>Talk about fishinit must feel so retarded to fish in a swimsuit
>>2360704Nah, who gives a fuck. Melanoma looks stupid.
bros, wanna start fishing againhaven't fished in 12 years and live right on the LI sound about 3/4 out on the island. Anything worth fishing up that I can eat? I plan to surf fish out here, is it even worth it or nah? What's a recommended reel and rod if surf fishing is worth it out here?
Need a new mono to mono knot, Surgeons knot?any recommendations?
>>2360715Depending on leader length, I usually stick with a blood knot, but you really should try several and find your sweet spot. What pound mainline to what pound leader?
>>2360709John Skinner is considered a surf fishing legend and is from Long Island area. He has a couple books and a bunch of free videos on youtube: bass, blues, flounder, weakfish, porgy, tog, etc. You also check out On The Water mag, has a lot of content for New England / Long Island area.
>>2360720about 2-3ft of 20lb leader to 20lb mainI'll check out the blood knot cheers
>>2360728>On The Water magoh this is good informationi was worried there would be nothing noteworthy cause it's a shithole, but i figured there has to be something since it's on the waterany recs for reel n rod for surf fishing
>>2360735>since it's on the wateri meant on the ocean
>>2360735Honestly just get anything because you don't what type of fishing you will be into and you will likely want to get some other gear down the line anyway. All the cheap combos at a sporting goods store will catch fish. Since there is no trees or bushes or shit to get snagged on you can fish long ass rods comfortably. For fishing bait you will at least want to be able to cast 2 ounces as 1 ounce is usually only good for the calmest of conditions. On the other hand if you just want to throw lures your typical medium heavy rod will work just fine besides giant striper plugs.
>>2360739yeah but i know for sure i will either be doing surf on the ocean at first, or the same on kayak in a few months
>>2360743If I was you and planned to start beach fishing then try kayak fishing I would get a 9"6-12ft surf rod and if enjoying get a nice shorter rod for kayak, you wont want to use a surf rod on a kayak thats for sure.
>>2360733Check out a few and try them yourself. Some people seem to "get" a knot or connection better than others.
>>2360778yeah figured that was going to be the move
>>2360700I still haven't caught a non-dink bass this year and it's really upsetting me.
I did at least catch a few big bluegill but one of them may have came off a bed. Which is weird because I didn't think they'd be even close to spawning already.
>>2360544you sound mad
btw to the salt anons, I think it's funny me poking at you made us all come together to talk about the differences between fresh and salt without insulting one another, that was a good convo, you guys are alright, hopefully one day I can hit the surf and catch some real fish
>>2360836Cute lil fellaHere is my cutest catch from today>>2360838based, and correct about "they seem to not know fucking shit."I'm just a simple rock/beach angler doing what has worked for me while looking for a feed.
>>2360833How many fish have you caught this year though?
>>2360715I use a triple surgeons or seaguar knot for similar sized mono to fluoro
>>2360837YoU sOuNd MaD! !!! !
loop knot fgt here who wanted to use leaders from the same line which I got spooled on my reel. Thx for curing my autism about knot strength, bought 100m of 0.46mm trilene xl smoothcast for 5€ of which i will make leaders
>>2360541>zoomers made fun of me saying fishing is boring...Probably just depends where you are. I teach in North FL and most of my boys are addicted to bass fishing.>>2360840I usually take Fishbrain posts with a grain of salt. Never know when a bumpkin tourist swears he caught a huge gar ice fishing and posts a pike. That being said, spotted gar can get pretty far north, but I've never heard of them that far north. Could be expanding their range, I guess.
>>2360715I do uni-uni. The thing I figured out with leaders is to use whatever knot you can tie best. Even if a certain knot is technically stronger, it’s not worth it if the knot is bulky and fucks up casting and catches weeds and muck.
sometimes I wonder where ded toof girl is today and what she's thinking about at night
>>2360735Okuma Nesika or Rockaway rod and Penn Pursuit IV 4000 or 6000 reel. depends on the size of the fish you are gonna mostly be targetting.

