Nice river smallmouth i caught on a 3/8th oz dark sleeper. First cast, even had a buddy follow him in.
>>2130873Are there any recommended books that describe habitat and techniques for common game fish? Like where to look for them, what type of lures to use, etc.?My neighbor took me trout fishing in his little aluminum boat, was the first time I'd been fishing since I was like 12 years old. I had a great time and want to take up fishing again.
>>2131179Honestly dude, just type that into youtube and you'll learn more than any book.
I'm hitting up the Mississippi river again tomorrow in a desperate attempt to catch some trophy cats. I've been shore fishing and haven't caught a single catfish yet, let alone a trophy cat.>tried a santee cooper rig with 2 oz sinker, current didn't seem that strong but it was too much to keep it anchored>decided to get some big heavy weights and anchor that shit down, and got a 10 oz sinker. It anchored it down, but made it nearly impossible to castIs the river just not the place for me bros? Should I just try to hit up a lake that has catfish?

How are canoes or rowboats for the poorfag lake fisherman? I've been out on actual boats plenty of times, but can't always rely on my richfag friends to take me out obviously when I want to go fishing.
>>2131235If you are mostly going solo, fishing kayak is a good option. Modern sit-on-top ones are really nice, even a dirt cheap one like a Tamarack. I take mine out lake trout fishing and it does pretty well. It's super stable, I have had it out in 25 mph wind (drifting back to the launch, not really possible to fish otherwise in that wind) and have never tipped or had any close calls. You cannot really comfortably fish in more than 10 mph wind, though, unless you are trolling or drifting. Only 50lb, too, so easy to transport. The main downside is that it's not particularly fast, I can effortlessly maintain 2.3 MPH and max out at maybe 3.5 MPH with no wind. I do not have much canoe experience, but generally I find they aren't worth it with just one person unless you need the cargo space plus the ability to portage easier. If you have the money, a large pedal kayak like a Hobie is an absolutely amazing little boat that can even handle ocean fishing without much trouble.
>>2131253>>2131235Forgot to mention, Tamarack kayaks are dirt cheap for a reason. They have not great quality control (one of the handles was installed twisted up so it half ripped off, and the bungee attachments are iffy) and the stock seat is kind of mediocre. A couple hundred bucks would probably get you a much better one. Tamaracks do make a really cost effective way to get on the water, though.
>>2131257>>2131253I forgot all about pedal kayaks. My experience with kayaks in general is pretty little though admittedly and I figured they would just be too small. I'll look into them thanks for the information anon. And why specifically do you think canoes aren't worth it? I'm not unfit so I wouldn't have a problem rowing their size. And their space would be pretty nice considering I like to bring my wife every so often. And what about aftermarket anchors for the drifting problem? Or would it just spin me in circles.

>>2131295I have both pedal and paddle kayaks and have fished off both of them. If you can afford a pedal kayak then I would get one. It's so much easier to fish off of, it's no comparison.

How bad is it to use a spinning rod with a baitcasting reel? I've got a telescopic spinning rod I can throw in my backpack but I can't really afford a telescopic casting rod right now.
>>2131393brook trouts are so pretty. those pink and blue circles are killer

I've never used a dough bait before, how exactly does setting the hook work with it? Is it soft enough that the fish can just pull some bait off the hook, exposing the treble hook and letting you set the hook? Dough bait looks kind of hard in youtube videos.
i kinda feel bad for the bluegill at my local city lake. i just keep catching them with fake plastic bait and they don't get anything out of it.i've been thinking about buying some FEED for them and just giving them a little actual nutrition as a thanks. is this a potentially bad idea? would i be ruining the lake management/ecology?

Is it just me, or does Japanese fishing gear tend to be better? I promise I'm not a weaboo, I even celebrate VJ day every year.
>>2132284It absolutely is better. In general, Japs don't mind spending more for quality over quantity. But specifically, their inshore waters are heavily pressured so their techniques have to be that much more refined. That's why you see a lot of fancy finesse gear coming out of Japan. Here in murrica a spiderman spincaster combo, giant red-white bobber, rusty eagle claw hooks, and some fucking worms you dug out are good enough for your local untouched pristine stream or lake.
>>2132292W-what’s wrong with Eagle Claw? They’ve been my go to hooks for years.
