Talk about states, post your rankings:https://mapchart.net/usa.html
Why didn't you post the official map OP?
>>1978997>>1979001>CA that high>VT same as NY>PA that low>midwest lower than fucking RIEvery time this trash gets posted it triggers me. Obvious this list was either made by someone in CA or some Euro going by Instagram posts.
>>1979006CA is a great state for out. You have desert, high mountain, forest trains and everything in between. Just live in the north and don't talk to anyone.
>>1979015CA is the same as NY. Great if you ignore the huge cities.
>>1978997>>1979001Texas has great outdoors, who the fuck makes these
>>1979020Californians who don't even go /out/ in California
>>1978997MI deserves higher due to the UP, or the UP should be ranked separate from the Mitten. Also MN being the same rank as Wisconsin is insulting to the North Shore and the Boundary Waters.
>>1979020Texas has almost no public lands is it's major drawbackbut morons that lack logic make these, look at Tennessee and North Carolina being so disparate despite East Tenn=West NC (literally the same mountain ranges)>>1979006Cali has ocean, deserts, high peaks and old growth forest, main draw back is it's CaliNY has the Adirondacks and the Catskills, and northeast NY is just as forested/remote as VT, frankly if NYC didn't exist it would be the better /out/ statePA has no good summits, no real coastline, and is infested with city slickersthose states are pretty shit in terms if /out/ and RI has the ocean, might be able to bump up Nebraska and Oklahoma but Iowa, Illinois, and Kansas absolutely deserve that ranking.I'd argue SoDak needs to be higher rated, the badlands and black hills are fantastic places to hike and camp and the normies are only passing through so you don't see anybody 5 minutes past a trail head.
corrected version
>>1979042another revision where I bump Arizona upI'm struggling with Maine, I feel the lack of dumbasses from the city compared to NH should bump it up but NH has better mountains, but Maine also has great coast and ass loads of completely uninhabited but it also lacks the eco diversity of the other states it'd be in the tier with. it's a tough question
>>1979042what makes indiana so shit?
>>1979035$12 gets you a pass into all of the fairly unmanaged public land TWPD has that’s not part of the State Parks system. While some of those are really 100% hunting land, many of them are open for primitive camping, fishing, hunting, etc.
>>1979139Hit enter too quickly. Point is, folks complaining about TX lacking public land generally haven’t even spent a damn moment looking for it.
>>1979020No it doesn't. >Hurrr durrrr we can go shoot some boars
>>1979140>>1979139shush i like my wmas empty
Feel like I should be bashing these autists for underrating the flatlands but really don’t want the coast and mountain fags to come here.
>>1979052>I'm struggling with MaineI'd put Maine right up there, because of the coastal estuary ecology. It doesn't have as much of the AT as the inland states, or many famous mountains relative to its size. But the borderland areas where forest, river, marsh, and beach all come together is IMO one of the best /out/ environments in the world. Marsh mud (perfect for washing) and shellfish are readily available, seawater cleans wounds better than anything, lots of comfy and good-smelling cedar and pine, many activities like fishing and birdwatching. Big problem is that any random water may dehydrate you to an unknown degree.FYI, the inter-tidal borderlands are some of the most ecologically diverse niches on earth, which is why most of them are designated conservation areas. Coastal camping never seems to get the same exposure as mountain camping for some reason.
>>1978997this maps sucksWhat was the criteria?I live in Indiana and I am out all the time. 9 Free to use state maintained rifle and archery ranges. >>1979111Wondering this as well (IN native). The southern half of the state, and Pokagon up north are really pretty. I think it's just because nothing is incredibly far from populated towns/cities so it's not considered being "/out/"
>>1979561Is dunes national park worth going to? I grew up in east-central indiana and haven't been back up there since it was just a state park.
>>1978997>IL>Shit tierShawnee National Forest plus Starved Rock, Sand Ridge, South Fork, Marseilles Cliffs, and the many many man-made lakes - particularly Lake Shelbyville should at least put IL as lower tier.

If enough people disagree with this take, I'll adjust AZ.
>>1980599no you dont
>>1978997How can SD be so low. You can be in the badlands, an incredible desert biome, and hike for miles, then drive another 40 minutes and be in incredible mountains in the black hills.

