It's very funny to watch poseur bushcrafters who show their brand new equipment without a single scratch or any dirt and after uploading a photo to instagram they put it back to the closet.

Like why do you even need so many expensive useless equipment? What for? You can enjoy outdoors in comfort with basic tools and stuff.

That's a Yugo backpack. Coleman's has them for ten bucks. You can change the shoulder straps to change it into a haversack/man purse, and it has a deployable dump pouch.

Gear's the least enjoyable aspect of the outdoors but, when you're sitting bored in the office waiting for your next trip, it's one of the few things you can do to scratch the itch a little bit (second behind route planning). That's why I try not to be too judgemental about gearheads. Personally, the only thing I really enjoy about gear is gradually figuring out over time what equipment is really essential, and what's just redundant. For instance, when I see someone with a cheap pair of sandals tied to the outside of their bag, I tend to think they've actually put the miles in. I used to think that hiking poles were vaguely ridiculous, but now I've done a long, remote multi-day hike (and, as such, necessarily carried a heavy pack a long way) I know how useful they are.
>>
>>2533618
It's a Savotta 339. I have it. It's okay. Not a lot of comfort with heavy loads, and there are some questionable additions to it, like the zipper, which is only a vector for moisture to seep through.

Looks like Varusteleka removed it from their site. Must be discontinued.

>>2533967
The pack is actually decent for a day pack. Anything else with that vintage charm but larger will come with a frame - the LK35 and Norwegian Bergen come to mind. Again, much bigger. The savotta S is an option, but much more modern with all the MOLLE on it. The veshmeshok is also an option.

>>2533490
The bag is used for sure. So is the stove. Cleaning your gear for a family photo like this makes sense.

I have so many more uses for one of those little folding saws than I do for a hatchet but they want the hatchet larp, I had to go to like 4 or 5 stores to find a folding saw near me while every store was loaded up with useless hatchets and axes.
I say this as someone who has had hatchets since I was 10, they're neat toys but for 99% of stuff a saw is better. I'm not processing firewood out there with my hatchet and with a saw I can make easy precise cuts for anything I want to make.

Also american stores don't have non-toxic oils to put on your knife or anything, what the fuck do I put on this without buying mineral oil online? I asked at multiple stores around here and the people were all confused on why I would want to sharpen my knife or have a layer of oil on it. There's got to be something simple that I'm missing, right? I see the sharpeners sold all the time but not the oil you're supposed to use with them?
>>
>>2536259
Wel it depends on the steel, for carbon you for sure want to apply oil to prevent rust, like you would on axes and swords but most pocket knives that are sold around here are almost always stainless, (west Europe ) and also depends on the stone, not all stones need oil and diamond sharping plates can pretty much be used dry, some people only use a strop with stropping compound. But i guess this was not what you ment. What knife do you have?
>>
>>2536259
Also yes gimme saw any day, hatchet is for at home splitting the firewood
>>
>>2536243
Wait I smell toast
Also where did the term 'loadout' even come from? Some video game? It's an odd way to describe one's gear if you think about it
>>
>>2536290
I just have a cheap mora, says carbon on it. One of my moras already rusted after repeated use in poor conditions, even with stainless I want to treat my stuff right and oiling will only benefit them.
>>
>>2536311
It's just the equipment that i spawn with.
>>
>>2536291
But Anon, a hatchet is not for splitting. That's what knives are for.
>>
>>2536351
I've given my moras a light coating of canola oil in the past and it's helped. It has a pretty heavy patina on it though.
>>
I don't even carry a hatchet or saw any more. Just a morakniv and a fillet knife.
>>
>>2536556
Actually anon, the spoon is for splitting. Common misconception.
>>
>>2536351
oh yea great knives those mora!
if you threat them well they will do the same to you! and yea is pretty much always good to protect metal whichever type it is!

if you cant find oil or don't have it in the field and can't find a way to get something like it, you can just wipe the blade clean every day after use just make sure you don.t touch it, the skin grease can have some acid properties that will make it rust.

but that's after the sharpening, around here we have some great belgium stones that can pretty much be used with spit or watter, great for in the field
>>

Since stainless water bottles don't weigh much more than plastic, I don't find it weird at all. It's possible he just liked that bag and wasn't obsessed with making everything ultralight. It may be possible he just isn't a bitch.

