Thru hikers get in here. LARPers strictly forbidden
>>
What's wrong with day hiking and staying in airbnbs? How is it larping if I still get outside and see stuff during the day? Plus I can go to multiple different areas, you are stuck on the same path.

nothing wrong with it. enjoy it and fuck people like op who think otherwise. I am going to happily pedal my ebike and setup my hammock and just to really piss of the haters, I am going to setup the folding solar panels and portable power station too.

Anyone that knows about knifes, I'd like to buy that's sturdy enough, that I could use for simple woodworking. Like bow making in the wild.
Any suggestions, should I be looking to get 2 different knifes?

When I think of other people that don't thru hike but think they /out/ I have to literally cringe.

Once I met a girl on trail who seemed cute and chill AF, but when I realized she didn't have even a single piece of dynema in her kit I just started pulling 30 mile days until I lost her.

What a bitch

any advice on the Long Trail NOBO around July/August this summer? Doing a few shakedowns in the southeast US beforehand and I think I have a good general idea (read through GMC's guidebook, talked to prior AT-thru-ing friends, etc) but just wondering if anyone has any particular tips?
>>
>>2094559
Bugs, mostly deer flies and mosquitoes. Hot and humid. Every trail will be roots and rocks to walk across. Mud. Mice will try and raid your food each night. Water is plentiful so no need to carry more than a liter at a time. Wear gaiters, spray all your gear and clothes with permethrin. Picaridin bug spray is generally better than deet. July/August is probably outside of pollen season, but if you have allergies bring Benadryl. You shouldn’t need anything colder than a 40 degree bag, and something like a zlite.
>>
>>2094616
are the black flies still bad in July/August? I've heard that in May/June bug pressure is super intense but I just don't know how much it's gonna let up before I head up. I'm trying to decide between a tarp plus a bug bivy or dropping the bug bivy and just wearing a cheapo headnet while sleeping.

Planning on bringing my 35 degree bag just bc it's what I have. And probably gonna do a 1/8" CCF pad on the bottom with a torso-length XLite on top just to increase comfort and bc I really haven't had good experiences with just foam pads, at least in terms of comfort.

Should I still go with gaiters if I'm planning on wearing long pants? And if so, I've heard good things about Dirty Girl gaiters so would those be a good option?
>>
>>2094559
Be prepared for rain. The green mountains are in a very wet corridor. Also, it's recommended to bring an alcohol stove as fuel canisters can be difficult to come by. The bugs should let up a bit by then, but still plan for them. There are tons of shelters/cabins on the trail and it shouldn't be overcrowded that time of year. That being said, a minimal shelter would be fine. I live in Mass and I'm planning a LT hike for September. Too many people during the leaf peeping season.
>>
>>2094645
Dirty Girls with shorts, or "real" gaiters with pants. You're going to be very hot in pants though in August. My suggestion (and what I wear in summer living up here) is Dirty Girl gaiters and some sort of convertible pants. That way you have pants at night but can strip down to shorts during the day. The Northeast in July/August usually has a three or four brutal weeks - where it's 85-90 and humid. Don't forget a tube of skinglide unless you like walking around with a chafed butthole. Bring rainpants, a raincoat, and either a waterproof pack or a pack cover as well.

Easy as fuck dude, there's a lottery every morning that never is overcrowded as long as you nobo like a big dick.. Just factor in a couple of days extra just in case, its at the south most ranger station below bishop at like.. Independence iirc? Look it up, it also includes a summit of half dome with it.. You can use that as a easy way to get a permit for HD whenever you want to.

Though the secret is out now I guess.
>>
>>2095966
Really should be said though that if you're actually really wanting to do the shitshow that is halfdome and can't get a permit, do the same thing but get a back country permit that is good for that last campsite on that one trail that runs along into the PCT. The rangers don't camp out at the trailhead to the dome so they leave from the valley so as long as you're up before them you're fine.. Sunrise on halfdome is lit AF fuck anyways so, its kinda win winz, they don't check permits for people coming down the trail (when I've done this)

There are designated spots along the trail. Most of them are shelters and one is tent platforms. I plan on staying in shelters and one night at the tent site. The only downside is no fires are permitted on the trail. I had forgot and someone on trail reminded me of it just the other day. It's supposed to be in the 30's at night and raining here and there. So that's a huge bummer. Oh well. At least the weather will be nice and cool for hiking and I'm really hoping I beat the bugs. Getting out before the bugs get crazy is my main objective. I'll look into that NALMC loop. Sounds comfy.

There's nothing wrong with it at all, thru hikers get airbnbs and hotel rooms all the time.. Also "hike your own hike" fuck the haters. The only thing you miss out on by not camping camping is your range /out/. If you're not camping you're probably never getting further out from a road than 10 miles.. And if you're not thru hiking probably never more than 40. Not having to turn around means you can get twice as far with your supplies, that is the very meaning of thru hiking "to resupply and continue through". If you're into solitude what that really means there's dramatically less people and usually better nature.

I did the AT in a hammock and it worked great for it all considered. They can be hard to sleep in at first. I didn't sleep a wink my first two nights in mine, but eventually sleep exhaustion took over and after that I was used to it. Finding trees has only been a problem for me at high elevations with it, what's probably the issue is you're too worried about the tree bending, when they're small i just set the hammock up ridiculously high so that even when it bends I'm off the ground, never had a tree snap on me yet @210lbs. In know the light enos without a net are good, I assume the others are fine too. Hammocks are definitely the way to go if you want to quickly set camp just about anywhere. I wouldn't do the FT without one.

Good analogy, DUI drivers are fucking degenerates and delusional. DUIs should fuck up people's lives more so than they do already.

Don't be afraid to reassess your needs and pack weight as you go. Wash yourself and clothes and socks in streams often. Drink more water than you think you need and start drinking when you wake up. Stretch throughout the day

Cotton is the material of choice if you're thru hiking in summer/humid conditions guy.. It doesn't smell after weaks like any synthetic and wool dries too slow.

I knew a girl with clubbed thumbs in hs. One of the best banjo players I've known. Which is weird bc thats a lot of thumb movement.
>>

I hiked with one.. One day were camping in a playground outside of a trail town and meet some other hikers and she screams "you have toe thumbs!" This is the moment I learned she even had them.. Who tf notices someone's thumbs.. Also mutants

>>
>>2106810
I was a buyer when it was 5 weeks, I’m currently sitting on week 4 so we’ll see if it ships in the next week or so.
The current lead time is 9 weeks. I suppose they can’t get anyone to work when you can get free gibs
