Holy fuck I want one. What rod would I even pair with it? Do they make light baitcasters?
>>
So my rod is starting to break all over so I'm going to order a new one.

I'm looking for something that isn't too big (I fish mostly for perch and trout in small - medium rivers using spinners and stuff), non telescopic is preferred and of course not to expensive. I don't really have a budget and open to all suggestions, but the better the price/quality rating the better.
>>
Is it it normal to have to pay entrance fees to fish on big lakes? Where the fuck do I fish for free?
>>
>>2584771
The ocean. All the lakes here also have additional fees aside from having your state license so I just fuck off to the beach or the bay. Plus they're closer.

Bros I caught 25-30 of these bad boys today, biggest one was a little bigger than pic related. Took that pic the other day. Also on my first cast of the day I caught a tiny grass carp. How did you your Saturday go dudes?
>>
I’ve been throwing this in front of gar for the past hour getting some bites but can’t hook them what am I doing wrong bros?
>>
So I spent about $100 on a rod and reel. First time fishing. I go to the lake today and start casting and the line keeps tangling at the reel. I spent more time fucking with it than I did fishing. I figured maybe it’s a bad reel so I went to the local bait shop and told the lady what’s going on. She said I can try a new reel and to come back if it continues. Well, it happened again. She took the reel back and told me she’s not sure what I’m doing wrong and shrugged.

The fuck is going on here.

I couldn't get trout to bite on my fly rod today. Probably just me being completely unprepared for lake fishing with flies today. I wanted to go fish on the river but it's currently in peak runoff and pretty nasty. On the bright side all my emergers kept pulling in shiner after shiner and I even got this fairly hefty guy on one.

Newbie fisherman here. What is the fastest, best way to dispatch a fish so that the fish feels the least pain, and passes quickly? As well as subsequentially filleting/butcher said fish? Also, what is a straight forward way to cook said fish. I know this kind of falls somewhere on the /ck/ side of questions. Though, this has been a block for me actually keeping the fish. Where I just catch and release even keepers and I want to know how to dispatch and filet and cook the fish without ruining it.
>>
>>2585005
>slack without tension
Am I supposed to keep the line on my finger as I reel the slack? This may be my issue.
>>2585024
Spinning reel, 15lb I think. I have another spool that has 20lb and had the same trouble.

Another thing I’ve noticed is I can only seem to get 15-20 yards cast on it before the line just stops. Is that normal distance? Seems I should go farther with my 7ft rod
>>
>>2585037
don't go higher than 8lb mono/flouro if on spinning unless using braid
that's your entire issue
get some 6lb mono in whatever is cheap, ask them to spool it for you

>>
>>2585037
What >>2585039 said, plus you can get line buried into the windings on the spool if you let it slack too often.
Tie on a fairly heavy sinker, and cast it as far as you can. If it shorts, look at the spool and I bet the line is snubbed or fouled in the spool windings. You may be able to pull out the fouled section and unspool til you get to a more solid lay.
Then apply tension with your supporting hand, and reel in, re-laying the line on the spool.
>>
>>2585037
>>2585001
if the line is going up under the spool and getting tangled, you have too much line on the spool. no, you don't have to keep fingers on the line when you reel, you just want to pull out any excess tension.
>>
>>2585055
i mean pull out excess slack
>>
>>2585030
Give it a whack on the head with a blunt object then cut the gills to bleed immediately. Filleting is easy and there's a ton of tutorials on how to do it online. Personally I'm a basic bitch and fry most of my fish, and half the time I don't even bother to fillet them and just gut them and whole fry them. For fancier stuff I like a lot of Hank Shaw's recipes https://honest-food.net/
>>
>>2585079
Many thanks. I was unsure how to approach it. People have told me to cut it in the brain/head, or to freeze it until it stopped moving and then lobotomize it, and proceed to filleting.
>>
>>2585080
Stabbing it in the brain is also a good way to kill them quickly, but cold is a really slow method that I'm not fond of.
>>
>>2585030
"Ikejime" method. Carry an ice pick with you. The best way is to stab it right into its brain and wiggle it around which basically makes it immediately brain dead. This website is a good resource, it gives you a map of where exactly to stab on each species of fish.
https://www.ikijime.com/
>>
>>2585083
>cold
My grandfather did it that, my uncle just went to gutting it I believe without anything else. Hearing the fish flop in the freezer and my uncles way kind of made me uneasy filleting.
>>2585087
I've heard of that, but I was reluctant to try it because I feel like I would severely mess it up, but I'll give it a try. I think you take a metal wire and run it through the spine too if I recall.

