ever gone shore crab fishing? havnt done it since i was a kid, but now i wanna catch em and eat instead of just looking at them

now theres theese cute little crabbing rods but back in my day we just did pic related, and even thats a little elaborate, just a string with a clothpin, go out harvest a few blue mussels, crush em for bait

I just noticed TackleWarehouse carries a BFS reel now. I guess BFS must really be getting more popular in America
>>
>>2162844
Speaking of BFS, is Kastking Zephyr any good? Is less than half the price of the Shimano and Daiwa BFS reels. Is it bad or just Chinese manufacturing?
>>
>>2162772
Used to handline Blue Crabs in the Chesapeake as a kid, we just tied chicken necks or gizzards right to the mason line, we didn't use clothes pins or anything. Tie the other end of the line to a willow switch and stick that in the gravel of the jetty, when the line goes tight, gently pull him in and dipnet him at the waters surface because they generally drop off when you pull them into the air.

Lots of fun.

Two days in a row- carp were not biting at my regular spot. Caught six bullheads, but got fed up with the lack of carp. Hikeed a ways down to a nearby canal I never fished before, managed to pull out one small common. Better than none! Saw big ones swimming around in there too so I think I’ll give the canal another go sometime soon.

I like the crawler it does take some repetition to get it going but I like the pattern and duller color of the old lures.

to the right of the frog is a 1/4oz jig head with a skirt on it and a weed gaurd.

bottom of the frog are what we call mr.twisters or twister tail grubs you put on a jig head

Got an empty spot by a river with trout (rusthorpe) and a spinner +worm, but I've got a few questions

I use .7 for leaders when I'm fishing in pike waters, but not targeting pike specifically, I try to use .9 to 1mm when chasing eater pike, and my musky rod typically has 1.2 if I'm not using a steel leader.

At least if I'm converting pounds test to diameter right, I think that's what I've got.

Trout and bass are way less likely to bite in the summer heat. You have to switch to finesse presentations, at least for most hours of the day. This summer, I have caught ZERO bass with my go to methods, I've only had luck on things like senkos, bouncing them off the bottom in heavy shade areas with cover. For trout, try a small insect or something, real or fake.

how long can a rod and reel stay under water before its not worth going back for and dragging it off the bottom?
>>
>>2164970
ive heard this before

how do people lose their rod and reel to the water
>>
>>2164970
probably longer than you think. the eyes will probably be corroded if left for some time... but if it has removeable eyelets, it's not a problem. someone who knows what they're doing could even completely replace eyes alltogether... but unless it's a decent quality rod, it's not worth the effort. How do people even lose rods anyways? I'm guessing leaving the line out and the rod in a holder?

Why do you catch carp of all the fish to catch? Carp are crap...
>>
>>2165218
look not him and i also know very little still about carb/fishing in general but here in the netherlands carp fishing is like what bass fishing is in us. except bass fishing techniques/gear can be applied to other predatory fish where carp is pretty specific. I started on artaficial lures catching perch and pike but there is a serious autistic dedication here to carp fishing. like a big portion of tackle stores are actually carp tackle stores where they have little to no non-carp gear.
>>

musky fishing has been killing me lads. No fish, one follow, another chased a smallie in when I wasn't fishing for musky, a few small pike, and constant 10-20km/h winds makes fly fishing harder. Your gear sounds ideal. I use a 10-12 foot 12 or 14 pound leader.
What got me my first carp on the fly was a fly I tied myself called the backwards but. If you see them cruising, or sunning themselves, ignore them. You're looking for a fish that's actively feeding. Theyll usually be kicking up a cloud of mud, and sometimes theyll be tailing. Make a cast 2-3 feet in front of the carp, and 1-2 feet past it. Drag your fly oh so slowly. If you can see the fly, watch for the eat. If you cant see the fly, watch for the carp to swim over and your fly line to hesitate. When you see that hesitation, strip set. The strip set gives better hook penetration and is less likely to spook the fish if he doesnt have the fly in his mouth.