>>2132294Not him, but I find they break a lot when removing the hook and don't stay sharp as long as other hooks

>>2132733What do chinks have to do with Japanese? Is you stupid?
>>2132754chinks and japs collectively have hoovered up all marine life in the western Pacific
>>2132686Not that anon but I've read that powerbait and other dough baits only really work on stocked fish, since they're fed pellets at the hatchery.Natives might nibble out of curiosity but other baits work better.Just what I've read, don't know how true that is.
>>2132736You might need to stretch your budget a little bit to $100, get something better than absolute bargain-basement gear. My suggestion is the Ugly Stik GX2 combo in whatever length/weight you want, they're usually $50. The rod is basically unbreakable and if the reels fall apart after a year or two, spend $30 on a replacement Shimano.I just picked up pic related (Shakespeare Wild Series Panfish combo) for $50 out the door as a loaner rod, haven't had it out yet but liked the build and feel in the store.
>>2132834https://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/shakespeare%C2%AE-ugly-stik-gx2-66-mh-freshwater-saltwater-spinning-rod-and-reel-combo?sku=6-6-medium-medium-4-3-1-25Like this?It was one of the ones I was looking at, probably gonna get the 6.6 rather than the 7 ft one
>>2132679Make areas for worms to go, then you will always find them. buy some bricks, lay them in some soft dirt for a couple of weeks, you will eventually have worms.

>>2132848if you're gonna get an ugly stik gx2 or elite, spend a little more and buy the sienna fg or penn pursuit 3 reel instead of the combo.
>>2132867Pretty much just the first 3 because they're in my budget range>>2132869I might upgrade the reel later depending on its performance>>2132870the sienna might be something I bump my budget up for, I'll be getting a feel of them when I go feel them in person later this week, need to pick up some new bait as well, but I don't wanna go too high as I have to budget for some other things
>>2132736>>2132870This is good advice if you're trying to get the best quality/dollar. Ugly Stik Elite series with a decent reel should be about $80-90 and is nicer than a GX2 combo.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-KNlxIO70oIf anon just wants to get out with his dad for as little money as possible I think a combo is fine.
>>2132879they are solid reels for the price. not much competition at that pricepoint. the penn pursuit 3 has better drag for a little bit more. I personally have a sienna fg and have used it for over a year now, it's very smooth and haven't had an issue yet. the spool on them is really small compared to competitors for each model number though, so the 3000 makes the most sense seeing as it's a big spool on the same frame as the smaller 2000 and 2500. also has more drag. supposedly weighs the same as the 2000 and 2500 too.
>>2132880on the flipside, you can get even more bang for your buck if you select a smaller rod like a light/medium light setup. there are a lot of good panfish rods for like $40. that daiwa aird-x is unbeatable for the price though, but you gotta snag them when they're in stock.
>>2132736sometimes you can get a retarded dea at Walmart when they fuck up and mark something down way too much. Check Brickseek for your local walmarts. I've seen Penn Fierce reels on sale for like $15, and $60 rods on sale for $29 regularly. only thing with Walmart is you gotta inspect the shit for damage inflicted by retard customers since they leave all the rods out for people to play with. check the Lews shit for example.
>>2132887Can you suggest any other good rods/reels similar to the Daiwa AIRD-X and Sienna FG?I really despise EVA foam grips though, cork is my jam.BTW some Daiwas in stock here: https://www.tackledirect.com/daiwa-aird-x-braiding-x-spinning-rods.html
>>2132896I'm sure there are others, but I'm only mentioning ones I have personally owned, don't wanna shill something that may shit out on you. Most of the good cheaper rods unfortunately have foam grips unless you're looking at lighter action rods. For heavier actions, I can suggest the ugly stik elite. It's basically a gx2 at heart. it's not the most sensitive thing obviously, but it is tough. you won't break the tip unless you really do something wrong. I have accidentally raised mine into the ceiling fan and it was fine lol. with ugly stiks like that, I suggest going up in power though, since the tip is flimsier and the rod is more flexy in general due to more fiberglass than graphite. I'd get a medium or medium heavy. I also always prefer one piece rods if you can transport them.
