I've noodled trout and bass, but never catfish. And I guess trout isn't really the same thing as noodling because what you do is actually tickle their belly, and then scoop them, not stick your fingers in their mouth.

fuck I got a rod that I thought would fit into my rod case but its just a little bit too long like 2 inches for each piece
I don't wanna buy another case
I think there's some cushioning at the end of the case that I might be able to remove to stuff it in not sure though

nvm I realized I can just let it stick out of the case a little, it closes vertically with a zipper so I'll just let it stick out the couple inches at the top

How do you guys deal with spools of line specifically the tag end
I'm thinking about cutting some notches in this spool so maybe I can slot it in and have it hold there
I used to just keep them in the box but I like going lighter
Maybe I could use some tape? Or a rubberband?
>>

Rubberband or a small piece of masking tape works well. Or cut the slot into the spool.

Fishing newfag here
Just got back from fishing for bass with minnow and redworm. I didn't catch shit and my bait kept coming off the hook. I know for a fact I fed the worms through the hook sufficiently, but I'm wondering if my minnow were slipping off after I cast. I hooked them near the anus below the spine, it looked secure enough but I can't be sure. Perhaps some cheeky fish were just screwing me out of free food. It was also raining out if that makes any difference
I want to get good at catching shit with live bait before I move on to the fancy spinners and shit
>>
>>2642738
>I want to get good at catching shit with live bait before I move on to the fancy spinners and shit
live bait is dogshit for bass unless you're using live bluegill chasing trophy bass
don't buy fancy spinners either
you will be far more productive and learn more relevant fishing skills just throwing wacky rigs.
all you need to buy is a pack of senko style stick baits that you're not too cheap to buy and a pack of 1/0 Mosquito/Drop Shot hooks. This will teach you way more about bass fishing than soaking bait.

I just use this product called Line Leash, i have no idea how i ended up with it but its really usefull. It also makes tying rigs go by a little faster because i tied a piece of cord through the spool and have it hanging on my workbench so when i need some ill just pull, cut the lenght need and start tying a rig without worrying about the spool unwinding. This is really helpful when im trying +10 rigs

Just fished off my kayak at la jolla for like 8 hours and it was delayed. Other kayaks and boats were everywhere and no one was getting bit. Weird cuz the water was pretty clean for inshore and warm. I ended up getting one short bass but of course I got buzzed by a school of 15-20lb yellowtail in the reserve on my way back to the beach...

I just got into fishing thanks to a friend and now I'm buying my own stuff, so I have a few questions
1. Since I live by lakes and the ocean, is it fine for me to buy a heavier line and use it for both, or should I also buy a lighter line for freshwater?
2. Why is everyone I know telling me to buy a baitcaster then laughing?
3. Do I need a swivel for everything? The people I fish with have swivels on each of their rods and basically use them to change quickly between different kinds of fishing. Can't I just tie the hook directly to the line?
>>
>>2642887

1. depends on what you're targeting in each

2. they're probably just meeting on you. It's good to learn both, you'll discover they both have their merits. Use the best tool for the job

3. All depends on what types of presentations you're using. I use simple snaps for lures and tie hooks directly to the leader for chunk and live bait.
>>
>>2642894
So is there any drawback on using a heavy line for catching, say, minnows or small bass? I understand not using thin line for big fish, but I can't imagine any drawbacks for always using heavy line
>>
>>2642901
the drawback is that its more visible to the fish also you cast further with lighter line
>>
>>2642901
depending on the type of lure you're using your line could be too thick to even be able to tie on. You would need to be running super fat line with super small lures though
>>
>>2642901
lures like the squarebill run deeper with thinner line. If you want to maximize your running depth you should use 10 or 12 lb fluoro whereas if you want to run shallower use 17lb
thinner line is also more limber - better action for glidebaits jerkbaits etc.

Anybody else impulse buying vintage tackle like a lunatic? I finally started displaying it, it's getting a little embarrassing considering how far from the ocean I live.
>>
>>2642901
Heavy line also eats up your spool capacity. I prefer to fill my spool with braid and tie on a leader line. In most cases anything above 12 or so pounds is overkill unless you’re fishing near structure or in vegetation or throwing heavy lures. My dropshot setup uses 20lb mainline to a 5lb leader for example. Also if you’re utilizing your drag appropriately, you will rarely break off even on lighter lines

I live in a medium sized city, we have a popular river to fish out of, but they've just put new restrictions on where you're allowed to fish on this river, basically limiting you to only the over crowded tourist attraction spots which are always over flowing with litter and like 20 people with thier own radios blastic aweful music way to loud. You're no longer allowed to go to your favorite secret spot on the river to fish from.

