>>2205319>inb4 butthurt poorfagsThe most expensive new KLR is like $8k. That's not a huge amount of money, even for a motorcycle, and that's brand new. You can get a running used KLR from the 80s or 90s for a couple grand. If he had posted a 1200 GS or the new Panamerica, he might rustle a few jimmies, but the KLR has always been and remains the working man's offroad motorcycle.

I'd prefer a DRZ400 or DR650
>>2206309>>2206325Seething, using old bikes leaves a smaller carbon footprint and is better for the environment than new bikes. Im doing my part.

>>2206954>>2207039>>2207067I haven't mentioned electric once you absolute niggers. It's not true that older bikes leave less of a carbon footprint. >>2205854kek>>2205291yeah, the klr is the ultimate /out/ bike, a little tall, the old 400s might be a better option
>>2208078But who makes the engine?>>2208097DR650>KLR650
AJP PR7 is the best off the peg adventure bike you can buy at the moment, if you want to do serious offroad and long distances. Also, the Tenere 700 is a great effort by yamaha, but a little heavy.Eitherway it's great that manufacturers are beginning to making actual real offroad focused adventure bikes rather than dressed up pigfat commuters.as for bikes again, as it's always been, the best option is to modify a lightweight trail bike into an adventure bike. The CRF400 is looking to be an excellent candidate for this once more after market parts are available such as fuel tanks. In the past it was bikes such as the BMW x-challenge and KTM 690r. Bikes which have gone overland over the most challenging routes (BAM road etc)The problem with bikes like the KLR and DR650 is their weight. They are way too heavy for serious offroad once they are loaded with luggage.
>>2207514>Honda XR650The XR650L overheats like a motherfucker. It used to be pretty popular to have a shop weld bigger cooling fins on the cylinder head but I don't know if anyone even does that anymore. Sometimes guys would rig up an oil cooler on them too. I've also seen 2 used ones with the fucking sprocket welded onto the countershaft because the factory one destroys the splines in short order. It's just a piss poor design all around. Fuck Honda for killing the XR600R and keeping that piece of shit around for 20 more years.
Imagine a CR500

I have pic related and I live in Vegas. I want to take it out on dirt and blm land, but I nearly broke my calf (wrong boots) and fucked up the brake lever control switch after dropping it a bunch of times. I repaired it and will take it out again soon to try again. Any advice for the next time I take it out on dirt?
>>2206602>because it is extremely unsafe on American roadsWhy?
>>2205291No this is.Combustion engines don't belong /out/.
Y'all living in the past decade, everyone know knows anything about /out/ will tell you about the superiority of the Royal Enfield Himalayan. Steeped in decades of reliability, refined on the mountain slopes of its namesake, the Indians have created the perfect vehicle.Stop believing in all that Chinese propaganda and all those German lies, its proven time and time again that they lie and cheat on all sorts of road standards, can you really trust them with anything any more?
>>2210976Good luck actually getting anywhere in that. You'll spend 2 days just riding on the highway to get away from anyone.

>>2206459Sure you didn't reply to the wrong post? My XT is even older than your XL. Still will drive circles around you.
>>2207089Are you retarded, or just a shill?Bikes cause 90-95% of their carbon footprint during manufacture. Old bikes were already manufactured, new ones weren't.The footprint from continuing to use and maintain an old bike is, and will always be, lower than replacing it.
>>2210988>Royal Enfield Himalayankek. Had one of those parked next to my XT 240 recently. a whole metre longer, 10cm less ground clearance, smaller front wheel, wider tires, and probably 80kg more. In other words, a piece of shit for people who never leave the trail.
>>2210988heavy, slow, bad suspension, poor ground clearance, cant go over 70mph, literally parts falling off in the promo
>>2210765More than once I've had to accelerate away from a car trying to mush me into the side wall one the freeway
>>2206325It's more expensive to maintain those old bikes then your new shot costs
>>2211035Most advs are just larp cruisers for people that don't want a goldwing and want to go down a gravel road once in awhile they are to heavy ,expense to maintain and unwieldy off road
>>2210712Sooner or later everyone embraces /tractor/.
>>2210764>Any advice for the next time I take it out on dirt?Get some levers with the pivots. Sucks trying to get around anywhere technical without a clutch. There’s any number of brands out there. Zeta ones are pretty cheap and do the job. Also only do up the brackets tight enough that they won’t move with use, but if you give it a good thump with the palm of your hand, it can rotate on the bar if you crash. Also if you’re riding somewhere really hot, this shit in your coolant will help keep the temperature quite a bit lower. Also some synthetic oils don’t transfer heat as well as mineral oils.
>>2209752>KTMs are nice but they're tuned to the fucking moon and the maintenance schedule is retardedI have a YZ250F that fits this description!Fast as fuck, and 3hr oil and filter ha ha I do oil every day or 2, filter every 2nd oil change. Fuck it, I’m no Travis Pastrana, pretty sure it’ll handle it.
>>2211032Did you? I was responding to a moped poster. My bike is slow as shit, i just use it for trail riding and going to work. Im, going to see if i could make it from northern michigan to Wyoming on it soon. >>2211152cruise 60 on the backroads and carry extra fuel and it's doable.t. made the trip from arkasas to idaho and back a few times on a honda 250
>>2211162Thats the plan, im welding up a mount for my extra gas tanks this weekend at my friend's house. He thinks im retarded and that i need at least a 650 but i think is doable. You won't like this, but the surron is the greatest outdoor bike there is.It only weighs 100lbs, has the range of 40 miles, it's electric (quiet), only 2kwh battery (less than 25 cents to charge), it's capable of climbing anything, it's light enough to lift it over debris, it only costs 4k stock. Realistically you could camp with a 10lb 100w portable solar panel charger and get enough juice to dirtbike 10 miles in a day while keeping the other 50% of the battery charged to service electronics and emergency situations.
>>2212925>dry weightI don't know the exact numbers for that bike, but going by similar ones, you can probably add ~2kg oil, ~15 kg fuel, and ~10 kg for the cargorack (what that other anon called a "subframe"). That'd put you somewherein the 150-155kg range. Also, modern bikes will always be heavier than older ones with similar specs, simply because of the stricter regulations for noise and emissions. Bigger exhausts and catalysators have weight too, and running the engines at minimum emissions mean they're even further from optimum power than they were a decade ago.
