Cops have only asked me for my license and insurance. They ask you for your insurance because even though you give them the information when you register the vehicle, you could have had your policy cancelled at any time between that and the cops pulling you over. They can look up the registration information directly from your plate number, and after that they can match the description of the vehicle to what they are looking at, or they can run the VIN if they are suspicious. I think the "license and registration, please" is mostly from old tv shows, or maybe because tv is mostly made in one of two states that are notorious for red tape and punitive fines.