Who the fuck makes these kinds of rules?

How do drop shots not totally spook the fish? You're hucking basically small rocks along with whatever you're also throwing to catch them.

He flopped off my hook and went under my kayak seat I was sure he'd drown before I got him out but he eventually figured hos way out and I snapped a quick Pic before I sent him away. Only needed to sit for about 3 seconds then swam off strong, I think he'll be fine.
>>2643398

>>
>>2643412
It casts a little farther than you'd expect, but since the gear ratio is 2.8:1 you'll be reeling for a long time unless you're just that fast at reeling. For the same reason, I'd say to stick to float fishing. Other than that, it's a decent enough pole to go for small fish since larger fish would probably break it. It comes with 3 pound line for a reason, after all. I've never used a full sized collapsible pole before, so I don't know how it compares unfortunately

They're probably wet wading because it's warm out and the water is warmish. When it's even a little cold out and the water is cold it's really nice to be in a dry pair of waders.

>>
>>2643913
Well they don't LOOK small. If you're worried about bending hooks maybe tey inline singles?
>>
>>2643914
Mostly comes down to bow much force it takes to bend them out and how good the point is and how well it holds that point. Bent inward is a divisive style, some people don't like the loss of gap but others like the increased transfer if energy the point in style offers, more hook setting force is directed to the point because the point is aimed in the direction of the force.

I love using old drag-less direct drive reels for carp fishing. 100% control of the line, and for some reason you can buy NIB fishing reels from the 20s and 30s for nothing. You can get some of the more beat-up bait casters for 5$, They are of all metal construction and many have ornate designs on the side. I caught a 30" carp on an old Pflueger Summit, and I have just bought a NOS Shakespeare service. I've yet to catch any fish with it, however, it is very durable in construction. I've seen people do it on youtube on the west coast and in australia, but those are very different shorelines than what I'm working with

Recently got my first fly rod. Wasnt much of a fishing person before but was looking for something to do while enjoying nature. Drove 1.45 hours out to a good spot and enjoyed the hell out of myself. 5 hours flew by, caught 3 and netted 2. This is the first trout on the fly. It makes me emotional in a spiritual kind of way thinking about getting back out there.

love you guys.
Any recommendations for some cheapish starting flies / nymphs / streamers? I lost maybe 2-3 dry flies out on the water and want to stock up before heading back out on Saturday. Local places are fine (I have an Orvis in my town) but maybe looking for a more budget friendly kit to get a hold of.

Cheap kits always suck though; any streamer from 1-4 inches is good, Adam's and elk hair caddis are good for dries, pheasant tails and hares ear nymphs are good nymphs.

I've gone to this park 4 times. Fished all of it's 5 lakes. This is the first time I caught a fish. I was leaving and saw a female bald eagle dive and hit the water and fly away with a fish near this rock bridge/lake divider. So I went over there and cast out once and immediately got this little bass to bite. I guess there are fish in here after all.
>>
>>2644545
I heard a saying once that "90% of fish are in 10% of the lake".
I think it's an exaggeration, but I've never had much luck with lake fishing.
Which is why I stick to creek and rivers.
Maybe once I get a boat I'll play in the lake some more. I always see structure only accessible by boat and think "fish be there".

anywhere along the coast, rig up a carolina rig with a piece of shrimp on a circle hook. You'll be amazed at how many fish you catch
>>
>>2644774
Can I just go on a sandy beach or do I need to goto like a fishing pier or places that have more vegetation? What does the bead on the Carolina rig do?
>>
>>2644778
Yeah just pull up to a spot, chuck out your line and you’ll get bit. Fish are hanging out between the sandbars all up and down the coastline feeding on whatever’s there. Some fish hang around kelp or rock, others prefer a sandy flat. The bead protects your knot from getting chewed up by the weight. You’d be surprised how shallow and close to shore a lot of the bites will be
>>
>>2644778
Sandy beach is a different experience. You need to move around and learn the structure. However, it is more rewarding and you have a lot of space for yourself
Fishing pier is more beginner friendly but it is crowded and certain desirable game species are rare since the pier is very heavily pressured.

