Thoughts on vanlife?
>>2431996Looks bad for your back and judging from the yuppies doing it on jewtube, I'd say it's not for the true outdoorsman. good way to fuck hippy chicks though.
>>2431996i love it when they park on old logging roads out here and leave their trash and feces strewn all over the place.just give it a few years, and as economic conditions continually decrease, more people are going to be living out of vans, shitting up every single open space and wide spot in the road. And it won't just be retarded trust fund youtubers. maybe the locals start scalping the parasites, maybe not. (hopefully they do)
Over-hyped and over-priced.Been wanting to do it since I was a kid, but then van-life got popular. I ended up buying a 95 Toyota Pickup w/ Canopy & building a camping setup in the back. Less room than a van, but over-all its the same experience.I paid a total of 5k for my set up. 4k for truck, 500 for materials, 500 for other 4x4in upgrades. Highly recommend for anyone looking for an alternative.
>>2431996Every life is good if you have a qt hugging you when you go to bed.
>>2432001irl lootboxes. unfortunately they probably wont have much of value unless you strip the van for parts. maybe some drugs or something idk
>>2431996Before the trolling really gets going: I do this part of the year and its the best thing Ive ever done. Its not for poor people though. I have a 30k van and spend about 1k per month and I am fairly frugal.>>2432000>good way to fuck hippy chicks though. Not really, there are tons of them on insta but its moslty thirsty men out here. The chicks out here are not really hippie chicks but wanna be influencers They are not easy to bang at all even if you make friends with one, Mostly they hang out with others like them.>>2432001>leave their trash and feces strewn all over the place. This more a homeless problem , most vanlife people do not do this. Homeless hippies in vans and busses are a different group altogether >>2432003This is great advice to see if this stuff interests you. Guys with this setup make up a good portion of the people out here on extended trips , they are having a blast but usually if they go full time or at least months out at a time like me, they get a van eventually >>2432014I find this life better if you are single , the couples I meet fight over bullshit constantly
>>2431996almost exclusively trust fund larpers, burningman esque weirdos, techies that give up after less than a year. i remember looking into it and its actually a lot less practical than just getting a camper. people that do it do it for the aesthetic and have extra cash to burn
>>2431996It’s very much a Southwest thing. Such a small space is prone to condensation issues, which leads to mold issues. People in the Midwest and South find this out pretty quickly.
Why not just use a car and sleep/cook outside when the weather is decent?
>>2432017Kek 1k per month? I did east coast of Australia, picked up kitted out van from German tourists for 3k cos they were flying out that weekend. Already had drawer fridge I just fitted solar panel and replaced house battery Did weekly shops just like home and stayed at headlands or campsites mostly Best investment was tinder gold, pulled one root a week by searching along my route and chatting before I got there. Was good for getting washing done and bit of local knowledge
>>2432031> One root a weekYou didn't need to roast yourself like this
>>2432052Covering few hundred kms a week gives you access to a lot of sluts
>>2431996>Thoughts on vanlife? In theory it signals that you're a complete failure and a burden on society. In reality only people with way too much disposable income can do it with any comfort.
>>2431996Its just homelessness that costs you money.
>>2431996New age hippy idea to escape modern society while still funding big oil and purchasing walmart food
>>2432003>over pricedThat all depends on your view of over priced. I live like an hour drive away from Seattle, rent every where for a beat down not even 1000 square foot apartment goes for 2k a month. Cheaper to have a mortgage than try to rent
>>2431996kinda like ityou have overlanders who do their things.then you got """overlanders""" who pretend they do the same thing.car campers, actual van-lifers, you name it...and now social media is flooded by young, poor, naive, clueless kids doing basicly the same with clapped out sprinters and transits using ikea and second hand gear.its a bit of a wake up call for both parts, the hardcore guys realise its not necessary with the latest 150€ alucab coffe cup when one brought from home does the same, the naive vanlifers learn a thing or two about cars when they spend more time building a house inside a van than making it work.both share the same end goal when it all boils down.
