Decided I'm going to repurpose fish carcasses as bait for lobster pots, hopefully turn it into another meal.
my only question is properly weighting the pot.

in my defense we had a change in weather with cool wind from the east, didn't see others get anything either. before we had to go, i got some soft bites on both of my ground rigs, let my son hold the line so he could feel them nibble our bait. what a shame, should've switched to smaller leader and hooks.

its a bathing lake, was too cold to take a dip tho. son was calm most of times while fishing. we saw 2 carps and a trout swimming nearby.

learn how to fish, then go back. if you can't catch a bluegill at least, you're doing something very wrong.
>>
>>2364856
not that anon but I've been trying to target bluegill all spring and have only been catching carp and catfish. Maybe anon just needs more time on the water, and to switch up his baits. If you ain't catching fish, move to live bait. Just about anything will hit a live bait
>>
>>
>>2364856
we have no bluegills in germany, my biggest catch was a 50cm eel, 45cm pike second largest. but that was 10 years ago
>>
>>2364895
if you want to 100% catch something, target small abundant species. insects are a sure way, even artificial insects work. I use these all the time, you won't get skunked. either let it float on the surface., or slowly sink. I even catch largemouth on it. it's especially effective in areas like overgrown ponds that have a lot of real insects as prey.

I have caught the hell out of some bluegill since, in a few different locations. I just had to change up my tackle a little bit, change up my rigging a little bit, and use a smaller bait. That being said I went out yesterday and only caught little catfish again lol. I'm just not always there at prime time bluegill feeding hour, you gotta spend time on your water and pin down when each species of fish is active. Because yesterday midday, the bluegill were not active
>>
>>2364920
also I say bluegill when I mean literally all species of panfish, I'm aware that picture was of a sunfish
>>
>>2364662
I do this, and I will also keep the bits when one gets torn up by a fish. I put them on a small crab lure, and it gets a ton of hits. I think the fish see it as a crab enjoying a nice piece of shrimp and they want to eat it.

not that anon, what not would you use or would you clip it to a snap swivel? I'm a fucking champion of the double figure eight knot. You can just larks head a lure on, and take it off in like 2 seconds. It's easier than a snap swivel and a very very strong knot. If I was tying direct like anon was, I wouldn't see a problem using a trilene knot. The only knot I cannot stand is a clench knot. Clench knots are fine if you're using it for your sinker on a breakaway rig or something. But if you're tying your lure or hook directly to the main line with a clench knot you're probably a ten year old
>>
>>2365315
>>2365251
also since re-looking at the picture. It might actually behoove anon to learn how to tie a loop knot like people use for crappy jigs. I use loop knots on my rooster tails and spinners to great effect. I feel like it gives it a lot more action and freedom of movement in the water

If it works for you then it works for you. In every instance that I would tie a clinch knot, I'd, in every situation, personally rather use a trilene.

Used picrel today. And the trout liked them, but i had some problems. First of all is that they don't float that much, it takes two of them just so a 2# size hook stays off the ground. So i had to keep a ten inch trout bc the hook got stuck and i could not use the big hooks bc they would not float. Also the bait came off the hook when it hit the water too hard wilst trowing, so i put it on the line behind the hook but that did not really help. Am I just using it wrong? Pls help a retard out over here

Dunno about the eggs but I have used the berkley trout dough a bit. The quality of the dough varies a lot (dunno if it's different colors, batches or scents or it has been too long in the warehouse?) Some dough will stick to the hook, other just don't even form to a ball/stay in shape and just fall apart instantly, even though it's the same type just different color. Can't imagine some food coloring or whatever they add is going to chance the consitency of the dough so much.

I am personally a big fan of spoons. Namely sinking spoons. A small one will catch creek bass all day long, the amount of time after the lure goes in the water until you start to reel it determines the depth that the lure is at. I like to take the treble hooks off of my spoons and put a nice single hook on and let that spoon go all the way to the bottom and then reel it up through the water column as I retrieve it. I've caught all kinds of smallmouth like that.

the smallest Mepps don't need to be retrieved fast in order to keep them off the bottom, unless it's the deep running models. size 1 is the biggest I'd go though in shallow water, even some of the 1/8oz ones don't fall that fast. I have been slaying fish with them lately in shallows. worst case scenario, you can even cut two of the treble hook shanks off to make it less snaggy.