>>
>>2644778
So I'm the guy you're responding to and the way I do a Carolina rig is

mainline -> free floating bullet weight -> swivel -> leader -> hook

The swivel keeps the weight on your mainline and separated from the hook. I have about 2ft of leader. The weight holds your hook and bait in place and on the bottom. Dead shrimp floats so it'll float off the bottom. Also works with live bait. You can change out the bullet weight for a pyramid weight if the current is too strong and pushing you into rocks. I would look for a jetty to fish off of, or find a spot near some mangroves, or go to a pier. You could try directly in sandy surf beach but I have better luck near structure. I also went from fishing the great lakes to saltwater fishing in the south and this is how the locals taught me

Dude, the outer banks of NC (Corolla to Ocracoke) has some of the best surf fishing in the world. You can drive on the beach if your car can handle it and you buy whatever permit you need, or go to the piers. Jeneatte's Pier in Nags Head is a really nice pier, but I recommend avoiding on weekends as it crowds up with morons pretty quickly. Buxton has "the point", the part of the banks that makes that right angle. That particular spot is incredible for large bull red drum. Something about the wave pattern at that spot that creates holes for bait and predators alike. I personally like to fish the more remote beaches between Nags Head and Avon. Get out there, find a hole, and throw some cut bait or fishbites out there. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, watch some youtube videos. HeySkipper has a lot of OBX content and he catches a lot of shit. I pulled this red out of the beach at Frisco, which is just SW of Buxton on fresh dead shrimp, casted maybe 15 yards from shore. Good luck anon.

I just inherited a huge lot of fishing rods, reels, some crab rings and such. Most of the rods are quite old but in very good condition, the reels are as well, mostly old style saltwater baitcasters in good condition. My question is this, before fucking with any of these old rods and reels is there a "DO NOT FUCKING DO THAT" list of simple instructions? I plan to use these, not sell them. Some of the wrapping on some rod's eyes are fraying and I'd like to replace a couple rusty eyes on some older rods. Any guidance would be great if there's just some things that retards do before thinking about it. Thanks

I've heard an interesting strategy for bank fishing is to actually throw parallel to the bank if possible so you can get a good run across the areas close to shore without actually spooking the fish by walking there
Never tried it but it seems like a good idea
>>
>>2644956
It depend on where your structure is. It's a legit strat because the bank itself is a structure that fish can hold fairly tight to. Avoiding spooking fish is one thing, but it's mostly about maximizing the time your lure run in the "strike zone. If the flat to drop off point is farther out from the bank position, then you have to cast out further from the bank

Any tips on choosing a beach for halibut and white seabass in Southern California? I do the majority of my fishing on the Ventura County coastline, and I’m not really sure what I should be looking for to target them. The majority of the beaches I fish are exposed beaches with no jetties, sandy or rocky bottoms. Been getting a lot of big perch and croaker with the jerkbaits and swimbaits. Just not sure if I’m fishing the wrong area or if I need to put more time in

I fished a small waterfall this evening. It was awful. I caught two creek chubs in a reliable hole for small fish and got bored quickly. soon after arriving at the waterfall, using a leader (8 lb mono) for the first time, my modified uni knot slipped after I hooked a huge largemouth for this creek. I haven't caught many bass, so this would be my pb. Immediately after retying, my leader broke off completely on a snag. I caught two bluegill, and the bite was over. On the bright side, I found a glow in the dark rod holder (pun not intended but happily realized).

If the big perch and croakers are there, the halibufs are probably can be there as well.
Here's one I caughf 3 days ago at the beach, around 18-19 inches
Perch/croakers hang out in structure just like halibut. Halibut does like slack tide more than the perch/croaker. Any structure such as a rocks or grass bed can add to your chance as well, but the halibut would be sitting on the sand part. Also, you should cast PAST where you expect the halibut to be then retrieve because halibut likes to see the lure coming in from a distance and have time to make a decision to take it. A lot of times, they have to see it coming, then stalk it a bit before striking.
>>2645198
I never notice the moon affect fishing for me personally. I typically just try to get out on a low surf, low wind and close to high tide when I try to look for halibut

they are considered the easiest of all to get. they even take black men compared to other asians. they usually have a kid or two that they leave behind and send money monthly when they move to the west with a sugar daddy. after a year or two they will get you to adopt their children so they can move in with you too. they love posting their western life adventures on social media for the other females in their family back home who also dream of finding a western sugar daddy, so you at least have to regularly take them on cheap vacations to give them content. otherwise they seem pretty genuinely happy, not shocking considering how poor they are back in their homeland. don't think for a second though they they aren't waiting for the day you die, so they can get all of your shit and bring their extended family over. that's about all I know. probably a safer bet than other mail-order brides from other regions... but it's still pretty cringey unless you're a geriatric who has already had kids of their own and divorced a typical western wife who doesn't value serious long-term relationships. you know the world is fucked up these days when a mail-order bride seems like a safer bet than a western woman who's mind is broken by propaganda.