I've got a ford transit xlt high roof and converted it myself. I stopped living in it immediately because I got a job as a carpenter and I needed to take baths after work every day. To be fair, i got it right before covid hit because I thought the city sliggers were going to cannibalize eachother. Still, i've taken it on some crazy road trips. It's really fucking great to have the freedom to sleep on a full twin bed at a rest stop after driving for like 12 hours. Nothing like being the only guy at a montana rest stop nestled in a small valley. Now I mostly use it to transport/store my kayak and bike or as a mobile break room for cold refreshments. It was also pretty useful to have what is essentially a small box truck while i was working. I wouldn't reccomend it as a lifestyle, though. Not having a proper bathroom really fucks shit up. No, a fucking 6 second shower and a chemical toilet don't count
>>2431996Not a wise decision. You are spending money on a depreciating asset that requires constant maintenance and could be destroyed by someone else's stupidity at no fault of your own. Not to mention, internal combustion engines are on their way out and as gasoline becomes scarcer, you will be spending a small fortune on it.A better idea would be to buy a piece of land and live below your means, while investing the rest of your money.
>>2432172>internal conbustion on its way outYeah fucking right, maybe in 90 years. Nothing is as energy dense as gasoline. Freight cannot replace diesel with batteries, and there's driving an electric vehicle coast to coast is a fool's errand.
>>2432175You could be right. But as time marches on, the cost of oil and diesel will most certainly rise. For me, I'd rather have some land and become self reliant then spend thousands on fuel.
>>2432118Ironic, we live in the same area.No quality van here is sub 15k. Sure its cheaper than rent after a few months. However, you over estimate the ability to save money now-a-days. Average wagie has no chance to save that kind of money to afford a van. Most of them would be stuck with an interest rate of 10%, and at that point you're not saving that much money over renting.Out of my handful of friends/mutual friends, I don't think any of them have more than a couple thousand saved up.Even if you try to go for a shittier van, like the ones in the 5k price range, you'll end up with a 250k+ mile 20 year old Ecocline.
>>2432180You're not wrong, but if you make money you can feasibly do both. I have stocks, my van, and i'm planning on getting some land (and driving my van onto it.) My idea is to build a big warehouse sort of thing with a really nice bathroom and then just roll my van into it. Bedroom hermetically sealed in the van, office/workshop on the outside, bathroom is a luxury money pit because goddamn, bathrooms rock.
>>2432191That sounds really comfy anon and seems like the best of both worlds.
>>2432001this is homeless mostly and Ive seen retards hauling big ass rvs do that far more often than anyone in a van.
>>2432109lol>>2432071imagine caring>>2431996Depends if youre just doing it to camp its no different than buying an RV.If your plan is to live in it full time though you'll pay nearly as much as you do on rent for gas and shit. Its not for everyone but basically camping all the time its pretty comfy. Lots of people still being ski bums in winter and just doing whatever in summer. If youre looking for an excuse to live cheap that aint gonna happen, but if you work while doing it for whatever reason ski resorts are very accommodating for the lifestyle, most workplaces got employee showers or just get a gym membership. For the summer just work part time or something at a campground and most will give you a site with water and electric hookups for freeIf you got a laptop and its just home but cheaper if your van isnt a pos and youre repairing it all the time.
>>2432194Hopefully i'll pull it off some day. Just gotta keep rolling on
>>2432213Ammendment: i will pull it off someday when I see the right warehouse.
>>2431996Hippie posers and instagram whores.Real van dwellers don't vlog.
>>2432215Have you considered just purchasing the land and getting a prefabbed bardominium? pic rel.
>>2432003Yeah, a used pickup seems like a much better option. These off the shelf campers have existed for decades, but of course they’re now retardedly expensive as well ($25k, though Alibaba has them for closer to $15k). Still, a small Dodge sprinter has a 10’ cargo area, and a lot of that will be taken up by a bed (a twin mattress is 38” wide). A truck bed camper leaves 8’ of living space with the bed shoved over the cab.
