you honestly can't throw 1/4oz as far as you're probably thinking, especially on a day with any wind. it's simply a matter of physics. you can throw a 1/2oz pretty far though, especially if using light line or braid and a long whippy rod.
>>2580333
whatever you want. just be warned you can't rig them weedless because they're way too tough. hell, the'yre hard to rig on a ned head normally. also, mine got all funky looking after I left one out of the bag and with some other soft plastics, I think it was a chemical reaction or some shit. the only thing to keep in mind is that Nikko's are extremely bouyant, so use a heavier jig head than you normall would, otherwise it will sink extremely slow, and if the jig comes with a keeper you might have to cut it off because the plastic is so damn though and elastic.

It's not feezable to to calculate and release bow fishing because if how high the mortality rate is. Your best bet is to target invasives and start a garden so you can use the fish you kill as fertilizer OR befriend someone with a garden and give them the fertilizer.

Lots of turtles is probably a bad sign for bass fishing I'd imagine, right

>>
>>2581140
Not really. I fish a few ponds that have tons of turtles and a very healthy fish population. You just have to avoid casting near turtles. It's annoying snagging them because they're like rubber. I always have some side cutters on me or some really beefy pliers so I can crush/cut the barb if I hook a turtle, otherwise it's hard to get out without hurting them pretty bad. I don't think they're eating a lot of fish unless it's fry. Probably more frogs than anything.

how the FUCK do i spool my spinning rod? i wanna every time I try it gets fucking tangled AS FUCK on the on the line somewhere between where it comes off the spool and the first guide ring. I'm about to just take it to a shop I cannot figure this out for the lie of me. Would taping my arbor knot down help?
>>
>>2581379
>taping down the arbor knot
Nah, you don’t need to do that. Tie a better knot, or put one layer of electrical tape or a thin strip of duct tape on the spool first and then tie the line on. The tape will give the line something to dig into.

Run the line through a couple more guides, maybe through the whole rod. And try to keep some tension on the spool so the line is somewhat tight when reeling and spooling the thing. You’re probably getting knots because the spool is flopping around and the line is all over the place.
>>
>>2581379
If you're using a line with memory like monofilament make sure to orient the spool so that the line unwinds from it in the same direction that your reel winds onto it's own spool.
>>

Nice, I got a new 250 in Aurora Purple for 55$ a few months ago. You might want to add a nose hook or a 2nd split ring on the front hook if you retrieve really slow. I find a much higher hook up %, especially if you find your fish targetting only the head or have monster smallmouth around.

unpopular opingion:
I love both bass fishers and fly fishers.
I hate asiatic fisherman that show up to little ponds or other crowded place and fill up coolers with anything they catch to bring home, sunfish/perch (not even decente eaters, brown bullheads, carp, they keep absolutely everything they catch, size doesn't matter)

Tie on the heaviest weight you're confident casting, cast it as far as you can. When you reel in, pinch your line between your thumb and fore finger to remove twist. If the problem persists, do it again, then before doing anything else run the reel under hot water, as close to boiling as you can get. This will reset the line's memory and should stop it.

How much meat do they get off of fucking 5 inch sunfish and perch? There's like 12 different things that could be happening. You're gonna have to give the specs what are you throwing? What line is this? What's the real? Have you removed any of the spacers? Are you noticing that the line is getting bottom heavier top heavy when responding.

depends on what you mean by "best." they all have pros and cons. j-braid grand x8 is supposed to be one of the most limp and smooth braids but it has poor abrasion resistance. probably the best overall for lighter range like you want though. just go with 10lb, it's very thin, I don't see much gain by going down to 8lb.
>>
>>2582024
too much slack in the line. with a spinning reel it's best to close the bail and pull the line slack out gently away from the reel after each cast before you start reeling. it's more needed when doing overhand lobbing casts that cause a lot of slack in the line. it becomes second nature and can be done in a split second without even noticing. also, really heavy or stiff line can make it worse.

