>getting your lip pierced is worse than death
So you're supposed to kill every fish you caught including baby/youth fish and trash fish?
>>
>>1806698
not necessarily, sometimes that happens when you start winding in and there's little tension in the line, you gonna have to cast or take enough line to get to that point to find out.
>>
>>1806698
Yeah. I would fill it up just to the edge of the gold rim.
But if your spool is quite deep and you aren't targeting species that will pull drag like crazy then you should be fine for line capacity. Less line on your spool means that your spool weight is lighter and it may help with casting lighter lures.
>>
>>1806686
I've found that St. Croix is massively overrated. Granted I've only seen the lower end of it, but I'm a much bigger fan of my fenwick rods. My buddies triumph fucking sucks ass, although he really put too big of a reel on it so that may play a role. I have their ice rods and I'm not too impressed. I'm not willing to overlook the whole brand yet, but I have yet to be impressed by it to say the least. Dollar for dollar.

I love this. Pike are way more fun to catch than bass, they get way bigger and fight much harder. If they did the aerial jumps bass did it wouldn't even be a discussion

Nah. It’s fine. I always push too far on my spool due to greed since I want to not having to respool when I have to cut off some line. I end up unable to remove the spool when I need to because the line can’t fit through the frame

What's your fishing technique?

I only do trout fishing. I use an ultra-light rod with 4lb fluorocarbon line, a 1/16th oz egg sinker (so it can move freely and not affect the sensitivity), a swivel, about 2 feet of line, a salmon egg hook w/ 1 or 2 eggs perpendicular to the line tied with a palomer knot, then another 2 feet or so of line with a treble hook and some power bait on the end of it. Line > Egg Sinker > Swivel > Line > Salmon Hook w/ Egg > Line > Treble Hook w/ Powerbait. The purpose of this setup is to have the treble hook with powerbait float on the surface of the floor and avoid any snags and the salmon hook 2 feet above to avoid any weeds or rocks. No need for bobbers or and playing with the weight allows you do adjust the setup for any depth. For this setup I bait and wait.

My other setup uses the same rod, reel, and line, but with a swivel, 3 feet of line, and then a 1/4 to 1/8th oz spinning lure. Usually Panther Martin, but sometimes Mepps, Rooster Tail, or Kastmaster. Reel it in slowly and if it's a good lure it'll do everything for you.

Because of the ultra-light setup you have to tire the fish out a bit so you don't snap anything. When you get a bite hold the rod parallel to the line going to the water to avoid strain on the rod (by excessive bending) or on the line (by having it rub against the eye holes.) Let some line out and gently reel it back in and repeat a few times. I've caught an multiple 10+lb trout this way with 4lb test and a 1-6 lb rod.

Why ultra-light? Because it's more fun and you have the occasional boomer getting buttblasted that you caught the biggest fish of the day with 4lb test.

What do you think? What do you do? I'd like to try out freshwater bass fishing if anyone has some advice. Inb4 reddit spacing.

>>
>>1806867

i lean towards the lighter end for tackle

i don't see the point of 50+ lb braid with lip ripping hooksets. if i was fishing total slop, maybe but still
>>
>>1806847
That's mostly an ice thing up here. It comes to the difference in water access. You guys seem to mostly be bank fishing from a few spots, whereas most serious American fishing involves a boat and searching a very large area, deadbaiting would require driving the boat out to a known good spot, anchoring, and sitting and waiting in the boat which just as an entertainment proposition doesn't strike most people
>>
>>1806867
>>1806854
I put a lure on 20lb mono and throw it in the water. Anything beyond sticking a lure on line with a simple clinch and putting it in water is too complicated and isn't worth the effort.

It works though.
>>
>>1806867
In the summer (and hopefully more in the fall this year) I've been focusing on muskie. 8' casting with 80# PPv2. Mostly bucktails.

Late fall/early winter I switch to steelhead, 10'6" spinning, considering a longer rod and a centerpin. Mostly drifting sacs, beads, etc but every so often I'll use a spinner and either my MH baitcaster in big water or in skinny water my 5'UL with 6# and that is successful often.
Winter ice fishing, mostly panfish and bass ponds, along with perch and an occasional trout outing.
Then early spring steelhead again, and then late spring until muskie opener I use my 7' M F rod with 15# braid or 8# mono for smallmouth bass. It's a pretty good life if I'm being honest.

A good sized stick that I found on the ground and stripped of bark. Be sure you aim properly and use enough force. If one bonk isn't enough you're either doing it wrong or you're just a limp wristed faggot.