>>2361097> 56%a little too generous. 50% at best.
>>2360963It's 50/50 in my experience, half love it and half think its cringe, boring, and for old people. We have longnose and spotted gar in Canada, mostly around Ottawa and Southern Ontario.
>>2360963here is actually survey data for spotted gar distribution
sun rise in one hour and its fucking freeeeeeezing out cunts.. gotta get out there before the gooks though

>>2361323> he doesn't wade in after his snags
>>2361189nvm those yellow dots are from crowd sourced data and the outliers in the north east have since been scrubbed
>>2360838I love both fresh and salt water fishing, and all points between. I will say one thing: where I live the salt can be more consistently inhospitable, and I can fish fresh water nearly every day a year, and I sure as hell try to. Ice and lightning are the only things that will stop me, and I have learned to have pretty consistent luck year round.
https://youtube.com/shorts/9eOmyzaEO0c?feature=share Check out my new video
Going to Azores and these are some of the fish available for the talking.. very excited to get on a charter, and perhaps even fish off the rocks
>>2361456No
>>2361456Ah sweet dude another femboy fishing video, I was waiting for one
>>2361484Nice. I've been able to catch most either trolling a bomber long a behind my board, using a 3/4 oz silver spoon, or a gotcha plug, also 3/4 to 1 oz. I even had a dolphin run with my little tunny. I knew I was into a monster, and I thought I had somehow hooked the poor bastard. I was using calming tones to see if I could get close enough to see where it was hooked, and it let go of the fish and stuck around for a while. Little shits, but clever little shits. They've helped put me on fish several times and not stolen my catch though. This was a first.
>>2361484Dusky grouper looks like a fucking thumper
bros i just gotta come out and say it:im terrible at fishing and i'm giving up
>>2361544it's okay if you want to give up, fishing will still be here if you want to come back some day. if you aren't relaxed and having a good time its not for u.

>>2361549thanks anon, i decided to look up fishing vessels taking on inexperienced deck hands just to get out on the water with someone who knows what he's doing. this time i'll at least get paid if i dont catch anything.
>>2360845Nice. Spanish mackerel? You caught that fishing from rocks? What country are you in? What rig did you use?

>>2361591>no fish
friend called me because he saw half melted pond from car window and asked if we could take my canoe and go fish, drink and camp there for few days next weekwhat a treat because largest open water i have seen this year was like 5x10m area not counting canal rapids where you are not allowed to fish
>>2361323Day 2>had to buy offset hooks and chebu weights>lost 4 lures for pike>lost 2 spinners for trout >lost about 100m 0,14 braid>lost about 50m 0,10 braid>one spool is almost empty70€ gonetogether with yesterday 110€fuck fishing this is a money throwing eventi didn't even have one bitei was in sum 15 hours fishingnothingnot one fishnot one bite