>>
>>2582087
I'm going to put it on a baicaster. Would the j braid be better than powerpro? I currently am using 8lb kastking which is probably similar to the j braid and it's fine but sometimes digs into the spool and backlashes because of that.
>>
>>2581747
When you say a nose hook, do you mean a hook where you tie the line? All my catches on glides and big swimbaits have been tail first, but normally yes I fish them slow. Will definitely give these a try
>>
>>2582100
thin diameter braid is going to do that regardless. it's just not slick enough and it's too fine so it likes to bury itself in gaps. maybe try some thicker powerpro superslick. it has a coating on it. the coating does eventually wear off, but it's noticeably slicker then other braids. almost like a wax coating. maybe bump up to 15lb too.
>>
>>2582100
that's one of the main reason people use very heavy braid on baitcasters. then you just use a leader that is the "real" lb test you want. like 30lb braid to a 10lb leader
>>
>>2582095
For less you can buy plain ball head jigs, clamp them in a vise, and tap the top of the head with a hammer to make it flat.
>>

what kind of fly and how are you trying to fish it
>>
>>2582211
Any fly that will work for it, I tried yesterday on some bluegills and caught 2 but a bunch were playing with it.
Basically casting and give it some movement while slowly retrieving
>>
>>2582213
Try weighted nymphs, with them you probably won't even need the split shot
>>
>>2582200
>>2582213
as long as it is a wet fly, nymph, or streamer, then yes. if you want to fish a dry fly you will need a bobber or a float bubble. bead head and conehead flies can sometimes be cast without the addition of splitshot.
>>
>>2581571
I think 1oz-3oz but I haven't done much surf fishing. Also learn how to rig a shock leader so you don't put a piece of lead through someone's head on your back cast
>>
Caught 5 smallmouth today. Record for me swimbait fishing. 19 pound bag, biggest being two 4 pounders, this being one.
>>
>>2582101
Split ring a hook to the front line tie and use something like a size 1 treble. Dream Catchers has a video about it on Youtube. You might not need it if your fish are on the bigger side of things or regularly eat large bait, but I'm more likely to catch an 7lb smallmouth than 6lb largemouth in Canada so every bit helps.

I understand, but I’ve handled a lot of largies, smallies, and stripers on my boga and only 1 caused more damage to itself. Ironically that was today, had a smallie pop a hole in its mouth from the boga. Wasn’t the one I posted either.

most longer ultra light rods will fling ridiculously light lures a decent enough distance if you're using 4lb line or lighter. especially if they are moderate action. wind is your only enemy at that point.

I use a 5'6" ultra light rod with 10lbs braid, 4lb leader.
I have a 6lb braid on reserve but i think the 4lb difference doesn't matter as much as the rod that's less than 6ft

what are you doing to break them? I have several-year-old $20 shimanos that still work and even feel smooth. don't pull snags with your reel or rod. use drag properly. don't lay them down in sand/dirt. what kind of fish do you target? just buy a Daiwa Fuego CT for $80.

been fishing a far northern deep water lake for the past few days, only have a dated linear sonar for fish finding
entire lake is surrounded by a band of flats that are completely devoid of any life except minnows, structure and dropoffs only yield infrequent strikes from pike in the weeds, and nothing else
bass come out to feed at night but nothing else
there are supposedly tons of walleye- when going over very deep areas, the sonar occassionally blips large schools of something suspending 40ft off the bottom in 70ft of water- what the fuck is that? what is the best way to get to them, finesse jigging?
>>
>>2582952
>what the fuck is that?
Perch
>>
>>2582952
In clear water lakes, walleye normally pretty strictly only bite during low light periods. Try trolling weedlines, dropoffs, or rocky areas with a crank as close to the bottom as you can during the evening, or during windy and rainy days. They can also be feeding in shallow windswept areas (Even just a few feet deep) when murky water is getting kicked up. They could also be keyed in on eating whatever is making those deepwater schools in which case catching them will be tougher.

> the sonar occassionally blips large schools of something suspending 40ft off the bottom in 70ft of water- what the fuck is that?
Without knowing what lives in the lake you are talking about, my guess would be some species of whitefish, probably cisco. Depending on where you are, could also be goldeye, kokanee, rainbow smelt, or shad off the top of my head. Lots of open water schooling fish species depending on the lake.