>>2132896I have this as my lighter rod. It's listed as a medium light but it's really like a light. Amazing rod for $39. Handles smaller sized bass just fine, haven't caught anything bigger than about a 1.5 pounder on it though. Throws everything from a 1/32oz to 1/8oz lure amazingly. I use it with 6lb mono.> https://www.lews.com/en/shop/rods/wmpsr
>>2132754Nips, chinks, whatever. Same shit when talking about Asians who suck up all the fish.
>>2132686>>2132813Magic brand dough baits are ass, they also peddle those dough bait hooks because their own stuff is so bad it just falls off normal hooks. Use powerbait instead or a reputable recipe that a dedicated carp or catfish angler might use. The hatchery thing is a myth perpetuated by "match the hatch" trout autists, any opportunistic eating fish will suck down dough: trout, bass, catfish, sunfish, crappie, etc.
>>2132169Bro, just use balled up bread. Everything loves white bread, and it works better than that shit magic dough.

New to fishing and bought a Shakespeare Ugly Stik GX2 combo, will I regret it?
>>2133071No. People say the reel eventually falls apart, but who knows how common that is. You can always replace the reel if that happens.
Am I the only one who rather shop equipment from Walmart rather than cabelas/pro shop?
>>2133071The good thing about being new is you have no baseline of how good or how shit anything is. If you find fishing to end up being something you enjoy, you can spend more for better gear. If not, you're not much down the drain.>>2133077Got enough tackle shops here that I can avoid big chain stores.
>>2133077depends on what I'm looking for. basic shit, I go to walmart. more niche shit, I look at cabelas first, and if they don't have it i just order from somewhere online.
>>2133078that's true. regret would be buying a $300 setup right off the bat and not using it very much.
>>2133071>>2133075The rod is usable for beginners, the reel is shit and will fall apart. Mine did while wet wading and I lost the reel handle.
>>2130873Caught a dink channel cat yesterday while bluegill fishing around lilly pads. >>2133774If all you're doing is bank fishing fairly shallow water, that's all you need. I've got a boat and invite people to go fishing who don't have their own gear/very much of their own gear, and sometimes you find a combo that's a hot bite and its a real day wrecker if you break off that particular rig without having a duplicate on hand. Because of this, I've got a lot of duplicate gear. Besides having duplicate gear, I've got cranks that troll at different depths, in different sizes/actions (at least three colors per category, a bright, a dark, and a shiny), spinners designed to use trailing plastics, spinners which are not, inline spinners, swimbait jigs, weights for bottom rigs in various sizes, soft baits, and topwater gear.If I'm waking to wear I'm fishing, I've got a bag with two 3700 boxes, and that's all I'll take, unless I'm going to do some specific other kind of fishing (live lining for big cats, in a big river, gotta have the heavy weights for bottom rigs, etc). But even if I'm not using most of this gear every time I take the boat out, it's with, because it lives in the boat and why would I unload it?
Why buy anything? Just catch with your bare hands. This is what you retards sound like.

How do I use this? How do I tie it on? Do I use both assist hook or do I take one off? I'm gonna use this to jig for mackerel off the pier in California
>>2134106i had cum on my hand and didn't want to give the fish herpes
>>2133774Lots of people who are new to fishing buy a bunch of tackle based on looks, not realizing that some things that look like they would work amazingly don't work very well at all. I was guilty of that.
>>2134102It's more for a straight up and down presentation or jigging from a drifting boat. You let it drop to the bottom, then reel and pump the rod vigorously for about 25 cranks, then open the bail and let it drift down again. Change up the pattern a bit if you want, until you start getting bites. Depending on the type of mackerel, you may want to add a steel leader. You tie like any other lure: through the open hole, with the best knot in your repertoire, and definitely use some sort of leader. I would also keep both hooks on. Hell, I have seen modified butter knives that use this same principle and work quite effectively.
>>2130877Are you mantis
>>2134044I mean it would probably catch catfish but that doesn't necessarily make it good bait
>>2134102https://youtu.be/j1yV4zpZzQII use the technique this guy uses and gets me loads of mackI assume Spanish mackerel and Atlantic mackerel will respond the same way
>>2134079you forgot the most important part>California license plate
>>2133007that sure is one mean looking pike!
>>2134176Thats a white sucker i caught on da pinky. Here's one of many pike on da pinky.