>>2361795have you tried buying braincells? Might save money in the long run
>>2361607Cut them in 2-3 inch parts and use a knocker rig. The head is the best for Grouper and Snook
>>2361795Are you sure there is even the fish your are targeting in the water? Pike often just stay at certain spots.Use topwater lures. Float + splitshot lead+ bait for trout. Or bottom lead and floating bait(power bait) + long rod(+3m), hold the rod tip up and reel in very quickly this will avoid a lot of snags.Buy cheaper gear(with lead weights you can buy the cheapest), but it should still be serviceable, so you have to find a sweetpoint.
>>2361847>Are you sure there is even the fish your are targeting in the water?should bei caught 3 trouts last weekbut this weekend nothingmy problem is that the lures get caught in stones or branches and i don't get them outthe spinners are hanging in trees because i cast them too wide>topwater to avoid thisi am not sure if our pikes like topwater baitsbut i will try it
>>2361850>i am not sure if our pikes like topwater baits Why wouldn't they
Went on a company "team building" fishing trip out of Port Canaveral FL. Caught 4 roughly same size as picrel. Wasn't able to keep any because out of season. Was alot of fun though. Some people got some keepers.
>>2361882
>>2361882What kind of fish is that and why >>2361886 you hang them on the board?Only do freshwater fishing.
>>2361896Red Snapper. Regulations, the season doesn't open till July.Just to show off the catch before getting filleted.
>>2361882sea fishes are really coolcongratsbut i wonder how fishing can be helpful to team buildingdon't you compete with each others even more because everyone want to catch the bigger fish?
>>2361899Thanks anon.True I think it was an excuse to go fishing on a Friday instead of working. The "team building" thinking is you are all stuck on a boat 15 miles from shore and have to bs with eachother and have fun fishing. Was great for me since Friday was my 3rd week at the company so got to meet and talk with alot of people I haven't worked with yet.
>>2361886what a gnarly display of fish hanging on spikes from their eye
>>2361912They have been dead for hours. 2 hour ride back to the port.
>>2361922Dunno. Why keep them like that and not just leave them in some cool closed container? They go bad faster and there might be flys, maybe even laying eggs.
>>2361924You should stop guy, you sound like an idiot.
>>2361924They were there for 5 minutes for pictures then cleaned and filleted.
>>2361886how do they keep the birds away?
>>2361932Not sure there were no birds though. Did have a pelican ganking the small fish thrown back at the last spot we fished.
>>2361932They boat I took in the Keys you had to watchout for these fuckers at the cleaning station. Tarpon and a lot of sharks standing by.
>>2361926I am not that guy but it astonishes me the garbage fish harvesting skills people have and then they have the audacity to complain that the fish tastes bad. Is this the fish dead ? Then it should bled, gutted, and on ice.
>>2361943Those fish were kept on ice the whole time. Shit the 2 Mahi Mahi were cleaned and cooked at the restaurant next to the dock.
>>2361724>weak-ass buster shitWhat does this mean?
>>2361829Nice. Good Luck!
>>2360700>Went from being an awkward introverted autist making lures in the garage of his dinky house with only his dog for company to an extroverted family man with a popular YouTube channel and a successful specialty businessI can no longer relate to him
>>2361912agreed
>>2361943If a fish has been on ice for hours then hanging them up for 5 minutes for a photo op isn't going to hurt anything. You people are just trying to flex on randos on the internet to make yourselves feel better but you just come off as a pompous ass.
>>2361966idk he's still awkward and he knows it too
>>2361970Yeah I don't get it. Just wanted to post my fishing trip. Life in the ocean is savage, brutal, and swift for most fish. If you aren't hanging by an eyeball because some boomer or retard like me hooked you then you are torn to shreds or swallowed whole by a bigger fish.
>>2361970You don't know me bro. I don't go on charter boats because its a total meat factory and they don't give a shit about the fish. Lots of places will forcibly gaff whatever's legal on the side of the boat even if you wanted to release it. They then throw them in giant box to suffocate and stew in their own crap all day. Then you get some mate or dock worker fileting them at a thousand miles per hour wasting meat on the carcass and leaving nasty bloodlines on the filets. No thanks.
>>2362014Fish don't give a shit about fish. It is a free for all in the ocean. Who gives a shit if some fish die in ice so they are dinner. You have a simple solution so you can stay on your pedstal. Don't go on charter boats. I did and don't care had a great time.
>>2362016yeah the pedestal of:1. Selective harvest2. Not wasting meat.3. Eating food that actually tastes good.4. Not starting bubba ass myths about fish because they are to dumb to properly handle meat.5. Not killing shit for fun.
hey bros I want to start fishing (never done it before)I copped myself a telescopic 2.1m rod 7/20gr >see picI live in britanny france and people have told me there are some bass and mullet near me. would this work for them?
>>2362025should be fine for sea fishing yeah, might be a bit on the light side for those type of lures but i reckon you can catch a fish with it. Might take a bit, but that only makes the first one even sweeter
>>2362028should I keep the swivel? some redditors told me to attach the spinner directly to the line
>>2362028also should I stay by the shore and cast into the estuaire or go out on kayak?
Caught my first rainbow trout! They were stocked trout but man it was fun. Nobodys been fishing them at all. I was just using worms off the bottom and man I was slaying trout. I only landed two on the shore. I hooked into five other that fought like hell, jumped out of the water, and spat out my hook! These things are so fucking angry. This one bit my finger while I was unhooking him and cut me clean open! I wasn't even sticking my finger in his mouth, he went out of his way to go and bite me haha. I don't keep none of these fish, I just like catching them. But I hear they taste good.I can only imagine what a proper river bred trout must fight like. These fish are pissed
The other trout I managed to net. Every other one today got off the hook at the exact second the net went under him haha. It's so fucking hard to hold these things.
>>2362022Why are you acting like he went out on a Japanese fishing vessel that dredged the sea floor for every single living thing with a 20 mile long net? He went out on a charter, his company paid the people, and that money in the long run makes it way down to supporting fisheries. They caught fish, put it on ice, and then snapped photos of their catches on the dock with everyone smiling and happy. It's called marketing, and every charter does this.
>>2362022Oh boy we got a live one here. Jesus Christ get off your high horse you smug asshole. You come across as someone who sniffs their farts. I have shorefished and taken charters here in FL for years and have never killed anything for fun. I just fish and eat what the state tells me I can keep.Suck a ball sack not sure why you are even on a fucking fishing thread.
