Are knives unnecessary for backpacking?
Unpopular opinion: not really.Every thread on here and most other outdoor forums people sperg the fuck out about knives. "Hurr durr you gotta get a good fixed blade bro". It's 95% autism. Are knives useful tools? Sure but for your average person doing some day hikes or some overnights a cheap walmart folder will do everything you need, which honestly isn't many things. If you're going hunting, fishing or even long distance and thru hiking a $20 mora will do 99.999% of the jobs you'll come across.

Yes, I’ve been backing my whole life and never once brought a knife
>>1980852The only thing you need for long distance hiking is something like a Victorinox Classic or a Leatherman Micra. Cutting toe nails or oddball shaped pieces of leukotape with a fixed blade is tricky.
>>1980869My gear isn’t cheap because it’s well made and light.
One folding knife is all you need. Anything $20 will do. But I mean if you go hiking and feel like you cut more than you thought, get a nicer knife or something.I wouldn't call them unnecessary, I use mine literally every trip. but I only do shit like sharpen sticks or make a fork or other dumb stuff. If I liked making traps or shit I'd probably want a bigger knife.

>>1980845Dude get a nice pocket knife and call it a day.For the money, kershaw, crkt, kizer, spyderco, or zero tolerance are all fine.If you're doing heavier work you need a 5-40$ hatchet not a 300$ knife.
I carry a knife everyday. It's weird there's guys saying they don't. Even women carry knives when the go out.
>>1980845If you're somewhere cucked and can't own or otherwise carry guns (More like too afraid to break the law) Carry a fat ass knife. >>1980845yep. machetes perform better.
>>1980845I've carried an Opinel 4 for over 500 miles and never used it. >>1981478Then you dont go outside
>>1981478I wouldn’t go that far. I’d say it’s like a 80/20 split with fix blades. 100% if they have it mounted upside down in their shoulder, hanging from their neck, or wrapped the handle in paracord.
>>1981543Hehuhehahuehaheu
You need a good knife if you're an outdoorsman but a good knife is literally a mora. Anything much fancier than that is a larp.

A knife is something so easy to carry that it seems strange to argue about it's necessity. Most people will never actually need a knife unless they purposely seek activities like bush crafting but I would still rather have one and not need it, than need it and not have it. You won't even notice a small knife in your pocket, let alone in a pack.

>>1981789> Cididot who tosses foil into the fireNever baked a potato before, huh?I suppose you drag a full 5 piece cast iron skillet pots & pans and a dutch oven in your pack all the time.
>>1980845If you can get by without one, that's fine, I like having one mainly for food prep, bushmemeing and the occasional hobo stabbing.
>>1980852How else will you defeat your enemies with a flurry of quick jabs?
>>1981926Yes
Nothing is necessary...But a knife makes your life easier and you should probably take one into the woods. Those big monster knives are fucked, but you already know I LARP with one from time to time because it's fun.I usually bring a smaller knife though, just something to use on food. Pic related is great for processing fish if you don't wanna carry a dedicated fillet knife.
>>1981591Price it by the hour it is.
>>1981026Those coke bottle shaped handles look comfy, reminds me of handles William Collins likes to put on his knives, I even wondered if it was one of his.
>>1981990Here's a similar thing for a similar price. Observe how this one doesn't look like hot garbage.
>>1980845>can you avoid the need for a knife for a couple days?Yes. >will having a knife improve your comfort? Also yes. I carry a larger fixed blade for batonning and an opinel for food prep, works for me. Allows me to do comfy camp meals and maybe I'll try out Yuru Comf meals next time.
>>1981951lulz. My pack weight ranges from 5-10lbs. Imagine not doing food prep before you go so you don't have to carry a fucking potato. Neck yourself.
>>1981784That fire was safe alright, babydoll.
>>1981034Lanyards are designed specifically to get in the way when using the knife.
>>1980845Always have a knife. Always have a way to make fire.

>>1982687based broadsword chad
>>1982530You gain control, balance, arguably a more solid if less comfortable grip. I wouldn't use for wood but I don't process wood in the woods with tools. I use dead wood and break it on my knee or on rocks like a caveman. If you cant get through it that way burn it in half

>>1982727So for the several thousands of years that humans have been using knives with ergonomic handles they’ve been doing it wrong?

>>1983330>>1983349I don't get how citidiots do it. They just literally sit there for minutes trying to open a bag and think that's normal. It's amazing how their brains are conditioned.
