Forgot the bug repellant edition

Feel free to post tobaccos (no weed allowed), pipes, collections, pics of favorite combos for going /out/, pics of what you're doing with your pipe and any questions you might have.

Want to get into smoking pipes without spending too much cash?
Get a Missouri Meerschaum Legend corncob pipe and a pouch of either Captain Black or Half and Half tobacco, available at most drugstores.
What you'll need: pipe, tobacco, lighter or matches, pipe cleaners, and either a regular old nail or a pipe tool (combination tamper, scoop, and small pick).
All of these together should run you less than $25.

Having trouble keeping your pipe lit? Fill it with less tobacco and smoke it slower than you think you need to, lightly tamping as needed when the smoke starts thinning out.
If you're still having trouble, try filling your pipe this way:

I know it takes a lot of courage and guts, but I promise its amazing when you swallow it. Like yeah it's tempting to get a lick and taste it, but when you get a whole mouthful and you gotta just man tf u, savor it, and swallow. If diet is bad, flavor will be bad. Stick to tons of fruits and it's mind blowing

Tasted flavor notes in a cigar for the first time today, instead of just tobacco/wet grass taste. Literally tasted like earthy peanuts, it was uncanny.

Have two corncobs with Peterson Nightcap and C&D Autumn Evening in the mail to see how pipe tobacco is.
>>
>>2345886
You're going for some pretty heavy tobaccos, Nightcap is a beast in the English/Latakia department and Autumn Evening is flavoured 6 different ways.
>>
>>2345893
Will see how it goes. Most of the stuff my local stores have is mild if I need something less heavy to try.

What would be a good tobacco that exemplifies the flavor of louisiana perique?
>>
>>2345897
Perique on it's own is way too spicy to be smoked straight, it is commonly prepared as Viginia-Perique mixtures. Good examples would be Escudo Navy Rolls or C&D Bayou Morning.

Anyone have epxerience with kirsten radiator pipes or other radiator pipes? I heard they completely remove the problem of moisture and the pipe getting to hot. Sounds a little to good to be true, especially since they have been around for about 80 years and i just heard about it this week.

Repostan from the old thread
Ordered a tin of Peterson Deluxe Navy Rolls and a pouch of Mac Baren Virginia No 1 online yesterday. I've already had a pouch of the Mac Baren and loved it, never had a VaPer before though. It's a shame my local tobacco store mostly has aromatics.

>>2344853
I bought a tin of that recently and have smoked it a bunch of times now but I can't seem to get much flavour out of it. Got any tips?

You can use the clay Nording keystones or anything like it in any pipe. You don't need a special pipe. I drop a few in the bottom or all of my pipes to cut a little moisture and it also cuts down on dottle and makes it easier to smoke all of your tobacco to ash. You can also reuse them a few times.
>>
>>2346444
Oh I know, I've used them in my other pipes, I just really like the eriksen pipes because the chamber that holds them is neat and easy to clean.

Here in the US you can usually just buy a bagged ounce (28.3g) of something for $3-4 if you are starting out. As for a pipe, if you are in Italy you could probably get an old Savinelli inexpensively and you'll have a pipe you'll never have to replace.
>>
>>2346956
It's pretty inexpensive. Some websites sell 1oz bags of bulk tobacco for like 3 bucks. Not a great deal, but you can try quite a few different blends for not much.