Finally finishing my jon boat to bass boat conversion. Bought a 1974 sears 12ft jon boat and painted it, made a casting deck with two small hatches and one big one, made a floor, and made a back deck with a central hatch. Then carpeted them. Also had to remake the transom boards. I'm installing all of that this weekend once I give the boat one last coat of paint. I took it out with a buddy last weekend without the decks just to see how it'd do and it was great. No leaks or anything. Also just got transom wheels for it because I don't have a trailer but I don't need one desu. Going to be great for the summer/fall.
>>2134188Jon boat flats boats conversions are lots of fun. Whatcha got for a motor?
>>2134222Just a transom mount trolling motor for now. Most lakes around me are electric only anyway. I had thought about getting an electric outboard motor but for the price and HP it doesn't really make sense. I'm thinking of getting a bow mount trolling motor and maybe a better transom mount.
>>2134102How many grams is it? That looks like it might be a shore jig or super light vertical jig. I do a lot of shore jigging here in SD. It's a really versatile technique and there's not really a wrong way to work them.
Never a-fucking-gain will I take my trans gf, we went on a 3 hour drive to a lake, and she demanded to go back home since she forgot her dilator.
>>2134287Oh shit, you're right. I didn't even pay attention to the size of the hand. That's definitely a lighter weight. Good for surf and jetty fishing.
>tfw looking at deep sea fishing boats I'll likely never be able to affordLooks like it's gonna be charters for me boys
>>2134358Save all the money you would spend on charters and buy a boat
>>2134359Buying a boat for deep sea fishing is one thing, paying all the ongoing expenses is where it really gets expensive.
>>2134358You're looking at trendy shit. There are affordable boats, there are blue collar fishermen, you just don't see them on videos because their boats aren't "cool" nor do they want to be YouTube famous.
>>2134358How much is too much? 100k?
>>2134389I could drop 200k, but the costs of maintaining and docking would be where it really started to hurt.
>>2133682sounds like a gay sense of reasoning
How do I know the government isn't putting in fluoride and feminizing drugs into stocked trout as a scheme
>>2134416I too am curious what hatchery trout eat.I'd guess probably corn and onions because it's cheap...so yeah, estrogen and glysophate if that's the case
>>2134416>>2134442I would be more worried about bottom feeders/scavengers like fresh water crayfish Look it up
Anyone here ever use tenkara for steelhead?
>>2131253what's the best tide for solo ocean kayak? which seasons which month that's safe to go kayak? I'm scared to go alone lol..
>>2134635The best season is when the combined air and water temperature is high enough that risk of hypothermia is low. The best time is when winds are low. Tide really doesn't matter unless you are launching from like rocks or navigating a tidal inlet or river.
i have one of these lying around my dad gave me a few years ago still in the package. should i get a mr crappie rod to go with or something else? im going to use it as a backup light setup obviously for crappie and other panfish.
Picked up some new toys
>>2134596I plan on doing it this year at some point. What rod are you looking at?
>>2131393Gorgeous brookie.>>2131590Excellent at night or dusk. Its awesome to see a bass slam them.Caught a monster brookie at 15inches.
>>2133465>catch a woman on hook and line then take her fishingDisgusting tattoos. What's the difference between that woman and a catfish
>>2131590 i have the bottom right corner one, or at least something extremely simliar - do you just cast and reel these back in? or should i be pausing/twitching/varying speeds? never really had much luck desu
First time chatterbait user here.Casted about 20 times with it last night. All the paint from the jig head is completely gone on a dark chatterbait now.Why did this happen?
>>2134809Scratching it on rocks?
>>2134804>What's the difference between that woman and a catfishI aint never had sex with a woman
>>2131235I just started fishing in my 16 foot prospector solo. Caught a couple 6-8lb pike trolling with crank baits this past weekend. Works very well when the water is somewhat calm imo.
>>2134804>>2134818One has whiskers and the other is a catfish!
>>2134814>Scratching it on rocks?Never thought of that. They may be it.I thought somehow the metal plate was scratching it during the retrieve.
>>2134596I think skid or someone caught a nice chrome last fall on a cane pole.
>>2134800Thats a trophy fish in many places.
Temporarily rigged up with this until I can get some more appropriate trailersAny recommendations? Daiwa says 6-10cm
>>2134903I'm totally new to this kind of bait so...
>>2134903I don't really know anything about bass jigs but if you put oversized trailers like that on, they're gonna sink much slower so keep that in mind on your retrieve.
