Acanthamoeba. Nasty little single-celled freshwater parasite that gave me the most unholy eye infection you could imagine. It took 9 and a half months of aggressive treatment to get rid of and I have permanent vision loss in my right eye. It's very rare but I just happened to get fucked over and I'm lucky I didnt need a corneal transplant after it was gone

To answer your question in a way that doesn't involve brain damage. Rucking heavy with improper footwear. Probably too tight, without the right socks. If at an incline the boot will just squeeze your heel right into the back there and not let it move. Repeated squeezes with heavy weight on your back and you get that.

i doubt the army gave him boots that were 2 - 3 sizes too small. actually, if his boots were too big the same thing could've happened. nope, i think this was a bitch ass nigga feet problem. probably never walked barefoot anywhere, never wore boots, drove places that were within walking distance his entire life. hopefully he got callouses after this and was fine and never came here and posted 50 paragraph diatribes about why trail runners are gods creation and everyone should use them even in swamps, eroded badlands, and on mount everest

idk, they were ahead of us by 20 yards or so until they stopped to take a breather and we passed them

I don't know shit about combat boots but they looked pretty thin and unpadded, and just based on their neckbeards and matching pants I assumed they bought whatever was cheapest at their local milsurp store

They keep giggling like beavis and butthead with whatever they were talking about, and when we passed them on their break one definitely said something about "and kay said these pants were too hot, i feel fine" while taking a breather and water break on what is maybe a mile long concrete loop that soccer moms run without water

I've only had Merrells second hand (goodwill or hand-me-downs from family) and every single pair had the sole separate after my first hike in them. I just assumed it was because they were old and dry rotted, but maybe they just suck.

Retard alert. Plenty of people with baby feet do long hikes without rubbing off half their ankle. This is a case of totally ill-fitting boots and either (best case) a real tactical emergency or (more likely) a negligent officer. And a soldier who was unfit for service for weeks afterwards.

>carry outrageously expensive but otherwise shit and heavy gear
>severely sleep deprived
>shit boots and clothing
>"SUCK IT UP WALK IT OFF"
>end up injured and crippled by uncle sam before seeing any action
>thank you for your cervix

Sometimes I really wonder what makes military in general so hopelessly retarded? Like I get it with the training and being prepared and going through tough shit and all but this is one of those things like sleep deprivation and heavy gear that could be massively improved by contracting proper brands like solomon or some boutique outdoor brands, recruit more personnel to rotate shifts by increasing salaries (I mean come the fuck on a tax payer paper military tissue costs a fortune and you can't afford to pay recruits more?) and overall use your resources properly which US especially is incapable of.

There is nothing worse than a injured, sleep deprived grunts swinging loaded guns around at each other or falling asleep limping to whatever objective they have to do.

Current US troops stand 0 chance on the ground against ruskies or chinks with the massive retardation that goes on in training and in action.
>>

wtf Australian army lets us wear Garmont and Salomon, the issued ones are Redbacks which I don't if people outside Australia wear. Honestly the issued ones are ok despite people bitching but you can very easily get tax deductible gucci ones that are nice just for casual barracks wear at the very least. Toughguy bullshit and lack of trust between officers and enlisted. The guy is right, russia and china are probably much worse in that regard, but most euro armies are much better. And the best of them run circles around americans in exercises.

Lol the eastern militaries are much worse. Russia has only recently started issuing socks for example. Before that you got foot wraps like some medieval peasant. You can go on telegram right now and find pictures of soldiers rations that expired in 2013, as well as the Russian MOD complaining that many soldiers have been exposed to botulism.

To answer the OP question, frostbite, took a year to fully regain feeling in a couple fingers.

>It's shit quality because they have to be made in the USA
They are legally obligated to buy US products when outfitting soldiers and every apparel company in the country has outsourced their work to sweatshops in China.

I work with a guy who is the last producer of printed neoprene wet-suits for the navy. He can jack the price up to whatever the hell he want's per suit and could sew them with shit quality if he wanted too because he has no competitors. I doubt boot manufacturers would care any more then he did. They got a massive ass contract to fill and without the proper funding most producers have to cut corners to make ends meet.

retard tier take. the russian army stopped issuing footwraps when they started issuing "modern" boots. they were a necessity with the older kirza jackboots, more specifically the newer model, with the strap. pic related.

