Are there any recommended books that describe habitat and techniques for common game fish? Like where to look for them, what type of lures to use, etc.?

My neighbor took me trout fishing in his little aluminum boat, was the first time I'd been fishing since I was like 12 years old. I had a great time and want to take up fishing again.
>>
>>2131179
Honestly dude, just type that into youtube and you'll learn more than any book.

I'm hitting up the Mississippi river again tomorrow in a desperate attempt to catch some trophy cats. I've been shore fishing and haven't caught a single catfish yet, let alone a trophy cat.

>tried a santee cooper rig with 2 oz sinker, current didn't seem that strong but it was too much to keep it anchored
>decided to get some big heavy weights and anchor that shit down, and got a 10 oz sinker. It anchored it down, but made it nearly impossible to cast

Is the river just not the place for me bros? Should I just try to hit up a lake that has catfish?

How are canoes or rowboats for the poorfag lake fisherman? I've been out on actual boats plenty of times, but can't always rely on my richfag friends to take me out obviously when I want to go fishing.

If you are mostly going solo, fishing kayak is a good option. Modern sit-on-top ones are really nice, even a dirt cheap one like a Tamarack. I take mine out lake trout fishing and it does pretty well. It's super stable, I have had it out in 25 mph wind (drifting back to the launch, not really possible to fish otherwise in that wind) and have never tipped or had any close calls. You cannot really comfortably fish in more than 10 mph wind, though, unless you are trolling or drifting. Only 50lb, too, so easy to transport. The main downside is that it's not particularly fast, I can effortlessly maintain 2.3 MPH and max out at maybe 3.5 MPH with no wind. I do not have much canoe experience, but generally I find they aren't worth it with just one person unless you need the cargo space plus the ability to portage easier. If you have the money, a large pedal kayak like a Hobie is an absolutely amazing little boat that can even handle ocean fishing without much trouble.
>>
>>2131253
>>2131235
Forgot to mention, Tamarack kayaks are dirt cheap for a reason. They have not great quality control (one of the handles was installed twisted up so it half ripped off, and the bungee attachments are iffy) and the stock seat is kind of mediocre. A couple hundred bucks would probably get you a much better one. Tamaracks do make a really cost effective way to get on the water, though.
>>
>>2131257
>>2131253
I forgot all about pedal kayaks. My experience with kayaks in general is pretty little though admittedly and I figured they would just be too small. I'll look into them thanks for the information anon. And why specifically do you think canoes aren't worth it? I'm not unfit so I wouldn't have a problem rowing their size. And their space would be pretty nice considering I like to bring my wife every so often. And what about aftermarket anchors for the drifting problem? Or would it just spin me in circles.

It absolutely is better. In general, Japs don't mind spending more for quality over quantity. But specifically, their inshore waters are heavily pressured so their techniques have to be that much more refined. That's why you see a lot of fancy finesse gear coming out of Japan. Here in murrica a spiderman spincaster combo, giant red-white bobber, rusty eagle claw hooks, and some fucking worms you dug out are good enough for your local untouched pristine stream or lake.

You might need to stretch your budget a little bit to $100, get something better than absolute bargain-basement gear. My suggestion is the Ugly Stik GX2 combo in whatever length/weight you want, they're usually $50. The rod is basically unbreakable and if the reels fall apart after a year or two, spend $30 on a replacement Shimano.

I just picked up pic related (Shakespeare Wild Series Panfish combo) for $50 out the door as a loaner rod, haven't had it out yet but liked the build and feel in the store.

if you're gonna get an ugly stik gx2 or elite, spend a little more and buy the sienna fg or penn pursuit 3 reel instead of the combo.
>>
>>2132867
Pretty much just the first 3 because they're in my budget range
>>2132869
I might upgrade the reel later depending on its performance
>>2132870
the sienna might be something I bump my budget up for, I'll be getting a feel of them when I go feel them in person later this week, need to pick up some new bait as well, but I don't wanna go too high as I have to budget for some other things
>>
>>2132736
>>2132870
This is good advice if you're trying to get the best quality/dollar. Ugly Stik Elite series with a decent reel should be about $80-90 and is nicer than a GX2 combo.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-KNlxIO70o

