Does anyone else get irrationally angry at the phonies that inhabit this place? Any time I’ve been inside I just see fat senior citizens buying overpriced shit for imaginary outdoor activities they will never actually take part in. They will buy their lightweight titanium cookware, freeze dried meals and hiking sandals to a campground with a power hookup and drive into town to eat at restaurants and pretend to be outdoorsman. I have never once seen anyone in there that actually looks like they would know how to start a fire without a lighter. If I handed them a ferro rod they wouldn’t know what the fuck they were looking at.
>>
Not really however I am sick of being asked by every member of the store if I need help
>>
>>2163853
Just wear a “CAPITALISM IS GREAT” t-shirt and they won’t come anywhere near you.
>>
>>2163850
How does one use a ferro rod?

Asking for a friend...
>>
>Only phonies shop at REI
>I know that because I've only ever seen phonies there when I'm shopping at REI

OP, I...
>>
>>2163865
I’ve had to stop in three times. Once when they were the only store in town that had the pair of boots I needed. Second time when they had a huge rebate on gopros and the third time was to get a present for my mother who wanted a guide map of the U.S. she wanted to take on a road trip.
>>
>>2163872

It was just a bit of light ribbing, my man. Can I suggest chilling out? Outdoor stores are not reserved for hardcore enthusiasts.
>>
>>2163876
I get that but REI seems to cater exclusively to LARPing yuppies who would drive to the laundromat to wash their clothes mid trip because they smelled smokey after a camp fire.
>>
>>2163850
>Does anyone else get irrationally angry at the phonies that inhabit this place?
Yeah the staff. Inexperienced people that don’t know any more than what’s written in the catalog.
Like recently I asked over the phone if L and R zip sleeping bags, one mummy, one semi rectangular would zip together. No sorry. Oh well jus send another L overnight, I need it this weekend.
Arrives. CLEARLY designed the semi rectangular with 2 zips to match mummy.
FUCK GODDAMMIT TO LATE TO GO SWAP IT. So I’m about $400 of pissed off. Not REI but our equivalent, it’s all same shit at the end of the day.

>>2163850
clearly you are the phony because you don’t know that this is how rei works to be able to serve actual serious outdoors and extreme sports people. they sell all the fashion and useless gear so that they can afford to sell all the serious gear that has very little profit margin.
>>
>>2163850
I don't get why the clothes are so expensive for being made in SEA. Some of my grandpas cold weather gear he was issued in Korea works and holds up significantly better than the clown suits REI has in stock.
>>
>>2163947
>Some of my grandpas cold weather gear he was issued in Korea works and holds up significantly better than the clown suits REI has in stock.
Sure, until you get wet, or have to do any strenuous activities, like climbing a glacier.
>>
>>2163947
>I don't get why the clothes are so expensive for being made in SEA.
I hear you. Dad bought a jacket shop soiled under half price $350 about
’95. Delaminates about 2000. Decide to be cheeky, took it in and asked for lifetime warranty. No problem, walked out no questions asked. About ’05 seam tape started to peel. Warranty replacement. Still got that but it’s just plain wearing out.
Now the company’s moved to China, 1yr wty. Can’t even repair a zip. Cheaper, but still no change from $500, looks like they’d make it conveniently to about 18 months.
So cost to replace it for a similar duration? About $8500.
Recently new company started, quite expensive $600-900 jacket, $450 trousers but lifetime wty, manufactured here, repair here, super heavy duty.
I’d rather spend that bit extra and get a good run out of it and some product support than throw money at low cost, high markup, no backup crap still maintaining their “local” image.
>>
>>2164048
>Until you get it wet
The stuff has, many times over the last 70years, and still outperforms (in terms of not falling apart) the competition. Sure, if you fall in a river and have to walk a few miles it's not the best option but it still keeps you warm enough.

>Or have to do any strenuous activity.
My dad used the gloves, face mask, shoepacs, and parka regularly during the winter to plow the driveway since he was too much a cheap ass to buy anything new. Now I wear it to larp around up north on trips with friends.

>Like climbing a glacier.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure infantry gear wasn't/isn't designed for the average combat troop to scale a glacier you fucking idiot.

You're seriously gatekeeping REI? Occasionally I see some cringey stuff there, (some 30 year old dude looking for electronic equipment so he could extend his wifi beyond his van and browse reddit from his laptop. I'm not even kidding, the dude held up the line for like 8 minutes asking for help), but even then who cares? Everyone starts somewhere.