When nothing wants to bite what is your go to setup that always changes your luck? For me, it's inline spinners.
>>
are walmart rods acceptable? I basically just pond fish with some crappy uglystik sp1102 and I have no idea what its specs are. Is a medium rod good enough for both bass and bluegill if I use 8lb line?
>>
>>2583110
that is a decent first rod and 8lb test is enough for bass and bluegill
>>
>>2583130
it's quite old and falling apart so I was hoping to pick up something newer and start fresh. so a medium rod isn't too heavy for bluegill? everything I see says ultralight. I mainly wanna do bass anyway with a texas rig setup and maybe some spinners and the like
>>
>>2583132
Unless you’re trying to winch in snags and lily pads or you want to get into throwing big swim baits, you should be able to use a medium light or light rod for basically any largemouth you’re likely to find. They aren’t great fighters and don’t get that big. People use stiff rods and heavy line for bass because they fish heavy baits or are tossing lures into heavy cover, not because they need them to fight the fish. If you’re dropshotting weed lines, throwning normal sized cranks, or Ned rigging or whatever, you can use whatever fits your lure weight. I’ve caught 6lb largies on 4 lb test and a size 500 reel on a 4 piece UL rod.
>>
>don’t get that big
Unless you are specifically fishing trophy bass water.

Sorry, incomplete thought.
>>
>>2583095
>For me, it's inline spinners.
same, when I can't get a bite i just throw on a gold panther marten or black/orange mepps and almost always land something. Pike, walleye, bass...anything. Last year had a really bad windknot so the lure was sitting on the bottom for a few minutes and reeled in a brown bullhead after untangling the line. They catch EVERYTHING

I was thinking of focusing on panfish atm with just a basic bobber, weight and worms. Would a medium-light rod, 10 lb mono with a #6 hook be fine, or should I go smaller? Also, where I'm fishing at has bass and walleye atm, would they hit my hook that small, and if so, would my 10 lb line hold?
>>
>>2583184
no smaller than #6, they will swallow it easier if you do. even #4 for bigger panfish.
>>
>>2583193
Really? I am pretty inexperienced and trying to gather as much info as I can. Should I maybe even go for a #4? There's also trout nearby too in the lake, the water is pretty clear too, like, clear enough you can see the fish. Any other advice I would really appreciate it. I've had very limited success with very small spinners.
>>
>>2583195
it depends on the brand/line/type of hooks. there is some variation. the smaller the hook the easier it is for them to just engulf and swallow. granted, reacting to the bite instead of just letting them run off with it unattended can fix that greatly, small hooks just go down their throat too fast with no resistance. you can also weed out catching the smaller fish by going up in size.
>>
>>2583199
Many thanks. So it seems like reading the chart, a #4 and #6 would be kind of a safe all around bet for panfish? Also, would I be able to snag other fish species nearby, like bass or trout on that size?
>>
>>2583205
yes and yes. the success rate with bass will be lower, but as long as you have tension on the line they will get hooked most of the time. especially the smaller ones. the only downside of those bigger #4 and #6 hooks with panfish is that you will get lots of strikes from smaller fish pecking at the bait, but once again, have tension on the line at all times and you will know the difference between a peck and a fish getting hooked. also, incase you are uber-noob, NEVER put bait over the point of the hook, or even close to it, if the point is not exposed well, fish will swallow it 100% of the time.

Thanks. Also, how do fishermen usually go about fishing? Do they have a target fish in mind, or just try to get whatever, or is it a hybrid of the two?
>>
>>2583383
The size of the loop will determine what will be able to eat it Certain fish also prefer certain colors But you shouldn't worry about that yet. You'd probably be targeting blue gill and bass
>>
>>2583383
There's a lot of different disciplines of fishing. Some people target specific species and tailor their tackle around that and others target as many species as possible. Some people care only about quantity caught, some care only about quality and size.

There's a multitude of different rabbit holes to go down when it comes to fishing.

Closed season is almost over, perch and pike fishing soon. Got any tips for me, anons? I'm relatively new and not very good at it yet.

So far I've been doing as I've been initially told: about a dozen casts fanned out with a relatively quick bait (spinnerbait) to see where they're at and if I get any action I switch (ned rig shad) to take it more slowly - if not I move spots. But I'm having trouble getting a bite in the first place.

I try to match the bait colour to the water and weather and I keep my bait small to have a chance at small perch. I also spend some extra time fishing alongside reedbeds, lilies and bridges, or wherever else I think pike might be hiding.

I don't care about size for now, just want to catch more.

I'd consider bringing live bait with you to get an idea of where they're hanging around. I put a night crawler on a jig head, you can swim it back or let it sit and bottom bump it. After I catch a few I will switch to whatever small plastic, typically a paddle tail and keep catching them.

