Job: IT
Age when I bought it:

Bought my CRX at 24. Was a dream car because I used to go to dyno day with my dad when they still had it at King motorsports and always wanted to build a turbo honda with him
Bought a 2nd gen CRX at 25. Thought it was a dream car. Turns out I didn't care for it as much as my first gen so I sold it.
Bought my Supra at 26. Was a dream car because I thought the Mk2 supra looked really cool. Wanted a car to put a 2jz into
Bought a 300zx at 26. Again thought it was a dream car but didn't really care for it
Bought my STi at 26. Dream car in the sense of never buying a brand new car before.
Bought my GTR at 29. Dream car since high school

I have been extremely blessed

I realized cars were just going to get further and further from what I wanted and all of the 90's JDM cars were getting too expensive and too hard to get parts for to be worth the trouble. The Corvette was always the benchmark to beat with a JDM car anyway, so why not just buy the benchmark?

no previous owner did a 5spd swap with 4.11 fd, i had it refreshed (new synchros/bearings) and did a rs 5th + stock 4.4 fd so now it literally has honda b16/type r gearing in a 3200lb/420whp awd car...i regret the rs 5th im spinning 3800rpms @ 70mph

it had a buschur 3586r kit w/log manifold + a bunch of ricer bullshit like 2 turbo timers, greddy ebcs, meth injection kit, viper alarm, aftermarket HIDs on top of factory hids, sound system, etc all from 2007-2009 that i ripped out and patched the harness for

the 6 speed is kinda shit man ben @ gears and gasoline ripped one up despite having TRE do literally everything to keep it alive...hell even the 5spds have service intervals of 30k miles (after which they show wear on the input shaft bearings) and are only rated for 380 ft-lbs according to mitsu (jon @ tre will literally sperg out if you tell him you're going past 600whp on one and tell you to buy a gtr/turbo ls which he's not wrong considering it's kept him in business)

>>25613411
if you work for a airline: no you'll be slave labor unless you become a union mechanic

if you work for a public state agency like me: literal dream job, i get 4-7 weeks of time off a year (3 weeks vacation 1 week pto up to 4 weeks of OT banked as pto) + pension + $20-30 copays for medical/dental/vision. my pay scale is $23/hr starting, $38/hr after 8-9 years, but that's also in a very high COL area

for me its entirely facilities maintenance you'd unironically be overqualified most of my coworkers are ex-tradies who left the private sector for stability (concreters/pavers, roofers/framers, carpenters, painters, etc)

you are overqualified and should consider a consulting role
>>

>the 6 speed is kinda shit man
yeah im aware of all of its issues, but i dont care about power, i just want an evo 8/9 mr to do minor bolt ons, get 350awhp, and drive every day.

>it literally has honda b16/type r gearing in a 3200lb/420whp awd car...i regret the rs 5th im spinning 3800rpms @ 70mph
this is exactly what i wouldnt want in a daily evo.

the rest is cool though. buschur stuff is nice.

I work for a small privately-owned Part 135 airline. 26 aircraft, No Union, laid back atmosphere, very non-corporate culture.

I can't hire mechanics without an A&P license. I get tons of applications, and my answer is always the same no matter what your experience is. "Come back after you get your A&P". The starting pay I offer for inexperienced new mechanics is $28/hr.
Not the worst, not the best.

honestly then look for a 6 speed just understand that any little thing will break it, they really don't tolerate heat for example even at that power level.

look at the white evo ben @ gears and gasoline has for reference, that car had a 6spd and was ran hard, he broke two 6 speeds to show for it

and "daily evo" is a oxymoron, these cars break if you look at them funny and melt in the rain/snow from the inside out. they're purely collectors cars...mine has some minor rust for a northeastern car (check rear frame rails/subframe to body + upper control arm mounting points for rust)...ie lots of surface rusting on weird spots. they weren't cars built to last.

buschur stuff was nice for 2007-2009 but i ripped that turbo kit out for a stock mani + 71hta equivalent 20g (stock turbo with a 71/52mm compressor) and went from a double pumper buschur kit to a stock hanger w/ walbro 450hp and new wiring throughout.

honestly these cars are best enjoyed up to the 500whp mark...past that they can't turn and start snowballing into impractical unreliable shitboxes that'll get the doors blown off by a turbo n55/b58 bmw with boltons

Maybe my first one, I bought an E36 M3 at 16, that was stupidity. it was a 95' M3>4dr>auto and it sucked. I couldn't afford to pay the mechanic, and for some reason fell for the E36 meme, the community was fantastic and I see them quite a bit now. I could've gotten mint E30's, but really really wanted an E36. This would've been mid 00's, so think of all those cheap cars. A Subaru Baja went sub 10k, and such. WRX were new'ish w/ the EJ205 engine, and also had one of those a bit later at 20.

Insurance was the worst, I was paying $1600 every 6 months. I paid like 6k for the E36 M3. In the end it taught me everything I needed to know to fix cars.

My first car was a 1989 Toyota Celica with 190,000 miles on it. I paid $800 for when I was 16. It was totaled when a boomer hit me with his mint 1965 Ford F100. Celica was completely totaled, he had a dent in his bumper. He admitted fault and was a pretty cool guy, his insurance gave me $5000 for my shitbox Celica. I really wanted a z20 soarer but a. I'm too poor to afford to buy/swap one and b. 30+ year old Japanese cars are hard enough to find parts for even when they were made for the US market.
Instead I got a similar car; still rwd, turbo, manual, 2 doors, luxury. There really aren't a lot of cars that check all those boxes that a poor fag like me can afford. On the plus it benefits from the fox body aftermarket and theres tons of support for the 2.3.
I got extremely lucky finding this car. The original owner had it for 30 years before he died. He kept every document and reciept down to hand written notes between him and the salesman, along with a massive hoard of parts. I made a thread documenting all of this. You can search the archives for "thunderbird" around November 2021.
Its not the dream car i pictured but it does everything i wanted. They're not particularly valuable these days, but value doesn't make a car fun.

Pretty sure I had just turned 22 when I bought pic related. Though they were dirt cheap back in the day - this was $19k AUD in 2017.

To be fair I couldn't call a JZX100 a "dream car" though I had wanted one for a few years. My current dream car would probably be a DR30 RS, an Ironmask in either red/black or silver/black two tone. But a good DR30 would probably be about $50k+ now and that's well beyond my range of affordability. For now I don't have much choice but to shelve cars as a hobby for a while so I can go to university and study for a better career in the future.
