ones you want to shoot with from your dms and the ones you don't, you can just be like "Hey! I'm a bit overwhelmed at the response, it's a lot more than I expected so currently I already have all the spots lined up for the month. But when I'm a bit more free, I'll hit you up".
Then you work with the ones you want to and don't talk to the ones you curved lol.

You take photos of the new people, they post, tag you, more people see your work, other people message you and from there you start building your network.

Don't worry too much on the quality of the pictures at first, it's a free shoot after all. Most people will be happy with the pictures as they're already a step up.

>>3743832
You still need some sort of modicum of a people's portfolio on Instagram and website for you to do free tests. Unless you're paying the model's day rate for a shoot.

You will hardly get proper traction from people posting your photos, but when you're offering free shoots, people will swarm you for a spot.
But it's all about shooting with people and then talking with them about kinds of people you want to shoot, like "Hey do you have any red haired friends who would be down to shoot?".

Once you get the ball going, it's super easy to keep it going.

The three photos all feel like different photos to me. The first is warmer given the sun is actually hitting her, and the second she is in a shaded area.
Maybe warm the second photo up and make it a bit brighter (not the shadows).

I'd also warm up her arms and legs in the first pic, just so it matches her head. She'll look healthier.

There is more shadow on her face (make up too) vs her arm, so her skin complexion is darker (and more contrasty) on the face than on her arms, where it's more washed out due to the light.
Her arms are also probably washed out by the light leak or whatever filter is popping in from the bottom and sides.

You could burn her arms a bit to get the complexion richer and then a transparent layer set to color, a color brush (color pick her face color) set to 20/20 (opacity/flow and 0 hardness), and paint over her arm until it matches a bit better.
Then set the opacity of the transparent layer to like 80% so it blends better. This is like, the quickest way to match skin color on different parts of the body.

>>3744361
Much better skin wise, although too bright.

Here's a quick edit of the second one, dialed the highlights back a bit and brought some color back to her skin as well. and more contrast to the bottle.

Great shot and probably a technical challenge that is not noticed by many. I wanted to ask how you didn't overexpose the flames and then I saw the sensor pattern of underexposure and post-processing push ;) That's the thing I love about the A7iii, a 3 stop push from a proper exposure is hardly a problem.

You could avoid that pose for scrawny dudes, or you could also loosen up the jeans to make it seem larger.
If you look at the pic, the fabric is tucked in under his leg cause of the position. Tuck it out and see if it's look okay, if not, change poses and etc.

Yep. The Canon sensor doesn't handle underexposure nearly as well as Sony sensors do. But, on the flip side, shooting with a Canon doesn't make me want to throw my camera against a wall in frustration. So there's a give and take.

Friendly reminder that portraiture is the second lowest form of photography. A “peasant’s painting”was the original purpose of the medium, and to continue that tradition of the face of so many other meaningful possibilities is regressive in its most extreme. Portrait photographers are the fish that stayed in the water when everyone else threw themselves on land and forged forward.

So where is you “actual” portraiture anon?

You do have subjects to shoot, right?
>>
>>3745398
I keep seeing this brag in the portrait threads. "WHAT'S A MATTER BRUH CAN'T GET CHICKS NAKED LIKE I CAN" It's very strange, considering you retards are only shooting people who specifically asked and agreed to be photographed. These are people who WANT to be in front of a camera. There's no challenge or talent required. You aren't paving new ground, you're just retreading the same old commerce-inspired tropes that have existed since your grandparents were toddlers. It bums me the fuck out, really.
>>
>>3745395
That's most likely a girl, which means she's immune to the "can't talk to girls" insult
Maybe your photos are just boring mid 2000s aesthetic tripe
>>
>>3745401
It's projection. Most of them genuinely think they've triumphed over their younger incel years, being 4chan users after all, because damaged capitalists consented to being photographed by them.
>>
>>3745401
So that’s a no then? No subjects? No portraits? Just, hanging out, shiposting in a photography thread. Must be nice.
>>
>>3744592
Okay, this is pretty fucking good.
>>
>>3745406
I haven't shot any portraits since Covid started because now is not the time for it, not because I can't take pictures of people.

Taking pictures of people (this is not actually a portraiture thread, few images here convey character, this is merely a "pictures of people" thread where people champion their recent overcoming of their social anxiety) is simply not that exciting or interesting, most people take perfectly adequate selfies that possess more self-expression and character, and that is where the future of "portraiture" lives; not in some facsimile of 80s fashion industry and SuperShots photos.
>>
>>3745411
So that’s a no then? No portraits to share? Just a bunch of projection about being an incel?

A portrait should convey some internal truth about that person, even if its some Herzogian ecstatic truth. It is not just a "picture of a person" It is especially not photos that have been draped in the lighting patterns of commercial photography to better sell a "product". It is not just pretty girls in various states of disrobe, despite what the coomtographer will have you believe.

If you retouch to remove blemishes, it's not a portrait, it's a product photo.
If you try hard to only convey the most beautiful aspect of your subject, it's a product photo.

If your photo is honest, unflinching, beautiful, bare, it's a portrait.
>>
>>3745721

Oh, and here are some examples:

Here is Annie Leibovitz, who OCCASIONALLY shoots a portrait, but more often shoots product photos like this.
>>
>>3745726
That's a portrait. Are you acting as a retard on purpose?

This is Thomas Struth's portrait of the royal couple. It's product versus person, fantasy versus reality. Annie's photo says literally nothing, while this single photo says more about monastic power and the British empire than a thousand strained essays.