>>2362039Why are you so defensive if you haven't done anything wrong lmao ? Some anons pointed out the killboard was metal and stupid and their intuition is historically accurate when you look at what has been killed just to be the advertisement for Capt Ass's Charter.
>>2362041The fish were already dead and going to be filleted. Stop pretending you are better because you "selectively harvest" or whatever bullshit mental gymnastics you need to make yourself feel better. They are fucking fish. If fish could scream nobody would live near the ocean.
>>2361724bait fishing mustard rice, stay elitist faggot
>>2361943>autistic screeching
>>2362041Ya got city hands, Hooper
>>2362022here we go>implying
>>2362047The topic keeps getting changed every other post so I am not even sure what is being argued at this point. But here is a little pro tip, the slime coat, the blood, and the organs all make meat taste bad. So if you don't have a live well, just stick their head in a bucket of water and bleed them.
>>2362047this is a retard take and you should feel embarrassedyou will be a better fisherman when you learn to respect the fish
I don't know wtf is going on in this thread. I don't keep fish I catch. Very very very infrequently I'll catch a few bass and fry them up. I believe in my states DNR. They have very well informed and well enforced fishing laws. People, for the most part, respect those fishing laws in my state. I know this can't be true everywhere. But live and let live. Just because I like catching them and letting them swim away doesn't mean I need to bully somebody to taking home some free dinner. The only time I get pissed is when the spics fillet the catfish right there on the bank and leave the whole rotting carcass on the trail. Fuck you whoever does that. But just a normal every day harvest fisherman? Who actually cares?
>>2362059I like fishing with catch-and-releasers. occasionally I will yoink a fish for dinner from a buddy. For me its pretty simple - >catch a keeper>put a spike in its brain within 30 seconds of landing>bleed and gut INTO the water>go home leaving no trace
>>2362059The thing you have to understand is that saltwater fishing still has a commercial element that has long been banned in hunting and freshwater fishing. Currently on a lot of the regulations boards the commercial interests is stacked against recreational angler interests and often at the expense of the fishery as well.
>>2362056I was on a charter boat I have no control over that when 40+ people are on a boat fishing. The 4 red snapper I caught was out of season and tossed overboard anyway. The rest were filleted an eaten I imagine. I know the mahi mahi was because I had that with a dozen oysters at the restaurant next to the dock. It was good and fresh. No need to bleed it, straight to the ice was fine.
>>236208740 fucking people on a charter boat? rather stay home cunt
>>2362057I respect fish but let's be honest, they are straight up killers who eat anything they can tear to pieces or swallow whole. Holy shit I can't believe the amount of salt I am getting for posting a damn picture of dead fish in a fishing thread.
>>2362088It was free and I got paid for the day. You stay home cunt.
>>2362091struggling to see the correlation between how fish treat each other and how we treat them.I've got no problem with the dead fish pictures.
>>2362095I treat them by tossing them back if I can't eat them. Simple as.
I had fun on the charter and I understand some posters have problems with charters. I get it, at the same time it was good fun and people took fish home to eat. My only regret is I didn't have any fish to take home.
>>2362059A good amount of fish that get released die anyway.
>>2362103What are you doing to the fish retardyou sound like a gook
>>2362104Yeah man a hook through the mouth with a bard and then dragged through the water to get a selfie wirh some onion eating soiboi and released means the fish survive
>>2362031If you have a kayak, definitely use it, but first get a good feel fighting a fish from shore, then do some field testing of the kayak. First and foremost, deliberately flip it to not only see what your tipping point is. Then, try to right it and get back in. You need to know worst case scenario tactics, because bad stuff can and will happen. The more prepared you are, the better. I would also remove the swivel too, but only because it will change the action of the lure and likely keep fish from striking. Good luck and stay positive. It may take some time to figure out the fishery. If you can, talk to some people who also fish the areas you plan to fish.
>>2362107Mate you sound like an absolute cuntif you are you not able to remove a hook without injuring the fish further I dont think you should be fishing you pathetic onions retard
>>2362113You are a fucking retard. Are you Australian? Most fish released die, simple as. Doesn’t matter how you remove the hook you cunt.
>>2362107I'm on your side about the charter fishing thing, but dude, people work hard to keep sustainable fisheries, and know many techniques and best practices to keep fish alive and healthy. Many species have tagging programs that have proven with great success that catch and release doesn't kill a properly cared for fish. It sucks that people can be assholes, but please don't shit on those of us who have put in great amounts of time learning to keep fish alive and healthy to catch again. I even have bass I have named, like a local 6 lb largemouth bass with a black patches on her body. Weird looking, but cool. I have caught and tracked her growth for years now. I call her Patches.
>>2362103>>2362107>>2362118revive the fish a little bit in the water until he's ready to go. fish like trout can't be out of the water nearly as long as a something like a sunfish. a catfish evolved in brackish water and can survive out of the water a little longer, but make sure you take longer to wake him back up if you're taking a long time to measure him or weigh him. a damn gar's a dinosaur and you can leave it on the bank for two or three hours in the beatin sun and he'll be alright. if you gut hook a fish don't rip him up trying to get it out, cut the line at his mouth, and the hook will rust out. fish accidentally swallow bits of plastic and metal all the time. the enzymes on the inside of their esophagus will dissolve that hook in a couple days. education on fish releasing is important. I fished two small farmers ponds as a boy growing up and we had sole rights to it. my dad taught me to catch and release and I caught countless, countless fish out of that pond of the years that I'd caught years prior. I caught fish I gut hook that survived. I've caught fish out of the river and fish out of public ponds that have scars in their jaw. saying what you're saying is just mouth open retarded
>>2362118Its obvious your lack of skill and respect for the fish is the reason they die when you release them you retarded cunt
>>2362120>please don't shit on those of us who have put in great amounts of time learning to keep fish alive and healthy to catch againAnd unfortunately this extra care we give is useless when there is cunts like that saying "oh well its gonna die anyway!!"
>>2362029swivel is fine, I use them all the time and catch lots of fish.
>>2362120I am not shitting on anyone, I am getting shit on for charter fishing and some weird shit about catch and release. All you faggots hold no moral high ground. You are jamming a sharp barbed piece of metal though a fishes fucking lip. Yeah it will be just fine after that.