It's possible that I've been the faggot this whole time. My loadout for an 18 day hike in central Australia.
Trangia because I'm poor and haven't upgraded to a gas burner. I didn't bring the rain jacket in the end because it was too bulky. The camp-slippers (borrowed from my dad) were pretty shit and fell apart by the end. Next time I'd just bring a cheap pair of flipflops. The foam roller was because I had a knee injury. Only 300g and super useful plus makes a decent seat.

I could eventually cut down a redwood with a SAK, given enough time. Pocket saws work fine for the size wood most normal people are cutting at camp.

Nta but i would much rather fell a redwood with hatchet than a pocket saw.

Every time. I've used a pocket chainsaw before, I'll use one again, it'll work fine, and there's not a thing you can do about it.
>>
way back when i was a kid they used to make those pocket chainsaws out of something not-bikechain-y and it actually worked really great like two times before it snapped.

Thrifty/10. I assume the green thing is a hammock; do you have a tarp in there somewhere?

are bladders a microplastics risk? they're made of silicone not plastic. they shouldn't be, right?

Yes, bushcrafters are gearfags.
They only talk about gear and brands, and the trips they do to use that gear are always lame. They never walk beyond 10 minutes the nearest road.
>>
>>2555975
Microplastics are a spook. Small enough to pass through the blood brain barrier, yet somehow large enough to fit perfectly into estrogen receptors...

Offgassing is what you should look out for, silicon is fine, thats why theyre made of it.

probably the best alternative to smartwater bottles and nalgenes then.
steel and aluminum bottles suck ass in the winter. and titanium ones caps always grind and leak.
>>
>>2556043
Yup, silicon is pretty cool.
You could just get an insulated stainless bottle.
Or knit a cover for it you fucking fag.

It's almost like there's different polymers used in plastic, which break down into different particles. Here, let's try to make it even more simple. You know how shape dictates function for proteins, right? The body combines different amino acids to create proteins that have different shapes. So these plastics are made up of a variety of chemicals. Some of these chemicals, like BPA, can mimic things in the body, such as hormones. They will attach to the same receptors your natural hormones will attach to, which can activate processes in your body like that hormone would.

Other chemicals in plastic do other things. Plastics are complex. There's a lot of things in them. You? You aren't complex. You're simple. By choice. Pick up a book.

Long story, but I'm getting back into camping after going through Scouts and about a decade of camping maybe once a year. Do people unironically go out like this? I'm shopping for a new kit and I'm rock fucking hard at how good the gear is these days. Why would you want to go back to waxed canvas and shit?
>>
>>2558913
Its a larp. Everyone nowadays is Ultralight or bust.
>>
>>2533443
People want to use these packs because, aesthetic. 5 miles in to a backpacking trip you’ll be ready to sell your soul for a Mystery Ranch or Osprey pack.
>>
>>2558918
I’ve been down the ultralight rabbit hole. Spent thousands on gear and been backpacking over 100 times easily. Imo the meta is:
>really comfy and advanced suspension pack(Mystery Ranch Terraframe or Osprey AG system)
>try to get ultralight titanium durables like stove/pot/utensil
>don’t skimp on the sleeping pad
>rest is ultralight stuff
>don’t take bs you don’t need or isn’t super value added

Just don’t make the mistake of getting a Dyneema pack with a crude/spartan suspension.
Saving 3lbs on the pack by carrying an uncomfortable pack isn’t a long term strategy if you’re serious about putting miles on trail.
>>
>>2558913
It's for fun. Or if you don't feel challenged enough. Not for serious tours.
>>
>>2558913
Preference. I have a waxed canvas bag and I love it, especially during the winter months.
>>
>>2553783
Are you retarded?
I'm assuming you are retarded and think the saw is a nunchuk.
>>
>>2558913
>Why would you want to go back to waxed canvas and shit?
Sturdy, simple as.
With thick Canvas, Cotton & Leather you have water resistance, ripstop, fire resistance & warmth of course it weighs more but only softies dare to complain