If anon just wants to get out with his dad for as little money as possible I think a combo is fine.
>>
>>2132879
they are solid reels for the price. not much competition at that pricepoint. the penn pursuit 3 has better drag for a little bit more. I personally have a sienna fg and have used it for over a year now, it's very smooth and haven't had an issue yet. the spool on them is really small compared to competitors for each model number though, so the 3000 makes the most sense seeing as it's a big spool on the same frame as the smaller 2000 and 2500. also has more drag. supposedly weighs the same as the 2000 and 2500 too.
>>
>>2132880
on the flipside, you can get even more bang for your buck if you select a smaller rod like a light/medium light setup. there are a lot of good panfish rods for like $40. that daiwa aird-x is unbeatable for the price though, but you gotta snag them when they're in stock.
>>
>>2132736
sometimes you can get a retarded dea at Walmart when they fuck up and mark something down way too much. Check Brickseek for your local walmarts. I've seen Penn Fierce reels on sale for like $15, and $60 rods on sale for $29 regularly. only thing with Walmart is you gotta inspect the shit for damage inflicted by retard customers since they leave all the rods out for people to play with. check the Lews shit for example.
>>
>>2132887
Can you suggest any other good rods/reels similar to the Daiwa AIRD-X and Sienna FG?
I really despise EVA foam grips though, cork is my jam.

BTW some Daiwas in stock here:
https://www.tackledirect.com/daiwa-aird-x-braiding-x-spinning-rods.html
>>
>>2132896
I'm sure there are others, but I'm only mentioning ones I have personally owned, don't wanna shill something that may shit out on you. Most of the good cheaper rods unfortunately have foam grips unless you're looking at lighter action rods. For heavier actions, I can suggest the ugly stik elite. It's basically a gx2 at heart. it's not the most sensitive thing obviously, but it is tough. you won't break the tip unless you really do something wrong. I have accidentally raised mine into the ceiling fan and it was fine lol. with ugly stiks like that, I suggest going up in power though, since the tip is flimsier and the rod is more flexy in general due to more fiberglass than graphite. I'd get a medium or medium heavy. I also always prefer one piece rods if you can transport them.
>>
>>2132896
I have this as my lighter rod. It's listed as a medium light but it's really like a light. Amazing rod for $39. Handles smaller sized bass just fine, haven't caught anything bigger than about a 1.5 pounder on it though. Throws everything from a 1/32oz to 1/8oz lure amazingly. I use it with 6lb mono.

Magic brand dough baits are ass, they also peddle those dough bait hooks because their own stuff is so bad it just falls off normal hooks. Use powerbait instead or a reputable recipe that a dedicated carp or catfish angler might use. The hatchery thing is a myth perpetuated by "match the hatch" trout autists, any opportunistic eating fish will suck down dough: trout, bass, catfish, sunfish, crappie, etc.
>>
>>2132169

I retrieve other people's shit just because I hate seeing thick ass mono nests hanging right over the water. People leave shit that is so easy to get with minimal effort. Not to mention all the Yum wrappers and worm containers retards just throw down. I'm no some eco-hippy, but I just don't understand the logic behind throwing something down and leaving it. It transcends laziness. It's got to be low-cognitive function. I just envision some borderline retard doing it.

what's with people having so much tackle, most of it stuff they don't use. someone I know wanted to get into fishing so he bought literally buckets loads of "fishing gear" from an estate sale. most of it wasl fucking trash. random assortment of snelled hooks, wire leaders, other unopened terminal tackle. he asked me to look through his stuff and pick out the good stuff because he was just getting into fishing

I managed to pick out the rooster tails, appropriately sized hooks for small bass and sunfish, bobbers, and told him to soak worms on one rod and cast the spinners with the other. Even for me, all the stuff I use when fishing fits inside a small storage case that fits in my pockets.

If all you're doing is bank fishing fairly shallow water, that's all you need. I've got a boat and invite people to go fishing who don't have their own gear/very much of their own gear, and sometimes you find a combo that's a hot bite and its a real day wrecker if you break off that particular rig without having a duplicate on hand. Because of this, I've got a lot of duplicate gear. Besides having duplicate gear, I've got cranks that troll at different depths, in different sizes/actions (at least three colors per category, a bright, a dark, and a shiny), spinners designed to use trailing plastics, spinners which are not, inline spinners, swimbait jigs, weights for bottom rigs in various sizes, soft baits, and topwater gear.