>>2365927

It's really strange to me how euros are so against C&R. here in USA all the conservation groups support C&R. "Let it go, let it grow" type deal... Pic related is a Trout Unlimited chapter map with a catch and release graphic.
>>
>>2366505
Only germany is against C&R. Pay-ponds in US also don't allow c&r as linked here >>2364775.

Pay-2-fish ponds are commercial fisheries. You think a farmer would let you hook his chickens in the inside for their throat/gut, then let you release it and not pay(just hypothetically) Or you go to a store and just damage the good?
You damaged the animal in a commercial fishing-farm therefore you take it, its the same in Usa.

Merishart moment.

I use panther martin #2 all the time in riffles and pools less than a foot deep. You have to be retarded to get snagged. Lots of fish caught that way. You just need to use the appropriate sized spinner for the specific hole you are using. If a #2 doesn't elicit strikes or follows, I'll size up to a #4. Floating mono, say trilene xl 4lb will help with avoiding the spinner from touching bottom, once you have the feel for it. I've got yozuri hybrid 4lb on right now.

what the fuck is a "pay pond" and do they really exist in the US? Why would you pay to fish in a pond in the US when there are literally bodies of water everyfuckingwhere?
>>
>>2366533
Because they're stocked and managed with quality fish instead of a bunch of highly pressured 12 inch largemouth like most public ponds.
>>
>>2366536
so... basically shooting fish in a barrel? unnatural as fuck. if it has to be stocked, it's not natural. reminds me of the asian fishing in concrete pools wearing tournament clothes like they are Bassmasters or something. lol

>>
>>2366505
I never keep fish. Ever. I fish for sport, not for food. To me, it's a kind of common sense : if everyone kept everything they caught all the time, there wouldn't be as many fish and the fish that are wouldn't be as big. I'd like my kids and grandkids to be able to fish the same spots I did. Catch the offspring of the fish I caught when I was their age. I like that idea.

>>2367101
lol... thats why they have limits to what size fish you can take.
fishing is fun but im 100% there for food, if I cannot at least refill the energy I've consumed going fishing I have failed in my eyes.
>>
>>2367124
I don't know. Might not be the full story with that write-up. What I do know is that I really do have better luck with gold spinners in muddy water versus silver ones. Hell, I've even switched to gold blades a lot when fishing clear water just because I seem to have good luck with them. I don't know why.
>>
>>2367130
so in other words... just have some of each and do your own testing in your own areas. at the end of the day, whichever works for you works. sometimes "anecdotal" evidence is perfectly reasonable evidence. that's why I always test my own shit out instead of just following guides.
>>

>>2367137
I have been told by boomers several times in a local murky lake that red is king. Their reasoning is that the main prey is crayfish which are either red or green depending on the season. Somestimes colors are selected based on things like that, natural prey.

no, but it's similar. discontinued model called Mepps See Best. The blade is plain on one side(gold) and on the other side it looks like that, a black decal with colored dots inside of the black.

>>2367141
>>2367146
gold mepsi with blue dots has always been best imho
at one point you could not get them from anywhere and i have like 8 of them but little afraid to use them often so i don´t lose them
>>
>>2367148
you can always make your own decals to put on like that, to test different colors.
>>
>>2367152
I only fish my vintage ones when in my boat so I can pull up over snags to free them. either way, I don't think they are that different to models they produce now, certain parts are just aesthetic as long as you choose the model that has the action you want. you can however luck out with the Grab Bag special and receive older discontiued models. apparently they have a big bin of unpackaged discontinued models for that purpose.
>>
>>2367153
>you can always make your own decals to put on like that, to test different colors.
well now i have three sizes of gold and silver, so if they get scruffed up i could do exactly that. but i don't believe that colors do it as much as contrast and flash, of course different colors do provide different contrast at different conditions..
>>
>>2367164
that's why you only put the decal on one side. you still get the flash of the one side, then the colors on the other. mepps did this and still does with many models.

why are people still fishing with jighead?

