This probably doesn't count as a modification but here are the two main ones I use. I ended up breaking the tip off my old pocket knife and didn't want to buy another one so I made my own. I made the fixed blade because I like the seax shape and I carry it around and use it a lot .

I prefer the normal Companion (S) over the HD. The HD has a thicker blade and therefore doesn't slice as well and its handle has more 'belly' which feels slightly uncomfortable in my small hands. I think you'll find yourself more often in situations where you want better cutting performance instead of the increased toughness of the HD. The standard Companion is tough enough for almost everything imo.

I had the standard companion SS, but the edge rolled quite badly while trying to slice a green branch to make a tripod/pot hanger.
The factory edge angle on the standard companion is 23 degrees (11.5 per side), while the companion HD has a 27-degree edge angle (13.5 per side).
In comparison, many outdoor knives, such as ESEE, come with edges of 40 degrees (20 per side). So even the Companion HD still has quite a delicate edge. I'd go for the HD version every time. Though, like anon said, the standard version will slice better for things like food or fine carving.
>>
>>2644650
Good point. Mora's true scandi is indeed a pretty delicate grind on their thinner stainless blades. The fact that their hardness is somewhere between 56 and 58 HRC doesn't really help either. They should probably go for 58 to 60 HRC like on their carbon blades, 12C27 is surely tough enough for that.

I'd also recommend to take a look at the Mora Bushcraft. The handle is extremely comfortable and the knife comes with a decent sheath, a robust blade geometry and a very sharp 90° spine while still being pretty affordable.

However, the overall most comfortable knife when it comes to handling might be my Mora Classic 2F. That wooden barrel shaped handle is just as simple as it is comfortable to use and fits pretty much every palm size.

>what is a nice, very resistant, utilitarian fixed blade knife?
What's your budget?
I take it by "resistant" you mean how tough is the knife?
Unless you're talking corrosion resistance
Beyond that do you need it to be stainless or not?
What's your use case?
Max length?
Minimum length?
Your question is far too broad
Going off what little you've given:
Suggestions for under $100
Budget quality low alloy steel, Terävä Jääkäripuukko 140, can be had for $50 without a sheath, $90 with a sheath
If you want stainless Mora Garberg, $87
If you want tougher, then be prepared more to get something in CPM 3V if you want a high alloyed non (semi) stainless
Only tougher you're going to get beyond CPM 3V is going to be 5160 or 8670, both, like the Jaakaripuukko (which is in 80CrV2), are going to rust if you look at them sideways
Beyond that, pay out the nose for some unicorn shit like Delta 3V from Carothers, or INFI from Busse

I don't know if this is the right thread for it but I'm not about to shit up a board I rarely browse just for my tripe.

Let's say you're going into the wilds and can only bring one brush/terrain clearing tool. What do you pick? A Woodsman's Pal? Or maybe some kind of entrenching tool since a shovel may be handy and it can at least somewhat do the jobs of an axe, machete, saw, shovel, and hammer? (I imagine it'd be less convenient for light use such as clearing saplings, but it seems to have the most overall use cases) Or maybe a simple machete of whatever size you prefer since that'd likely be the lightest option?

what's the white man's sharpening tool? Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener? is that enough for all uses? or better to keep that for on-the-go, and something else less portable for sharpening at home?
>>
>>2647542
>Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener?
Takes care of 80% of sharpening needs. The guides are 20° so you'll be limited to that if you use them, but you can technically take out the diamond plates and sharpen to your own angle. 20° is too high of an angle for me personally. I prefer 17° on my pocket/hunting and kitchen knives, which I think is the sweet spot. Some type of guided system is going to be best for achieving that.
>>
>>2647552
>The guides are 20°
sorry im a retard, that's 20º per side, so 40º total edge, or 10º per side, 20º edge?
>>
>>2647564
20° per side obviously
>>
>>2647552
what happens if my knife came with a 15º edge from factory, and i use a 20º sharpener on it? will i die?
>>
>>2647570
No, but you will have to reprofile the edge a bit because when the factory angle is steeper than the one you are trying to put on, you are basically putting a microbevel on the factory apex, which isn't very durable for obvious reasons.

I'm stinking of buying a s35vn buck 119
Will I regret missing out on that extra inch and half compared to 120?
I'm upgrading from a mora I lost in the field. I like these lighter duty knives, I'm not gonna be chopping trees with it or larp as picrel. Seems 6" is sufficient.

Naw nah, I was actively being retarded when I lost it.

>decide to throw the knife into a huge ant hill, see if I can stick it in
>throw knife
>goes behind the and hill
>lil dude suddenly decides to sprint at mach 5
>catch him
>go back
>there are like 2 dozen ant hills around me, start doubting which one I yeeted at
>knife is OD green
>foot tall prairie grass
I can contain my retardation usually so I'm not worried.

Since this is a knife thread, I'll just make a random confession lost in the middle of the thread: For their price (<15€ shipped including VAT), I kinda like those really cheap F1 clones from AliExpress. Have two of them.