>>
>>2447376
Eh, I'm pretty sure medieval people used footwraps as well.
That said, germany used them until WW2, east germany until the 70s (I think) and finland into the 90s, and they all found them quite serviceable. The main advantage is they dry faster than socks, so if you're in the field for a while
>>
>>2447387
*for a while it's pretty nice to have. Combinations of footwraps and socks were popular as well, you can use footwraps to draw moisture from the boot while the wool socks keep your feet dry. It also extends the life of your sock (though that's less of a concern today.)
>>
>>2442217
I have no doubt the army gave him incorrectly sized boots. They have you just stand on a sizer at reception and take about 3 seconds measuring then throw you boots in your bag as you love down the assembly line. DOD contractors jew the fuck out of the military. Dudes who spend a lot of time in their kit like infantry, SOF, SF, etc, are typically allowed to buy their own gear outside of stuff like armor plates and helmets as long as they stick to certain brands (crye, mayflower, arcteryx, salomon, etc). SOF guys get a ton more leeway with this and are even usually issued the gucci stuff.
The main reason you see some units restricting gear to issue-only is because dumb broke-ass privates try to buy airsoft shit like 5.11 or Condor and the stitching on their LBE or plate carrier blows out on day 2 of a week long FTX and they're fucked.

Worst in the sense of OP's pic?

Nerve damage from an ill-fitting climbing harness. I lost all sense of touch on the skin of my front thighs. After a few months it was partially restored, but instead I had bouts of feeling burns or freezing (it was just the nerves flashing signals to my brain), and there was a spot which still didn't have any sense of touch. I honestly don't know how long it took to recover, a couple of years I guess - after a while you grow used to your thighs suddenly feeling on fire, and you stop caring. Then one day you realize it doesn't happen anymore. All in all it wasn't that bad, it didn't stop me from living my life.

In case you wonder how it happened, I was too skinny to fully tighten the harness around my waist, so it slid down an inch, and pressed against some tendons going from the hip bone to the groins. Those tendons, in turned, pinched a nerve going under them - the nerve sending signals from your thighs to your spine and into your brain. I wore the harness for a day, and discovered what had happened the next morning. I think it's called paresthesia meralgia or something like that.

All in all I'd rather pick that over amoebas or losing my heels.

That's called Meralgia paresthetica. I have had it for years, still do. I thought it was lack of blood flow until I saw a doctor and described it. Immediately told me what it was. A lot of men get it from wearing belts too tight.
>Meralgia paresthetica (also known as lateral femoral cutaneous nerve entrapment) is a condition characterized by tingling, numbness and burning pain in your outer thigh. It's caused by compression of the nerve that provides sensation to the skin covering your thigh.

>Tight clothing, obesity or weight gain, and pregnancy are common causes of meralgia paresthetica. However, meralgia paresthetica can also be due to local trauma or a disease, such as diabetes.

>In most cases, you can relieve meralgia paresthetica with conservative measures, such as wearing looser clothing. In severe cases, treatment may include medications to relieve discomfort or, rarely, surgery.

Just look at military recruiting commercials. It's all faggot shit, niggers, my two gay dads, bribing beaners with citizenship, strong empowered women, trannies, etc.
The only thing america can do at this point is throw money at things, and even that is starting to dry out.

story from Germany last week.

>a woman hiking found a trash bag on the trail.
>she got closer and opened the trash bag
>inside it was a huge wasp nest
>as she opened it the angry wasps swarmed out and she suffered so many stings she had to be hospitalized.
>>

>>at least three recruits end up pissing themselves the first week either because they don't scream loud enough or they can't remember the entire wall text to address the drill instructors and end up getting IT'd and screamed at by three DI's at the same time
military culture is so retarded but so are the people that "serve" so it suits them
and grunts only tolerate it because they're not actually being forcefully conscripted to face certain death

You're either a retard or a vatnik (but I repeat myself). Afghanistan was not a military loss but a political one - an acceptance not that we couldn't keep afghanistan pacified, but that it was not worth the cost. Similar constraints apply in syria. And russia, as you know, has nukes, which makes direct confrontation impossible no matter how strong or weak either party is otherwise.
For what it's worth, I share your doubts that the US army, especially most of the infantry, could stand up to competent enemies. But russia has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt it is not competent, and china has given no clues to suggest they are (not that a war against china would be fought on the ground anyway).

I can believe it. I had a coworker whose knee gave out suddenly and catastrophically on a long march in the military. Nobody believed something like that could even happen but it's true. can you redpill me on footwraps?
youve convinced me to switch.
>>
>>2458685
Wrap correctly or it will suck
There are different styles, russian style is more secure but only really works with jackboots (or wellies I guess), german style works with ankle boots
Different materials were used historically, cotton flannel, wool flannel, wool/cotton blend, possibly linen
Footwraps can be combined with socks, with socks inside or outside. Historically inside, but that's probably to protect the fragile wool socks from rough leather
There's a reason neither thru hikers nor soldiers have adopted them much, for SHTF the higher durability would be a real boon.