Last time I was in there was to try on some trail runners I saw online. I needed a halfway size and they didn't have it but the sale's associate kept fucking pestering me to buy a whole size below the one I needed because "it'll stretch out bro don't worry." Told him I'll just buy the size I need online and he got genuinely upset because "oh well I'm going to miss this sale then." Like nigger that's not my problem fuck off.

Why would I use a ferro rod when I can buy a bic for like 2 bucks
>>
I wouldn't know. You won't catch me dead inside an REI, Cabela's, Bass Pro or Dick's because I do all my shopping online.

You have the mentality of a stuck up cunt who uses your hobbies as a crutch for your utterly unremarkable character. Imagine some chess player getting mad that people like to play monopoly, or a manchild gamer getting mad that not everyone treats video games like a competitive sport. That's what you are. Newsflash, nearly everything you use for your middle class tree fucker lifestyle was actually invented for people who needed them, and thus have uses outside of your hobby.
>>
Why would I hate REI.
>climbing manager usually knows what he's talking about
>always a good source for advice on where to go

>As a result of the now (shitty) manufacturer they're incapable of fixing the smallest problems

>How does one use a ferro rod?

First of all, this...
>>2164613
>You throw it away and buy a Bic lighter.

...but if you absolutely have to...
>break away small chips from the rod with a knife until you have a small bunch
>put that bunch into whatever fuel source is available, needs to be absolutely thin and dry because the chips aren't that effective
>strike the rod to light up all the chips at once

The other style is to just rapid-scratch the stick while holding it against the fuel.

It's a complete meme, harder to use than a lighter and the only thing it's actually used for is internet conversations where some random shithead has to try to get above other people by saying they use the "real and manly" option while "everyone else takes the easy way" and are not "real outdoorsmen". Much like what OP is doing ITT.

I'd go hiking on gym clothes because I didn't know any better and paid the price. warning: I'm a larper
Are there not situations where a ferro rod is better than a lighter because the sparks are hotter than the flame of the lighter?
>>
>>2167236
No, the only reason that a ferro rod could be better is it will last longer. You will never be in a situation where your gonna go through a whole lighter
>>
>>2166859
Should have just came to 4chan. This place doles out amazing outdoors advice for free, we could have set you up with some sweet, proven milsurp for half the price.
>>
>>2167245
Is it more durable? Like a lighter can get crushed with a rock and then you're fucked, but the ferro rod can still be used even if it is pulverized with a rock, but if the lighter fluid gets out that's it. Even a case for the lighter can only protect against so much, right?
>>
>>2167277
In all of life I have never seen or heard of your worst lighter fears happening with a bic and even if they do, just carry two mini ones.
I get it though, ferro rods are a great larp, I have one in my moras handle, I have never used it once while /out/.
>>
>>2167245
ferro rod is nice in alpine environments because bics dont work well when cold but the tinder is still pretty dry (sometimes), but you can also just keep it close to your body
>>
>>2163850

>>

you needed them though. you needed.
>>
>>2167236

>Are there not situations where a ferro rod is better than a lighter because the sparks are hotter than the flame of the lighter?

It's a great backup, is not destroyed by water, doesn't freeze, doesn't melt near fire, can be broken into pieces and still works etc. For all practical purposes - indestructible.

You can easily light whatever petroleum industry-based fuel you have in gas, liquid or solid form, but if you have to light wet wood-based tinder, it's not that good.
>>

I like REI for the same reasons myself, its too bad more people dont see the utility of the store.
Not only that but for many people in the US REI is their only option for outdoor stuff to purchase in person.
I like how /out/ is simultaneously too good to use REI but also too poor to based on all of the complaints on price.
Just goes to prove that poverty is the biggest reason the average posters of 4chan dont like things, its the same on every board just for different things.
>>
>>2167524

Here in Canada we have MEC (which actually is no longer a co-op despite it still pretending it is)
MEC is basically the equivalent of REI.
My favorites are the camp hipster types.
Decked out in Patagonia, lightweight everything, and scrawny as fuck.
I still enjoy going in and checking out stuff, but always end up going to Canadian Tire instead for my camping gear.

My biggest regret is buying this tent. It works great, but for a quarter of the price I could have picked up one of those Amazon or Canadian Tire shitters and used it just fine.

