gold is an excellent color
I broke my gold xr12 haven't gotten around to replacing them in a while, feels like a few years. since before covid.
actually gold xr12 and sxr14 in gold both bought the farm. One of the two of them it was just the bill. The other one (I think it was the xr14?) actually broke in half.
Despite those losses, and price increases, and a few other losses of typically the same problems: weight transfer stops working or bill breaks or plastic body cracks, I'm still a fan.
I'm looking forward to rapala mavik jerkbait. It's a proper gold. Also metallic perch and hot perch look great.
I also really like subwalk 09 in gold, when the grass is tall in August for pike and smallies

I have a couple old (15 years) very budget rods that my dad bought in rod and reel combos. I've since bought an Ugly Stik GX2, which is so much better, but I hear people say that Ugly Stik is a meme. >>
>>2646710
I think you have to learn when to let something go too.

I know a guy who dives all the time and spearfishes and he was out there for lobster one day and he was grabbing the lobster off his little pokin stick and a goliath grouper popped out of a hole and decided he wanted the lobster too. So the big ass grouper grabs the lobster and half his arm and he’s trying to fight the fish for a few seconds until he realizes he’s on a wild ride around the reef, and then finally decides to let go of the lobster and slip his hand out and gtfo.
>>
>>2646827
Dope.

Where are you at?

I remember one anon from Malaysia or something who was always impressed by our invasive FL sneks. I think they had the same species wherever he was, but it was rare to catch anything above like 12” because everybody targets them to eat.

Also invasive species also get larger than they do in their native places because easy meals and less predators.
>>
>>2646874

>>
>>2646965
Fenwick Eagle, any Abu Garcia that’s within your budget, some Daiwa and Lew’s rods probably. If you see a Bass Pro Johnny Morris rod on sale, those are nice for the money. The Ugly Stik is a meme because it’s floppy ass fiberglass and that’s sort of old tech but good for kids who will bend it around in tree branches or jam it into the ground and it won’t break. Pretty much any other $40+ rod is going to be some graphite composite blank that will have a good strong backbone and sensitive tip and they’re easier to flick lures while casting and better for getting the right action on the lure.

Look for something 6’6”-7’-3” that is medium weight with fast action.

>pigs aren’t tasty
Feral hogs are inedible because people tend to gut shoot them on the run in hot weather. Unless a feral hog is living at the dump (this does happen, and eating at the dump renders all shortgut game animals inedible), if you shoot it cleanly and dress it properly so you can chill it quick, it’ll be fine eating.

The problem is the attitude that people have about destructive invasives (and this extends to carp). They assign moral value to their existence and treat them poorly as a consequence, and then let the consequences of that poor treatment reinforce their moral low value.
And I’m not saying that they don’t need to be exterminated, because they do, but you’re not going to exterminate them by rolling in and killing half a sounder with poorly aimed rapid fire, so if you want to shoot hogs, why not shoot them in a way that preserves their value as meat?

Traps and exclusion barriers and elimination of refuge spaces is how you exterminate an invasive.

Wild hogs/feral pigs with some wild boar genetics, where they are rampant in the US south, have a reputation for carrying disease and being inedible above 50 lbs if male. They do carry a number of diseases that are functionally extinct in US domestic pork (brucellosis, etc), but someone educated to the precautions needed, who follows them, will have no problems, and the inedibility issue is a combination of delicate “chicken tendies” mass American palates and poor treatment of the hog as a meat animal due to the unconscious biases of the majority of people who hunt them.
It’s bad enough I’ve had IRL Texan “outdoorsmen” tell me that if you want to eat a wild hog, the only thing to do is shoot piglets or live trap them, neuter and worm them, and feed them corn in confinement for 6 months.

