I love shots of children playing together with their neighbours in the safety of their street.
It brings back a nostagia which has been lost in the west.

In my town when you to outside in the evening, you no longer see any children playing together.
They are all inside their home connecting with their online friends on their tablets.

Kinda shocked to be honest, even the underground here in London is more modern.

The other thing that always weirds me out with NK is how empty most of the streets are. You've got all these massive roads and pavements, monolithic architecture, and only a handful of people and even less cars visible. Really makes me wish it was possible to get out of the designated tourist area and see the other parts of the city and countryside, get a better picture of what daily life is really like there.

Roads were designed to rapidly deploy tanks, troops and materiel, not to accommodate privately owned cars. Likewise streets are for going from point A to point B, not to leisurely stroll them while being unproductive.
>>
>>3508875
Really? that's interesting, I always heard they were super anal about what you're allowed to shoot and which people end up in your shot.
Maybe they're trying to make it feel more welcoming to tourists to improve their image?
Either way, great thread OP.

It seems like their whole economy is switching to tourism. All the tourist places looked great, factories not so much. I think the new Kim wants to open up, soon.

Pic related, the ski resort.

>>
>>3508641
Mixed feelings desu.
Coming from an ex-commie country I'm convinced that whatever you see has been consciously and carefully put there to manipulate what you think about the country. Commie regimes always go to extreme lengths to charm young people abroad, just like the CCCP used to do with american college students in the 60s and 70s.
So I'm pretty sure they would prop up an entire city like Pyongyang and let the best goys live there as long as they act really happy and make sure to always play outside, etc. for show.
But I also know how dishonest and deceptive western media is, and how it hates anything traditional. I know how predatory western capitalism is and how it wants to expand and consume everything. So from that perspective it makes perfect sense that they would smear the country, get their own citizens to boycott and sanction it, and thus try to pressure it into participating in the globalist free market.
It's almost impossible to tell what life looks like there for the average person outside of these touristy areas, but if I had to guess it's probably similar to what my parents experienced growing up. There was definitely scarcity and you had to wait weeks for certain imported goods like bananas, stuff like good quality clothes had a really high value and you pretty much bought them for life, public utilities were shitty and you didn't have a ton of entertainment outside of two TV channels and old books. Society wasn't "innocent" anymore because the memories of post war brutal communism were still lingering, but for the most part it was a pretty safe and simple life. It was culturally and ethnically coherent and you didn't feel this overwhelming sense of being isolated in a crowd of people.
So on one hand I'm sceptical about the comfy utopia feel that your shots convey, but I also feel melancholy for the inevitable destruction of their way of life when they get colonised and corrupted and end up just as degenerate and soulless as SK.

I saw plenty of poor people in the villages. I saw them having no running water and electricity. I saw them use oxen to plow the fields, and the run-down factories. Sure, they are mostly showing you the nice parts, but these tours span the whole country, you're not just sitting in one road in pyongyang.
>>
>>3509506
I also think you're pretty much spot-on about your guess about the life of normal people.
>>
>>3509228
>Kinda shocked to be honest, even the underground here in London is more modern.
Most trains and trams here are modern as well, but I'm just saying it's not a big deal to have old rolling stock. You said it like it's something that's totally 3rd world tier. Trains have a theoretical useful life of 30-40 years. In Milan they have 90 year old trams in regular operation. In Buenos Aires they retired 99 year old subway trains a few years ago. In Berlin they had some suburban trains in operation for around 80 years. Both Philadelphia and Boston each have a tram line with cars from the 1940s in regular service.
>>
Bit mehish to be honest, and very touristy. The only one that really captivated me was propaganda advert, and even that was because that add.

There's a guy on some train forum that went there outside official channels. Just boarded rusky train that still goes there and they let him in at the border. Magnificent reportage, he's captured some heart and soul in his shots.

Thanks for the critique, I think you're right about most of it. Sadly, this was the only lens I had with me and I hadn't really used it too much, so some of the shots are less than optimal. This was a guided tour with a tight schedule, so for many shots there was just one chance. That's why I post so much stuff that's out of focus, sadly. Anyway, this is not to excuse the quality, just to explain it.

I heard the Russian govt was supposed to work with them to install underground pipelines that would help alleviate the gas shortage in NK but only if they could strike a deal that doesn't annoy the south and the USA. They could solve the heating issues but it's a HUGE project as the lines would have to run for great distances to reach NK
>>
>>3511330
what other issues does nk face? why dont they just invest in solar? what ever happened to that ski park they built?
>>
>>3511335
Well there's generally an energy issue. Most areas outside the capital lack stable energy and gas as mentioned before. Even in the capital electricity is throttled. There was a satellite image that showed the difference of the Korean peninsula at night and you could see how widespread the darkness was on the northern side especially what would be considered the rural areas.
Besides that, as far as land development goes there have been a lot of construction projects over the years but they wind up unfinished or finished and empty shells to be used by the rare tourist group or elites who can afford. It was similar to when Chinese developers in the mid-late 2000s built massive new apartments but couldn't fill them because most could not afford it simply.
Where food is concerned, the Chinese sends food and fuel and while some food is locally grown, the land isn't really suitable for growing a lot of crops/keeping livestock. In the south there are much more pig farms etc
The south has a reunification fund but basically it would be like straining the south Korean economy to build up the north's infrastructure IF they did some day become one nation again.

He probably went to the Rason special economics zone, which is kind of a free market experiment zone bordering china and russia.

There's also a new international airport being built in wonsan, but at the moment the normal route is beijing-pyongyang

It will likely never be finished either, sadly. I was there two years ago, and we had an architect on the tour. He said something about if it hasn't been finished by now, something is so fundamentally wrong with it it isn't worth it. You could blame it on the harsh economy/funding running out, but i'm prepared to believe the guy's judgement.

They can just call it Juche Tower 2 and leave it like it is. Or, let the Chinese fix it.

The Government of the United States is one of the most objectively evil entities of the modern world, killing and indirectly ruining the lives of millions
>>

Well you are technically a very bad and evil country.

For example even now you still have sanctions against Russia and forbidding all of your European slaves to trade with Russia, just because Pentagon was butthurt about what happened in Syia.
This tantrum alone has caused misery, suffering and made your european "allies" lose billions in export to Russia.

And it's not just Russia of course.
You have your dirty tentacles everywhere and forbidding tons of other countries from trading, like Iran and Myanmar, and parts of China.

The other guy is right. Your country IS Objectively the evil of the planet.

And I'm not even talking about your wars.
You are the one country who is telling others they are not allowed to trade food and goods with other countries.

North Korea is just one of many victims on your list. They are a sovereign Nation, but you are the one showing up with your battleships and denying them the ability to purchase and sell to other countries in the world.

You did the exact same thing to Japan in the 1930's.
You surrounded them with your battleships and told them they are not allowed to purchase oil.
And you are doing this to many others today.

They don't hate you because of your wars.
They hate you because you are telling who they can and can't trade with.

Like right now, I'll go to your house and blockade you, and forbid you from trading with your local supermarkets and other shops in your town, let's see how that makes you feel.

Our navy is even larger than yours.
We just fill them up with containers for commerce, instead of installing turrets and missiles on them.

Yes Anon I'm one of those who want you dead as soon as possible so the rest of the planet can finally trade freely with each other.

At the end of the day, you are the shithead who has cost us Billions in export to Russia and Iran.