>>2134923Mainly going for perch and pike, the jigs are smaller then they look 8-10 grams.I'm definitely thinking of a smaller trailer, something with more flutter like a standard grub or twin tailsHow will a bigger trailer make it sink slower? Surface area? Help a brainlet out
So 100 yards of 4lb fluoro fishing line is like $2 on ali, while 30 yards of Rio's 5x tippet is $13. Walmart brand is $9. Diameters are basically the same. Unless the ali stuff is completely lying, which I can test easily, aren't we being ripped off by fly fishing companies?
>>2134996>aren't we being ripped off by fly fishing companies?started back in the 90´when it became really bad, when American and Chinese/japanese companies took the market
>>2134950Yeah, it's more adding more surface area and resistance.
>>2135012yea okay, makes sense since the surface area to weight ratio is pretty low
>>2135007The Chinese shit will be the pig iron equivalent of actual fluoro.
>>2135052China = bad
>>2134794I'm looking at an amago since they're advertising it as their "big fish big water" rod>>2134834I actually bought a cane pole specifically because of skid and only used it a few times. It's fun, but I really want to try out tenkara since it seems so fun
>>2130873Does anyone make 1/32 oz slip bobbers? I can only find Thills down to 1/16 oz and my tiny ballheads and Trout Magnets don't always sink properly with them.
>>2130873Going out tonight to hopefully catch a Tarpon if that does work out then likely some video(s) will be made showing how to do other fishing stuff hard to do videos where I am because the good places normally have people playing music or cussing so its hard to make videos when that is going on can't make money with copyright music
>>2135052If it's within 10% of stated # and diameter, who cares. Fluoro isn't rocket science.
>>2134635If the ocean is cold enough to cause hypothermia where you are, have a drysuit if you are going alone otherwise it would practically be a death sentence if you got separated from your kayak somehow. Other than that, just make sure there are no heavy winds forecasted and that the surf forecast is pretty calm. There's a lot of info online to sort through if you search "swell forecast kayak fishing".Realistically, solo ocean kayak fishing is dangerous as far as hobbies go and it's not irrational to be scared. Even just a deep cut leaves you potentially hours from help if you go offshore a few miles and possibly in serious trouble. Do your research on safety before you go and take it seriously, and it's probably a good idea to see if you can find somebody to take you along for the first few times. That said, everything you do from driving to going on a hike is a risk. Ocean kayaking is legitimately some of the most fun fishing you can do, so it can be worth the risk depending on your risk tolerance.
>>2130873How much of a market is there for used fishing shit? I don't use most of this shit and wouldn't miss it if were gone. Could I get enough out of this stuff for it to be worth the effort to sell?
>>2134996It's basically a holdover from when tippet material was different from normal fishing line. Normal fishing line is also generally sold by the breaking strength instead of diameter so it requires fly fisherman to do some math.
>>2135086the skinniest thill float should be able to be cocked with 1/32 oz. they sell it as a spring fixed float and as slip float.https://www.lurenet.com/thill-america-s-favorite-floats-3-8-in-pencil-slip
>>2135145People will buy it if it's reasonably priced and will probably haggle to get it cheaper.
>>2135159That's easily 200 bucks worth of lures and close to that much for soft plastics. IDK how much anyone would be willing to buy the whole lot for, if I'd post it on Ebay the bidding would start at like 95. Parting everything out would be too much work.
>>2135169This is a spotted bass btw
>>2135117absolutely true, my friend's father found a skeleton in a wetsuit one morning that turned out to be a missing kayaker from Maine
>>2135145selling it as a whole will probably get you more bites. just cut your losses and sell it for a steal. at least that way you will easily sell it and not have to bother doing it piece by piece.
>>2133829I've never got one of the big bull spawning males with the giant foreheads. Biggest I ever get are the palm-sized ones that turn pink to show out,
>>2135145>>2135165that's a solid 5 bucks at a garage sale when a woman rings it upi had an old lady give me a tackle box full of gear a couple of weeks ago because it was in the trunk of a car she bought and i was fishing in the lake across from her house
>>2135385See this is another problem, dumb old women in garage sales not knowing what shit is worth. Fewer people are going to look online for half-price on a Plano full of lures when they can hunt around garage sales and patrol the lakeshore at winter pool for less than 20 bucks.
