Fun fact, Garlits put the heavy engine over the rear wheels not for traction, but safety. The man lost half his foot when the transmission blew up in his slingshot style, front engine dragster.

I have the opportunity to buy a classic S10 blazer for DIRT CHEAP because it was a repo/abandoned car. I'm talking as low as $100 dirt cheap.

Only problem is "Condition unknown" because it was a repo and they have no keys so they never started it. You guys got any opinions on whether it'd be worth taking the risk with it? Exterior is in good shape, paint is faded, a small amount of rust is visible in the typical places but not enough to make me think this had been sitting for that long. Has the 4.3L V6 according to badging.

With getting new keys, proper title, etc... Probably come out to like a grand. Think I could make much off of it?
>>
>>25467842
>TFW just looked it up
>They have it listed as an '86 but the Blazer didn't get the 4.3L Diesel until '88

Naw don't think I should risk it, towing company doesn't even know what year it is.

Ran out of gas in a cool '23 Packard today. Got overzealous and took it out before cleaning the vac cannister fuel pump and she took a dump. Luckily, had enough gas on hand to manually fill it to bring her back to the shop. Very cool car.

Thanks, mate. And yeah, she's pretty. Sat for 10 years, after splitting the carb apart and cleaning everything, I dropped some gas in the primer cups, filled the cannister and she fired up on the first crank.

It's actually going to be super interesting to see what the classic car scene looks like in 50 years, since computers don't have the longevity of these old mechanical systems. I have a feeling these old shitboxes are still gonna be on the road while in-between cars all got scrapped cause a capacitor leaked on the board and toasted all the other components.

>>
>>25475834
Are you running the Duraspark II dist, coil and module?
>>
>>25475851
It's possible the original owner already upgraded to an MSD distributor. I have documentation for the engine/head build and he did a few other supporting mods, but I don't know the 2.3 well enough to tell without taking it apart. He's dead so not like I can ask.
Regardless I'll be running whatever it has but I may eventually upgrade the ignition system. I'll be at 4k spent on the turbo system/standalone before it runs again so I want to at least get that far first
>>
>>25475763
In my experience diesling was too much initial timing
>>
>>25475884
If it's MSD, you'll be able to see the red colored label on the distributor body. Ford made the Duraspark system inially in the 70s then upgraded it in the 80s. If the distributor's cap is blue or grey, it's most likely a Ford unit, which is still decent, but MSD is probably the best upgrade

Got back to the in-laws today. Turns out my less than 1 yr old battery had a bad cell or something because it was shot. Got a new one in and cutlass is back (apart from the power steering hose I still need to replace). While I was in town I stopped at a shop that had a bunch of ford galaxies out front for sale. All rusty shells, all over priced. One thing I'll never understand is the craze for a specific model (in this case it was an R code 64 galaxies) that no longer has what made the car special! Why pay big bucks for a car that came factory with a rare engine and trans set up, if they're no longer there?

And I also saw picrel braving the Houston traffic.

If this keeps up I may sell it I really don't want to, it's a cool car. I'd like to think it's sorted out now after all the work I did to it.

That’s not solvent pop. Looks like old or an incompatible converter or solvent was used, or old paint that the resins have “curdled” ( for lack of a better description) Coastie can probably tell you, from what I’ve seen him do, he can really screw up a paint job.

what I propose is to go outside and hit a peice of scrap iron with the DA, cone back and load the gun and toss just a little bit of laquer thinner and paint it in the shade instead of direct sunlight.
my reasoning is because when I sprayed it it looked like shit as soon as it was sprayed, I think the surface was too hot and the paints probably old and would probably benifit from a little bit of thinner.
any suggestions?
>>
Since we're on the topic of paint, how do you blend paint. There's a sizable dent on my quarter panel (not a classic) and I want to Bondo and paint it so it doesn't look like anything happened
>>
>>25478284
Blending is an art. Metallics and pearls are a bitch. Start with normally thinned to cover primer, then thin more and more as you cover more area. Also pull the gun away as you leave the center of the dent
>>
>>25478011
I've never had that issue. It's too uniform for it to be moisture that I can tell. Bad pain is a possibility. Could also be his spray ratio.