>>1979035>I'd argue SoDak needs to be higher rated, the badlands and black hills are fantastic places to hike and camp and the normies are only passing through so you don't see anybody 5 minutes past a trail head.Same with NoDak. >>1979943is that BWCA? Voyageurs?
>>1980031>dotted with small townsyea the rockies suck. (sarc)
>>1980667>Northern AZ is overbuilt and full of chink touristsCentral AZ is way overbuilt, the only places in northern AZ that are overbuilt are Sedona and Prescott, while the Rim and Show Low have a lot of summer houses that are unoccupied for half the year. AZ district 1 has more land area than the entire state of Florida with less than 800,000 people living in it and it doesn't even include most of Mohave, Yavapai county nor any of Cochise county. The chink and jap tourists do not wander very far from their tour buses and only hang around the south rim of the GC. Pretty much the only things that makes AZ cool is massive climate differences, good gun laws (for now), and the 11.25 million acres of national forest, 7th most in the US. Everything else about the state kind of sucks or is average though.
>>1980132Shhh. Let them think it's shit.

>>1980758Pretty much this. I understand rating AZ lower than states with natural bodies of water if you want that variety, but even without it, there's lots of riparian land and plenty of man-made lakes, so outside of ocean or glacier type of options, it's a small gap that is more than made up for by the density of other astounding features and unique environments.

>>1981553I have a job interview tomorrow on the phone for NV. It looks like an underrated state IMO. I am a geologist and hoping to get the job. They have like 6 types of native trout. The map is wrong. PA is a fantastic /out/ state if you actually enjoy the outdoors. Fags need "muh instagram views" instead of enjoying a different type of scenery.
Illinifag here. The state indeed fucking sucks for out /out/ing; what little natural land still exists is fucking impressive but the boomers decimated the entire state because we the prairies gave us the most fertile soil on the planet. They drained the swamps, ground up the tubers and left less than one onehundredth of one percent of historic prairieland. Places like Apple River canyon, Starved Rock, Garden of the Gods, Illinois Beach state park, and the Midewin National tallgrass prairie are all worth visiting, very unique locals all for their own reasons, but those are basically all the scraps that the boomers left us.The state is so interesting, we're at the confluence of 2 vast rivers, we've been glaciated more than any other state, we have both arctic flowers and cottonmouth snakes, and our prairies were were biodiverse, impenetrably dense and oceanic in spread, and corporate faggots just had to grow their corn here.Nobody else cares about the state but me, and it's my dream to buy up as many failed cornfields as I can and repopulate the land with native scenes.

>>1978997Iowa is tight, just sucks there’s no national parks.
>>1980132I'm from Rolla, but MO is pretty generic for outdoors. The conservation department might be well run but this a thread for states with nice outdoors, not how the bureaucracy runs. MO gets absolutely shit on by most Western states.
>>1980132Let's face it, the fewer mapfags know about the Ozarks, the better.
>>1982164Everything in the east gets shit on by the west, not really the point. Missouri is unquestionably the best of the lower midwest and easily holds its own with the Great Lakes states. The Ozarks is one of only two /out/ oases in the center of the country, the other being the Black Hills much farther north. With multiple national forest districts throughout the bottom 2/3s of the state, endless conservation areas, free-entry state parks, lots of lakes and rivers, relaxed gun laws, low pop density outside the two major cities on the western and eastern borders, low COL, and mild winters, it's a fantastic jack-of-all-trades.That said, none of that should be interpreted as an invitation.

>>1978997One of the reasons the east is rated so poorly on these maps is because the states are much smaller. Imagine if PA+NJ+NY+New England was all one state. That would put it around the size of the larger western states like Montana. Once you match the size fairly, you're left with definitely a much higher tier out state. The whole region is heavily forested, 4 national forests, and a whole bunch of other very large publicly accessible areas (PA wilds, Adirondacks, Maine northwoods and more). On top of that you have a wide array of environments from the great lakes to the Atlantic ocean, there's tons of different mountains and plenty of forest and even unique ecosystems like the NJ pine barrens. So adjust for size and the smaller states of the east don't look too bad
>>1982533>One of the reasons the east is rated so poorly on these maps is because the states are much smallerthat is true, but one other thing the map doesn't take into account are the east (and west) coast's insufferable faggots

Also the ozarks are pretty great besides the fact that the lake is now filled with boomers and new money yuppies. Mark Twain forest is pretty good and the sheer amount of free use conservation areas the Dept has set up is such a bonus compared to other states conservation dept sites and the Ozarks is where I plan to retire deep into the wilderness.

