>>1977936dunno what knife it is besides a kabar 4" folding hunter's knife with 2 blades. I found it rusty in the basement, remember it being my late dad's, and restored it. one time I looked it up and saw it sold for $35 in the 90s/00s, which is about $60 today.pic related. pitting on the blades isn't bad considering it was literally too rusty to open. filled some bad pitting in the spine with epoxy.

>>1978054I did not regrind
>>1978076The flat grind and blade shape are perfect imo, I like knives that can do woodsy stuff & double duty as chef knives, and that one looks like it'll rock, chop & slice nicely with that grind.

>>1978145np. check out japanese sword polishing, which is its own specialized profession:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_sword_polishingsandpaper on metal is a bad idea, unless already know that you need sandpaper to accomplish the task. eg:>roughing up a face for epoxy application>smoothing out burrs in machinery with mineral oil + high gritalso, if you're gonna replace the handle anyway, try this:>clean with steel wool/Blue Magic>rough up with a file>heat the tang with a small blowtorch>apply warm-ish solid beeswax to the tang>the metal needs to be hot enough that it can melt the wax>molten wax applied to cold metal will not work>when cold, buff out excess wax with a towelthis will give it a grippy, water-resistant layer that encourages the formation of beneficial oxides and inhibits rust.beeswax wears off easily so you may want to re-coat the tang once a year until it forms an even layer of blackness that's intrinsic to the metal, i.e., scrubbing it with a soapy nylon brush won't make it any brighter.for the handle, just wipe it down with a mineral oil saturated cloth after you do your business
>>1978583>for the handle, just wipe it down with a mineral oil saturated cloth after you do your businessfor the blade *>>1978582i'm talking more general knife maintenance. that guy's knife doesn't look worth the effort unless sentimental, partly because already sanded.full tang, made in USA, new handle and sheath. could be an excellent knife. dunno your knife usage but mine is 90% delicate tasks and carrying a shit $5 machete if needed.
>>1978565Yes. It's a cleaning/skinning/caping knife, so it is designed for very specific /out/ tasks. It won't excel at wood, but will do the job.

>>1978586>90% delicate tasks and carrying a shit $5 machete if needed.Okay, nvm about what I said. I see a lot of people go high on the grit for their outdoor knife, then they're surprised when the edge chips so easy when its put through any sort of abuse.
Thinking about getting my first knife soon. Torn between a Ontario RAT 5 and ESSE 5. The esse seems damn near indestructible but it's about a pound or so. The RAT 5 seems to be lighter and has a nice grip. Any owners of either have any input? I'm just looking for something for everyday carry and use in camping.
>>1978694Do you need a knife designed to cut through an airplane fuselage? No? Get a normal knife
>>1978705Such as?
>>1978694Get an esee 4 instead of a 5. Them and the rats are probably about equal but the esee is better if you give it tkc scales and an armitus sheath.
>>1978694Fallkniven S1 or F1.
>>1978694I'd get at least a 6" incher with a Full Flat grind, you want it big enough to be able to at least chop & slice potatoes.I'd go with the RAT 7 for a camp knife, for EDC/city-fagging stick to a folder like the RAT II in D2.
>>1978099Exactly what I look for in a knife as well. I edc izula variants. This has the exact same geometry, it just keeps coming back, getting twice as thick. A kitchen knife you can cut a tree down with
>>1978694For EDC, /out/, or collecting?Over the years, I keep going smaller and smaller for EDC knives. A razor blade is nearly as useful as a 6”+ blade when it comes to EDC shit where you mostly need to open packages and shit. The Esee Izula is great on the belt, the 3 looks pretty sweet as well, and I wouldn’t mind the babby Candiru most days.

>>1983478>>1983500The Kizer is a damn heavy blade if that's what ya want
>>1979520Look at what CRKT did with the SPEW, it’s that little knot of cordage at the end that ends up the pinkie, it feels better than you would expect.I wouldn’t mind the short handle on the Candiru. I have big hands so the Izula is 3 fingers for me anyway.
These are mine, They're all from Knives of Alaska (made in Texas) in D2 I changed the grinds on the caping knife and the camp knife from saber grinds to a flat convex on the caping knife and a flatter saber grind on the camp knife and removed the ricasso on both of them. I like the entire edge to be useable. I also added some jimping on the thumb rams on the caping knife and the camp knife.I rounded and smoothed the corners on the rubberized handles to remove hotspots on all of them but the elk hunter knife, that one had a guard extending from the tang that I removed to use it in a reverse grip easier. In hindsight I could have just got the Alpha Wolf which has the same blade but without the guard. The D2 steel had held up well over the years and survived me being rough with them at times. Having these, using them and altering them has allowed me to learn what I want in a knife and I'm quite happy with them now, but I can't help but admiring all the cool knives I see on the board. These aren't that pretty but they're very useable. The knife I've had my eye on for a while now is a belt knife made by William Collins, called the Woodsman's Belt Knife or WBK. It's like a big thick survival knife, a chef knife and a Mora kansbol had a baby in AEBL. I don't need it, but damn I WANT IT. Thick where I want it thick, thin where I want it thin, slicy and comfy-grippy coke bottle scales. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZZlXCY_1ac

Some years ago I bought a cheap chinese knife to get kind of get started on whitling. I did such a shit job that I actually blunted it on its first use.I tried to sharpen it a couple of times, of every attempt ended with a still blunt edge.I know I'm essentially just bitching at my own incompetence, but how the fuck can I not sharpen it when all it should take is grinding it at the same angle on both sides?I usually use a handheld diamond file, but it has never given me acceptable results. The only time I actually got a decently sharp edge was with a dollar store whetstone with a stabbing motion. What am I doing wrong? Help a retard out.

>>1983334First sheath I used too thin leather and it came out awfully and I've been too nervous to try again, because the wet environment of the leather is bad for the blade. I have a squirrel pelt and might try making it out of that without doing a wet forming. Could be fun.
>>1983793Even if you want to incorrectly argue that Buck knives are better. Buck sheaths are absolute trash.
a good knife for small game like squirrel and pigeons? wouldnt mind a folder but not a requirementi use an Opinel now and the pivot is wearing out and its hard to clean, sharp tho
What's a good heavy duty knife that can function as an all-in-one tool for fire prep with minimal risk of it breaking?
>>1983767You were probably getting a burr on the edge, which is like a little flap of feathered metal on the edge that folds over when you try to cut things, and ends up making the freshly sharpened knife feel like it has a round edge. You can avoid it by using a hyper-aggressive grit stone and leaving the edge extremely rough like a mini serrated blade. The downside of this is you'll get dull quickly and have to sharpen more often. Or, what you should do is 'hone' or polish the edge to remove the burr. Honing in particular, and sharpening in general is a learned skill that takes practice and time. This is the downside of honing. Getting rid of burrs causes a lot of people problems and there is a lot of material on YouTube about how to fix it.
>>1983852Look for a 'bird and trout' knife. They are designed for cleaning small game.Grohmann #2 in full-flat grindis what I'd recommend.
>>1983693It's pretty good, works well as a cleaver and skinner and works ok as a small hatchet, the spine on it is 1/4 inch so it's decent for splitting kindling. The hole on the shaft is actually pretty handy for breaking sticks into hobo-stove sized chunks. So yeah, it's good.