This is what you should strive for with your work. It should be a document of truth and insight. You don't have to make your photos unflattering for them to be truthful, but to hide unflattering aspects makes you a goddamned fucking liar.
>>
>>3745729

>>

>>3745730
They're both portraits, dumbass. That's not even a discussion. You'd have to be fucking crazy artist to argue against taht.

>>3745726
Is actually a lot the better of the two. More real, more gritty. Flattering glow light on the Queen in fabulous royal dress contrast with harsh tones of the background. Glitter in the mirror, glitter on the painting, clutter in all around, they're dark, in the shadows, moody. Background is there to tell you stories. All is not what it seams.

>>3745730
Generic lowdof portrait. Put subject in front of the widow and press shutter.
>>
>>3745738
I'm having fun imagining your two brain cells working themselves into a froth trying to justify how Annie Leibovitz is a better photographer than Thomas Struth. You seem upset, did I somehow intuit an ethical gap in your own photography?

I considered that, but decided in the end that I preferred having it so you could see where the light was coming from a little bit so it had that nice natural-light look (which was a partial lie, because it was *actually* mainly lit by a softbox'd flash near the window because the window wasn't giving me as much light as I wanted).

>Good lighting, I'd clean up the bruises on her legs though.

Hey thanks for looking fren. The lighting wasn’t very well done on my part for a few reasons, but it was two profoto heads, without modifiers. One bare bulb head, pointed straight up, directly in front of me, cstand touching my inner right knee. The head is raised to roughly eight feet. There is a second bare bull head camera left, a foot or so in front of subject, hitting the wall behind me acting as a large fill. Light spills and blows out her right arm a bit, could have fixed it, didn’t care.

I don't think I agree with this (and I'm the guy who posted >>3753621). I think the calmness of the scene contrasting with the implication of the red lines radiating out from her neck works well conceptually.

It just kinda feels like a really well-cooked dish that's missing just a dash of salt somewhere. Something that'll take it from "Hey, yeah, this is pretty good, I like this" to "HOLY SHIT OH MY GOD YES".

I hate just tearing someone down, but:
1. The expression reads, to me, as... Faintly annoyed? Disappointed? Impatient? Were any of those what you were going for?
2. Suburban backyard fence isn't the best choice for a backdrop for this sort of shoot.
3. She looks like she's missing a hand. I apologize if she's legitimately missing a hand and that's not just an issue with your posing.
4. The one little *boop* of hot-pink nail polish is distracting me. Which is ironic, because I never notice that sort of thing when taking pictures myself, which is one of my own failings.
5. Maybe the faintly annoyed expression is because you made her carry a rose and she doesn't want to be responsible for that? Because she doesn't seem to be doing anything with that to particularly enhance this scene. It's just kinda there.
6. She has a bit of a wide face, which I think would look better in 3/4 profile than straight-on.
7. Oof, as soon as I zoomed in, I realized it's not even a real rose. The specular highlights from your lighting setup are really bringing out the plasticness of it.

I'm on an actual computer. Depth of field goes all the way through the scene--I.e., the front of the chair and the back of the chair are both sharp, so the model in the middle is sharp as well.

The photo appears to be fairly low resolution, which is making her look a little blurry, so you're probably responding to that.

Just light a candle and say his name three times when importing into Lightroom and he'll show up in the background of all of your photos.

Just whatever you do, don't say his name *four* times.

This is fugging great, exposure/colors/comp all on point. Just too bad he has a blank expression on his face and looking into nowhere.
If it weren't for that, this could totally pass for an ad or portrait piece alongside the third.

I feel like the pose with left (right) arm is weird, looks awkward and his arm disappears. Would be stronger in a different pose.

Boring lighting for the concept, feels like test shots you did to check something.

>>3754370
After reading the Morticia Addams background, it seems better, but I feel like you could have used a reflector or something to at least give some detail on the clothes she's wearing.
Also ease up on certain colors, like her lipstick which are clipped red (compare them to flower too). You could have gotten a better result shooting her facing the sun and the background also in shadow.

Oh, he's blind, is he? That's why he's wearing a KISS t shirt then.
Just kidding, I liked that picture. It conveys what it is supposed to convey, although it woudl have worked better as an horizontal photo. Cutting the guitar out doesn't do it justice, imo.

Eyes and faces are slightly out of focus, also cannot understand the reason why of the poses you chose to make her do. In the first picture what was that hand supposed to mean? Blocking the camera? Reaching for it? Can't tell and furthermore it's distracting.
In the last picture the hand above her forehead kills everything. You were probably going for a "framework look" but I don't think it works, not this way at least.

>>3758422
Lights are a bit burned on the left side of the face? Maybe? Otherwise good, this one makes sense. Very expressive and beautiful eyes. I would have left a bit more space above her head but that's ok anyway.

Also I'm not the biggest fan of square format
>>
>>3758441
Thanks for the info man. I'm just trying new poses, i had to use square format because i did some shots with my film camera and i messed up with the flash sync, and were half burned.

Thank you so much for your opinion on these man, it's hard to find real costructive criticism, much appreciated
>>
>>3758502
You're welcome, and don't worry, stuff like this happens all the time.
Are you shooting with a tripod? If not, you should. If yes, take your time to never shoot out of focus pictures again, tripod helps a lot in studio photography. That is one thing you can start doing correctly right now, without the need to learn anything new, it only takes some patience and attention.

Hey guys new to this, so this might be a dumb question.
But do portraits need to include the face?
I ask because they say hands can tell a lot about people, so I wanted to do "portraits" based on that idea.