>>2362144Well then teach me ole wise one how does a metal hook not fuck up a fish?

>>2362145why do you even fish if you cant safely release a fish you retard
>>2362149Because I can, doesn't mean the fish will survive numbnuts.
Yeah i got a barbed hook through the mouth but some reddit retard said it shouldn't bother me bro lol just swim nigga forget the hook in the mouth nigger.
fuck it why even release fish if they just gonna die!!
>>2362145you choose the right hooks for each job. you can even use barbless. if you are choosing the right hook, you get a low damage lip hook 99% of the time. accidents do occasionally still happen, but you can limit them. certain types of fishing is more dangerous to the fish though, like pulling fish up from really deep where the pressure change harms them. most people. other than keeping fish out of the water for too long, which is easy to avoid, most fish are perfectly hardy. I only catch and release for freshwater, and rarely have an issue. the lip is the toughest part of a fish, and most species don't even bleed from the lip.
>>2362142>>2362118>80 to 98% survival rate>most fish die when releasedEven your own linked article disagrees with you dipshit.
>>2362168jesus christ what a fucking idiotI'm glad one of us checked this faggots link
>>2362049>bait fishing mustard riceI don't know what that means but I don't fish bait and I will stay elitist.
hoping to go out fishing this monday. weather should be good, my other half and i are going kayaking, and im bringing 3 set ups. one frog stick, a little bass jig to chase blowups, and my hyper finesse rod because micro jerkbaits are super fun.>>2362168i assumed it was bait>>2362169>nice>>2362064>>2362059same. if i do keep anything its usually panfish because its easy to get enough moderate size sunfish to make a few sammiches, they reproduce faster, and have less chance for bioaccumulation so i dont have to worry so much about how polluted a waterway is. there are certainly still places i'd think twice about eating -anything- from, though.
>>2362201I don't know why I always thought you were exclusively a fly fisherman. Hope you catch something fun. Getting towed a bit is always a good time.
>>2362205yeah nah im not above bait. fly fishing from a kayak is just hard because fly line tangles on anything it can and i have a hard time bombing casts because waving my arms around can make the kayak turn, and i am far from above bait, but fly fishing is the fun way>pic related, an old ass pic of my multi-circle-hook rig catching a bunch of bait; dink croakers that went out as live bait on a 5/0 circle hook
I'm left handed and cast left landed with a right handed reel.. someone explain why the hell I would want to cast left landed then switch my hands to reel left landed?
>>2362103You realize fish release mortality studies are based on macro level looks at the entire fishing population right ? In freshwater fishing people catch the same fish so many times they get names and are well known...if your fish isn't bleeding and you keep it in the water it will almost certainly live.
Controlled studies have shown that most fish released after hook-and-line capture, survive. Researchers working in Boca Grande Pass tagged 27 tarpon with sonic transmitters and found that 26 of these hook-and-line-caught fish survived. The one fish that died had been lifted from the water for a prerelease photograph. Scientists repeatedly caught bonefish held in a large pond in the Florida Keys and found that 96% survived capture. A few of the bonefish that ultimately died had been caught five to ten times each, which suggests that bonefish hooked and released in the wild probably have an even higher survival rate. Angler-caught snook held in large net-pens throughout Florida had a 98% survival rate. Most of the snook that died were caught with live bait, consistent with studies showing that fish caught with lures generally survive. Spotted seatrout caught in Tampa Bay had a 95% survival rate. Hook position affected survival rates; trout hooked in the gills or gut had lower survival rates than those hooked in the mouth. Redfish survival rates range from 84% in Georgia waters to 96% in Texas waters. Like seatrout, hook position affected survival rates; more than 50% of the throat or gut hooked fish died. These studies demonstrate that catch-and-release-fishing works-most fish that are released survive. By following a few simple guidelines, anglers can maximize survival rates.
>>2362221I'd like to think even a bleeding fish has a good chance at survival provided it was not hooked deep or through the gut or some shit. regardless I'm going to do my best to return that fish with as little harm possible.
>>2360700Just did a guide repair.

