Ah yes, I am so happy that I was too cheap to take my car to the mechanic to replace that one part. All it took me was too buy the part myself, lay in the grass for hours getting eaten up by insects and cover my body in cancer causing sludge on my day off of work. I probably installed it correctly and will definitely not have any issues with the part failing because I'm not trained whatsoever for this and have only basic tools at my disposal that I also have to pay money for.

I have a garage with an epoxy floor and I wear PPE because I'm confident in my masculinity. The mechanics for my car charge 250/hr even for "friendship rates" and they're never going to have the obsessive autistic focus that I do when doing repairs.

Every time I've taken my car in to get something done, something gets missed. I've had to replace two transmissions because of that. Now I know better, and am more confident in my own skills. There's satisfaction in knowing you did it right, and if you didn't do it right, it's a learning experience, and you don't have to fight to get the mistake fixed.

Sometimes it's just so fucking easy and costs a lot less. Brakes, radiator, and many parts on top of the engine. If it's anything under the engine I take it in, especially oil. Oil is a giant pain in the ass and I always spill something. Fuck it.

But, OP, you should change everything you can reach from the outside. Filter, spark plugs, starter, accessory belt, tensioner, O2 sensor, brakes, wipers, etc.

I once paid a mechanic to change my oil, handed him the OEM drain plug washer, OEM filter, and the oil because I was recovering from surgery and the doctor told me not to do any kind of physically strenuous work/exercise for a month. Next time I did the oil change he had double stacked the fucking drain plug washers.

I can really only trust maybe one mechanic out there. He has a strong sense of ethics and duty, one of the few I've met who will actively tell customers that they don't need a job done or how to get something fixed on the cheap.

I live in Rural USA where it's just cornfields. My barns are dirt floors. The garage I will work in if I can. I have a machine shop that's usually full with equipment. Last time I had to wrench, my 1994 F150 blew an axle in the middle of a corn field. I replaced the axle a week later in -10F weather and awful wind. I bought a CR-V for 4500$ one time and the dealership offered to buy me an oil change. ... and what exactly is hard about building a simple tin garage?

I know this is bait but the difference is time. I have time to autistically research my car specifically so I know its common quirks and problems when something breaks. I have time to budget for 3x the amount of time I think it's going to need and still have time to relax, because I don't have a service manager breathing down my neck. I have time to actually take care and meticulously check that everything is done right while actually enjoying what I'm doing instead of hating my life and the pressure of rushing to get to the next car in my backlog. Plus I can use the amount I saved in labor costs to actually buy the OEM/upgrade part I wanted instead of cutting corners with refurbished or no-name parts. And I'm lucky enough to have a beater so I don't stress out if something takes way longer than I thought it would. I help fix cars for family but I never charge them for it because it's my hobby. I'd hate to be a professional mechanic.

You have a huge typo. The minimum retail rate per hour _as-charged-to-the-customer_ for any mechanic here is $120 for the simple tasks and $160, $180, $240 for the more complicated tasks.

Do not confuse "rates" with what the mechanic is actually paid. Rate refers to what the customer is charged.

Ha, I took a car to a tire place to get a new set put on. Half way down the block the engines smoking and puking its coolant out because the dumb fucks forgot to put every single fluid cap back on.

Some mechanics....
>>
>>25032538
What the fuck are they touching the fluids for when changing tires?
Please invent a better story.
>>
>>25032544
If you read any autoshops contract, fucking any shop out there, they have a clause that allows them to do a "safety check" or fluid check or some other term like "free inspection" they use to give the car a once over and make a list of suggested repairs or services. They pop the caps to peek in and pull dip sticks.

How do you not know how mechanic shops work? Every shop from tires, oil, to autobody and full mechanic shops work this way but because you're either too young, poor, or rich to know how shops work and what happens when a radiator cap is left off, I gotta be lying? ok
>>
>>25032586
If I go in for tires, they change them in front of me in 10 minutes and I fucking leave.
>>
My grandmother bought her 2014 jeep grand cherokee v6 to a Sears shop at the mall to do an oil change. They didn't put the o ring in its grooved place and instead had it on the threads right above it. So when they out the oil filter cap back on it ripped the rubber o ring with the threads. She came home and there was oil everywhere. She drove it down the road no realizing anything and it went into limp mode. I came over and she still had it running and I checked the oil pressure and it was like 3 psi. So we turned it off immediately. Sears denied it was them. The fucking p ring was shredded on the threads instead if the Grove made for it. How do you take a o ring off in that Grove and forget to put it back correctly absolutely retarded
>>
I always try and watch mechanics. I once watched a retard attempt to put motor oil into my transfer case on my old zr2 blazer. I stopped him and he put the transmission fliud in it. They didn't even look it up and find out that it takes the blue GM transfercase fluid for automatic transfer case because it has an auto button. I had to figure that out later. I was young and didn't use the internet.

Oil changes are a loss leader for most shops, they'll make that money back by finding a "problem" and "fixing" it for you.

because the people working those oil change shops are teenagers on minimum wage with managers that only care about how many cars they can do per hour.