Swimbait anon here. Got back from my 30 day trip in Thailand, internet laws are kinda fucky over there so I didn't bother coming to 4chan on the off chance I'd get in trouble; I doubt I would, but whatever.

The local Thai's when they saw my baits immediately knew what I was trying to get: big predator fish. The South Koreans and Japanese I fished next to were laughing at me for being a dumb American throwing dumb baits. I was honestly shocked by that. I thought it'd be the other way around given the fishing cultures in Korea and Japan.

Anyway, I got the last laugh. Those Koreans and Japs couldn't land a fish to save their life unless it was a dinky barramundi. I saw them break off time and time again losing expensive OSP crankbaits to snakeheads and giant catfish. I landed everything. I'll wait until the next thread to load up my pics since I'm an a-hole.
>45 pound & 40 pound Mekong Giant Catfish
>7 pound toman snakehead
>two ~4.5 pound barramundis
I couldn't get the big barramundis to bite, unfortunately. People who talk shit on catfish don't know what they're talking about, those mekongs fought harder than my 60+ pound king salmon I caught as a kid in Alaska when I lived there.

>>2645666
I was using an Antares DC MD spooled with x8 strain 50 pound braid to ~6 foot of 50 pound FC shock leader, it worked out perfectly. I only got down to about ~half spool during the fight at most. Probably had ~200 yards of braid on my reel, more than enough. Even with 3x thick treble hooks that ranged from size 2 to 2/0, a semi locked drag (~9 pounds), my gear was being tested to it's limits. My reel was completely locked up for the majority of the fight, couldn't turn the handle at all. Even with an oversized reel handle to get more torque / leverage I was fucked.

I unfortunately wasn't able to go saltwater fishing. My family I was with were very busy with work life so I had to plan out my trips accordingly, not a big deal. I'm already planning a trip next year, that one will be purely saltwater fishing. My uncles were saying we'll go after squid, barramundi....and sharks. They showed me photos of 100-200 kg sharks they caught and told me my lures would work perfectly for them, I don't think they realize even a 400 size baitcaster is enough for that LOL. We'll see. I'll be using saltwater set-ups for sure and some pencil lures, but certainly not a $200+ swimbait.

dinner plate sized! 13-14" maybe? at least a lb by my estimates. I was sure it was a small bass until I pulled up a dinger crappie.
I should start carrying a scale and a camera around and making some official logs of such events cause I enjoy the surprise fish most of all.
>>
>>2645694
I never tried it but it just looks like a cheap way to fly fish with a lot less control over your fly

These seem like an interesting alternative to regular leader line, when fishing for larger species

What do you guys think?
>>
>>2645729
I tend to try to use a simpler presentation than that, even just going to double uni knots between leader and mainline over snap swivels seems to have helped. I feel like it attempts to solve a problem that is solved by just loosening your drag a little but I'm no professional.

Saltwaterbros, disregarding how retardedly wasteful/excessive and unnecessarily expensive it is, would shit like this work?
>>
>>2645742
Yes, but I would just disregard the floatbead and the extra clip between the 3 way swivel and the side line. You can simplify further with dropper loop but I personally dislike tying dropper loop and rather use a 3 way swivel.
I usually fish with only 1 hook though. If I fish a 2 hook system, I actually replace the bottom weight with a bucktail instead
>>
>>2645742
There's something like this already called the sabiki rig
>>
>>2645742
In VA we call these hi low rigs. Yes they work.
>>2645745
A sabiki rig has a similar design but an entirely different purpose. Sabikis are used to catch bait, whereas hi low rigs can catch anything from bait to bull drum to sharks.
>>
>>2645742
Instead of all that hardware tie some dropper loops, feed the loop through your hook eyes then around and just have a single line. Way less visible and wasteful because if you snagged you're only losing the weight and a couple hooks.
>>
>>2645670
Sounds like a bitchin time, honestly with what you caught I wouldn’t even be upset with not being able to hit salt.
>>
>>2645751
My main gripe with dropper loop is that it's difficult to feed the loop through hook eyes or lure eyes once you get to higher mono/fluoro leader test. The line get too thick and stiff.