You should get like 5-8ish bowls with 1 oz I think.
>>
>>2346966
any brand of tobacco you d suggest?
up until this point i have smoke chocolate flavored cigars (the italian toscanellos).
but i also love a mild/smooth flavor.
i ll follow your advice and look up for some salvinelli on fb marketplace or small shops around
>>2346968
is it cheaper to buy them online or they are the same price as the shop ones?
>>
>>2346969
Dunno about a specific brand as I dunno what's available easily in Italy. Cornell and Diehl and Sutliff both have good things to try in that 3-4 per oz range in the US. Peterson is a very good brand as well, but usually you have to buy 2oz tins for $10 or so.
>>
>>2346526
I wish I knew of one. Let us know if you'll find one.
>>
>>2346957
If you're Italian, go to the tobacco shop and don't buy from Amazon. If you want a cheap pipe they should have something like Lorenzo Spitfire from Pavia for €10. Also if you go to the tobacco store you can smell the different tobaccos and maybe buy small test samples if they offer open tobacco.
Savinelli is a good mid range brand from Italy, but then Italy has many excellent brands and makers. Ser Jacopo, Dacordi, Caminetto, Berebbia etc.
For tobacco, there is aromatics (everything that has been sauced and spiced with something like Rum or Chocolate or Vanilla) and naturals. Naturals are divided into "English" which includes fire smoked Latakia tobacco and orientals amongst other things and has a very distinctive taste and there is Virginia blends which contain mostly Virginia and maybe some Perique to spice things up. So best to try one of each to see what you like.

The problem with C&D and also GL Pease is they cost considerably more than EU made tobaccos because of import taxes and all it costs double that what the most expensive Euro tobaccos cost.

Actually that system with separate condensation used to be pretty common in older pipes. I have two NOS BBK's that have that and even more special, they have two drilled smoke channels from the condensation chamber to the bowl. Pic related. They used to be really cheap on Ebay/Ricardo, but I haven't seen them cheap lately.
>>
>>2346969
>is it cheaper to buy them online
Depends. If you have a really good tobacco shop near you, you're in luck. You know a good tobacco shop when they have a bunch of bulk blends in jars in the back for $5 or less an ounce.

Most tobacco shops aren't like that. They're one of two categories--either they're dudebro weed shops with a pitiful selection of hardwood pipes and brand name tobacco (most of this will be Gambler or some such that is really RYO cigarette tobacco--stay away!). The best you can get at these stores is probably Borkum Riff or Captain Black. Or, on the other extreme, they're snobby ass cigar shops that have a decent selection of pipe tobaccos... at exorbitant prices. Either way you'll be paying $10 or so an ounce, and in that case buying online is cheaper if you live in a non cucked location.

What you really want is a tobacco shop oriented towards the working class, everyday pipe smoker which are becoming a rarity.
>>
>>2347289
>tobacco shop oriented towards the working class, everyday pipe smoker which are becoming a rarity.
No real market for it beyond cigarettes and chaw. Working class people just get drunk or smoke weed nowadays.

>>
>>2348722
Where to get airtight jars like that?
>>
>>2348727
You can get them at Walmart or Amazon. But I usually buy them at thrift stores, there are always a ton of them for like $2.

A lot of them (not that big but same style) are actually old scented candle jars but who cares as long as they have been cleaned thoroughly, glass doesn't hold smells and flavors
>>
>>2345649
Only smoked black and milds before, what do you guys recommend for getting into pipe smoking? I knew an old guy who used a pipe, he always had flavored tobacco.
>>
>>2348731
Do they actually seal airtight for proper storage? I usually use mason jars but would like something like that to mix it up and perhaps be more space efficient.
>>
>>2348734
Can't go wrong starting out with Lane 1-Q. Mild, mellow as hell, really sweet and pleasant room note without tasting fake or sticky. Great beginner's tobacco.

If you want to buy in person you can get Captain Black Royal for a similar good beginner's aromatic but it is more expensive and not quite as good.

4noggins.com sells samplers that you can get once you get a little more into the hobby, to help you expand your palate and figure out what your tastes are.
>>
>>2348739
Yeah, they seal pretty airtight, I use them to store other herbs. Mason jars are probably a little better but I doubt it makes much difference.

i went to all the tobacco shops nearby, i only found some salvinelli starting at 85 euros.
i wanted to start with something cheap, just in case i don t like it.
so i checked some of the replies in the previous thread and looked on amazon as well, i found these candidates:

otherwise i was considering getting one of these 2 so i can get the tools to clean them as well.
most reviews are satisfied but a few complain about some defects.

Cobs have either no filters at all or some weird rolled cardboard filters that nobody uses. It does a nice job at keeping condensation down and not fucking with draw or taste.