Asian here, I keep and eat all the fish I caught except if it's finger sized. Catch and release is only for psycho that like toying with animals, it's like hunting with tranq it's disgusting.

>>2362216you don't. boomer fudd logic made that shit popular. your dominant hand also makes sense to be the rod power hand for fighting powerful fish like in the ocean.

>>2362436Yeah we should all be fishing right now. Good weather here in central Florida today.
>>2362032>>2362033You should take the trout you catch. They aren't gamefish like bass. They are quite fragile, catch&release trout there is a high chance they slowly die after. At least wet your hands before handling them.

I've caught multiple bass that had gnarly scars from either birds of prey or snaggers and they lived. I've caught blind ones who were healthy 4-5 pounds and still were kicking. Like what the fuck is this nonsense. There's certain species you handle delicately, such as salmonids, but some game fish are hardy fuckers. With trout, as long as you keep them in the net and water while unhooking, they always swim off perfectly fine....and I've caught the same trout more than once out in mountain ponds and they always were fine.
>>2362229Bleeding fish are easy to fix. Water coagulates their blood. Unless they're hooked deep in the gills or "tongue" (main artery is in there), the bleeding can be stopped rather quickly with just a dunk in the water. You ever hear the (dumb ass) boomer trick of pouring coke on a fish to stop the bleeding? Yeah. It's the water that stops it, not the sugar or whatever they'll say.
>>2362781I think the carbonation temporarily slows their heart rate or stops it? Not sure exactly but doesn't have any positive or negative effects. What does it mean if you found a condom wrapper and a dead fish where the mexicans usually bank fish?
>>2363103I'm no expect but it sounds like a mexican fucked a fish
>>2363102I think they die from a combination of stuff. Internal injuries from a boat flip, getting banged around in a livewell during runs across the lake, the 2 minute out of water photoshoots, etc. My experience with treatments is from musky/pike fishing. A local guide has a giant livewell and will put a bleeding fish in there with G-Juice and the bleeding stops pretty quickly.