>>2432221Maybe when I retire. If I retire. If I can save enough money.
>>2432221I have, but to be honest it seems more prudent to purchase an existing warehouse since a lot of the construction is done for me. Where I am there are a lot of rural warehouses that have septic and electric which would lower my initial costs significantly
it's glamourised hoboism unless you have a vehicle that can go offroad. any place accessible by plebs in normal cars is not really worth camping at
>>2431996fuck please stop posting couples cuddling it really really hurts me so bad
>>2432455behind all that cuddling shit is your soul being destroyed by a mentally unstable woman.
>>2431996my ex girlfriend has been living in a van to afford college. she's been calling me weekly all summer asking if she can come over and take a shower and i blocked the number. lmbo dumb roastie.
>>2432476based and truthpilled. always remember that you pay for cuddles and blowjobs and ILYs with your soul and sanity

>>2432014Life is good if (you have a woman doing something other than absorbing your penis)? No.
>>2432737the trick isn't so much getting the penis inside the woman, it's getting her to leave barring an argument afterwards. =/

>>2432749you dont just say you have diarrhea?
>>2431996they need to stop clogging up the badlands from the looks of it.
>>2432003This is my current set up. I plan to add more to it storage-wise. I need a gun rack & places to hang clothes. I think i'll put more storage/hangers above the windows. But, could live in it if I needed, and it is vastly better than a van.

I do it, it's honestly alright if you're literally autistic. The van was cheap (it's over 30, after all), repairs are easy or cheap enough.Mobile hotspot for internet and a power bank with solar panels to charge my laptop and stuff.Gym in the early mornings for nice, quiet showers.Mostly cook simple vegetarian meals inside, propane stove and a jug for water (I don't mind the same thing a lot).Work remote doing low-tier tech support chat, insanely chill and I mostly just vibe by the woods and read otherwise.Cat keeps me company and if we don't like the weather or the people I can just drive us somewhere else.

I have a camper van that I use on the weekend and it's awesome for that. Sometimes I come home from work on friday evening and have nothing planned for the weekend so I just pack my van and do a spontaneous trip with zero planning whatsoever since I can park and sleep anywhere. The time spent in the van mostly sucks though (everything is worst than in a house comfort-wise), so I don't understand the appeal of living in one full time. When I leave for a weekend I only do it if the weather will allow me to do the activities I want and I basically spend the entire weekend either sleeping or being outdoor.
>>2434819Yeah I'll check fishing reports on a Friday and go park up wherever they're biting down the coast, fish eat drink and be merry then pack up and come home on Sunday. No stuffing around setting up camp and can leave it locked up and secure
>>2434758electric cars on average don't create less carbon emissions until 120k miles. the problem is throw-away consumer culture not the choice of fuel. the bat-shit societal norm of throwing your car away at 100k at its first major service and manufacturers putting plastic parts under the hood and designing things to fail is the problem.
It seems a lot more annoying than a "tiny house" because you don't have space for proper shitter and shower/cleanup
What's for dinner? I'm making beans (for rice & beans).
>>2434819This seems like the best case scenario for "vanlife", weekend trip maybe 3-4 days max. But I don't understand why anyone would choose to live there instead of saving just a bit more for an RV/trailer with all of the necessities like plumbing, electricity, etc built in

>>2436511>ifa few of states and most of europe banned sale of petrol cars after 2030 already, its when not if.currently right now people need to be getting about 40k more miles on average out of their cars before ev's are actually lower carbon emission than petrol vehicles. ev's are pretty good but front-loading all the carbon to the production of the vehicle and start of its lifespan does not mathematically bode well with our throw-away turbo consumer culture where you're seen as a lesser person for not throwing a car away and polluting.