Not sure, those shapes are largely indigenous forms at home in Switzerland. The Swiss would call that Älplerpfeife or Sennenpfeife (meaning mountain men pipe) but would use a geographic name for the specific type common in that region. This specific one would be a 77 Vaudoise after the canton of Vaud.

Most countries with mass immigration, so, most of Europe. Enough about that tho, can't we just talk comfy pipes?
>>
>>2350427
Sometimes the wood isn’t remarkable, and while briar is fireproof, it isn’t the best wood to use if you really like figuring, because there are SO many flaws in the wood. Pipe buyers demand flawless finishes with no sand pits or putty fills, which means only about 1% of briar blocks can make really good smooth finish pipes. Most of the rest get rusticated finishes because those pipes can’t command more money anyway, so doing anything more is useless.
>>
>>2351114
I'm from Europe, never heard about anybody Nazi larp ever. That's why I'm curious .Like who would go Nazi larping, and why?

>>2351121
I get the plan ws rough, but why not just sandblast it in that case? Even non spectacular wood looks nice and organic and they can use putty on the pits just the same.
>>
>>2349069
brought it to pretty much the biggest pipe shop in Denmark, and the cost the repair would be double the price of the pipe, and im not spending over 200usd for a repair job, i could even find a guy who could do it, old vulcanized ebonite can be sketchy man
>>
>>2351127
I take back what i said about nazi larping and immigration, i dont know fuck about shit.
>>
>>2351127
Because sandblasting it isn’t that cheap. Especially if you want it done well.
Just wanting a bit of texture is one thing, but the really deep blasts involve multiple rounds of blasting, and in between wiping it down with olive oil, heat curing the oil, and letting it dry before blasting again. It’s not cheap at all.

Alright, Im gonna post my thoughts here.
I've tried cigarettes many times, most of them partying. Two years ago I ejoyed ciggys, but now I really cant stand them, specially if they're not snuff rolling (yeah, its popular to smoke snuff rolling in Spain idk about the US), wich I find much more ejoyable and even then, I dont like them very much. The thing is, sometimes I'd love to enjoy a nice pipe or something when Im out, cause I think i'll be in heaven if I manage to enjoy it.
>Do you think I should try smoking a pipe or will it be a waste of time and money?
>wich tobacco would you recomend me smoking?
>Is there some snuff rolling tobacco that some non smoker could easly enjoy?
>>
>>2352073
I would at least give it a try if you’re interested. Just buy a cheap cob pipe and a couple ounces of a bulk tobacco blend. If you don’t mind the flavor of rolling tobacco, I would think you’d enjoy pipe tobacco. I’d start with a burley or straight Virginia blend just to see how you’d like a base pipe blend. After you get used to those, I’d move to either aromatics or English blends. I’d personally recommend English blends, as they’re super full of flavor, but if you feel like you want less of a tobacco taste and just want something to puff on while you’re out, aromatic blends might be the choice for you.

Got my tax returns and I’m about to buy a few new pipes, but I have some questions. Does anybody have experience with Rossi pipes? Is the smoking quality any less than that of Savinelli? I’m not worried about cosmetics, or which was has the better grain, or which is more symmetrical, etc. I’m just looking to see if it smokes well, has good drilling, and dissipates heat well. I’m looking for a 320 l, and a Rossi 8320 is about $40 cheaper than a Savinelli 320. From what I’ve seen on YouTube, people seem pretty happy with their Rossi pipes, even if they aren’t nearly as elegant as a mid-high end Sav. Just wanted to make sure before I buy one.

Lakelands are fucking delicious. I remember the first time I ordered Ennerdale Flake I was kinda nervous because I read that it was a love it or hate it blend. The people who hate it say it smells like a dead old lady in a funeral home after they put the perfume on her. The people who love it say it’s pure bliss. When I opened up my bulk bag, I was pleasantly surprised. I didn’t get the overwhelming floral perfume scent like everybody was taking about. I got a beautiful tonka bean, citrus, almond aroma. To be fair, it did have an almost baby powder smell to it, but baby powder just smells like tonka bean anyway. Still not anywhere close to the “flowery perfume” I kept hearing people complaining about. And taste wise, the topping is even less present. There are high quality Virginias in that blend that overpower the Lakeland essence. I actually just ordered 200g more of Ennerdale Flake today on Smokingpipes as it’s the one Gawith blend that seems to remain in stock. Stonehenge Flake is also another good one that’s easily available. But anyway, as long as you dedicate a pipe to Lakeland blends, it doesn’t matter how much it ghosts it.