If you're not using any thinner, your paint's too thick. A rattle can is already pre-mixed so that's why it looks better

Sand all that crap off. Buy new paint AND the proper reducer. Don’t shoot it in the sun, don’t wipe it with a shop rag, use a blue paper towel from the paint shop, use whatever solvent prep they recommend for the paint. Drain your compressor before you paint. Wipe with a tack cloth before you paint. Paint shop will shake your paint for you and give you strainer funnels and stir sticks. That stuff is way too rough and inconsistent to try and color sand.

It might improve it, but I think you're better off redoing it. Granted you still need to clear coat it.

Have a cool C3 for your efforts anon. At least you tried.

I'm currently at some cross roads where I really don't have the heart to continue on the cutlass and want something to cruise the beach in. Maybe a K5 or an old CJ. If it's gonna be 100°, might as well go without a top.
>>
>>25478990
Lacquer should come out very smooth, do multiple thin coats. Don’t pile it on, let flash per directions between coats. I’d only color sand if you get a lot of dirt or bugs. Then buff it.
>>
>>25479010
>Lacquer should come out very smooth
it didnt, I think it was going onto the surface kindof lumpy.
>>
>>25479013
I think you had paint that the resins curdled from age or hot storage. I think if you start over and follow the directions to the letter, you will do ok. A pro painter couldn’t make what you had, come out good. You also have to reduce is with lacquer thinner. It will be very thin when reduced and that helps it lay down flat and not orange peel. It allows the gun to better break it down to a fine mist rather than slobbering and spitting clumps of paint

I just spent 2 days looking for a parasitic draw before realizing the alternator was fucked. Live and learn.
>>
>>25479366

>>
>>25479372
It was failing to charge. I tested with and only had 10V across the battery while idling. I brought it into a shop and they tested to confirm.
What tipped me off was after 2 days of fucking with wires I just recharged my battery and started it up for the fun of it. After 15 minutes idling the engine died.
It wasn't all for waste, I did find a few exposed wires which may have been the small draw I was seeing when powered down.

what's a good indication my carb needs a rebuild vs just tuning?
i'm beginning to suspect it's gone through too many cycles of sitting for months/years at a time and the carb is a little fucky wucky

on the other hand i got some corbeau A4's in here after a shitload of fiddly work to get the bolts in, and they're miles better than the stock seats in terms of comfort and holding you in place. there's also something like 1/3rd the weight of the stock seats.

the passenger side seat bracket needs mods though, not sure why they said it fits a 71 when it clearly does not

ignore the cringe red color, I'm going to reupholster them at some point, they also need a rug doctor cleaning
>>
in other news it looks like ev west is going to solve my rear suspension problem, they're making a multilink rear setup for tony hawk's C2 vette, fits the small drive unit

i'm pretty confident this will work in my c3 with some minor mods, I'll probably need to get creative with how the large drive unit mounts, but this is WAY better than ALL the other alternatives i was looking at. plus it's a non destructive install
>>
>>25482749
>reupholster

why thats literally just a shitty cheap seat from pep boys
>>

>>
>>25482749
Tuning goes with rebuilding. You set the floats, needles, etc. Dis you mean a rejet?

Rejetting is only necessary when there's pitting/corrosion from years of moisture.

A 120-year-old carb can still be running original parts if they weren't sitting in water.
>>
>>25481870
It's all relative, it's a $15-40k body shell, of course it's not the same as a 4 door Dart body, but there's still a lot of them sitting out there rotting away.

larger garage happens when i move in july, cash will happen with a big IPO payout later this month.

>>
>>25482778
corbeau a4s are surprisingly expensive, like $800 a set new, and the a4s are one of the few modern aftermarket seats that fit well and also can fold forward to access the rear compartment.