>>2436580teslas are one of the more common cars on the road in my city, which is pretty unusual. there's 2 kinds of tesla owners i observe:- aspirational new money nouveau riche type people who think teslas are luxury cars. its usually their first car over the $50k mark. young tech workers and the likes who buy them for the image they project.- boomers with car collections who recognize teslas are not anything special and don't grab attention. they daily drive a tesla to keep the miles off their ferraris plural and so everyone isn't rubbernecking at them all the time. to them its a cheap car that is nice to drive but isn't a big emotional or financial loss if they wreck it. their other daily driver is probably a f150.
same thing also applies to the compact eco type ev's here but you do also get a third crowd of middle class suburbanites buying those too.

>>2435638Probably a little more than a RTT since the top collapses for a smaller profile.
I've never understood the appeal of van life as a permanent state of living. in order to make it work you need to be a electrician, engineer and plumber. Your also living like a refugee for the most part and parking at walmarts rarely actually going off grid. Better off just having a small van for holidays.

Every one of their concerns and criticisms can be addressed and shown to be just blathering judgmental ignorance. But fuck it.All I'll say is high gas prices mean I have to stay in one place longer than I did before. No big deal.
>>2438843no idea how this conclusion was drawn
>>2438554>£No idea even what the fuck that is
>>2431996A friend of mine has looked at this and my main question is always "what if you get sick"? and similar stuff. So let's say you live in a van. You pick up something really ugly that has you shitting, throwing up, fever so bad you can't think straight.Where are you going to take a shower when your ass is on fire from taking 4 shits in an hour?Where are you going to wash your clothes, even at the crudest level, if you throw up on yourself? What about checking yourself into a hospital, or worse yet dealing with the police, when you have no permanent address or proof of residence or anything except maybe a DL?I am specifying being sick as fuck trying to deal with these things because everyone thinks it sounds like a great idea, sitting in their livingroom with a full stomach. Its essentially giving up most of the conveniences from modern living while simultaneously keeping yourself permanently slaved to the modern world, for what seems to be no gain at all. You still rely on all the same manufactured foods, goods, gasoline, electricity, parts for your vehicle, all of that shit except you are giving up 90% of the benefits you would get from the same system.
>>2439135I guess the idea is that you don't get sick. I have shit health and as soon as I eat something slightly off I feel sick for days. There are people who are like garbage bins.
>>2439135>Where are you going to take a shower when your ass is on fire from taking 4 shits in an hour?I have a portable bidet for messy shits, but if I really need to I could just hang around the gym (which I specifically go to for showers).>Where are you going to wash your clothes, even at the crudest level, if you throw up on yourself?Same place as normal? Either a laundromat or in my bucket...>What about checking yourself into a hospital, or worse yet dealing with the police, when you have no permanent address or proof of residence or anything except maybe a DL?You...you just answered that. Do police in your country make you drive them to your house to prove you live there? Show them your ID, say you're camping, and you're fine. You mostly learn how to go around without getting hassled by pigs too much anyway.
>>2439137>I guess the idea is that you don't get sick. That was the answer my buddy had. I am not going to sit there and tell someone "oh your going hiking? WHAT IF YOU GET SICK AT THE TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN BRO???" but if you plan on permanently living in such a way it has to be considered
>>2439141I should also add, though, that it matters less where you vomit and stuff if you're in the middle of nowhere. Why do I need to make it to the bathroom to vomit when I can just roll over, pop the back door open, and vomit on the ground outside, you know?Worst I've had was a white blood cell...thing. Basically my counts were just fucked for a while.I just stayed close to the city and vibed all day, wound up being fine.
>>2439141>but if I really need to I could just hang around the gym (which I specifically go to for showers).>anon, running a 103 degree fever, shivers in the gym shower surrounded by naked strangers>"this is superior to living in a fixed residence" he says while leaning against the wall and wishing he was deadAlso being forced to use public restrooms or bathing facilities while already sick sounds like a great way to not recover in a timely manner
>>2439144>"this is superior to living in a fixed residence" he saysLiterally nobody says this, anon.Vanlife is preferable to being TOTALLY homeless, the only reason people actually do this is because rents have hit $2K for a roach-infested bachelor on half the fucking continent and we can't afford that shit.If I had more money then I'd totally go for a small apartment, or even a shack in the middle of nowhere, but I can't. I'm just a lonely, divorced autist trying not to die just yet.But it's not as bad as you seem to think it is. I keep a log book of which parking lots are friendly to sleep at overnight, or in the day, and which washrooms are good, and where I can fill my water jugs, and stuff like that. You get used to things pretty quick, honestly.