>>2135385People who run garage sales usually have no idea what their stuff is worth and overprice it to obscene levels or under price it so badly that you can really find some deals.
>>2135483i find that if i approach a female garage sale operator with a full erection, they practically give me whatever i'm looking atgot a kayak, oar, and a really cool jar of ball bearings last year for 20 dollars and 8 inches of obvious boner
>>2135052Chances are it's actually probably better in terms of chemistry than anything made elsewhere. Production of Fluorocarbons is very carcinogenic so chances are the Chinese are still using the good stuff while first world countries with workers rights are probably struggling to find safer alternatives (read; make shitty but safe chemicals work). Shit tons of leather goods come out of India, because the process is much cheaper when you can just throw your solution of hexavalent chromium into the fucking river when it's spent.
>>2135165Lol that shit will sit on eBay for 200 years at 95$
>>2135145what are you thoughts on that arbogast buzz plug and jitterbug?
>>2130895if you think that's bad, you should see this Jewess I matched with on bumble. angles and lighting are everything. never again will I swipe right on a jewess ever again, I will not fall for the khazar milkers meme.
>>2135165>>2135483pot calling the kettle black lmaoFishing tackle generally has shit re-sale value. The exception is basically for high quality stuff that isn't made any more. Used fishing lures are commonly sold as bulk sales typically inside a tackle box.Even for highly durable tackle like weights the trade volume on used stuff is extremely low. I know divers who stopped going for weights and such because they just sit and sit and no one wants to buy them.
>>2135604what do you mean meme, they're demonstrably the most intelligent people on earth. If you want smart kids you have kids with a jew.
I fishmog everyone in this thread.
>>2135616If they were that smart, they'd have never accepted being saddled with the state of Israel. If they had just become a stateless diaspora, they'd be entirely untouchable.
>>2134141No, but I was shocked at my crab claw hand when I looked back at the pic.
>>2135616>have kids with a jewbut then they'd be jewish
being new to fishing and unjaded is based. I have a kayak I fish off of, and I saw this smallish bass in clear water, so I'm trying to get him to bite my spoon, ass of a sudden, these three huge (for me) fish swim by, they must have been like 2 feet, just cruising by right under my boat. I was thrilled, and glad they didn't bite my lure because i would had had no idea how to land something like that. Shit was cash, wish I knew what they were
>>2135077The Amago would be my personal rod choice. I don't have any experience with Tenkara USA and personally fish a Dragontail Mizuchi which is a small stream rod. It will be a challenge for sure but certainly fun.
>tenkara rodsi just discovered this and i'm really excited, my uncle is a seasoned fly fisher and he swears to certain aliexpress rods being almost as good and sometimes better than the big name brand stuff you can get here, guys owned up to probably 30-40 rods at once at his peak and he still makes his own rods from blanks but tenkara is new to him (no rods of this type are sold domestically here)anyone have experience with tenkara rods sold on aliexpress?
Make this the next picture
>>2135866she don't even got a fish
Hey lads, I'm flying out to montana for the summer and am bringing my fly rod. My buddy there has never been fly fishing so I was planning on bringing a small dinky practice rod (doesn't have a reel and is only in two pieces) so he doesn't tie up my fishing time while he practices, but I've never traveled with multiple rods in a my case. Mine looks like pic related, will it hurt my rod if I fly with the practice rod in the case too?
Saw my first bean in the surf. Too bad my beach doesn't have sand crabs yet. Crazy how shallow they'll get.
>>2135877Sleeve them both and then put them in the case. They'll be good to go.
>>2135906I've had them bump my feet in 3" of water. Gulp makes a sandcrab plastic if you're seeing them, also gulp sand worms work.
>>2135920Yeah, it was probably 15 feet away from me in probably 8 inches of water. Always have gulp sandworms on me but they've only produced dink perch so far this year.
>>2135851>tfw an unwashed pleb uses anything but an unbreakable ugly stick around mei bet you don't even catch 500 bass per day exclusively on banjo minnows
>>2135964Flying Minnows only son, and 750 bass a day with none being under 5 lbs, on a broken rod with a kite spool for a reel.
>>2130873still a noob fisherman. looking to catch bass. I have to bank fish but there are some good areas around here. I have mainly been fishing a texas rigged worm. got one last week, but still am getting skunked. any suggestions for more success?
