I'm a sucker for any S-Class, but older ones aside I can see the W221 aging very gracefully. The sharper lines look modern even compared to newer cars, and it's not until you put it next to a frumpier looking newer S-Class that you realize it's an older model that dates back to the mid-'00s. Picrel is a facelift of that '05 design but even that is still nearly 15 years old at this point.

oh fuck yeah, the W221 still looks brand new. the average person would probably think it's brand new.

The E65 Generation was a very interesting and unique design that was way ahead of its time. As you stated, when compared to the E38, people would say it is ugly since it is a giant leap from its predecessor. The pre-facelift model itself is unique and actually looks good and is still better than the garbage that BMW is producing today.

I personally think that the E65 (Pre-LCI and LCI) are special and are the most successful BMW 7 series given how many were produced, sold and remain on the road today despite their problems.

I own a 750iL E38 and a 745Li E66 and both cars are unique in their own way.

>>26666159
The E65 LCI B7 is arguably the best looking E65 and is the most powerful. Alpina really did a great job at making a one-of-a-kind car with the B7.

It's definitely unpopular but I tend to agree. Both in design and tech it was ahead of it's time, and made the comparable W220 S-Class seem old school in comparison. Even the features like the electronic column shifter, push to start, iDrive and so on would later get copied by Mercedes, instead of the other way around like it typically had been.
It helps it's case that the newest ones have been quickly becoming pretty damn ugly, too.

Imo it is slightly too period specific in it's design language, specifically the headlights and taillights, the body is fairly neutral. The fiata will likely fare better in the long run. Again just my two cents as a guy who took random industrial and car design courses in college.

It's market forces. Women don't buy cars, they buy features. (And men buy a pathetically small number of cars if you don't count the cars bought for or to appease wives.) Hyping up a big screen and focusing all the interior on it works to get attention. Plus, running shit through the infotainment instead of giving it a real button or its own display saves money.

E65s are more common and have held their value better because unlike w220 the e65 doesn’t rust and doesn’t have that weak garbage airmatic
The only thing that’s more reliable in the w220 are v8 engines

True, I never see any of the 00s and beyond BMWs with rust but Mercedes from the 00s tend to have a lot of rust examples.

I was a tech at a BMW dealership when the e65 came out. They were absolute garbage from the very beginning, and have proven to be terrible cars in the long term. There's a good reason you can find them for so cheap.

E65s are dirt cheap for a reason, they are beyond shitty. Perhaps the worst car BMW ever built.

I want to agree, but I think it only really ages well because of how unremarkable the styling is. There's nothing that's a huge tell of the era besides the boxy shape.

And the Audi does not? Audi have not really made a good car since the Quattro of the 1980s and 90s. If you posted a TT, I would understand, but this? It looks like an elongated and overly glorified Beetle.

Do not get me wrong it looks nice, but I feel the back could have been extended slightly, then it would have looked perfect.
>>
>>26676428
>the back could have been extended slightly
I think it's one of the best proportioned "modern" cars ever made. I also believe that any alteration to the design of it would just ruine it because it wouldn't look "right" anymore. It also feels like it doesn't suffer from the " retro bait" look of some of the mercs, minis, nissans, jags, bimmers and alpines posted itt which always look "off" after a few years.
>>
>>26676517
Fair enough. I always thought the CL class looked better, though I know how some anons feel about MB cars.
