A friend of mine made a wise move shortly before highschool's end

>buddy is good at most kind of visual art
>draws in paper everyday
>paints in canvas almost every week
>wins a couple of awards in highschool
>gets hired by the municipality to do some murals every now and then
>buddy is even good at photography even though he doesn't have his own camera
>everybody expects him picking a graphic design career in college
>buddy chooses criminal law

He said that painting is his passion but that he doesn't want to live out of that because it would feel more and more like work and he doesn't want that. He works now and uses that to finance his passion. Think about if you need to do your passion to live, maybe you don't, but that doesn't mean you have to leave it.

>hostile
It only gets like that when people refuse to accept constructive criticism and try to justify bad technique/composition/editing as an artistic expression. The autistic pedants screech as anon digs himself into a deeper hole.

Post a few photos you like here and there in relevant threads, even the rpt. What you'll find is:
>"good" photos will be ignored mostly
>"bad" photos may generate some critique
>"excellent" photos well, that's a mixed bag
In general don't be disheartened if your favourite photo gets no (you)s, it means you're on the right track.

If you are thinking about making a thread, edit the set down to the best 12-18 photos. It's best to have a theme or at least a consistent style. Photos that didn't make the cut can be used for replies and further info.

I've only ever made one thread. It was fun and confirmed my suspicions about most of the shots. I should do another.

I have a friend who's huge into film photography. He's a big traveller and has been all through Aftica, South America, Southeast Asia, Oceania, taking tens or hundreds of thousands of photos.

I was helping him pack up to move around the same time I was getting into film photography. I saw he had mountains of film in storage boxes and didn't think he'd notice if I pinched some to use. So I took like 40 rolls of film and stashed them in a drawer at home. Like a month later I realized they were all exposed rolls he put back in the boxes, from all his adventures. He's always about 8 years behind in developing all his film so who knows what era or continent these would have been from. I was so ashamed to tell him I stole his film that I threw them all away.

imo, go for computer science, and buy books about photography and check free tutorials.

A degree in computer science could be very useful. Also the knowledge, and more importantly the guys and gals you met studying that could help you or inspire you to find new and clever ways to mix both things, so yo could create more unique art projects which in turn could help you be more succesful doing photo without giving up one thing for the other.

imo M > other modes + avoiding lens autofocus.

other modes are just good for only very specifi and non-flexible styles.

Also, you can only learn M by toying with M: direct feedback in dslr
>>
>>3512011
not him but I do agree that mastering M is a necessary step in becoming proficient, but at the end of it all M is the least efficient mode. 90% of my tography is at night, usually long exposures, and M is the only way to go, but if you're on a hike or hitting the streets trying to shoot cheeky opportunities M is often to slow and it's just kind of a headache. You gotta have a good feel and sensibility for A if you want to get decent togs on the fly.

>>3509741
If you never print your photos and you're having fun don't buy anything. Avoid tumbling down the gear acquisition hole as long as possible. Maybe try getting a camera app that lets you have more control and work on mastering that.

I confess that I paid $200 for a pinhole camera, even though I easily could have made one myself. I bought a Zero Image 2000 because it's so aesthetic. I've been having boatloads of fun with primitive photo tech and really only enjoy using pinholes, large format, etc. It seems like the more inconvenient and expensive the process is, the more I enjoy it. I'm worried I'm going to start getting into retarded shit like salt printing and wet plates. I already have so much photo crap - I don't need any more.

I have a huge insecurity about my sensor size. It's too small, but it's all I have. I am afraid to show it to women.

>Hitler painted.
Yes he did, he sold tourist scenes while homeless. He was rejected by the local academy for being a bit shit. I believe this was one of the catalysts for his mental state, more so than his experiences in WWI or the death of his Mother. Classic narcissist who needed to blame/punish his critics for not realising his genius.

Fast forward a couple of decades and the "Art Establishment" had fled Germany, replaced by graphic designers who would indulge his whims.

I understand the present popular rejection of "progressive" Art but hasn't this always been the case? I'm a WASP so I don't get gallery gigs, I do get the odd paid jobs for being competent tho.

Despite using it (and many other formats), I don't understand the appeal of full frame.
If I want something pocketable, then either an APS-C like the X-T30 or a mft like the E-M1 II or G9 is more appealing, especially the mft due to the more potent IBIS and smaller lenses that make it super easy to pocket the camera with a lens on and to carry other lenses around in another pocket.
While the camera body of some full frame cameras (like the A7III) can be of similar size, with a lens on it can't fit in your pocket if you want anything other than the 50mm or some of the 85mms. So it ends up being something that either needs to be worn or carried. If I was going to trade portability for image quality, I'd just buy a GFX100.
Full frame seems like a weird sofabed.

Then you're an idiot... do you also not understand the appeal of anything else that doesn't fit in your pocket?
>>
>>3516113
He's saying if you're going to wear it on a strap anyway why not go medium format instead of FF
>>
>>3516115
Because they serve completely different purposes and the weight and price difference is also greater between the two. Much more than aps-c vs ff.

That's like asking why someone wouldn't choose a dump truck over a pickup truck because they are both trucks.

Sure is true. The course was basically full of expensive Canon shills where their criticism was "don't like that." There's plenty of that here but also plenty of criticism of how to improve.

I love compacts and am seriously considering upgrading to one of these even though it looks like something a teenage girl would be equipped with.
I also don't even look in the general direction of what I'm shooting about half the time, I just spray and pray.

The original Fuji x100 is probably the best camera Ive ever bought.

It got me taking more photos because it was fun to use and forced me to slow down my workflow and be more deliberate.

Ive taken my best photos with this $200 camera than my 8k worth of pro-gear I use for work. I refuse to admit it in even with friends and colleagues.

..it also got me laid no less that 5 times to chicks waaay above my league, art hoes with rockin bodies and qt photography tourists