>>1983100not just cook county, if you're ever in the area you should check out the numerous forest preserves and grasslands that dot the area. Waterfall glen, the forests in and around palos, the morton arboretum has tons of fantastic trails that most people don't reach in the back (and it's the best place in the world if you're a botanist). I'm a fan of Busse Woods because that area of the state is bog/fen country with fantastic tamaracks, an enourmous bird population and they're reintroducing elk.

>>1981004What the whole fucking thing?I live 5 minutes from a boat ramp on the rogue, it's cool but always way too crowded. I did have an osprey or something catch a big ass fish(think it was a steelhead) right in front of my raft one time. It was pretty sweet.I've only lived here for 6 years and I do overall like it, it's just a lot more expensive than where I used to live (OK).I'll have to say Oklahoma deserves to at least be up one tier. There's a lot of lakes and deers and bears all over if you are a hunter. Biggest downside is the weather which can be brutally hot or cold and also very wet and sparky, or also very blowy and sucky.

>>1982824>Just look at how many gay little mountain towns and ski resorts pop up, with suburban fucks building mcmansions on every mountainsideYou've described the fate of every mountain state, not just CO
>>1984059I mean as far as central appalachia goes - deep creek lake (ski/resort area) seems solidly middle class - some larger homes - but not exactly all mcmansions - and same with snowshoe ski resort its more middle class canaan valley is publicly owned and downright lower middle class its a comfy vibe altho I don't ski just hike there's way more mcmansions in the exurbs closer to cities than in deep rural country hereI could be wrong but I don't think there's a secret rich part of WV with huge houseswhat happens in the intermountain west and west coast is a bit different than central appalachia
>>1978997>mfw Mississippi But why?
>>1983105Jesus christ that pic
>>1981800fellow illinifag please make it end
>>1981690So then, Colorado is the clear winner. Which in reality actually holds up.
>>1978997How bad is Florida, really? I may be moving to the panhandle soon for work, and was really hoping it would have decent camping.
>>1984567Arizona and the west coast states have much more diverse topography than Colorado>>1981690Arizona and New Mexico are interesting to look at on that map because you can easily pick out four of the most prominent peaks by the small white dots:>Humphreys Peak (N AZ)>Baldy Peak (E AZ)>Mount Taylor (NW NM)>Sierra Blanca Peak (S NM)Those really stand out unlike the Colorado 14ers that are indistinguishable on the map (save Pikes and Blanca). Much more impressive to look at in real life too with how much they dominate their surroundings.
>>1978997Based Canadian reporting in
>>1984646>Much more impressive to look at in real life too with how much they dominate their surroundings.sincerely, this is cope
>>1979006How is ca not that high it's agiant Colorado with beaches, idiot.
>>1978997This isn't an /out/ ranking, this is a hiking ranking. You backpacking bunny huggers wouldn't know /out/ if it bit you in the ass.
>>1984872Hiking is a part of /out/ but I agree it shouldn't be the only consideration. I would be in favor of more specific maps since /out/ covers a wide spectrum of activities.
>>1978997those unmarked I just don't really have an opinion about
>>1984900Fairly accurate, aside you should add MI, KY, WV to greatt.hoosierAlso Fuck FIBs
>>1979899The UP is God's Country, aside the stable flies along Lake Superior.
>>1980438A Lot more people (FIBs) during summer now that it is a National Park. Worth the trip.Indiana Dunes has a greater plant diversity than the entire state of Hawaii.
Alaska would be better if it doesn't drive you suicidal.
>>1984930no more suicidal than say norway or sweden
>>1984900>Indiana No wonder you're so angry. And you do realize this is the outdoors board not the politics one, right?
>>1984967What does hating yuppie faggots have to do with politics? It won't be my state giving out free hrt on public land.
Please do not come to MA
>>1978997NY is definitely upper tier. Upstate NY is gorgeous. The foliage there in autumn cannot be beat.
>>1985190Except by MA, NH, ME, VT, Ontario and Qubec
>>1980175>CA>terrible Fucking kys. CA is not a place you want to live, but it is god tier when it comes to /out/. The landscape there is unlike anywhere else on the planet. It has six national parks for a damn good reason.
>>1985190>>1985191ohio and michigan do it better
>>1981259All of that is true, but none of it has to do with /out/
>>1981787Ask me how I know you have never stepped foot in NY
>>1984900Ehh, I somewhat agree with the burn in hell part, but you could condense that down to 4 cities. The rest of those states are nice
>>1985191Take out ME and those Canadian provinces. The rest are basically the same as NY>>1985201Fucking kys. This statement is flat out wrong
>>1985216new england sucks for consistant fall colors because they don't get large enough temperature swings. Canada is actually better, but the midwest is the best
>>1980999You must not have tried much fishing in Illinois then.
>>1981650>>Living is northwest ArkansasIt's nice I guess but I am surrounded by shit. If I want to see anything besides some hills and a lake it's an 11+ hour drive. FUCK.
>>1984974You're basing your rating of those states on the politics of the people who live there.
>>1979740The OP and Cascades being as good as anything else in NA doesn't excuse the fact that the eastern 2/3 of the state is shitty high desert and/or farmland and that the Puget Sound region is packed with people.
>>1983105California has a huge diversity of climates and terrains, including a large coastline. For perspective to Eurofags, Cali is bigger than Germany despite having 1/3 the population, and it's still our most populous state.
>>1985267>trannys make parks political>me, a concerned hoosier, doesn't want to hear about queer ecology while hikingIf the politics of the "people" who live there starts affecting my ability to enjoy being /out/, then that makes them pinko fucks. That stuff is propaganda no matter which way you look at it.
>>1983105California is /out/ paradise. It has something for everyone. It's hard to understand until you actually visit. Once you leave you'll have "California dreamin'" going through your head every winter.Everyone in this thread hating on it is just coping hard; many have never even stepped foot there, but the state's politics have become a meme in the conservative sphere -- not without reason -- and it's a game on the internet to see who can hate California with the most fervor. In fact, if you can afford to live there -- outside of a major city -- it's truly God's country.t. non-coping midwestfag
>>1980132keep your goddamn mouth shut, faggot
>>1986282Kansasfag detected. It's not our fault you sold off the Flint Hills to boomer ranchers. Deal with your inferiority elsewhere.
>OP says the south sucks>can live off wild piggies and saltwater fish
what fucking retard decided to use these three colors for three different tiers
>>1982056What do you mean? I'm a coloradoian an know how to take care of them.
>>1985705You aren't "hearing" about anything. Just ignore the sign and keep walking. Or better yet, stay in your meth infested shithole.
>>1985705>implying you can read
>>1984974HAHAHAHAH THAT WARNING"punishable by a fine of up to $100,000, one year imprisonment, or both"Fuck off, this is why I hate the LGBT movement.
>>1986513Destroying federal property was illegal before you became aware of gay people too anon.
>>1986514Yeah well they know people will hate it so they have to warn people they can't touch it.
>>1986515You're right they shouldn't have warned anyone and just started slapping retards with 100k fines.
>>1978997How is NY mid tier? We have the catskills AND the adirondacks, plus tonnes of state land where you can fuck off, go shooting, hunt, camp, etc.
>>1986517But then they would keep loosing their sign :(
>>1983122Good opinion. We can all chat about what our states have, but ultimately we can go to any of these states and experience what they have to offer with a car and some time. Imagine living in great britain or some gay shit and what you have is what you got Not only do we have great natural landscapes, but we put a lot of work in to preserve them.
>>1983122>>1986527except RI