I have had good luck walking very silently and tossing the fly a foot or two ahead of them then dragging it across very slowly. It’s an awesome fight to when you hook them so close to you. The river near me has a dozen carp every 20 feet so it’s not hard

fishing mainly brown trout in lakes and the occasional sea trout in rivers
i was hoping to avoid braid because it's expensive and sold out everywhere, and i want the line to snap before my rod does in case i hook something too big and that i'm not fishing for like atlantic salmon
>>
>>2166334
>I want the line to snap before my rod does
so use like 10lb braid or whatever
>expensive and sold out everywhere
holy shit do you live in Bosnia or something
you only need to buy like 150 yards and use it after you backed up the spool with mono or whatever to bulk it
>>
>>2166360
dont even have to use mono backing on a bg 2500, looks like its got the rubber grip.
>>
>>2166334
That's what a weaker mono or flouro leader is for. Braid is for castability and not having to deal with mono memory to me. Regardless, your rod sounds like the average Medium Light rod, so that usually recommends a max of around 10lb line. If you aren't targeting really big fish I'd not go over 8lb mono because that's where it starts to get thick. 10 will be fine though if you want to. Don't get cheap mono though or you will regret it. Get Trilene XL or something of that quality.
>>
>>2166334
If you're mostly using it as a light rod and targeting small fish, and throwing small lures under about 1/6oz... I'd go with 6lb mono. If you plan on throwing lures closer to the top of that rod range and the fish are gonna be 5+ pounds on average, I'd do 8-10lb mono. the thicker mono is gonna fuck up the action and be stiff for the really small lures. If you can't decide... I'd say meet in the middle and go with 8lb. as long as you use your drag properly and don't have lots of structure in the water, 8lb iv VERY strong. I catch 2-3lb bass regularly on 6lb mono.

It's a good idea to use backing anyway just to make your spool of mainline go further. You're never going to need all 250 yards if you're freshwater fishing. I've twice had 30+lb catfish dig into my 8lb mono backing and landed both of them.
>>
european lure rating specs are so weird. the weight range is so wide. they call something an ultra-light, but then say you can cast 1/2oz lures. that's like throwing a fucking big lead weight. I mean... sure you can do it without breaking the rod, but it's gonna feel overpowering for the rod when you're retrieving it.

SD or SF? Either way halibut are notoriously difficult to get bit. They're actually pretty smart sometimes and follow the bait for a loooong time only to take a small "test" nibble. In my experience dropshots suck for halibut because the line gets in the way of their weird soft sideways nibbles, a halibut would have to be on full steam feed mode to get hooked properly and usually their full hunting modes are only set 30-1hr before sunrise/sunset. "Urban" halibut are the hardest because they face the most pressure, getting a legal size one could unironically take months.

Went to my spot at Port Canaveral, FL by the air force base with dad. Got there right as high tide was coming in. Used live shrimp and frozen sand fleas.

Hooked something decent but I either had the drag set to high or fucked up the knot on the leader line and hook, maybe combination of both. Faught it for a good 30 seconds then line went slack. Felt like a strong fish, probably the big red drum I have been trying to catch. Feels sad.

Still had weight and leader line which wasn't broke, the knot came lose. No action the rest of the day.

Next week frens thanks for reading my blog post.

>>
>>2167089

If they are hand made: the pricing makes sense: lots of plastisol, probably a one or two cavity per mold, and low volume actually sold. If that's being mass produced overseas than that price is ridiculous.

>>
>>2167151
I think the difference is with flies even though it's skilled labor to tie the fly with probably more expensive components, overall you can pump out more flies in less time than plastics. With plastics it doesn't matter how skilled you get there are some things you have to wait for, eg. getting the plastic to correct temp, waiting for stuff to cool, etc.

I remember you Canaveral guy. Sounds like you definitely need to try a better knot or leader. If your using fluoro leader, I've found the a blood knot to tie leader to line, then a fish n fool knot to the hook. work best for me on the fluoro. Set your drag somewhat low, but enough to set the hook, and adjust upwards as needed. Keep trying though because that's the only way it will ever happen. Jealous of you a bit, being stuck to mainly freshwater most of the time.
>>
>>2167082
Tarpon on top water in the off shoots of the river/canals is great in our area this time of year. Tie improved clinches on your fluro and fg to the braid main, or rock the pop'n bobber as it drives big trout and reds wild.

Collecting new species of dinks is just more fun to me than trying all day for a big 'un who is wise and more way more reluctant to bite. I might catch dinks, but I rarely ever get skunked. Why tf do these YouTube zoomer bass fisherman use fucking 5/0+ hooks? Every fish they catch gets it through the eye or out the gill plate. I don't understand the logic. To make matters worse, the dinks they catch get absolutely destroyed even worse. I've caught 3lb bass on #8-#4 hooks ffs. 2/0 is what I consider huge. I never go over that.
>>
>>2167640
Hook size is more determinant on what lure you're using than anything else. A little 1/0 EWG won't rig right on a 5" fluke just like a 4/0 won't fit a Hula Grub or Baby Brush Hog.