If I'm waking to wear I'm fishing, I've got a bag with two 3700 boxes, and that's all I'll take, unless I'm going to do some specific other kind of fishing (live lining for big cats, in a big river, gotta have the heavy weights for bottom rigs, etc).

But even if I'm not using most of this gear every time I take the boat out, it's with, because it lives in the boat and why would I unload it?

Lots of people who are new to fishing buy a bunch of tackle based on looks, not realizing that some things that look like they would work amazingly don't work very well at all. I was guilty of that.
>>
>>2134102
It's more for a straight up and down presentation or jigging from a drifting boat. You let it drop to the bottom, then reel and pump the rod vigorously for about 25 cranks, then open the bail and let it drift down again. Change up the pattern a bit if you want, until you start getting bites. Depending on the type of mackerel, you may want to add a steel leader. You tie like any other lure: through the open hole, with the best knot in your repertoire, and definitely use some sort of leader. I would also keep both hooks on. Hell, I have seen modified butter knives that use this same principle and work quite effectively.

Finally finishing my jon boat to bass boat conversion. Bought a 1974 sears 12ft jon boat and painted it, made a casting deck with two small hatches and one big one, made a floor, and made a back deck with a central hatch. Then carpeted them. Also had to remake the transom boards. I'm installing all of that this weekend once I give the boat one last coat of paint.
I took it out with a buddy last weekend without the decks just to see how it'd do and it was great. No leaks or anything. Also just got transom wheels for it because I don't have a trailer but I don't need one desu. Going to be great for the summer/fall.

I'm definitely thinking of a smaller trailer, something with more flutter like a standard grub or twin tails

How will a bigger trailer make it sink slower? Surface area? Help a brainlet out

So 100 yards of 4lb fluoro fishing line is like $2 on ali, while 30 yards of Rio's 5x tippet is $13. Walmart brand is $9. Diameters are basically the same. Unless the ali stuff is completely lying, which I can test easily, aren't we being ripped off by fly fishing companies?

>>
>>2135052
If it's within 10% of stated # and diameter, who cares. Fluoro isn't rocket science.
>>
>>2134635
If the ocean is cold enough to cause hypothermia where you are, have a drysuit if you are going alone otherwise it would practically be a death sentence if you got separated from your kayak somehow. Other than that, just make sure there are no heavy winds forecasted and that the surf forecast is pretty calm. There's a lot of info online to sort through if you search "swell forecast kayak fishing".

Realistically, solo ocean kayak fishing is dangerous as far as hobbies go and it's not irrational to be scared. Even just a deep cut leaves you potentially hours from help if you go offshore a few miles and possibly in serious trouble. Do your research on safety before you go and take it seriously, and it's probably a good idea to see if you can find somebody to take you along for the first few times. That said, everything you do from driving to going on a hike is a risk. Ocean kayaking is legitimately some of the most fun fishing you can do, so it can be worth the risk depending on your risk tolerance.

i just discovered this and i'm really excited, my uncle is a seasoned fly fisher and he swears to certain aliexpress rods being almost as good and sometimes better than the big name brand stuff you can get here, guys owned up to probably 30-40 rods at once at his peak and he still makes his own rods from blanks but tenkara is new to him (no rods of this type are sold domestically here)
anyone have experience with tenkara rods sold on aliexpress?

Hey lads, I'm flying out to montana for the summer and am bringing my fly rod. My buddy there has never been fly fishing so I was planning on bringing a small dinky practice rod (doesn't have a reel and is only in two pieces) so he doesn't tie up my fishing time while he practices, but I've never traveled with multiple rods in a my case. Mine looks like pic related, will it hurt my rod if I fly with the practice rod in the case too?
>>
Saw my first bean in the surf. Too bad my beach doesn't have sand crabs yet. Crazy how shallow they'll get.
>>
>>2135877
Sleeve them both and then put them in the case. They'll be good to go.
>>
>>2135906
I've had them bump my feet in 3" of water. Gulp makes a sandcrab plastic if you're seeing them, also gulp sand worms work.
>>
>>2135920
Yeah, it was probably 15 feet away from me in probably 8 inches of water. Always have gulp sandworms on me but they've only produced dink perch so far this year.