>>1980999I grew up here and have been here for 30 years. I've seen other great outdoor places, but to say IL doesn't have a decent share of outdoor stuff is ignorant. If you're in Chicagoland, I could see it. We have the best deer hunting in the midwest, maybe even the country. Fishing is debatable.>Illinoisans are up there with Californians and Texans, absolutely dismantling the culture hereThe only ones from IL dismantling your culture are Chicagoans.>>1981800Based. IL prairie is beautiful for what's left of it. There used to be a beautiful clearing with a small hill and a single tree on top of it surrounded by woods you could see from Route 48 just outside Palmer. Someone decided to farm it and now it is no longer beautiful.

>>1978997Ohio isnt that bad, the southeast is fairly mountainous. its not an entirely flat hellscape like people think.
>>1987523Any recommendations for nice comfy trails in SE ohio?
>>1987513I've only been to SWFL and stayed there for a few months but I liked how it seemed like it was almost a universal truth that everyone liked fishing.
Friendly reminder that if AK, HI, WA, OR, CA, MT, ID, WY, NV, UT, CO, AZ and NM (not necessarily in that order) are not your top 13, your opinion is wrong.

What the fuck is the difference between top and high tier, they're the exact same shade of green and I'm 99.98% certain I'm not colorblind.

>>1987879Bro, are you serious? I’ve got some bad news. Those colors really are different. No joke, he has four states as high tier and four as top tier. Maybe you can download the image into a program that lets you view the color palate.