Oh yeah I love Lakelands, just annoying I can't order them whenever I please. I'd been on the mailing list for smokingpipes and a few months back they restocked and I could have grabbed everything I wanted but I was a bit tight on money and didn't pull the trigger. Really regret it now lol. I've still got a good amount of a few of them, but I've run out of the old lady perfume stuff. Need some more Grasmere or Broken Flake no. 7. Been meaning to try Ennerdale too, but it looked like they were sold out... Just checked though, I've gotten used to only doing bulk, didn't notice they have tins. Usually I just order the 250/500 gram boxes of stuff. Right now I'm just sitting on a pile of brown flake scented and dark flake scented. Not really too keen on the dark flake scented, something about it just doesn't agree with me.
Also kind of wondering now if I need to dedicated a pipe to different types of Lakelands. Got two dedicated pipes, plus a couple of clays I use for whatever. But my dedicated briar I've only used for the fruitier stuff, and then I've got an old meer that I've used primarily for the hardcore floral stuff. Probably best to keep the two distinct.

It's about as rustic as it gets... I kind of like leaving the bark on there, I think I might laquer it or something to preserve the bark.

More likely I will make another pipe like it but better, this one is just like a prototype. I'll find a whiter birch tree with a nicer pattern and cut it so it actually sits on its own, then laquer that one

Will post my next attempt when I get around to making it. I won't make a tamper, I have an irrational hatred of pipe tampers because just use a fucking nail you pretentious twats.

>cut a pipe out of a birch tree
>does the spruce add a nice flavor
Cityfag detected. Birch != spruce. Spruce is a softwood and making a pipe out of softwood would be retarded, it would seep out pine pitch and taste disgusting. Same reason you don't normally burn it in a fireplace.

But to answer your question, no, it didn't add a nice flavor. It actually added kind of an unpleasant tang on the first smoke but has been pretty neutral since then. This may be because I used a green birch branch, if I had let it season for a year before trying to make a pipe out of it I would probably have had better results, but as I said this was a quick and dirty project.

There's a wide variety in flavors so recommending one to beginner who doesn't know what he likes is a bit hard.
Do you like certain kinds of whiskey or beer? We could go from there.
>>
>>2357733
i often drink beer, dark beer is nice, i prefer it compared to the light one, i usually drink the double malt peroni https://duckduckgo.com/?q=peroni+gran+riserva+scura&t=ffab&atb=v320-3&iax=images&ia=images&iai=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.planethoreca.it%2Fshop%2F8663-thickbox_default%2Fbirra-peroni-gran-riserva-doppio-malto-50cl-vap-12pz-x-ct.jpg
>>
>>2357733
Not that guy but what would you recommend me? I like bourbon and rye whiskey, Knob Creek is my go to, and I like Bock beer the best. Deep, earthy, woody flavors are great, a little sweetness is okay, but I hate things like the flowery bitterness of excessive hops or the perfuminess of some Scotch.

>>
>>2357865
If you like dark, malty beers that are more sweet than hoppy I'd suggest a straight Virginia or something Virginia heavy. A good Virginia and Burley blend would work too.
The second tobacco I smoked was Mac Baren Mixture (AKA Scottish, don't be fooled though, it's not a Scottish blend at all) and that could be right up your alley. It's a fairly sweet tobacco with a variety of flavors and the Mac Baren tobaccos seem fairly cheap on that list you provided.
It has sweet hay, grass and fruits from the Virginia, earth, wood and nuts from the Burley and Kentucky and some sweet spice from the Cavendish.
Can burn hot though so smoke slowly.

