let me guess, you need more
No I'd less. I don't need a knife with a joint on it. Fixed blades are better for outdoor use anyway.

>>2429992You’d be surprised. When it’s cold, steel can be quite brittle. Warm it up a bit, and it won’t break. If you dunk a blade in liquid nitrogen and toss it, it’ll shatter into a million pieces.
>>2430020>when it’s cold>dunk it in liquid nitrogen Some snow on the ground is along ways away from liquid nitrogen temperature.Your steel blade is not going to be affected by 20* weather.>nb4 akshully it makes it 0.001% more brittleNo temperature you are out in will matter to your blade

2020 oldfag here, I have a couple observations from reading these threads for a couple years:>some people save fore weight and just bring a package opener, because that's all they need on their nature larp>some people being a cheap mora, because that's all they'd need until they got rescued and taken back home from their nature larp that got too real>some people carry a good fixed blade, regardless of the weight or what kind of mysterymeat shite you can order from China this week
>>2430276Thanks, I'll read it >>2430285Nice kit>>2430287Also nice
>>2429958There's this guy advanced knife bro on YouTube that does some stupid shit with knives and batons with everything.

It's nice being ready so you're not standing around with your dick in your hand.
>>2430294If I'm carrying all the bits anyway and the ratcheting extension, how does the choice of handle change anything?
>>2430317yeah it's nice to have a little repair kit on your truck while you're driving

>>2430582Yeah, so let me carry a driver handle, along with the Leatherman that already has an additional 7 tools that I use, and gives me the option of using it as a straight handle or a 90, for how the driver handle feels in your hand. You are a dumbfuck. Go back to r3ddit
>>2430583I have 5 vehicles and two trucks. I could rebuild your shit box on the side of the road with either truck. I fix shit for a living. Why would I look at something and go round up tools when I have them in my pocket all the time, and why would I take them out of my pocket to go outside? Would that few extra ounces of weight break you?
>>2430269Victorinox is clearly better
>>2429797I need less than that, 22grams at most.
>>2429797My Opinel sleve was always never really tight and slipped back to open position all the fuckin time.I never felt save that the blade would stay in the upright position. Yea, I need more: an actually safe knife instead of a gimmicky "safety lock" that doesn't actually lock.
>>2430631I have a mut, and the handles don’t close together fully when using a bit like that, making it a pain to turn it like a normal screwdriver>>2430648If you fix shit for a living, why don’t you just have normal tools then?Good luck installing a new breaker or getting into a countersunk hole with you leather man and ratchet bit, retard
>>2430648Why would you carry all that shit in your pockets every day if you have plenty of tools in your truck already? That makes no sense. You probably only use like two or three of those bits anyways lol

>>2430192I was given one of those a cpl weeks ago. I have a few Opinel but this has to be my favourite. It'll get less use than my billhook but it looks fairly menacing. Also it has a brush. For something.
>>2432495its a mushroom knife, the brush is boar's hair and for cleaning your shroomies off
>>2432493Before I decided to keep my autism in check I carried that other nicer Knipex mini wrench in my bag all the time. I used it for bike mainteance but it's so good every time you need a pair of pliers too. I don't use the mini Cobra that much because it has a tendency to destroy what it bites on.
>>2432496I know it's a mushroom knife. I've just never felt the need to groom my mushrooms. In fact I don't think I've ever cleaned a mushroom. Mate says that thing cost £25. Compared to ~£10 for a #9.
>>2432499not him but I think it may be connected to mushroom gathering laws in Europe, IIRC you're required to do stuff such as carrying them in a woven basket to ensure that spores are released, etc.
>>2432501I flick n pick. Also the majority of shrooms I pick are liberty caps. Which my bud knows. That and a UK legal carry Opinel were his idea of a joke. The tiny Opinel can be handy at times and the shroom knife will likely get used for fly agaric jst so it gets used. Another unrel pic. Loch Fyne a cpl weeks ago.
its nice to have if you ever plan on eating one fresh
>>2432505picking makes them less likely to return than cutting. but liberty caps are tiny so cutting isn't so practical. but that's why picking is discouraged.
>>2432507We switch areas each year and don't rape the places. Anything other than liberty caps or very infrequent muscaria I'd be more careful. Penny buns and morels grow round about but I've not picked many ever, just chance finds that I decided were getting munched.
>>2432510yeah its not even realistic to cut with smaller shrooms. bigger bois, it is a bit better to cut them than pick, but its not the end of the world to pick one if you don't have a knife.

>>2432754Folders aren't meant for innawoods tasks. Get a fixed blade.
>>2429958genius. why has no one thought of this before?
>>2432764Nonsense. I’m not batoning it, it’s for light tasks. The pack axe is light and handy enough for things like de-limbing kindling. A good-quality folder for cutting lines and small tasks should be fine.

What a fucking abominable hobby, holy fucking shit I hate them, I hate them. They ruin everything they touch, they slowly corrupt everything because they do not really use anything, they just go through whatever "test" routine they see on youtube and then assign a score based on how the thing performs, they never go out and actually use it. >>2434129what knife are you buying
>>2434129That's what I thought about my last knife purchase but it turns out some knives are way better than others for certain tasks, and there is no knife that's really good at everything.
>>2434132I'll talk about it when I get it. It's such a beautiful knife and less expensive than the one I was looking at before.
>>2434133This is true but how many knives do you carry around? a big knife, a small knife, maybe a sak. That's it.
>>2434137I carry a pocket knife small random stuff, a mora bushcraft black for all my wood working and fire staring etc. and a grohmann survival #4 for food/hunting/fishing related tasks. I could probably do without the pocket knife, but the grohmann isn't built for bushcraft, and the mora is terrible with food due to the scandi grind.
>>2429797recently i have started carrying this old and cheap folding knife and a leatherman instead of my regular puukkofeels good to have nothing fighting against me with the backpack waisbelt but pants arel definately more heavy and i have less room in my pockets
>>2434141See? You don't need more than two knivesI'd rather spend good money on two quality items and then forget about buying moreof course there will always be a better knife than the one you currently own for the specific task you're using it for, so what? It will take longer or you will have to make a little extra effort. For another task your tool will do better than that one. There's no point buying that much stuff.
>>2434144You're right, consooming for the sake of it is pretty lame. But I thought the grohmann would be the only knife I would ever need. Turns out I was wrong. I kind of wish I could get away with taking a single blade with me.

>>2434399Took this for /k/ yesterday but may as well post here too since it's got the actual knife in it. >>2434933Personally I wish I could get the same knife but with a bottle opener instead of the spey. It's annoying that GEC is the only decent company that seems to make a traditional with a bottle opener and they're unobtanium. I also wasn't really set on a Stockman, but I've been wanting a Case for a while and don't have any dealers near me, and I was near a Tractor Supply that had a bunch a few weeks ago so I went in and this was the one I liked the most.

I have three Opinels in various places, the trick is to disassemble it and boil the handle for a few minutes in candle wax. As it heats up, the air trapped inside will expand and boil out. Once the wax cools it gets sucked into the fibers and lube as well as protect the handle forever. Also, the beech wood darkens and shrinks a bit, which makes it open/close easier. The liner lock is ok, never felt unsafe to me.I also have this Victorinox Workchamp which i use when i tour with my bike for the tools.