Time of day, and weather plays a part. I'm not great with that. Before a storm front or cool front comes in. When it's cloudy or overcast. Have been good times for me.

In my area the fishing has only recently become consistent, in last few weeks. Everyone I've spoken with says it's been a tough year.

I'm figuring out that fly fishers are actually less autistic than normal fishers. Anytime I encounter another fly fisher, it's a normal human interaction and we talk all about what we're fishing for, good patterns in the area, good spots, etc. Anytime you encounter someone bass fishing, you could yell "tight lines" and maybe get a grunt out of them. Local reservoir:
>extremely deep in the middle but I don't have a boat to get out there, quite clear near shore, rocky bottom and heavily eroded shores, only structure is man-made rock piles and plastic crappie attractors, huge with multiple access points but I've only fished a few of them
Local park lake:
>12 feet deep at the absolute deepest, most of it is shallow to the point that boaters sometimes brush against the bottom really far from shore, filled with logs lakegrass and what I think is some kind of watermilfoil, water is murky and sometimes covered in algea, most of the shore has a lot of trees and submerged branches, has a small fishing pier that's usually occupied, have caught most of my fish from here
Local creek:
>mostly ranges from ankle-deep to shin-deep but has wide patches of navel-deep water, rocky, shores are choked with knotweed, brush, and occasionally rock walls so only a few points are easily accessible, water surges dangerously high pretty much any time it rains, have never successfully caught a fish from it but have had spinners swiped at by bass

I admit I tend to go for really small lures. I usually fish with curlytails on jigheads and inline spinners, but the fish in the photo was on a Rebel Crickhopper I'd been wanting to try out. I also have a bunch of unused small soft plastics and micro crankbaits, along with a couple of Ned rigs and larger crankbaits.

Thanks anon that seems to be it, apparently the lake I caught it from has several species of sunfish and limited nesting grounds so they hybridize fairly frequently.

picked up a gx2 from walmart and some new baits. hopefully i get a little more luck now than with whatever mishmash i had before that I found in my parent's basement. I got 330 yards of 8lb test. the rod takes 200 yards of 8lbs. how do I know when I maxed out that 200 yards without going over when I'm putting it on the reel?

Went to bass pro and got what is, to me, a very nice light rod and reel combo. Took her out the other day with no luck but hopefully when I take her out this Saturday I nail panfish all day. It was cold when I gave this my first try and it was really sensitive compared to my other rods, so the combo made it hard to control. I will get it down though

Looks decent
The net will be good in creeks and rivers, if the bite is slow look for crawdads under rocks
>>2584389
You should be about 1/8 inch or 3-4mm from the edge of the spool with your line
>>2584392
The reel in this post looks properly filled
Also good luck anon

I'm a new "fisherman" and bought a baitcaster. I spool it up completely, tie on a spinner and weights, press the button and......GIANT rats nest. I didn't even get to cast it once....

I now understand how to set the brake and tension and handle the rats nests better but wow that was a nice start. I had to cut the line and respool it.

will bluegill bite a 1/8oz rooster tail or is that too big?

if it does it might be hard to get the treble out of it's mouth since their mouth is small. that goes for lots of sunfish species. that happens with even smaller trebles than what's on those.

How many different spots did you fish? How many beaches how much or did you stay in the same place the whole time?

Can anyone explain reading tides to a retard?

So my rod is starting to break all over so I'm going to order a new one.

I'm looking for something that isn't too big (I fish mostly for perch and trout in small - medium rivers using spinners and stuff), non telescopic is preferred and of course not to expensive. I don't really have a budget and open to all suggestions, but the better the price/quality rating the better.

ultra light models if you also do stuff like using trout magnets, but light models if you only do spinners and hardbaits
or
> https://www.lews.com/en/shop/rods/wmcsr
(the 1 piece split grip models only, the others are for jigging.)
shorter models will be more "crisp" and allow you to cast better under low hanging trees and such, otherwise the longer 6ft6 and 7ft rods will load up better and be preferred.

What kind of lure am I looking at here?
>>
>>2584611
Best to start off with a spinning reel since it doesn't really do that. Baitcasters can be rough to learn on.
>>
>>2584676
you just look at a tide chart ? No way to tell in person other than looking at water lines on objects in the intertidal zone.