>>

>>2167916

>>2167889

>>
>>2167957
Yea you can do that, basically buy gear, use the gear like gear instead of a faggot, return said gear before 1 year is up, rebuy gear with return money for a whole new years worth of warranty period and repeat.
I like Arc'teryx shoes a lot, they fit me well and feel good, but no joke they are designed to only last a year or two with serious use and likely a lifetime for a cityfag.
So I just do that every year myself for my dead bird shoes, works really well.

>"Pioneers hundreds of years ago never had lighters, we should try to rough it more by using flint rocks or sticks!"
Asshole, if lighters existed back then pioneers would've bought dozens of them and used them nonstop. Stop acting like the outdoor equivalent of a starving artist.
>>
>>2167236
>Are there not situations where a ferro rod is better than a lighter
Yes.
As an emergency last resort method.
As another anon said, they are mostly waterproof (they might oxidize a bit with dampness), they don't freeze, they don't melt (but be careful, they burn).
They are, for all intents, pretty much indestructible.
And easy to put on a lanyard around your neck so you don't lose them.

Also, sometimes a spark will take pretty well when a flame won't.
Same way a normal lighter sometimes works better than a torch lighter.

I literally had five people walk up to me and ask if I need help in a two minute time span. It's like, fuck, just let me browse the fucking freeze dried food in peace, dude.

I like a lot of the gear they have for sale, at the very least it lets me check it out in person instead of looking at photos and descriptions online before ordering, but yeah, the fact most of the employees are patchouli-smelling hipsters and their customers are largely women in yoga pants who think they need high-end gear to ride a bike through the park is annoying.

Although I find it hilarious that if I go in my /out/ clothing, particularly in winter when I resemble pic related, people come up and ask me what I think of various products in there, as if I'm some kind of expert. If I just stop in there after work, I get ignored by everyone but the employees who are asking if i need help every five seconds.

That's a sick hunting outfit. So is camo really just a meme? I know it matters less for big game I guess, but everyone and their mothers says to wear it for small game/birds like turkey.
>>

Camo is a meme if you’re going to shoot an animal from 100 yds away. This is not a sick hunting outfit you will look like the biggest fucking autist if you wear some shit like this

Solid colors, earth tones and greens, work just fine 99% of the time. The purpose of camo is to break up your outline so it's no longer an obvious human shape. So it depends on the environment and what you're hunting.

>>2168731

Wool pants, a wool sweater, canvas parka, and wool alpine ski cap are autistic? That's how the majority of European hunters, particularly in the Alps, have dressed for centuries. And I really could care less what people think of my outfit, so long as it's comfortable and functional.

But every time I go to an outdoor store like REI in my /out/fit, everyone seems to assume I'm an expert. I get random people asking my opinion on various bits of gear they're looking at, or asking about what I'm wearing.

I just really like the look, feel, and functionality of oldschool outdoor gear, especially wool and waxed canvas. Then again, I hunt with a 100 year old German drilling that I load with paper shot shells, chambered in an obsolete/obscure caliber (8x58r Sauer), so maybe I am /out/istic about doing things the old-fashioned way.

Their return policy is killer. Normally I don't abuse shit like this but after dealing with all the faggots in the store last time I am going to. I bought a Garmin Instinct and after using it it for 6 months I am going to walk in, tell them that it doesn't hold a charge anymore, get my store credit, and then buy a nicer model.

This.

I have been saying this in every firestarter thread for years now.

I have been mountaineering where people burn through a BIC lighter in a day just trying to light gas stoves, not even trying to burn dry tinder/etc.

I use firesteel for lighting gas stoves, and storm matches for lighting solid fuels.

I use a BIC at home when lighting my bbq.

/pol/ here, none of us care at all about REI. Have fun obsessing over us on our own website, see you tomorrow.
>>
Hello, I am not american.

I only once went into one of these REI stores. It was in Santa Fe.
I was looking at some random stuff and after the 5th worker came by asking me if I needed help I went into the very front and looked at the displays there hoping no one would bother me anymore.
But then I had the issue of elderly people always approaching me, and telling me about the products that were close to us for no apparent reason. One couple started asking me what I was doing geenrally and then told me which of the foldable chairs I should buy.

It was a very unpleasant experience and I struggled to find these people somehow working together as a kind of childish prank.