>>2357910
If you like earthy and woody flavors Burley based blends could be your thing. Burley tends to carry those flavors. Maybe a flake cut tobacco too, those tend to taste a bit stronger and deeper.
Oriental could be your thing too, they have a more dry taste and carry a spicy taste. I can also be like dry flowery bitterness of excessive hops though.
For you too I can recommend Mac Baren Mixture Scottish Blend, it has a multitude of flavors going on and which one takes the foreground varies a bit from bowl to bowl.
Heavily topped tobaccos I'd recommend staying away from.
Try something heavy on Virginia as well, they're fairly sweet but not candy like as Cavendish can be.

In my experience boomers at tobacco stores often recommended you weak aromatics which smell good initially (but will still make your house and everything in it reek of tobacco smoke if smoked inside) but don't taste like anything. Mac Baren Mixture is technically also an aromatic but actually has some taste. Might as well light a scented candle if you just want aroma.
Having said that I'd also recommended you to try out the different blends and kinds of tobacco out there. Smoking a strong English or VaPer for the first time is quite an experience.
I like reading up on tobaccos on this website on tobaccoreviews.com, good website.

I weep for your town, that the cart is leading the horse. Because you apparently need explanation- the horse is supposed to lead the cart, as they pull it- they do not PUSH the cart, nor does the cart move on its own, dragging the horse with it. This means those who are expected to lead, the adults, are instead being led by the children- because they have a better understanding of the world or atleast language

I realize now I’ve been packing way too tight. I’ve only been into pipes since January. I always figured that if the draw was good, the pack was fine. I didn’t take into account oxygen or problems with tamping. So while my draw was always fine, I was packing too densely for the tobacco to get any oxygen or for it to be tamped correctly. My tobacco was constantly going out, and while the first quarter of the bowl was excellent, the rest of the bowl became increasingly muddled and harsh. So the past couple days I’ve been experimenting. I got rid of the gentle-firmer-firmest three pack method and just went gentle-gentle-gentle. Now my bowls smoke to the bottom with a consistent flavor and burn.
>>
Anons who don’t like latakia, can you enlighten me as to why? Not judging, just genuinely curious. The first time I had it I fell in love. I’ve always loved the smell of campfires and fireplaces in the wintertime

It's just insanely over powering and often very one dimensional. I liked it at first, but now no matter the blend if it's got any more than the slightest pinch of latakia it all just tastes the same.

Is it tins or the big boxes? Ain't nobody got time for little tins. Also they're usually more expensive than other vendors in my experience.

People are just impatient I guess, Gawith gets restocked over like a 6 month or one year interval, can't remember. So for the 5 months its out of stock, people freak out.
>>
>>2358565
Clean the cake out, then fill the bowl with non iodized salt, and put a few drops of high proof unflavored alcohol in there. I use everclear. It'll suck a lot of gunk out of the wood. Once the salt turns black, dump it and repeat until it stops getting dark.
As for the stem, if its vulcanite, clean it up with micromesh or failing that a mild abrasive like toothpaste, buff it with some wool or whatever and rub it down with mineral oil.
>>
Just bought a new Rossi 8802 from my local B&M. I’m almost certain I’m gonna dedicate it to lakelands. Breaking it in with some PS luxury navy flake right now.
>>
>>2358565
Every so often (couple months or so give or take) I’ll dip a pipe cleaner in some high proof whiskey or vodka and just run it through as I normally would. I try to stick with stuff that has the least flavor just to make sure none of it spills over to the tobacco. Granted I only smoke 3-4 times a week at the most and always run cleaners through every time so its not like I have a constantly lit chimney.
>>2358886
Looks pretty nice anon, how much did it run you? My main pipe is a Brigham briar and it was around $40.
>>
>>2358954
>how much did it run you?
$75. Could’ve got it for $66 online, but I would’ve had to pay for shipping anyway. Smokes like a charm. The drilling in the shank is slightly off center, but it doesn’t affect the performance in any way.
>>
>>2358804
It might as well be with how hard it is to get in the US. Like the other anon said, it only shows up once or twice a year, and when it does it goes extremely quick. Not nearly as quick as Esoterica blends which sell out in less than 24 hours, but they usually sell out within a few days max.