As a member of the palomar gang I have been recently experimenting with the springer knot for situations where the lure is too big to pass through a loop. A deckhand I know on one of the sportboats showed it to me and it's super simple with a smaller profile and has been pretty strong so far.
is the inner diameter if bigger than your line times 2 of crimps actually important or can i just use one for all?for example can i use a crimp with 2mm diameter for 1mm hardmono and also for 0,49 titan/steel wires?
>>2363250I've been using San Diego Jam and Uni knot for mono/fluoro over 40lb. I don't like how palomar seats with stiff material.
>>2363282>I don't like how palomar seats with stiff material.isn't that the strong point of the palomar that you can use pliers to tighten the knot?
>>2363282I've always used a double SD jam for surface iron and yoyo. The thing I like about that springer though is it doesn't eat a lot of leader. I fish a short leader a lot of the time and not having to retie an fg in between stops as often is nice.
>>2361522lmfao
>silver and lead has almost the same density>they still fish with leadout of the way poorfag
>>2363288Yes you can and I do, but with thick material I spend more time inspecting and trying to seat a palomar than it takes to tie the other knots.>>2363291I've been tying to a welded steel ring and using split rings to attach to lures it minimize reties. Unless the leader material gets chewed up or nicked it lasts a while.
>>2363339Yep, I do the same with either a solid ring or swivel, but when I'm shore fishing I get snagged and it usually breaks at the terminal knot. That's more what I meant.

>>2363720your best bet is rod and reel fishing with a hook bait or lure good luck
>>2363722So do I just watch youtube tutorials? Should I look for fishing classes of some sort?
>>2363720Ask your local fishing store. Not a big box store or chain store, an actual dedicated tackle shop. If you don't have one, look into what species of fish you have then go from there. Gear differs from species to species. I would start with lures, you may not catch anything your first time but if you just fish with bait you wont learn anything.
>>2363726just wait I'm sure someone will give you solid advice.definitely learn a few knots thoughif you plan on eating the fish research how to dispatch and gut them before tryinglearning how to properly cast on youtube before trying will probably help avoid some issues and bad habbits

