Gear's the least enjoyable aspect of the outdoors but, when you're sitting bored in the office waiting for your next trip, it's one of the few things you can do to scratch the itch a little bit (second behind route planning). That's why I try not to be too judgemental about gearheads. Personally, the only thing I really enjoy about gear is gradually figuring out over time what equipment is really essential, and what's just redundant. For instance, when I see someone with a cheap pair of sandals tied to the outside of their bag, I tend to think they've actually put the miles in. I used to think that hiking poles were vaguely ridiculous, but now I've done a long, remote multi-day hike (and, as such, necessarily carried a heavy pack a long way) I know how useful they are.

I have so many more uses for one of those little folding saws than I do for a hatchet but they want the hatchet larp, I had to go to like 4 or 5 stores to find a folding saw near me while every store was loaded up with useless hatchets and axes.I say this as someone who has had hatchets since I was 10, they're neat toys but for 99% of stuff a saw is better. I'm not processing firewood out there with my hatchet and with a saw I can make easy precise cuts for anything I want to make.Also american stores don't have non-toxic oils to put on your knife or anything, what the fuck do I put on this without buying mineral oil online? I asked at multiple stores around here and the people were all confused on why I would want to sharpen my knife or have a layer of oil on it. There's got to be something simple that I'm missing, right? I see the sharpeners sold all the time but not the oil you're supposed to use with them?

My loadout for an 18 day hike in central Australia.Trangia because I'm poor and haven't upgraded to a gas burner. I didn't bring the rain jacket in the end because it was too bulky. The camp-slippers (borrowed from my dad) were pretty shit and fell apart by the end. Next time I'd just bring a cheap pair of flipflops. The foam roller was because I had a knee injury. Only 300g and super useful plus makes a decent seat.