>>2645742
That's literally just an overcomplicated double dropper rig
It'll catch fish but replace the 3 way swivels with dropper loops and you'll get a much sleeker rig
>Pic related I made a quadruple dropper rig with circle hooks as a set/forget bait catcher
>>2645809
Use a snelled hook and just do a loop to loop like how commercial wore double dropper rigs do, or if you know what hook you want you can just tie it in directly as a permanent part of the rig.

this makes you gay as fuck. most local tackle shops suck fucking balls. barely any selection at high prices. Only good shop I ever been to sells used tackle, random close out lots they can find, trades and buys gear, etc. mom and pop standard retail is shit.
>>
>>2645742
don't use floats pier fishing unless you are casting super far out that your line lay is flat or you are bait fishing with actual fish.
>>
>>2645925
No I'm gay for other reasons faggot lurk more
>>
>>2645729
I put 5 yards of 100 lb test mono between my 18 inch steel bite leader and my mainline on my beef sticks so that when I cast, I’ve got my finger on thick fuck mono instead of 50 lb braid. And it’s better/safer to have thick fuck mono to grab when you’re landing a big dick fish too. FG knots aren’t actually that hard, just tie a couple until you’re confident.
>>
>>2645995
>FG knots aren’t actually that hard
Can confirm
They can be time consuming to tie but the strength and low orifice are so worth, I've literally had them fail hauling big stingray on my beefstick but the failure wasn't a break. They started to come loose and let go but they caught themselves and held through the fight.
I do insist that it's not a knot, it is a weave or perhaps some kind of hitch.

Redditors downvote me to hell and back when I say the FG is better than the alberto and albright and is the golden standard for saltwater guys.

I guess doing the up and down weave x12 - 22 and doing a couple simple half hitches then pulling on both lines to cinch down the braid to leader is ridiculously complicated....
>>
>>2646102
They're just brainlets coping let them tie their inferior knots while we weave our masterpieces

I worked as a cutter on sportfishing boats for 6 years. I've cleaned probably 200,000 fish from perch to tuna.

If you didn't have a minimum 10 inch Victorianox fillet knife along with a dexter russel for some fine cutting, you were a retarded nigger.

If you are a retarded broke nigger, get a dexter russel fillet knife. They hold an edge and are very delicate while still being cheap. No frills, high carbon.
>>
>>2646110
I don't keep fish that often so I haven't gotten a fillet knife. I always have a pocket knife when I fish though
>>
>>2646109
>jerkin off a pier peacefully with literally 15 other people
Nice
>>
>>2646102
It's really simple, the FG doesn't bend the leader. Bending the line is what creates weak spots, therefore the weakest point of the leader will be at the terminal knot, which is some kind of bent line knot.
>>
>>2646110
What's the weirdest thing a passenger asked you to clean?

I am a knife enthusiast (ie a retard who likes nice knives), so I've got way too many and they are too expensive. My favorite right now is my Montana Knife Company Flathead, but realistically it doesn't do a better job than a Victorinox or a Normark/Rapala/Marttini 9 inch.

If you have one filet knife, get a knife that's 8-10 inches long and reasonably stiff. If you're buying two knives, the second one should be 6-8 inches long and very flexible (i use a John Filipi Panfish). A third knife would be a 5-6 inch knife that's very stiff. You absolutely don't need to spend the money I have, I don't regret doing so because having fancy/nice knives brings be joy, not because there's a performance difference.

Learn how to sharpen your knife or get one of those sharpeners that clamps on to the blade and sets the angle for you, don't use pull through sharpeners, they're garbage.

i like the idea of shellfishing but there are so many closures due to toxic shit in the water here that it's hard to feel safe
plus it's all controlled by the local government offices so you have to buy a special permit then buy another one if you want to try another spot, and it's a lot more expensive if you aren't a resident

the fishes in question are freshwater fishes called pike-perch, they plant them in our lakes every year and some fishermen try to kill off ass many as they can same as some shepherd would shoot wolves

I had chops during covid, and I only got stares and weird looks. I have long, 70's style sideburns now, which afford me some distinction without looking weird.
I caught 2 dink sunfish today and tried using a Rattlin Rapala, no luck. Some bitch and her kid were throwing rocks in the pond, relatively close to my spot. I was just reading about Ojibwe spear fisherman experiencing the same thing. I'm basically an Indian now. I was planning on leaving soon, so I didn't bother telling them to stop. Besides, the White Man never listens. In other news, I met a fellow angler who pointed me in the direction of a good crappie spot.

Zander and walleye are related, one is from America and one is from Europe. Like Yellow Perch and Redfin perch, they are similar to each other but not identical.

Give him a good cut the head off just above the eyes and then rcut just under the eyes to get the legs.
Poach with some spices, garlic and onion - i.e. water that is simmering slowly, not actively bubbling, for about 3 hours. Then take him out and pan fry or grill to get nice and crispy edges.