>>2136021There's so many factors, but the best first tip is "match the hatch". What are bass feeding on in the area?
Why are my knots so fucking shit. I hooked a nice bass with a spoon, pull him to the boat, and my fucking knot goes on me. Now thisd beautiful bass is gonna starve with my fucking spoon stuck in its face and I feel like shitHow do I prevent this bros, what are your fool proof knots
>>2136115Literally anything other than an overhand knot, did you even try to learn how to tie fishing knots?
>>2136129I agree. If you're tying random clumps of small knots and hoping they hold won't do. Try some simpler knots to start, and then if you want branch out. I try a lot of different ones, but I think the easiest to learn as a starter is a cinch knot or improved cinch knot, with at least 5 twists. Look up some videos, and until you feel it's right, keep cutting and retying. Build a muscle memory for good knots. It helps in much more than fishing.
>>2135874Nice river chub. Heres on i nabbed in spawning colors on a yozuri.
>>2136129>>2136139I've been using the fisherman's knot, 4-5 twists, but it slips sometimes, I'm not sure whats wrong with it. I think it's palomar from here on our for me
>>2136172Palomar is probably the best, but with a lot of the lures I use it's a pain to tie well. I think it's fun to learn, so I try a lot of different ones.
>>2136172Are you setting your drag properly? 25-30% the breaking strength of the line. I set mine by lifting that much weight off the ground till it just starts to pull drag.
>>2136175Yeah, drag was set properly, I could hear it ticking away when the fish was fighting so that wasn't the problem. I looked at the line after and it didn't look like a clean break, the knot just slipped. Really not sure why, gonna have to hit up some youtube videos or something, but I think I'll stick with Palomar for a while, seems less likely to have that issueI crimp my barbs so I'm hoping he was able to just shake it loose, didn't look too deep in
>>2136163all chubs are good chubs but the best chubs are the chubby chubs
>>2134287its a 7g jig i plan on jigging for pacific chub macks
>>2136180They make killer live bait
>>2136181You're over thinking it. Literally the easiest fish to catch on the west coast.
>>2136172Make sure you are tying the improved clinch (other name for fisherman's knot), not the normal clinch. Could also try the palomar knot if it keeps giving you trouble, it's really hard to fuck up. The Trilene knot is similar to the fisherman's/clinch but with a slightly better breaking strength. Also make sure you aren't using old, sun-damaged line.
>>2130873A pretty good smallmouth I caught last weekend. Weighed in at 2.3 lbs. caught on a nice little jerkbait. I also caught my first ever bass on topwater today. It was 3.5 lbs on a whopper plopper.
>>2136215Didn’t add the picture because I’m a fucking retard
Matt hasnt posted all thread. Wtf bros i hope he ok
going fishing at a state park bros. think I will try out some different lures and rigs. have a blessed Saturday.
If you like the regular trout magnet, you 100% need to try out the mini. I don't know how this stupid thing is so good, it's just a tiny tube of soft plastic. Not only do you catch smaller than 6 inch panfish but I have also big catching big ass bass and catfish.
Going to Sweden next weekend, mainly targeting pike and perchAnything here you would recommend?
Anyone ever tried one of these Evergreen Gizmo topwater bugs? I randomly bought one because I thought it looked neat and have always opined the lack of topwater bug presentations for conventional tackle.
>>2136589I mean pretty much everything there will catch pikeIf I had to choose, the spook heddon, the westin swim, the atom spoon, and the big firetiger shad on the bottom left corner
>>2136647how do you rig it?
>>2136463I have had insanely consistent bite with those when I used them ice fishing for trout (including my biggest brown which broke off at the hole), but I hate how shitty the hooks are on them. I stopped using them because I can only go like 3 or 4 trout before the hook breaks off in the mouth.
>>2136739are they pre rigged?
>>2136728Just line through the eye, kind of fish it like a frog or popper
>>2136463>>2136739I always use the head and a Powerbait Honey Worm for panfish. Occasionally get dink bass and channel cats as bycatch.
>>2136743No, the soft plastic and the 1/200 oz size 14 jighead are seperate.
>>2136743The ones I had for trout ice fishing were. They were just like the image posted, but red. I thought they imitated bloodworms really well which are a common food source for trout here.
Figuring out helgrammites lads. I think I need brown estaz though.