Usually I just cut the spine in one quick sliding motion and the fish no go flop no more. Make sure you have a sharp knife so it's instantaneous and the fish doesn't suffer.
>>
>>1806825
>hate the handle design
Exactly. I've never seen any issue with sensitivity, but the handles are uncomfortable. In most applications extreme sensitivity isn't vital, however being comfortable with a rod is. That's why I like my fenwick, balances well and the handle isn't too long or too short, and the power grip is excellent.

It's really only the main line and a leader with some extra shit added on, pretty simple to setup as long as you know palomer and fisherman knots. I've had a lot better success with it compared to a standard hook and bait setup for trout. For spinning lures a lightweight swivel prevents line twist which saves you a lot of effort down the line.

>>1806916
Ahh, I don't have experience with those so you're probably right. I've heard that bass are pretty stupid and will go after anything.

Bass and catfish are mostly location. Find good coves on google maps and know when/where they hunt. I use an ugly stick with a spinning reel, but honestly if you know when bass are hungry and where they'll be you can throw almost anything with a hook in and pull them up. Catfish are similar.

I don't honestly think I've ever caught a trout. Wouldn't know what I'm missing.

Sorry if this posts multiple times, 4chan is being weird and my posts aren't posting with this pic.
>>
>>1806926
To add to this, I've seen many people skunk out with great setups because they don't know where to fish at what times of day. This includes depth. Most people I've seen skunk lately get to the lake at 4am and sit there all day, while I roll in around noon, get my boat out, watch bass boil near coves and pull one up almost every cast. Sometimes I can't even set the line before I get a bite. Then I'll roll out with 5-6 fish (a full cooler) and multiple releases at 2-3pm while they sit there with their expensive setups watching me leave.
>>
>>1806932
I love dabbing on casuals like that. Me in my shitty canoe actually catching fish hearing people go by in 10k plus boats complain about how they "must be spawning or sumptin!"
>>
>>1806878
I don't see why you couldn't just do it from the bank though. Just because the lake is bigger doesn't mean the pike won't be able to sniff out the bait.
>>
>>1806937
For me it isn't about dabbing on anyone, it's just that some people don't research the right fishing tips. Knowing how to tie a knot or special setup, or set a hook, or use X method only does so much. Location and timing are the key.

Catfish are just fat asses.

>American fishing involves a boat and searching a very large area, deadbaiting would require driving the boat out to a known good spot, anchoring, and sitting and waiting in the boat
Literally the American dream
>>
Are baitcasters primarily for boat use?
>>
>>1806962
They're primarily a meme.
>>
>>1806965
Ok. Sure, but... is there any use for it other than on a boat throwing swim bait or throwing top water from the bank?
>>
>>1806984
bait casters are better options to fish certain types of lures. They're also more accurate because you're able to control your casts with your thumb. They can also cast farther in some cases.

So no, they are not primarily for boat use.
>>
>>1806993
So it’s totally worth investing $200 on a setup. Running the banks on foot throwing into ponds. I’m happy with my spinning setup but I would love to do some finesse fishing but also throw some larger lures and top water frogs. Which my current setup isn’t really geared for that.

There is no reason it wouldn't work, and like I said people know it's an option, since it's how most Ice fishing for pike is done. I think most Americans favor the active hunting style of lure fishing and have the types of environment where they can do it, whereas most UK residents don't have the option, so your culture focused on what it could do that worked. You also need to remember that fishing is a huge commercial interest in the states with billions of dollars in product sold, and a lot of marketing went into all the nice shelf stable lures North Americans love to buy. It's much harder to market a 3-0 treble hook with a frozen sardine on it
>>
Why the fuck have I never caught anything when fishing at night?

I know, an acquaintance of mine caught a 20#er at willow recently. Are you going weekends or week days? I typically fish Mon-Fri and avoid saturday/sunday like the plague. Friday I roll off the lake by 3:30 as a the morons are getting off work and watch boat after boat in tow zoom by towards the lake as I drive home.

Main reason I won't fish willow is the fact there's 500+ people fishing there a week. My advice, find a kayak or jon boat for cheap and fish the coves away from docks. Find some really green ones that are hard to hike to where fish feel safe.
>>

Same guy, that's ironic! Tell you what, a second seat will easy fit on this boat, it scoots around the lake really well. Firstly, fish will be more active near sunset and during the night. Also if you are using anything larger than a #4 hook you wont catch panfish, so if you want to catch some bluegills or whatever you got I suggest a size 8 j hook. Also put on some 6lb line, the lighter the better, it will handle small fish dont worry. For bass, fish near the shore where any irregularities occur and start by using a smaller fineness type lure and once you're done catching dinks you'll want to go bigger.