Cut new seats for my canoe out of some inch thick hardwood. The old seats were untreated plywood with vinyl over them. These new ones are just fucking planks off a tree and they've been sanded and stained with love. Now I got my rod holders, stern light, all the leaks sealed, new seats, registration transferred to my name. This 50 year old canoe is in the best shape it's ever been and goddam I love it. Anyone know if it is worth it to pick up a fly rod in the $500 range? What are the best brands for the money?
>>2364067>>2364076I am planning to use it for saltwater fishing and island hopping, maybe bringing a rucksack and a tent with me, wdyt?
>>2364115No reason you couldn't fish it if properly set up, what islands do you mean though?
>>2364097i dont have any experience with fly rods in that range, but i do own a cheap one and a $300 one and theres a world of difference. I do however have a ~$2k light coast spins setup and its absolutely worth every penny, it fishes way better than anything ive ever had before. Not to mention plebs at the water is always mirin if they recognize it, and when they dont and they brag about their $80 reel they get absolutely btfo when i tell them my reel was $1k when i purchased it
>>2364124>its absolutely worth every pennydoubt
>>2364143im not going to entertain this argument any further than this post, but if you want a great fishing experience, having top quality gear is going to do that for you. Provided you can spare the money ofcourse, i am aware that its a lot, lot of money for a fishing setup, but some people enjoy expensive stereo, expensive TV ect. I wanted fishing great, but by all means, if you cant spare the money you can get absolutely great gear for less, no question. But, theres a difference. As it stands i throw 28g spoons further than the surfcaster guys throw whatever they are throwing, and with a lot less efford, that is quality to me
>>2364164I spend as much as I can for certain gear, like reels and rods. They both usually have good warranties and it’s usually a one and done thing, not to mention the functionality is usually perfect.
>>2364164To each their own. Some may call me a poorfag, and you may feel it's worth it, but I seriously doubt the difference in performance between my $300 setup and your $2k setup is worth $1700.
>>2364088I ran the screws in from underneath. I think the part of the reason the old seat rotted through the way it did was because the bolts went all the way through the board and were exposed on top. Meaning any kind of rain or water that falls on the face of the seat would just seep right into the screw holes and start rotting the wood. With the only screw holes now being on the under side, any moisture trying to find it's way to the untreated inside of the board is going to have a very hard time. I used one inch long construction screws, so that including the width of the aluminum seat flanges, the screws won't poke through the top but they'll still have their maximum amount of wood to anchor themselves into. I also know from experience those specific screws will take years and years to rust, so if I ever needed to change it I only have to reach under there with a drill and take them out easy as.This is all without saying the seats were cut so tight that I had to give them some encouragement whacks to actually slide up into the spot they needed to be. In all honesty the seats would hold themselves there with friction, the screws just make me feel better.
>>2364097Yes they are worth it, some of them are 95% as good as the 1000$ rods. Do you know what technique you want to use? There are different recommendations for streamers, regular fly fishing, and god forbid e*ro n*mphing.
>>2364168reels and rods are easily +90% of my spendings, sure a nice braid aswell and shit like that but really rod and reel make the difference for me. And i can easily feel the difference, and its not marginal in any way. i was actually looking for a rod when i accidentally bought the Daiwa reel because i wanted the best possible reel, and i did not regret it. ive fished serveral $500 and $1000 setups to death (reel gives first every time) but this has performed beyond expectations. i used to buy above average shasimo reels but this is not even a competition, my daiwa casts way, way further with way less efford and it doesnt get tired after a year or two. Im not sure exactly what the problem has been but it just feels heavy to reel in, i think it has been the bearings getting aids. Not this time though, its just pure bliss casting and reeling back in
>>2364219you mentioned hardwood but unless its teak or mahogany you are well off painting it with some kind of oil atleast or both oil and a clear finish. even if it is teak or mahogany you would be doing yourself a favor, also it looks 200x better
>>2364224Yes, I am looking for the best 9’5wt for all around use. Mostly nymphs and dries, tho streamers would be nice too. What would you recommend? My $130 cabelas rod just broke, so I am ready to throw down more. I will pair it with the sage trout reel.
>>2364115It's inflatable so there will be inherent risk of popping, but Saturn makes pretty thick inflatables. If it was a cheaper model like an Intex I might say be extra careful, but really with any inflatable be careful. Kaboats can shoot rapids so I think it would be fine. How do you plan to rig it? Anchor up and fish? I used an old Intex sea eagle(I think) to fish when I couldn't afford more, and I did get some punctures. I always brought the pump with me, as well as some quick patch materials.
>>2364164I think Jeff Currier might disagree with you, and he's possibly the most successful fly fisherman there is. Some folks just want to use what they can get, with great success, and others buy bass boats and all the gear to catch 4 total fish.
>>2364290I really like my 5wt Sage Foundation, it can do small weighted streamers (mini sex dungeon), dries and nymph rigs. The other rods I've used in this bracket that I liked were the Axiom II-x and the T&T Zone. Another option is Edge Rods, they use an uncoated NFC blank and high-end components which would make them very light. I haven't used an NFC fly rod but their conventional rods are excellent, the next 8wt I buy will be from them. If you haven't bought the reel yet, consider going with something less expensive and putting more into the rod and line.
Going to be cleaning spinning reel for the first time. My cleaning kit came with both oil and grease. Which should be used on what parts?
>>2364321yeah i dont know who that is, and i dont actually care either, my argument is the same. Regardless of how great a fisherman he is or was, he would have had a better experience with better gear. Im not arguing that it catches more fish (which is almost certaintly does not), its just a better experience all around. Its better than a string on a stick, ill give you that much, if you say your $200 setup can match it im not gonna argue with you.

Only hooks and line were not handmade, but I'm working on that now. It was janky as hell, but I caught some fish with it. Some people want to do things just to see if they can, you know? I don't want to argue either. A fellow fisherman is always someone I can appreciate, aside from dick-y ones.

>>2364943I haven't used it, but I really like how the Helios 3D casts and if its similar it would be a good choice. TFO has a similar warranty service, they shipped next day after I put in a claim.