All I know is back when I started smoking pipes, it was a running gag to tell people to look up pipe smoking on YouTube because of the prevalence of pipe bears in the search results.

There were also dedicated forums across a number of web sites, some of which people would gripe about visiting before realizing what sort of web space they'd found on their quest for chatting about pipes but not about bears.

Do you guys notice loss of flavor when your tobacco dries out too much? My tin of OGS lost all the great flavors it had, now it just tastes like regular smoke. It still smells like dried fruit when I open the tin, but I no longer get the sweet grassy-hay like flavors that I enjoyed. Ive tried smoking it slow and cool, fast and hot, multiple pipes, and no luck. Im afraid I wasted a tin by not immediately jarring it after opening, the tin has been open for about 5months
>>
>>2361148
Yeah you can replace moisture but not flavors that evaporated off.

Anybody ever have problems with Tobaccopipes? I placed an order for two tins on Wednesday around noon. My order still says “awaiting fulfillment”, meaning it hasn’t even shipped yet and they’re still waiting to pack it. Is that normal for Tobaccopipes?
>>
>>2361148
Just rehydrate the tin. I use those little metal discs with clay inside to rehydrate. They're usually referred to as pouch moisteners. Soak them for a few minutes in distilled water and then add them to the tin/jar for a few days. Halfway through I mix up the tobacco so it rehydrates evenly. Brings back the flavor for me.
>>
Trying this for the first time. I’ve been trying to get into straight Virginia blends, and I was intrigued by the high reviews for this. Just based on my first bowl, this may be the all day blend I was looking for. It’s sweet, bready, with a tangy grass and fruit after taste with just a bit of spice.

It’s only a few anons. Most of us smoke pipes to get away from politics and other mundane bullshit. We cover cigars as well.
>>
>>2363252
If you've seen any other boards this past couple years you'll know /out/pipe is an apolitical paradise by comparison. You want to be away from it completely, might as well get off 4chan, unfortunately.

Just post some fucking cigars. What have you smoked recently? I enjoy a cigar though I usually just smoke Factory Throwouts. I have actually been finding that I like a cigar better outside right now as it is black fly season in my area, and the higher volume of smoke from a cigar wards them off better than a pipe does
>>

Putting aside the obvious;
>DUDE WEED LMAO
My understanding is that most edible herbs can indeed be smoked, ie; sage, mint, clover, etc. So good luck experimenting and not dying, I guess. Maybe make a journal and share you discoveries.
>>
>>2362972
Mugwort if you want the really earthy and gnarly side of tobacco without the softer or sweeter flavors. My personal favorite herbal smoke is damiana and scullcap though I prefer it in a cigarette instead of a pipe. Unfortunately none of them really have the flavor complexity that tobacco does.

I heard that the three pack method really is the best method, BUT it’s also the hardest to get right. I remember reading somewhere, it could’ve been on one of these threads, that it’s better to pack gently and get less smoking time than to attempt the three pack method and ruin your bowl. That’s why I decided to try the gentle-gentle-gentle instead. Glad it’s working for you too.

we´ve had sweeping new legislation on tobacco sales here, now all tobacco products have to be behind a screen so you cant even see them, to proteck MUH CHIILDREEREEN from starting smoking, which is pretty retarded becaause what makes smoking cooler? thats right, it being scarcer.
i started pipe smoking casually when i was 20, an informed choice, been doing it for 7 years, my doctor wont even write smoker on my patient log. but OH NO TOBACCO BAD! (government still want the taxes on it thought hehe winkie face)
>>
This may not be the best straight Virginia out there (that's a given really) but this is my favorite all day baccy.
Pack it loosely and sip gently and it will give you a nice, cool, sweet bright Virginia taste, maybe even some licorice at the end. No complex flavors to ponder over, but a solid pleasant taste.
Packs little to no nicotine so can be smoked whenever.
Nice natural smell.
Can burn for 45 minutes even when packed loosely.
And, most importantly (for me) readily and steadily available at my local tobacco shop.