Imo, if you're new to bass fishing, you can't go wrong with plastic worms. Learn to texas rig and drop shot before you try to dive into crank or topwater. You really can't go wrong with a wacky worm or a texas rig. I mostly bank fish and i used to carry a bunch of shit with me until I learned that you really only need a few hooks, a bullet sinker and some yum dingers.

>There's a lot here to take in.
no actually, there really isn't. here's how I learned to fish...

Step 1 if you don't already know, learn how to tie a basic fishing knot and set up a basic bait rig with a bobber and splitshot sinker. this is how you want to start off because a worm is guaranteed to catch you a fish 90% of the time which is what you want to happen in order to build some confidence and enjoyment out of the whole ordeal.

Step 2 buy some basic lures, I suggest buying a couple Rooster Tail spinners (1/16th oz), black/silver is my favorite. I would also suggest getting some jighead hooks and rigging them with creature plastics, tube baits work phenomenal. go for natural colors like green or black. These lures will catch you fish if you stay persistent and give it some time.

Step 3, watch youtube videos of people fishing to see how they cast and retrieve fish. don't watch the dumbfuck celebrity fishing channels like Jon B, that shit is for retards

Step 4 if all else fails, ask the locals wherever you go fishing what they use and then go buy it at the nearest bait/tackle shop, I've caught my biggest fish by doing this in areas where I have no idea what im doing
>>
>>1808848
Excellent choice on the yum grub friend.

>>1807962
Cap keeps your head from overheating.
Sunglasses provide additional eye protection.
I've spent the whole day at the pier wearing a cap but no glasses. When I got home I saw my eyes were red as fuck.
>>
>>1808864
Thanks. Step 1 makes sense to me because that's what I did when I was a kid. Step 2 is where I start getting confused.
How important is the rod? I'm pretty sure the one sitting in my garage is a complete piece of crap. I'm willing to upgrade, but obviously I don't think I need something expensive. Honestly I was watching people kayak fishing when I was looking at kayaks to buyand they literally had like 6 rods with them. Seems like bullshit.
>>
>>1808874
My advice would be to go to walmart and pick out a new rod+reel combo that you like. get a lightweight one with 6lb mono line. no need to buy a giant stovepipe rod, those are gimmicks for the most part. you can also get the other lures i mentioned there.

Honestly, you're gonna spend so little of your career in illinois that i'd just get some cheap medium tackle from the NEX and throw it away or pawn it off before you go to your fleet destination and can into saltwater fishing. Also, make sure you get your TSP set up ASAP. Concentrate on C and S fund, with a little I fund. Also, if you end up in a state without income tax, get a driver's license for that state and declare residency there. Lessens the amount of taxes you have to pay and you can keep that residency for the duration of your career, so if you get pcs'd to florida first, declare residency, then get pcs'd to california, you'll be considered a florida resident and not have to pay any income taxes. Try to get a ship with no more than about 300 crew. Especially not a carrier or amphib. Smallboys and cruisers would be best. Don't know much about the LCS's desu. Have fun, shipmate.

They get bit when nothing else does. It's definitely my confidence bait. A couple things that helped me out
1.) Light jigs, 1/8 oz should be your heaviest one. I usually use 1/16th-1/10th. Too heavy and it ruins the action
2.) Do nothing, they've got a good natural fall
3.) Try trd ticklerz, shadZ, or some if the other TRD, but I've found that zman TRD is the only brand that has a good ned rig plastic now.
4.) Coppertruce is the best color ever.
5.) FISH IT TEDIOUSLY SLOW!!
6.) Use light (10 lb braid) line and a ML rod. I use my Medium rod but I've pulled the hook out a lot on hooksets. Compensate with drag if you have a M, but you'll get way better casting distance with a ML anyway.

Oh yeah, and never, ever, ever even touch a military girl. I'm pretty sure actual prostitutes have a lower body count and less issues than some of these girls and you don't want to end up with 20 other dude's STD's and all the liability coming down on you when command needs to crucify people for fraternization. Honestly, get a waifu and stick with her until you're out or you find a civilian girl who isn't a fucking parasite dependa. BAH is never worth that.