This is why you vet a shop and go to a good factory dealership or a competent independent mechanic, not a strip mall Jiffy Lube shitshow.

most dealers have shit-tier mechanics lol, all the good ones realize how bad they're getting fucked when the dealer charges 150/hr and pays them 35/hr and go out on their own
>>
>>25033258
lol dude if you're dutch go report that shit and fuck that company up. people died so you could have labor rights.
>>
>>25033361
Yeah, but at a dealership if they fuck up bad enough you can get them in trouble with the automaker and sooner or later you will be goodwilled a fix. The main reason you go to a dealership is also to keep the warranty intact as they might weasel out of coverage if the indie shop doesn't digitally record their service or leaves out some trivial detail like exactly what oil they used or something.

Generally, dealership at least until warranty is up, then indie shop that specializes in your type of car afterwards. Never go to a franchise chain for anything beyond a state inspection or something else that trivial.

You will literally never be able to do that unless you disassemble and wash your engine in solvent for every oil change. Half a cup of used oil left will do nothing to your engine even if you neglect oil changes for 20 years.

Good. Pay a mechanic. Most people are helpless and should pay a mechanic. As a mechanic I approve of this message. Most people aren't intelligent enough to do anything let alone wrench, hence the necessity for chad mechanics to keep the entire civilized and most of the uncivilized world running.

This sounds like it was written by some Dealership owner.

>Too cheap to take my car to the mechanic
Saving money isn't being "too cheap". You don't need expert hands to change a lot of simpler car parts.

>Buy the part myself
At a rate less than what the dealership charges

>Lay in the grass for hours
Nobody does this. Either do it in your garage or, if you don't have one, the parking lot of your apartment.

>Cancer-causing sludge
Top fucking lel wear gloves retard

>Probably installed it correctly
You have to learn a bit to do it right. This applies to every discipline of repair - door knobs, faucets, your shitty computer you wrote this OP with.

Genuinely speaking, fixing cars now might be easier than ever. You have access to so much information from YouTube, PDF maintenance manuals, the entire internet. Strictly speaking fixing OLDER cars now - newer ones come with their own electrical weirdness.

Fixing your car is also a good life-skill. It teaches you to realize a problem, diagnose it, do proper research, and fix it. Saving money is honestly a side reward.

Some of us get fulfillment by working with our hands: woodworking, fixing appliances, welding, gardening, etc. Fixing cars is just one other enjoyment - especially if it works out, and saving money is a nice bonus.

Faggot.

Also mechanics can fucking kill you. They're not guaranteed to work. Story time:

>Be Volvo 850 owner
>Need brakes done
>Dad is good friends with dealership guy, gets discounts and wants me to have it done there
>Okay
>Take it there, get it done, all in a day
>No reported problems otherwise

>Take Volvo out, doesn't feel weird, gonna drive on the highway to get back to apartment
>Girlfriend texts me before I head out wanting to see me super fast
>Okay
>Drive to gf's house instead, hang out for an hour, start to leave in my car

>Absolutely 0 brake pressure
>Fluid has pissed absolutely all over their driveway
>Nigga what
>Call up dad
>Call up dealership retards
>Tow car back to dealership

Turns out, the mechanic doing this had managed to either pinch or twist the absolute holy hell out of my brake lines. And these absolute turbo Jews tried to give me a shit discount to pay them AGAIN to do a brake line replacement. I 100% could have been on the interstate and lost brake power if I hadn't visited girl.

Needless to say: I do not use them anymore, and convinced my father that they're a pack of window-licking morons.

I don't know, but it's cheaper than me fucking this car up and it not being drive-able anymore, I'll gladly replace anything I can get to real easy like the battery and filters, any sort of work, or fluid changing, just take it down the street or to the dealer depending on what I'm doing, $116 for a dealer transmission drain and fill that I do every year to keep everything happy really isn't much to ask.

>>
>>25048667
>nothing is built to last anymore
Maybe they'd be built to last if there weren't soiboys leasing 36 months at a time because they don't want to pay $39.95 for an oil change every 3000 miles and fix what's needed as part of being a car owner instead of just larping.
>>
>>25048996
it's late stage capitalism. no globohomo wall street automaker makes anything worth saving anymore. to be honest I don't even keep leases the full term. I'm tired of the new car when it doesn't feel new anymore. usually around 18 months into the lease. and i don't lease for 36 months, i lease for 24 or 27 months. my current lease I can get out of now 11 months EARLY and they're going to pay me $3,000 cash.

I don’t give a fuck about PPE but otherwise this. Mechanics fuck up 10x more shit than you are if you have even the most basic patience and care.

Fuck paying someone $140 an hour to slap something together without care when I can do it with the only cost being my spare time and be able to take my time and make sure it is correct.

Literally I have had so many mechanics either try to screw me over by either telling me something is wrong that obviously isn’t. (Your brakes are bad - yea sure okay I didn’t just replace all 4 rotors and pads 2 weeks okay) Worse than that is they “fix” something and make the problem worse. Hell I’ve even had a mechanic do the wrong work after discussing it in detail with service advisor and then after it was done he claimed did the work I told him to. In that case I wanted rusty brake lines replaced, he replaced an entirely different line that we both saw zero rust or issue with.