>tfw an unwashed pleb uses anything but an unbreakable ugly stick around me
i bet you don't even catch 500 bass per day exclusively on banjo minnows
>>
>>2135964
Flying Minnows only son, and 750 bass a day with none being under 5 lbs, on a broken rod with a kite spool for a reel.

still a noob fisherman. looking to catch bass. I have to bank fish but there are some good areas around here. I have mainly been fishing a texas rigged worm. got one last week, but still am getting skunked. any suggestions for more success?
>>
>>2136021
There's so many factors, but the best first tip is "match the hatch". What are bass feeding on in the area?
>>
Why are my knots so fucking shit. I hooked a nice bass with a spoon, pull him to the boat, and my fucking knot goes on me. Now thisd beautiful bass is gonna starve with my fucking spoon stuck in its face and I feel like shit
How do I prevent this bros, what are your fool proof knots
>>
>>2136115
Literally anything other than an overhand knot, did you even try to learn how to tie fishing knots?
>>
>>2136129
I agree. If you're tying random clumps of small knots and hoping they hold won't do. Try some simpler knots to start, and then if you want branch out. I try a lot of different ones, but I think the easiest to learn as a starter is a cinch knot or improved cinch knot, with at least 5 twists. Look up some videos, and until you feel it's right, keep cutting and retying. Build a muscle memory for good knots. It helps in much more than fishing.

>>

>>2136139
I've been using the fisherman's knot, 4-5 twists, but it slips sometimes, I'm not sure whats wrong with it. I think it's palomar from here on our for me
>>
>>2136172
Palomar is probably the best, but with a lot of the lures I use it's a pain to tie well. I think it's fun to learn, so I try a lot of different ones.
>>
>>2136172
Are you setting your drag properly? 25-30% the breaking strength of the line. I set mine by lifting that much weight off the ground till it just starts to pull drag.
>>
>>2136175
Yeah, drag was set properly, I could hear it ticking away when the fish was fighting so that wasn't the problem. I looked at the line after and it didn't look like a clean break, the knot just slipped. Really not sure why, gonna have to hit up some youtube videos or something, but I think I'll stick with Palomar for a while, seems less likely to have that issue
I crimp my barbs so I'm hoping he was able to just shake it loose, didn't look too deep in

>>
>>2136181
You're over thinking it. Literally the easiest fish to catch on the west coast.
>>
>>2136172
Make sure you are tying the improved clinch (other name for fisherman's knot), not the normal clinch. Could also try the palomar knot if it keeps giving you trouble, it's really hard to fuck up. The Trilene knot is similar to the fisherman's/clinch but with a slightly better breaking strength. Also make sure you aren't using old, sun-damaged line.

A pretty good smallmouth I caught last weekend. Weighed in at 2.3 lbs. caught on a nice little jerkbait. I also caught my first ever bass on topwater today. It was 3.5 lbs on a whopper plopper.

going fishing at a state park bros. think I will try out some different lures and rigs. have a blessed Saturday.

If you like the regular trout magnet, you 100% need to try out the mini. I don't know how this stupid thing is so good, it's just a tiny tube of soft plastic. Not only do you catch smaller than 6 inch panfish but I have also big catching big ass bass and catfish.

Anyone ever tried one of these Evergreen Gizmo topwater bugs? I randomly bought one because I thought it looked neat and have always opined the lack of topwater bug presentations for conventional tackle.
>>
>>2136589
I mean pretty much everything there will catch pike

If I had to choose, the spook heddon, the westin swim, the atom spoon, and the big firetiger shad on the bottom left corner
>>
>>2136647
how do you rig it?
>>
>>2136463
I have had insanely consistent bite with those when I used them ice fishing for trout (including my biggest brown which broke off at the hole), but I hate how shitty the hooks are on them. I stopped using them because I can only go like 3 or 4 trout before the hook breaks off in the mouth.
>>
>>2136739
are they pre rigged?
>>
>>2136728
Just line through the eye, kind of fish it like a frog or popper
>>
>>2136463
>>2136739
I always use the head and a Powerbait Honey Worm for panfish. Occasionally get dink bass and channel cats as bycatch.
>>
>>2136743
No, the soft plastic and the 1/200 oz size 14 jighead are seperate.
>>
>>2136743
The ones I had for trout ice fishing were. They were just like the image posted, but red. I thought they imitated bloodworms really well which are a common food source for trout here.