I’ve shot around a dozen over the last 5 years, and they were fine table fare (except the first three, which I fucked up by hunting in the manner that the locals hunt them, IE shooting several running pigs out of a spooked sounder). You just need to not treat meat like trash just because you’ve been told the animal is evil. After all, the locals have been using tannerite and machine guns to hunt them for 20 years and all they’ve done is create very cautious pigs. The problem is only getting worse because the people in charge of trying to manage the problem operate with their arms tied behind their back, and every township has a dipshit or 5 who creates pig sanctuary by being a belligerent about their property rights or who releases pigs in order to hunt them later. Of the dozen I’ve killed, the 4 largest had the characteristic poorly fused snout of an animal that reached maturity on a grain diet fed into a pan instead of rooting through dirt for tubers and insects like a wild pig. This isn’t a genetic feature, it’s developmental and entirely diagnostic of a dipshit making the feral hog problem in the area worse on purpose.

>go fishing yesterday
>decide to tie on my one jig head hare's ear on a whim
>throw it in a hole I know is alright
>pull out half a dozen fish in 10 minutes
>after it stops producing go to another spot
>first cast, good size brown trout immediately on
>it shakes the hook
>second cast, same exact thing
>third cast, same exact thing again
>eventually land a rainbow trout that inhaled the nymph pretty hard and it's near impossible to get it out even with forceps, just cut it loose
>catch like 2 fish for the rest of the day
>lose half a dozen flies in the trees
>get pissed and go home
that jig head hare's ear was blessed I tell you

my biggest bass was caught on an old rat l trap with dingy old gold base color similar to pic with a few brownish red stripes. The fish was 10+ lbs minimum. lake fork, tx.

I found out the Tilapia here don't eat corn and are horrified of anything that glitters even if it's way smaller than them.
I also found a micro crankbait that doesn't work.

you should use a smaller net
it would make the fish appear bigger

If I can see a bunch of minnows that basically means I shouldn't cast there right?
My thought process is that if there is something there big enough to be worth catching it would be eating them and scaring them away

Even modestly sized musky are wild AF. You get to Minnesota in October and I’ll get you out where a 54 incher is possible. As far as fresh water goes, Musky are as close to a good saltwater fight as it gets.
>>
>>2649046
>Musky are as close to a good saltwater fight as it gets.
Migratory stripers
>>
>>2649046
King salmon, sturgeon, stripers and mekong catfish are pound for pound stronger than a musky.

I'd say mekong's are #1. I've caught several chinooks in the 50 to 70 pound range when I lived in Alaska, and my 40 pound mekongs fought a lot harder. Chinooks were my #1 for freshwater for awhile, not anymore. Musky and striper don't beat a chinook.
>>
>>2649064
stripers are fun but as pelagics you can't always easily target them, at least from shore like i am
i just want something i can harvest and eat and regulations continue to get more strict
>>
>>2649069
Fuck I hear you. I fish in a lake for them (freshwater ones) and I can't even get them from shore. I hate it.

Ironically my striper friends who catch 20+ pounders frequently tell me striper fishing is easier than bass fishing. I disagree with them big time on that one, because I can't get a 15+ pounder to save my life LOL.

Btw to musky fishermen, I'm not saying musky are weak, far from it, they're in the top 10 strongest freshwater fish FOR SURE.
>>
>>2649070
i forget that there are freshwater places that stock stripers
i'm in massachusetts but a good hour drive from any saltwater, and it sucks to drive that far and not find them
anyone around here that fishes seriously but recreationally has a boat, because shore fishing is incredibly hit or miss, mostly miss
>>
>>2649064
As anadromous fish, I’d usually exclude king salmon and stripers (and the real pound for pound champions, steelhead) from the “freshwater” category, but I’ve caught 40 lb strippers in the Potomac and 40 lb musky in Minnesota lakes and I would say the musky were better fights. Although I will say that the stripers do hit harder initially.
I cannot speak to Mekong Catfish, but the only catfish I’ve caught which have pulled as much drag as a 40 lb musky have been flatheads and blues that were in the 70lb range.
Large sturgeon are also in the running for “hardest fighting freshwater”, but I still find muskelunge to be the most thrilling freshwater species I can target without flying across the world.

When drop-shotting with soft plastics, do you typically use a Palomar knot or would something like a surgeons loop offer more movement for the lure as it's slightly disconnected from the mainline?
Similar question if you're soaking bait, which one would you typically use?

