Thinking about getting my first knife soon. Torn between a Ontario RAT 5 and ESSE 5. The esse seems damn near indestructible but it's about a pound or so. The RAT 5 seems to be lighter and has a nice grip. Any owners of either have any input? I'm just looking for something for everyday carry and use in camping.

These are mine, They're all from Knives of Alaska (made in Texas) in D2 I changed the grinds on the caping knife and the camp knife from saber grinds to a flat convex on the caping knife and a flatter saber grind on the camp knife and removed the ricasso on both of them. I like the entire edge to be useable. I also added some jimping on the thumb rams on the caping knife and the camp knife.I rounded and smoothed the corners on the rubberized handles to remove hotspots on all of them but the elk hunter knife, that one had a guard extending from the tang that I removed to use it in a reverse grip easier. In hindsight I could have just got the Alpha Wolf which has the same blade but without the guard. The D2 steel had held up well over the years and survived me being rough with them at times. Having these, using them and altering them has allowed me to learn what I want in a knife and I'm quite happy with them now, but I can't help but admiring all the cool knives I see on the board. These aren't that pretty but they're very useable. The knife I've had my eye on for a while now is a belt knife made by William Collins, called the Woodsman's Belt Knife or WBK. It's like a big thick survival knife, a chef knife and a Mora kansbol had a baby in AEBL. I don't need it, but damn I WANT IT. Some years ago I bought a cheap chinese knife to get kind of get started on whitling. I did such a shit job that I actually blunted it on its first use.I tried to sharpen it a couple of times, of every attempt ended with a still blunt edge.I know I'm essentially just bitching at my own incompetence, but how the fuck can I not sharpen it when all it should take is grinding it at the same angle on both sides?I usually use a handheld diamond file, but it has never given me acceptable results. The only time I actually got a decently sharp edge was with a dollar store whetstone with a stabbing motion.What am I doing wrong? Help a retard out.

>>1983767You were probably getting a burr on the edge, which is like a little flap of feathered metal on the edge that folds over when you try to cut things, and ends up making the freshly sharpened knife feel like it has a round edge.You can avoid it by using a hyper-aggressive grit stone and leaving the edge extremely rough like a mini serrated blade. The downside of this is you'll get dull quickly and have to sharpen more often. Or, what you should do is 'hone' or polish the edge to remove the burr. Honing in particular, and sharpening in general is a learned skill that takes practice and time. This is the downside of honing. Getting rid of burrs causes a lot of people problems and there is a lot of material on YouTube about how to fix it.