What makes bfs a meme?

Where do I catch bigger bass? I catch plenty of 1lbs maybe 2lb tops. I know one of my spots holds some large fish, but it's pretty pressured. My other go to is off a dock and there's plenty of decent crappie, big sunfish, but the bass are small. I've considered upsizing baits. I mainly use small plastics or jerk baits. I've tried senkos but can't get a hit to save my life, but that's probably me.
>>
>>2585289

>>
>>2585289
Biggest bass hold the best hiding spots. Fish the cover within cover if that makes sense. You can step up the size of your lures or try putting smaller panfish you catch on a circle hook. Hell you might even catch a big cat doing that
>>
>>2585354
I think so. In one spot there is a tree that hangs over a cutout and there is wood in the water underneath. It's snag city but somewhere like that? The lake is an old quarry so it's a bit featureless aside from docks and a few odd over hanging tree lines.

Sounds like you fish the columbia river, I used to have the same problem. Find places where bait fish spawn. When there's thousands of salmon and shad minnows breaking water, you will find walleye. Early summer all the way to December, fish at night. Find bank spots with a drop-off about 150 ft or less from the bank. Walleye will come up shallow to hunt at night. You can do >>2585435 also but just know that when you pull a walleye up from 60 ft of water it kills them
>>
>>2585289
>What makes bfs a meme?
There's really no benefit over just using a regular ulralight spinning rod. It's not hard to make pinpoint casts with a spinning rod, feathering the spool as it casts (a thing you should be doing regardless to mend your line) to slow the casting speed / stop the cast completely for target casting akin to using a baitcaster and feathering the spool and thumbing it once it's at your target. Casting distance is also hampered.

With ultralight spinning tackle, you can slingshot lures like you can sling a fly on a fly rod, loading the lure up via grabbing it and loading the rod and flinging it. Can't do that on a BFS set-up.

Price of a UL spinning combo compared to a BFS combo is night and day. UL spinning combo can be had for nothing, a BFS combo is gonna be ~$150-200 even with the cheapest, shittiest ping ping made stuff.
>>
>>2585510

But you aren't shitty to fish because you're republicans (The HNICs of animal cruelty at Florida piers are still actual niggers and they aren't republicans), you're shitty to fish because you're retarded, like the other pier fishermen.

What does humanely dispatching cut bait cost? an extra second with a knife. What does making sure that your Mayan Cichlid will still be dead, even if it gets knocked back into the water, cost? An extra second with a knife. But you're a retard and as likely to cut your thumb's extensor tendon as you are to brain a fish properly, so I understand not wanting to risk it.

Yeah, they’ve been smashing top water lately. I had a lot of luck fishing citizen 7’s a month ago, now they won’t touch plastics or glides. I’ve bass fished for 3 years and struggled to get a topwater bite, now I have 7 good smallmouth catches on topwater just this month.

Never fished flukes either. The DRT VTS 7 kicks ass. Smallies fucking smashing it if they don’t smash the UFO wake.

Just got home from a 1.5 day trip. Only got a 50# and 20# bluefin, but that translates to about 35-40 pounds of meat and that's plenty for me and the family. I fish from shore and every time, without fail, a fisherman on a boat will pull on up right in front of me and start drop shotting. It gets so tiring. Yesterday a guy did just that after walking 4 miles to a secluded cove I like to fish, immediately had to go to the next cove. Was greeted by a snake on top of a hill I had to climb. Was fun.

It happens so often, I don't even know what to do anymore. I've considered doing the ultimate redneck thing and just flashing my concealed carry and telling them to fuck on out of here.