Why not kill it and use it as bait at the very least? Or perhaps pet food?

I believe they are technically made for salmon, for a simple man like me, used to ABU dropped spinners, this is a kind of quality I've never experienced, feel I could run it over with my bike no problem, its 32 gram butfeels like a 12 gram spinner but just flies like a rocket. can't wait to loose it in a tree or something stupid

It gets shilled hard here and I'm going to fall for the Shimano meme but I'm a cheapskate to the max. I found Shimano SLX150 SLX Reel for around $80-90. Is it worth it, or are there better suggestions for a baitcaster around $100 from either Shimano or Daiwa?
>>
>>1809273
Is that a Shimano twin power? If so, how you like it?
>>
>>1809557
DO NOT BUY THAT. I just bought my friend a SLX combo for him for $140 at American Legacy. Sign up for their newsletter and use the 10% off and get it for $126. You get a SLX rod and SLX reel for $100 off basically. If you want the SLX, and you should because they’re really nice combos for the price, I highly suggest that.
>>
>>1809563
I dont really need the rod. I got into rod building and my wife has used baitcasters her entire life. I just build her a new MHX 7' light-med action rod. I need a reel for it. I was going to get another abu black maxx but decided to give her something better.
>>
>>1809557
Slx is good
>>
>>1809557
get any ABU Garcia
>>
Is this even worth the trouble? Should I just get a 100 dollar rod instead? Anyone have any suggestions? I'm looking to travel light

Try it without the O-Rings and if you decide you like the wacky rig get the tool. It will make your worms last so much longer than without.

>>
>>1809591

>>
>>1809571
Idk man, for $40 more you get a $100 rod, seems like a good deal to me, but if you really don't need, get the SLX. It's a nice reel.
>>
>>1809558
It's the tp 3000fd

I don't know, it feels pretty smooth, but then again, all reels I've reeled have felt smooth, even the $30 shakespeare contender I've been using for the past month feels smooth, I'm going to a bait and tackle shop this thursday to put line on it, then I'll go test it out.

Do I have to take the rod and reel inside to get it spooled, or can I just take the reel?
>>
>>1809598
Reel only, tbqh it's not hard to do yourself but if the tackle shop is going to do it for you, might as well. Twinpower is a nice reel, you bought good. When fighting a large fish, you'll see, that's when shimano's really shine, under load. Still buttery smooth with a buttery smooth drag under extreme tension.
>>
>>1809062
Yum dingers (or Senkos if you aren't cheap like me) are a good place to start. Get a bag each of watermelon red (clear water), green pumpkin(stained water or overcast), and junebug(muddy water or heavy overcast). If the area is rather weedy throw it weightless Texas rigged, otherwise I prefer wacky style. Chuck it where you think the fish are hiding, let it sink, lift your rod to pull it off bottom and repeat. Trick is to give it enough slack to let it fall naturally but not so much that you can't detect bites. Most bites are subtle, watch your line closely.
>>
>>1809288
Any advice on weedy water? I mostly pond fish and with every cast I wind up with a pile of muck on the end of my line.
>>
my 4lb sunline super natural mono just came in today, but I don't know if I want to put it on my UL spinning reel or not. It's currently spooled with 4lb nanofil which, combo'd with fluoro leader is much better. but i also having to use leaders is fucking annoying. aaah can't make up my mind. was also thinking of putting it on an ice fishing reel and use it as line carrier for a jiggin pole
>>
>>1809632
Leaders are easy, practice your joining knot of choice until it's automatic, and try actually fishing instead of changing lures every 5 minutes, your leader will last longer.
>>

my tackle box is slowly being reduced to nothing but jig heads, tube baits, and rooster tails. the nice thing about fishing a lot is that you build confidence in lures that work well for you instead of having a giant clueless box full of bullshit that you bought because it looked pretty and shiny.
>>
>>1809840
i'm having the opposite problem

Everything I buy just fucking works and my tackle box is a giant fucking mess of shiny bullshit

...though I have to attribute this to mostly fishing private ponds with little pressure and bass that would strike a dog turd if I bothered to tie one on

I was told something to the effect of because the knot is below the eye with the line running through it, when the line is pulled tight it pulls the hook at an angle rather than pulling straight up on it, which means you don't have to yoink to set the hook, you just begin reeling. or possible the fish can set the hook on themselves by swimming away.

i really don't fucking know thought thats just what an old man told me. I never use them myself because I'm a smoothbrained bass fisherman