My lure bag has 3 plano boxes, one with softbait, one with hardbaits and the third has some assortment of jigheads, weights and other rig accessories, one pocket has small boxes with assortment of hooks, swivels and clips, the other pocket has some small spools of leader lines and tools.
Quick and easy access for everything I need on site, not heavy, can carry it by shoulder strap.
Other than this I have the big box for the rest of the fishing gear, main lines, floats, feeder basket weights etc... and another medium bag for carrying bait, wafters, pop-ups, boilies and feeding accessories. And this is the smallest I can pack for the entire fishing stuff.
>>
>>2368084
Some places rarely sell the texan hooks and the stuff you need for various rigging, and old school jighead is plenty from china.
For example Decathlon here sells texan hooks but not the weighs and other riggings needed, some small tackle shops sometimes sell weights but only in odd varieties and even then 2-3 bags at all. Jigheads is a plenty in every weighs.

I add up the cost of their gear when I’m out. You can be sure they’re shit birds when they won’t wave, nod, or even bother to talk shop in passing on the river. I mostly have bottom of the barrel gear (waders and luggage) for the winter months, but the best fishing months here you can wet wade in anything. The river that runs through my town is a fucked up freestone with big boulders and random holes, so I bought a $3 ski pole from goodwill and spray painted it black. It serves its purpose and keeps me safe. All it takes to start by nymphaea by and slinging some wets is a $40 alley express Tenkara rig.

>>
>>2368716
Depends on the fish, but experience itself will always be #1. Look for fish types after you actually catch them. Most videos are short, so take some time and watch a few for the best technique. It's so much easier if you have something tactile to work with. It's all just just theory until it's applied.

For what possible reason? Cnr is by far the norm when it comes to wild fish anyway

don't do the boomer overexaggerated hookset. it's rather unecessary unless you have shitty dull hooks. give a little tug with the pole sideways, a lot of hookups are on the sides of the mouth.

> be me
> pull my jon boat up on a wooded bank to shit
> taking shit
> hear people talking
> something runs up behind me, it's a friendly dog
> hear someone coming my way and calling for it
> getting closer
> pull my pants up without wiping
> person comes and calls their dog
> they didn't see me shitting luckily
> check the map on my phone, I was right beside a walking trail
> keep fishing all day with a big skidmark in my underwear
>>

Just buy some fishes you like and practice. I did this and it became so easy after the third attempt.
>>
>>2368832
use topwater or light lures that sink slowly, that way the second you cast and they hit the water, you can reel fast to keep it high up in the water column away from the bottom.

Put a worm on a size 6 or 8 hook and a bobber 1' up the line and cast it near the bank or brushy spot and you are guaranteed to catch something.

Based. I never see these around anymore. My dad always kept one in the back of his boat, just a perfect sized wooden stick with a lead core. One good whack and the fish is dead as fuck and ready to be bled. Doubles as a great baseball bat for hitting rocks when the fishing sucks.

Yes they are among the best along with crappie.

That's what I did, the bass fishing here is fine, but it's just kind of boring and as summer goes on gets really tough. Bluegill are just so fun on ultralight rods, lures are way cheaper, and the eating is better.

this thread still going. we went fishing in a bathing lake which used to be a gravel dig site. no plants growing on the shore or something, we had wind from the east, it's a good indicator for changing weather. it was so windy infact that I didn't try out my leightweight bobbers. gonna catch some the next time we go fishing, even bought a cool dam reel on a fleamarket for 10€. letting my son pull a small fish, gonna be great

Maybe go fishing by yourself first to get back in the swing of it and then bring your boy once you get it down?

Going backpacking with some friends, will have access to some nice lakes and streams in Oregon. Any tips on trout setups to take backpacking? Will a 5' rod be enough?