I thought the same when I saw it, but didn't post it. Shitty overpriced pants tucked into socks. A hat I own but would not wear in the weather pictured. A pack that is a very basic design but made with materials that 'justify' a huge price tag. This looks like some hipster advert.
>>2168812
I own those gaiters and they suck. They hang low and for whatever reason they have string under the boot to hold it in place so that's a cool thing until it wears out. Actual larp. If it's fashion over utility, it's larping
You can buy surplus that isn't camo, surprise, but costs a fraction of this guy's model outfit,

REI is a co-op scam for yuppies. As malls died they basically replaced Eddie Bauer and the 'mountain' section of department stores. People who shop and wear this shit don't actually go outdoors/camping and if they do they are man bun wearing sit with their legs crossed democrat west coast retards. All the manliest dudes I know including myself who is pretty fucking manly despite the fact that I do own 1 pink shirt and shaved my face this week would never be caught dead in this FAG ZONE of a store. Their shit is literally catered to make people you are an outdoors-ey hiker/park enjoyer but in reality you just want that look despite the fact that you drive a 2010 accord to your shitty fucking 60K$ a year office job and spend all your money on retarded consumerism bullshit with no utilitarian purpose and are probably a vegan or king of reddit or some other gay retarded shit. I wouldn't be caught dead anywhere near here and would drive futher or pay more money to buy from literally anywhere else. You can't tell me the corporate offices for this douche-haven isn't a millenial open office no closed door 'collaborative' office space with retarded shit on the walls that uses agile methodology and has bean bags. Fuck REI, and anyone who shops there. I'm going to the local hardware store, buying my clothes from carhart or letting my wife buy them for me like a real man, and if I need fucking camping or hunting equipment I'll get it from the vast array of other businesses that deserve my fucking money.

This is the gayest fucking thing I have ever seen. The best part is you think you look cool but in reality if someone shot you in the woods the jury would look at what you were wearing, laugh the perp would be acquitted and no one would bat an eye because you look like such a ginormous queef. I don't even care if the jannies ban me for bullying because quite frankly you deserve it.

>Trying too hard/10

This absolutely screams I wore a fedora in high school and banged the 3/10 that slept with 2 of my autistic friends before me. Just dress normally and utilitarian. Its fucking camping not a fashion shoot in 1948. Holy fuck KYS

Wool? Jesse what the fuck are you talking about? Wool has its utilities. Why the fuck are you talking about sheep, son?

Anyway I'm trying to help you by telling you not to dress like a fucking retard. You think you're impressing people. You're not. They're all laughing at you. I'm trying to help you by telling you to stop trying to hard. Maybe I should go the other route and encourage you to dress even faggier and encourage you to post pics here to I can laugh at you. You're such a massive faggot that you're taking my statement about a whiny bitch crying about wool to be an attack on wool, after I stated that I like wool. You're so eager to have someone to attack on an anonymous imageboard that you have to lie and pretend people are saying the opposite of what they're saying. Nobody is impressed by your bullshit. Everybody sees you for the little worm you are. So why keep going? What's your goal here? Just to be contrary for the sake of contrariness?

>>2171965

>Victorian era clothing
>discussion is traditional European Alpine gear still in common use today

Again, why do you have to blatantly lie in order to justify being a piece of shit and pretend you're superior? You're anonymous, you're not getting any pats on the back for every mile of dick you've sucked. Go back to R*ddit and let people enjoy what they want to enjoy. You're a sad, pathetic little worm who doesn't even care what anyone says or likes, so long as you can attack it. Begone, worm. You have no power here.

that's all REI is full of. hypocrites that make excuses why they have to be the things they rage against. excuses why they need a $1,000 coats when a $80 coat at fred meyer does the same thing. while demanding others redistribute their wealth to them for they can buy said $1,000 coat.
>>
>>2178024
and to further add, yes, i live in WA. i'm surrounded by these idiots. every single "anti-capitalist" socialist / leftist i've met have been better capitalist than me when it comes to actions. if they really believed in their virtue signal about being anti-capitalist, anti-materialistic, anti-consumerism, anti-rich, they would be buying that $80 coat on sale for $50 at fred meyers instead of buying that $200 coat at REI that's the same damn quality. but i'm sorry, the fred meyer coat lacks norwegian wool. it just has, gasp, regular wool.

at least i'm not a fucking hypocrite when i go out there and buy a nvidia 3090 to shitpost on 4chan with.