>>2439147>Literally nobody says this, anon. You seem to have a grounded view of things but this is absolutely untrue. In the process of trying to talk my friend out of voluntarily #vanlife'ing himself there was no shortage of Instagram slideshows of people acting like they met a QT 20 year old indy chick and rode off into the sunset with no worries again
>>2439149Honestly, it sounds like your friend is just retarded. Those Instagram weirdos have $150K decked out modern vans and basically just go glamping once a week for pics. Anyone who has a place to work on their van in the first place isn't going to be living in one, especially not out of necessity.Anyone who seriously thinks the image people put out online is real needs their head examined. It's like honestly thinking the home shows where a part-time dog fart sniffer has a high enough salary to live on the fuckin' Gold Coast in Aus or something.
>>2431996one should labor with their feet firmly planted in the earth. it also pisses me off they don't pay property tax but use municipal services
>>2439135You need to have money for a hotel and access to health care vanlife is not for poor people
>nooo you need to be rich for vanlife nooo please don't compare my IG whore "model" gf to the poors nooo!$10 on propane a month, eat some rice and beans with tea, rotate which Walmarts you sleep at, steal Wifi in the day from McD's and coffee shops, remote drone workYou can literally make less than minimum wage and be fine. The most expensive thing is gas, which doesn't mean much if you hang around one placeFucking morons acting like it costs more than rent to be a hobo get the fuck outta here lmao
>but what if you get siiiiick!!!Then you're just sick, damn. There's no magic middle-class mommy to bring you a spoonful of cold medicine, you just deal with itBunch of little babies I swear to God, can't even imagine how whiny you are when you've got the sniffles at home probably put on twenty blankets and burn oils and run a humidifier and shit, Christ
>>2439135>You pick up something really ugly that has you shitting, throwing up, fever so bad you can't think straight.>Where are you going to take a shower when your ass is on fire from taking 4 shits in an hour?>Where are you going to wash your clothes, even at the crudest level, if you throw up on yourself?wtf kind of sketchy shit do you guys get into? i spend nearly all my free time in the wilderness and havent gotten sick like that ever. thats like 3rd world country visiting for the first time level sickness. maybe stop putting your fingers in your mouth, or better yet WASH YOUR HANDS and you wouldnt get watery shits
>>2439281You'd literally be driven to insanity. I dare you to try that right now, you have the capabilities. Just eat beans and rice only.... Or infact give yourself a 2$ daily allowance on food. See how long you can last
>>2439391He's right and who said anything about $2 a day?
>>2439391Beans, rice, tea. Roughly 2$ a day...I've had friends forced to do what he said, it's a miserable existence.
I live in a Toytota Dolphin which is basically a toyota pickup with a house attached. I have the 22re with a speed. Gets decent mpg for what it is (16), and dead easy to work on. My clutch hydraulics went out last weekend and I was able to replace the master+slave on the side of the road for $45. I have 300 ah of battery and 300 watts of solar on the roof. Running water, fridge, diesel heater, toilet, shower, tv, microwave and stove. Plenty of room to walk around. I have a couch and bed. Life is comfy. I used to pay 1800 on rent, and I've lived in it for a year so I figure I've saved around 21600. (way less than I spent) . Although my current plan is to save up and get back to renting. As comfy as everything is, it doesn't come close to living in a building and have a "normal" life. I'll hopefully be able to sell it for what I put into it. Pic attached is my view
>>2439281Or I could keep my day job and live like a normal person, and retain my hobbies, instead of larping like a fucking hobo lmfao.