Work on your editing man, that way if someone is cussing near by and you pick it up you can simply cut it out or even add wacky sound over it and add some text explaining that someone cursed near by. Right now would be a good time to practice editing since you can't fish, dedicate at least an hour to it a day and you could have a schedule of a video a week or a video every other week. Also youtube "shorts" seem like they are taking off, and you live close to a lot of fishing spots, maybe do a short on your phone every few days about a spot explaining what you would use, what you would target, and if you would come back to that spot to fish.

Going to try to get some catfish tonight from Lake Ontario. Got a lead on a good spot for Bullheads and Channels. For bait I got worms, hot dogs and a flavoured sweet corn that i use for carp, but have caught plenty of bullheads on it. Might be able to get some cutbait with the worms too if they arent going for hotdogs.

Never tried catfish. Apparently catfish is better if you bleed the fish out upon catching it so I guess I will have do that.

How do I catch these fuckers? I saw a few massive ones surfacing at my love lake so I tried to go after them for a few hours. I used corn and worms both on the bottom and with a float with no luck.
>>
>>2167815

They can be tricky, Sunrise and Sunset are when they are most active. Chumming the water with corn can be very effective, when they find a spot with lots of food they like they often do multiple passes. They will feed off the surface but they mostly feed on the bottom so I’d suggest a heavy weight. They also have sensitive mouths and will often will reject your bait if they detect the hook, so generally a small hook size like #2 is best. I sometimes use a #1 or 1/0 circle hook to avoid gut-hooking catfish that live in the same water.

There is all kinds of specialty carp tackle like method feeders, method leads, pack baits, use of hair rigs..

but I’ve caught the vast majority of my Carp with just corn off a T-Swivel, (PicRel) I cover the entire hook shank in corn leaving only a little bit of hook exposed below the barb.

To increase your chances you can make a very cheap ‘pack bait’ at home, it is essentially a mix that can be packed around your weight, cast out and it will slowly break up off your weight in the water, and chums the exact area your hook-bait is in. Lots of different recipes on Youtube, I just use Oats, JellO powder and cream corn to make mine. The right consistency is the main key with packbait.

I know roach are a thing as are perch. Go to a fly shop and buy some #10 or so fly hooks, and hook a couple maggots on as bait with a small bobber and small weight. Fish a piece of structure for a few minutes and move, if you dont catch -something- or at least get a bite I dont know what to tell you. Corn is also an option, as are peas, and bread, but maggots wiggle and stay on the hook well.

Walleye fishing tomorrow on a 1000 acre reservoir max depth 25ft with a thermocline line of around 15ft and not much oxygen in the water below it. Any tips? I heard they like earthworms this time of year I'll probably jig those and cast a soft body minnow. are they going back to deeper water this type of year or should I go where the baitfish are

Hes probably not the UK here we dont need an exam but theres so many different fishing associations that own the rights to fishing on different parts of the rivers that you need to pay for a permit from them but a few miles down the river its a different association and you would need to buy a permit from them.Ive read that Americans only need one permit for their entire state is that true? sounds much more convenient than here.
>>
>>2167998
yeah and you can get a 1-3 day non-resident for like 15 bucks depending on were and how good that state's division of natural resources are. I know PA its more because they do a lot of things with fish hatcheries and maintaining a huge sports fish population

And i forgot to say your not allowed to use spinners where i am.

Big shout out to skid at Blueskall customs for hooking me up with a very reasonably priced 20 1/32oz woolly buggers, and he even through in a bonus jig that looks amazing too. I definitely will be ordering pink stuff for steelhead this fall/winter/spring.

In the USA only small streams and impoundments are private and if they allow public access typically don't require any additional fee. The closest things we have are hunting clubs that sometimes will have private fishing ponds. We have an additional fee of a few bucks if you want to target stocked trout but that's it.

Just placed my order for 2 of my first custom rods, can't wait to get them. Was way less expensive than getting even the highest quality Loomis / St. Croix / Shimano rod, wish I went this route years ago.

I have to get a new rod and real
Some threw the one I had in the lake

River is super flooded, tossed a night crawler on a sand bed submerged maybe half a foot. Few minutes later this guy sent himself up and out of the water like a much sportier fish lol fun catch for a catfish. I was really surprised , I guess shallow fishing them is more fun

I'm the retarded faggot who bought a Daiwa Triple B spinning rod a while back, and I FINALLY got my stupid sandwich clamps on some 4lb braid. Trouble is, I didn't notice that the spool I ordered was like 45 fucking meters. My current reel will hold around 300 meters. Wat do? I've since found ~150m spools online, it's there a knot (I guess technically a bend) I can use to link two of those without fucking everything up? I'm a total fucking noob, so thanks in advance for putting up with my dumb ass. Oh, BTW, how the fuck do I tell if my reel is "braid ready" or if I need to use a backing technique?