Learn to share the water
Went fishing last year with my dad. We saw this dude fishing from his dock with a bobber we gave him a lot of room and we were simply just trolling by. We were going to start fishing the cove Nowhere near where he was fishing. we get about 300' away from him and he starts screaming at us saying that we're about to anchor down (we don't have an anchor in our boat by the way we have power Poles) he keeps screaming and insists that hes gonna call the cops on us for causing a disturbance. Meanwhile it's like 7:00 in the morning and hes screaming at us eventually I ask him to just call the cops. he goes inside no cops were called.
White line is where I traveled on my boat from left to right. Redd is the Karen.

the thing with trout magnets is that they're supposed to fall horizontally, like in the pic. but no, they're nothing special.
>>
>>2586134
nah, most boaters will absolutely pull up near you and start fishing, especially if they see you catching anythng. they feel like as long as they are a dozen yards away from you, they're not stealing your spot. hell, they're technically the ones perfectly over the fishing spot that you have to cast to often times. I know this for a fact, I have a boat and I like to hike to unfished banks just to get outdoors. when I'm on family/friend's boats, they ALWAYS pull up or drive closely past people bank fishing. I constantly have to tell them "someone is fishing right there" or "don't get too close to their line, they have line out" and the people operating the boat act like I'm stupid or that they're confused as to why I care. It's annoying as fuck, that's why I usually fish alone. I have boomer family members who will quite literally pull up right beside a fishing pier with people on it. I ask them "why?" and they will be like "they're catching fish over here." It's just downright cringe being right underneath people fishing on a pier, let alone makes you look like a completely oblivious twat.

how exactly are you blaming a bank fisherman? they can only cast but so far lmao. you call that "hogging the water?" we are referring to boomers pulling up into a random cove where you're fishing and choosing to pretend you're not within casting distance of them. they can go anywhere on the lake with a boat, and instead they choose to cockblock you after seeing you reel in fish.

I use a bag full of lead and lift it with the rod like you're fishing. That way angle and resistance from the guides on the rod is automatically factored in. It honestly isn't really something to worry about for most fishing unless you like fishing really light or are targeting stuff that really fights like tuna and jacks.

Goat Rope but honestly if your using Braided line I'd look for a color that blends in with the water color. The thing with monofilament and fluorocarbon is the nearly invisible in the water no matter the water color.

In a lot of the water I fish in for Florida I stick with like a Green Moss because the water is normally not that clear its stained so a green moss kinda blends good. Up it more clear water I try and stick with a blue. Or you can just go with a longer leader.
>>
>>2587067
I've only been able to find Goat Rope at one bait and tackle shop here locally but online bruiserbaits sells it. I think it's way better then a lot of top name fishing lines
>>
>>2586962
Seconding what >>2586972 said. I use a 1/4oz-1oz heavy (fury 734) rod for jigs. I usually use a 3/8oz or 1/2oz jig but having that extra weight rating helps. As you start to max out what your rod can take it doesn’t cast as nicely. Jigs usually have pretty heavy wire hooks and the weed guard, having that oomph to set it helps when you’re fishing deep. As far as line goes it all depends. My mainline is 40lb braid and sometimes I’ll run only that depending on the cover. Otherwise I’ll use anywhere from a 10-20lb leader

>>
>>2587123
it sinks so you can't fish topwater or floats with it properly, as your standing line will apply force.
>>
>>2587091
10 or 15lb braid is what you should use, leader should be slightly lighter rating unless it's a leader for toothy fish like pike where heavier is more abrasion resistant. you can get wind knots in any braid, but lighter seems easier. original 15lb powerpro is pretty solid but it and ANY 4 strand braid is ridiculously noisy and abrasive through the guides, so I'd go 8strand. J-Braid Grand x8 is probably the least stiff line so it's good for spinning gear. lots of people use Sufix 832 also.

Any fellow retention pond fishers in north Florida have any advice for me? I tend to fish local places because I just end up without much time to fish on the weekdays.
They're all so shallow and the bass seem to rarely bite. I've chalked it up there just not being many bass in general. I kinda just cycle between a few ponds every few weeks I know have bass because I've caught them before

is it bad to fish for spawning bass?

