Trash thread.
Anyways, there are machines for several different purposes. Only spend big if you know you will use the machine fully and for a long time.
>trapping and off trail use
get a wide track and carry a rope winch and shovel. Four strokes and efi highly recommended so you don't get stranded.
>recreational trail use
anything works for this, but lighter sleds are more fun and easier to unstuck. Carry a shovel
>transportation/hauling
four stroke efi is quiet reliable, and has a wider power band for hauling. A low gear and reverse is needed for a lot of hauling. Wide track if you want to do a lot of hauling. Also consider the heavier the sled, the more tractive effort you have on the trailer, but the harder it is to get unstuck. Carry a rope winch and shovel. Heavier sleds also have a nicer ride quality.
>deep snow and mountain
I dont have much experience with this, but you want a light sled with a lot of power and big lugs/ a long track. Ride with friends.
In any case, you need to detail where and what type of riding you will do.
Also, talk to a dealer/salesman. They know what people buy for what purposes, have experience themselves, and often sell used machines at a small premium over craigslist.

I'll need it for work this winter. I've used plenty of sleds before but since Ill be using it almost every day whats the most reliable? I've heard to stay away from anything early 2000's but I found an '08 4 stroke ski-doo w/ trailer for 2,500. I've used a lot of 2018ish polaris's and it seems their engines need to be rebuilt every year despite being almost brand new but maybe the warranty alone would be worth buying new.

Skidoo Tundra known one Canada as the mechanical snowshoe. Built for backwoods travel. Best power to weight ratio of any sled out there. They come in several different engine sizes 600 cc is pretty decent my work has 3 of them

Well shoot, you probably know more about these machines than me then. I do know to steer clear of polaris four strokes. Even polaris knows they can't handle it and iirc stopped making them. I use a 2020 skidoo four stroke, and the biggest downside I have heard about is that you cannot pull start them if the battery dies. I have cold started mine daily down to -35f and never had an issue, so just make sure you have a good battery with a four stroke and dont let it sit for a month in the cold. I haven't heard anything good for polaris reliability either, and no one in my area uses them. If that skidoo is in good shape and is the right type, it sounds like a bargain, even more so if it is EFI. Carbs problems have been more of an issue in my engines than all other issues combined.