Fill most of your spool with Berkley Trilene or some other decent cheap mono, join your backing to your main line with a double uni knot, then fill just over what you can cast with your main line. There's literally no reason to fill a spool all the way down with braid if you're fishing freshwater.

Okay, first off, thank you for your advice, I've saved that image for future reference; but what if I had a reason to do so, whether real or imagined? Same deal, double-uni?
>>
>>2168156
If you spooled 45m of line on your reel and you don't trust yourself to despool and not make a tangle, yeah, you can just use your current 45m string as backing for the new 150m string of braid and use the same knot. You could also use an FG or a surgeons knot, but double uni should be fine.
>>
>>2168171
Okay, thank you bro. Looks like I'm learning a few new knots. (And That's A Good Thing).

I get that, but I research / overthink the absolute shit outta everything I do. I can't help it. For instance, I studied legit thousands and thousands of pages when I taught myself to ride motorcycles, all before I ever mounted up. I read the HURT and MAIDS reports in their excruciating entirety, for Chrissakes.

I’m surprised no one has mentioned multiple tie ups. Take a piece of string and tie 5-6 chicken legs w/ skin (tough for use all day without rebaiting and very cheap) to the string and throw it out to where you see them, let sit, slowly pull it in and net them and throw them right on ice. Easier with a friend because they’ll jump off when you pull them out of the water or try to net them. We’ve limited out blue crabs in a couple hours doing this, I’ve since moved away from the ocean and man I miss it
>>

uh are you not gonna descale that?

Hi guys, I need some advice on my first rod. I am fascinated with ultralight fishing and like to eat trout, so I thought of getting an ultralight rod for my first one. However, my buddy says I should rather get something that can throw more weight, so I can fish with a drop-shot rig as well.
What would you guys recommend for someone starting out?
>>
>>2168351
What would you target if you were drop shotting? You can dropshot with a light rod if you keep the weights small, but if you're trying to fish a tidal current, that won't really work.

Frankly, I think a cheap shit combo is good enough for dropshotting 9 times out of 10, so get the rod you want, and if you end up going dropshotting with your buddy, grab a $25 Walmart Medium to Medium Heavy spinning combo
>>
>>2168373
Mostly Perch or Pikeperch in Reservoirs.
Thanks for the answer
>>
>>2168351
It's up to you. Getting the average "Medium Ligh" spinning rod will allow you to have a much wider range of techniques... but you won't be able to throw the very tiny stuff for microfishing. There is however a rod that I use for an "inbetween" when it comes to bridging the gap between an ultra-light rod and a medium light rod. It's this(specifically the one piece split grip version 5ft6-7ft).
and dick's has the 7ft in stock if you want longer casting distnce
> https://www.dickssportinggoods.com/p/lews-wally-marshall-pro-rod-series-spinning-rod-15lewuprsrsrd7mlxrod/15lewuprsrsrd7mlxrod
As you can see it's listed as a medium light, but it's really a light power rod. I throw everything from tiny weightless flies up to 1/16oz lures. For the price, you won't regret it. The action on it is just money for throwing light stuff. I use 6lb mono and have accidentally caught several largemouth on it despite not targeting them.
>>
>>2168378
If you don't expect heavy current, a rod that can toss a 3/8ths sinker plus a nightcrawler on a hook is probably good enough. IMO, get a decent UL combo because that's what you want, and a cheaper combo in Medium for playing with techniques like drop shitting, etc.

ultra-light fishing is way more fun. drop-shotting and bass finesse fishing gets ridiculously boring because it's so repetitive and one-dimensional. also, bass are overfished to death so you will got lots of skunked days or dinks only. ultra-light fishing opens you up to so many species that are way more likely to bite regardless of weather/time.

>>2168073
That's a barbless tungsten jig option I was telling you about. I think that one's a size 10. I didnt have Chenille or olive hackle small enough so it's a brown hackle with olive ice dub. Make sure you post pics when you catch some fish on 'em.

Ultralight gear is very fun, and when I'm traveling I always bring it. There's something to be said for always being able to catch something out of any puddle you care to target.

I think a rod in the 3/16-5/8 lure rating and around 7' is a good sweet spot for general use