Has anyone in ontario (or canada) ever tried contacting the ministry or conservation officers to suggest stocking their local lake? I live on a decent sized lake but it's extremely deep, over 200 feet in a large section of it and I want to see if they can stock it with some rainbows and lakers. There's really nothing else living that deep except white fish which are not very abundant. Wondering what actions I would take to get this started.
>>
>>2587588
why would you want to destroy a healthy whitefish fishery?
>>
>>2587590
i believe the lake was commercially fished for whitefish wayyy back (70's maybe?)....you hear of a single individual catching one every 5 or so years. Don't think it'd destroy the whitefish fishery to be fair, they are bottom feeders and it is quite common to find whitefish where trout live almost anywhere.

Unless there's ciscos or some other baitfish like that I don't know if the a lake trout population would be sustainable
>>
>>2587593
It's hard t believe that there are only whitefish and that the population hasn't recovered since the 70s. What lake is this? Lakers can get out of control and outcompete native fish but maybe brook trout or rainbows could be stocked depending where in Canada you are.
>>
>>2587612
FishOnLine (government website) says there's cisco, rainbow smelt and white sucker

Depends who you ask. Where I live during spawning season, the shallow parts of the lake are closed off. Sure you might get your PB, but a female full of eggs might die during the catch.
>>

They are pretty good at spitting out/regurgitating what they cannot digest.

I've got one in an aquarium, and it has eaten (and spit up) all kinds of weird stuff. The blue rubber bands from produce for example.

wtf do you fish for
>>
OK. I got some wet flies, how do I start rigging them in my spinning rod, bobber?
>>
>>2587720
Literally just tie the flies onto the end of your line and put the bobber 2-4 feet above it. Cast well upstream of where the fish are so the bobber splash doesn't spook them and the flies have time to sink. IMO weighted nymphs are better than wet flies under a bobber.
>>
>>2587727
There are some weighted flies in the pack, I'll try them all but what I hate is bobbers.
Have only caught 2 fish total with bobbers, hate them but a ton without them.
>>
>>2587734

Use a stick float like this, it doesn't spook fish. If you want to cast super far use a water bobber / casting bubble. If you are fishing in shallow water don't have to worry about depth too much, only gets trickier as you fish deeper water.

Boaters can fuck off, especially the dipshits who bring in massive ocean sized fishing boats for a goddamn reservoir or lake and then peel off around the whole thing. That and fuck the oil and fuel leakage into the fresh-water ways. Should be a ban on motorboats for reservoirs especially. Fuck drunks on boats and the speed peelers on the waters, one of the reasons it makes deep lake/reservoir fishing hell on a kayak.

>>2587720
Yup, smallest bobber you can cast or a device called a casting bubble which is just a clear bobber
>>2587583
Depends
I generally discourage bed fishing but I you insist try to keep the fish off its nest for less than a minute so it doesn't get ravaged by crawdads bluegills and other things
>>
>>2587583
Bed fishing is easy bro. Bad fishermen target the males on beds and good fishermen know to target the female roaming off the bed, subsequently pre-spawn roamers and post-spawn females looking for stuff to eat are roaming in the same area. You have more chances getting a big female targeting AWAY from the bed than on it.

You will see the female roaming around if the water is clear enough. It’s the big fat one.

Not the OP who asked but it's an interesting question. Where I fish, they stock walleye every year, and I'm a shore fisher, they come in to spawn and that's about the only way I can get walleye. Never tried to, but is it frowned upon. I assume not since half the fish population where I'm at is walleye and they stock the walleye yearly.
>>
>>2587745
I was actually thinking of getting a water bobber because I'm tired of losing trout magnets, guessing the clear bobber won't distract it from the actual lure.
Never thought of getting that kind thin
lure tho, good info. Thanks bro

Think there are any fish in this gross runoff pond next to an apartment? The ducks and frogs love it. You think if throw a bucket of river bivalves and sunfish in here they'd make due?
>>
>>2587791
There very well could be, some fish (especially carp) can tolerate disgusting water. If frogs are breeding in there there probably aren't bass.
>bivalves and sunfish
A few sunfish could probably survive in there, but most native mussels need fairly clean water to survive and ones you get in a river will be more used to flowing water and won't thrive.
>>
>>2587799
You think I should try fishing it?

Who up casting they rod

Put line on a baitcaster for the first time today. Pretty sure I didn't put enough. I put 17lb yozuri FC on it, and medium rod fast action that I intend on casting jigs and heavier lures with. It's what I got already. Reel is an abu garcia black max.