With a drop shot typically it’s about a very subtle presentation with minimal movement. Using a surgeons loop will allow for extra action but may not work as well on pressured fish. Try both and see what works better for you on a given day

Did you bleed it immediately? IMMEDIATELY after catching a salmon or trout or anything in that family cut the gills and bleed it out thoroughly and the meat won't have such a strong low tide flavor.

Finally caught something decent after months of being dry
was also my first time trying my new ultralight setup
very fun to fight, never really had to actually let a fish pull like that before
also was kind of surprised a carp even went for my soft plastic crayfish on a jig setup, I thought you normally use corn or something actually edible for them
>>

Carp will eat anything, I once used sponge with fridge drippings on it and got a carp in a drainage ditch
>>

Yeah I brained and bled it immediately, maybe its diet in the great lakes or maybe the physiological changes of preparing to spawn might have caused the taste

Oh definitely once they're all kype jawed and humped up they're pretty bad eating unless you're smoking them and even then it's not 100%. Over here on the west coast in the columbia river they call the early in and ready to spawn salmon "tules" and they're horrible for food, not worth keeping.

What would be considered the "easiest" freshwater fish to catch in the southern US? I'm new to this and only managed to catch one fish the last five times I've gone out. I'm looking to build more confidence since I'm starting to feel like I'm just not gonna be good at this between getting skunked and tangling my line so much.

Bluegill. Get the following
>#8 aberdeen hook
>small assortment of split shot
>small bombers
>bait (worms, waxies, maggots, grasshoppers, minnows)
Tie the hook on, put a split shot 6-10 inches up, then a float 12-24 inches up, and cast at weed edges, docks, trees, or any other cover. If your bait sits more than 2 minutes without a bite, cast somewhere else. Sometimes moving your bait 10 feet and sometimes even less is what gets you bit.

Anyone had any experience with these?

I already own a rebel 100xp. Which is fine, but at the same time I'd like to have something with a bit more wiggle room. Also something more stable.

Main thing I see needing done to this thing is a scupper hole, which looks easy enough to mod with no issues if you go apeshit with marine sealant. Tarps are easy to get, too and a floormat is easy to make.

I also thought about just saying fuck it and getting a jonboat, but I like the idea of not needing a trailer for the pelican.

Thinkin about buying a boat from craigslist

First fish on a fly
Sort of cheating I found a secret spot that nobody ever fishes and the fish here jump at everything
>>
>>2649928
If you stick with a basic boat and a common outboard, and the trailer isn't broken, it's hard to go wrong.
>>
>>2649945
That's not cheating. Finding the spot is 80% of the battle. It's only cheating if someone else tells you where they are and what to use.

Are crappie hard to catch? Any tips for finding them?
>>
>>2650153
Crappies are one of those fish that are east to catch, if you can find them, but that have wildly variable location preference depending on time of day, time of year and conditions.
I’m on them hot right now, I can catch a limit in an hour at will. They are currently in 24 feet of water, right on the bottom, and respond well to a minnow on a ball jig tossed out about 30 feet from the boat and slowly jogged across the bottom. Ned rig if fishing artificials.

Of course, if you’re not on my lake, you might not find them where I’m finding them, I can’t give you accurate advice for your area, because your lake and you conditions are not the same as mine.
>>
Still no luck on any halibut socal bros. The Perch have been plentiful though. Does anybody eat BSP? If you do how do you like them prepared
>>
>>2650167
Is that Oceanside harbor beach? I grew up fishing all around that whole area.
I've eaten plenty of perch, these are my two favorite ways to eat them
1) filet, scale but don't skin your catch. Get some olive oil hot in a pan, add salt, pepper and any other seasoning you like. Fry fillets skin side down for about 2 minutes, flip and repeat. Slide those bitches on a sandwich with sauteed onions, tomatoes and garlic (if you didn't already use it in the fry). Add olives and oregano for extra Mediterranean flavor.
2) cut potatoes and carrots into 1-inch pieces, place on some lightly oiled aluminum foil. Add salt and thyme to the mix, place the foil wrap on a hot grill for about 10 minutes. Add your fish, extra salt and thyme, let cook for another 10 and enjoy
>>
>>2650180
On that second recipe, you can add a bit of fish stock if you want extra moist roots