Idk man, they might have sunfire missiles but it doesn’t matter that much when we have FA-22s and pilots that actually know how to use them to establish air superiority, our own missiles that can actually hit targets accurately without requiring huge barrages, superior tanks and the maintenance and logistical capacity to keep them running, and a whole swathe of other advantages.

Lack of Water.

if it's so damn expensive why is it so low quality? where the fuck is all the money going?
>>
>>2442192
I work as a waiter and believe me shit happens, yesterday I did 11 hours straight on the floor.
Laugh if you want but get out a calculator and you'll quickly get the issue.
You do 50 hours a week in 10$ shoes and you can suffer foot injuries.

People with money for proper shoes don't know the absolute misery of having to do serious shit without them.
Last Wednesday my shoes fell apart mid service and I was captain duct tape for the whole day.

I've seen injuries on school camps when parents go out and buy new shoes without any idea of what they are buying.

I've had hiking shoes fall apart in the snow, in the jungle, I've had to use plastic bottles as camp shoes while my army boots dried out.
>>
>>2464324
You get this issue when logistics issues things on a numerical basis that aren't strictly identical.
I don't know about the US but often you'll have magazines which constantly jam or only fit some guns but not others, if you get a mag that feeds reliably into your gun you guard it carefully, conceal it from other soldiers and carry it for years.
You've got that base camp stove issue where one guy is in such desperate need he'll rob someone else.

Then you've got the issuance issue where logistics doesn't fully appreciate how things like boots and mags can't be issued numerically.
They send ten pairs of boots for ten men, and if there's a spare it's unlikely to fit the guy who breaks his first pair.
Stealing boots off dead people is a military tradition, I've never seen boots left at a grave. Maybe a helmet, maybe alcohol or sentimental offerings- never boots.

Another issue is the political difficult in issuing good boots to forward infantry but lesser quality boots to rear eshelon or fucking office staff.
Typically everyone has to get the same, those physically closest to supply get the good shit and high ranking officers in the rear will pilfer shit going to forward elements.
Not even the US army could get good boots to the front, many armies couldn't get a single pair of good boots to the front.
Often you have to rotate a unit simply because how confounding it is to get them equipment in the supply train.

Since this thread has army theme too.. I remember one time going on about 1L a day during a training ex for a couple weeks. That's for cooking and drinking. It was fairly hot maybe 30-35c and patrolling all day, assaulting positions etc. And occasionally since we were trainees being punished for fuck ups by doing shit like running up hill holding packs above head. Dripping sweat off the chin much of the day. One guy got delirious and ran charging at a rock with his rifle during a patrol. I almost passed out a couple times. Lack of water sucks ass. They had forbidden us from drinking from any streams etc around but guys started sneaking off in the night to drink or trying to quickly scoop a bit as they walked through one without being seen. One dude ran a couple kilometers with all his sections water bottles and filled em up from a small lake at night. Sounds retarded and it was a bit but definitely taught water rationing and mental toughness, I suppose.

I had a either a bobcat or coyote stalking me in the woods. I was following it with a flashlight as it was following me, all I could see was its eyes, it was obvious he was interested in me. I was under prepared for a fight with a hungry animal. I had an otf boker knife on me, which I guess is better than nothing, but I wasn't mentally prepared for it. If you've ever been around a wild housecat that was ready to attack if you came to close, you know even with how small they are that you don't want to fuck with them. In the case it was a hungry lone coyote, even worse. I'm obviously fucking retarded for hiking in the Ozarks mountains at night, especially with there being badgers, black bears, mountain lions, coyotes, copperheads and such. I carry a sub compact Glock, bear spray and a ka-bar now. A 9mm wouldn't put down a grizzly, but it should do fine with a black bear, assuming I'm accurate. it'll definitely put down a coyote or mtn lion. Besides that, just a general feeling of dread in some parts of the forest at night, if you couldn't tell by now, I get off on being in places I shouldn't at times I shouldn't. I go deeper in the woods over time, and I'll likely fuck up one of these days.

Durability and quick drying mostly. They also absorb more moisture, being made of cotton (at least partly) and because they're more material in total (the fabric is more dense than normal knit socks). With the russian method they can even be rewrapped with the wet part up the leg so it dries while you're still wearing it. Basically, when you're wearing traditional leather boots (or perhaps even wellies) you can keep them dry by switching footwraps considerably easier than by switching wool socks.
Disadvantages are they take time to wrap and destroy your feet if you fuck it up. Even if wrapped perfectly, they're harder on your feet than wool socks. So if you don't have a problem with wet feet, for whatever reason, modern socks are better. You might try combining socks with footwraps to get the best of both worlds - this is something that was sometimes done historically. Probably works even better now because you can get very thin and still durable wool/poly blend socks.

I wanted to move to a more upscale brand after, but now I work almost exclusively in offices, so I didn't buy it.
