I like going /out/ but I can't fucking sleep when I'm out there by myself. I get all anxious and I end up only sleeping a few hours a night. I understand rationally that in most/all of the places I go I'm the most dangerous thing for miles in any direction; I'm not in Alaska or bear country; but it just doesn't translate to being able to fucking relax when I tuck in. I'll get halfway to sleep and then one of pic related will happen and I'm up for another hour.

Is there any trick to dealing with this or do I just need to get used to it?

Sorry to suggest drugs are a solution but these work for me in the city and out innawoods: 1) melatonin, Life Extension, and 2) Kalm waka loa kava, fijian root. I'm a lousy sleeper as it is, but this combination of drugs work for me even in coastal brown bear territory where because I'm a soloist I tend to be hyperalert. Spanking the monkey can help as can herbal tea.

I guess a tube of lotion isn't that much of a weight addition. What herbal teas do you recommend? Just dunk some pine needles in hot water?

Serious question, how comfy is your sleeping system? If you're on a foam pad and you're used to a plush pillow top, you need more exhaustion until you're used to it.

In spite of image I actually use a hammock mostly and it feels pretty comfy to me. I use a blanket on top, occasionally an unzipped sleeping bag as a makeshift top quilt, but I have an underquilt too. No pillow. I am doing the diagonal thing where my feet are on one side of the ridgeline and my head is on the other.

The hammock might be part of it though. You're always hanging up where you're pretty easy to spot and your back is exposed.

That was my problem, I learned to head out very early so by the time I get everything set up for the night and the food cooking I was exhausted, food hit my belly and I was out like a light. I suppose it would be different if you have a designated spot you know that you are going to camp at and you reach it with little or no effort.

Try a thin pillow. Might have a closer feel to home. Also try fiddling with the hammock angles. Played around with mine this summer and had a much better sleep with shorter ridgeline even though it felt fine for naps.

I'd actually recommend against tea, by the time you drink enough to actually matter there's a good chance you'll wake up in the middle of the spoopy night to pee and have to restart the sleeping process all over again

I take ambien before bed when I camp, but I also make sure to be really active by cutting/splitting wood, hiking, etc because >>2646774