>>
>>2648540
A couple things: square up the block and drill the holes for the pins before you cut it into 2 scales when it's still in one piece, so that the holes are parallel to each other and perpendicular to a side. Laying the blade blank on the scales and drilling through the holes in the scales in the best way to get accurate spacing. Shaping the handle with sandpaper will stain the grain if it has any metal components, like pins, spacers, finger guards, shields, etc., so using a file and rasp is superior.
If your wood has a lot of holes you might want to stabilize it first.

The AliExpress search terms will blow your mind...
>F1 knife
But look around AE, there's one version of it from "HX OUTDOORS online Store" (search 1005005555697350 on AE) that is cheaper and is not branded as Fällkniven (and the sheath is crap), which might interest you if your country's customs are kinda iffy with trademark infringement.

But be warned, internet meme knife guys (DBK) say the knife is shit because it's not as good as the real F1 which costs 10x the money.
I, on the other hand, say it's about as expected for a 15€ knife with that steel (5cr15) as I have a few others that fit the same specifications to compare with (knives from Decathlon).
A Mora Companion IS a better quality knife, but I like the design of the F1 a lot more.

So, you decide what to do with your money, I've relayed all the info I can give you.

I'm too autistic to find a knife.
I went into Canadian Tire and stared at the ~30 knives they had for half and hour and eventually the employees asked me to leave my backpack up front otherwise I'd have to leave.
I never ended up deciding.
I've gone to 3 Canadian Tire's that claim to have 1 of these in stock, but none of them did.

Yes, beavercraft do a couple of nice starter kits - I particularly like the bird and the spoon kit - but also check out Doug Linker and 'Carving is fun' on youtube. Both have a bunch of great beginner tutorials and ideas.
As for finishing, I use beeswax or mineral oil.

I'm down with axes. That one looks OK. The patterns are different between the pics with the sheath/mask on and off. The mask-off pic has cheeks, while the mask-on pic is a Montreal/cheekless pattern. Do you know which one you'll be getting?
>>
>>2650068
seems to be an oversight of whoever put together the image for the store. I'd be getting this one.

I want it to cut small to medium sized logs (think fencepost thick), small trees of the same diameter, etc. Some of the wood around here is very hard, but I have a saw too.
>>
>>2650069
Cool, nice. Cheeks are better. 18" is hatchet sized, so fencepost sized is about all it'll handle. Does Condor make a boy's axe? About 2.5 lbs and 28" long? That's perfect imo for an all-arounder.

are replaceable blade knives any good? ordered a blaze orange havalon piranta-stag for hunting but now i'm intrigued if i can find a general purpose knife with a blade that can be resharpened and replaced, the havalon is a scalpel blade and must be disposed when dull. typical work is cutting packaging, cordage, gutting fish and other lightweight tasks. i don't bushcraft

actually i might just keep bringing a box cutter and buy a 100-pack of scalpel blades for the havalon since it's stupid cheap. thanks

If you want nice snap blade box cutters, there’s a couple Jappo brands and they’re not even that expensive. Like $8-$10 for the 8mm guys. Olfa is the popular one, but this other brand NT cutter is dope, that red one is aluminum. It’s like 13 super sharp blades on the 8mm guys.
>>
>>2650890
>>2650891
i was thinking the scalpel surely can process a fish just as well as any other game and the blades are stupid cheap. no more expensive than a good disposable razor blade
then i'll bring a box cutter for all the things that aren't game like plastic wrapping and cordage
sounds good to me, i don't particularly enjoy sharpening knives
>>
>>2650892
nah, its too short. you really need a long thin flat blade for processing animals. like extending 5-10 segments and you're fine but then are you really going to throw them back in the knife after that? or dispose of them all at once?
>>
>>2650894
i've filleted fish with a tiny victorinox SAK just fine and the havalon piranta is one of the most popular knives for gutting and skinning elk here, i'm sure it can handle a trout or bass just fine. in any case i will see when it arrives
>>
>>2650898
thats not a bad choice of knife at all for certain size fish, it's the opposite of short stubby blade.
>>
>>2650899
i never intended to use a box cutter for filleting fish

>>
>>2650891

What's the model name?
>>
>>2650903
They sell Olfa snap blade knoifes at Lowes. I think Home Depot only has Husky ones. If you’re at Lowe’s, over in the tool section by the other knives and cutters, they have the 9mm, 18mm, and 25mm yellow plastic ones for $7-$15 depending on size. And in the paint and scraper section, they have the all metal 9mm which super compact.

If you get one and like it, you will probably end up like me and get the NT Cutter from Amazon shortly after. I always would grab the standard utility knife when I needed a super sharp blade, but it’s no sharper than a pocket knife after a couple tough cuts, and the snap blade solves that problem.

Damn I’m about to go buy a larger NT cutter, they have these sweet low angle blades that are like scalpals as well if you want it. I’ve been wanting a larger one for drywall and carpet.
